Medlar Mystery #2

A Justified Murder

Rate this book
New York Times bestselling romance author Jude Deveraux continues her breakout Medlar Mystery series with a twisted tale of guilt and revenge...

The small town of Lachlan, Florida, was rocked last year when two bodies were uncovered in the roots of a fallen tree. Despite their lack of investigative experience, Sara Medlar; her niece, Kate; and Jack Wyatt found themselves at the center of the mystery, working together to reveal the truth behind a decades-old secret in the sleepy town. After a narrow escape, they vowed to never again involve themselves in something so dangerous--until Janet Beeson is murdered.

When Janet's body is discovered, everyone is shocked by the violence of the attack. The sweet little old woman has been shot, stabbed and poisoned, but no one can imagine who would want to harm one of the town's kindest, most helpful residents. Sara, Kate and Jack are determined to leave this case to the professionals. But they are soon bombarded by townspeople eager to tell their stories and clear their names with the trio who solved the Morris murders. Even the sheriff is hoping they'll lend their skills to a crime that seems to have no explanation and no motive. And once the town gets talking, they begin to see that there are more secrets buried in quiet Lachlan than anyone could have imagined...

Jude Gilliam was born September 20, 1947 in Fairdale, Kentucky. She has a large extended family and is the elder sister of four brothers. She attended Murray State University and received a degree in Art. In 1967, Jude married and took her husband's surname of White, but four years later they divorced. For years, she worked as 5th-grade teacher.

She began writing in 1976, and published her first book, The Enchanted Land (1977) under the name Jude Deveraux. Following the publication of her first novel, she resigned her teaching position. Now, she is the author of 31 New York Times bestsellers.

Jude won readers' hearts with the epic Velvet series, which revolves around the lives of the Montgomery family's irresistible men. Jude's early books are set largely in 15th- and 16th-century England; in them her fierce, impassioned protagonists find themselves in the midst of blood feuds and wars. Her heroines are equally scrappy -- medieval Scarlett O'Haras who often have a low regard for the men who eventually win them over. They're fighters, certainly, but they're also beauties who are preoccupied with survival and family preservation.

Jude has also stepped outside her milieu, with mixed results. Her James River trilogy (River Lady, Lost Lady, and Counterfeit Lady) is set mostly in post-Revolution America; the popular, softer-edged Twin of Fire/Twin of Ice moves to 19th-century Colorado and introduces another hunky-man clan, the Taggerts.

Deveraux manages to evoke a strong and convincing atmosphere for each of her books, but her dialogue and characters are as familiar as a modern-day soap opera's. "Historicals seem to be all I'm capable of," Jude once said in an interview, referring to a now out-of-print attempt at contemporary fiction, 1982's Casa Grande. "I don't want to write family sagas or occult books, and I have no intention of again trying to ruin the contemporary market." Still, Jude did later attempt modern-day romances, such as the lighthearted High Tide (her first murder caper), the contemporary female friendship story The Summerhouse, and the time-traveling Knight in Shining Armor. In fact, with 2002's The Mulberry Tree, Deveraux seems to be getting more comfortable setting stories in the present, which is a good thing, since the fans she won with her historical books are eager to follow her into the future.

Jude married Claude White, who she later divorced in 1993. Around the same time she met Mohammed Montassir with whom she had a son, Sam Alexander Montassir, in 1997. On Oct. 6th, 2005, Sam died at the age of eight in a motorcycle accident.

Jude has lived in several countries and all over the United States. She currently lives in Charlotte, North Carolina and has an additional home in the medieval city of Badolato, Italy.

This murder/mystery was excellent. You really had to keep on your toes because there is a lot going on. But it is worth it. What a shocker at the end. Nope. I never saw that coming. I do think, however, that the first book in this series is important to read to understand and fully enjoy why these three amateur sleuths make this work. Their histories, their diverse backgrounds, why they are together, how they developed into their little family gives you a deeper appreciation of how far they have come and why they work so well together. Their interactions are priceless, as is how they arrive at their conclusions. And, Kate! When are you going to open your eyes about Jack! Great series! I cannot wait for the next one to see what "The Three" will get into next.

I really wanted to LOVE this book. Jude Deveraux was one of my go to authors if I couldn't find a good book. This book was OK. I enjoyed book one in this series and was excited to see where book two took the characters. I started the book several times and was easily distracted by other books that I wanted to read. The quirky relationships of the main characters Sara & Kate Medlar as well as Jack Wyatt were interesting in book one. I think why this book fell flat to me was the characters of Jack, Sara, and Kate did not 'grow' in this novel. There is a murder. They do run around trying to solve it. The book just fell flat.

Disappointed. There was something really off on this book, it was written erratically. Easily the worst of Deveraux's books. Finished it because I was a long time fan who has read all of her other books so I was hoping it would it better. But it was painful to read.

Sara Medlar is an author, with her niece Kate and a man like a son, Jack, they end up getting involved in murders. This trio always seems to stumble upon bodies and start figuring out what happened. Even when they say they won't get involved they do.
This time Janet Beeson is murdered. This sweet little old woman was stabbed, shot and poisoned. Everyone said how kind she was and helpful to everyone.
But at all hours of the night their door is being pounded on. Please clear my name, she was so helpful, and on and on these folks confide in the trio. Even the sheriff has asked for their help. But as they continue to look into Janet, they find out she isn't who they thought she was and all kinds of secrets come about.
I am enjoying this series and the banter between the trio. Jack really likes Kate and tries to make all kinds of innuendos but she keeps thwarting his ideas. Even though you think she really likes him. She sees him as a ladies man.

This was one of the worst mystery books I've read. The ending was abrupt and left all of the important questions unanswered.

As with the first book in this series, I was completely captured by the story from the first chapter. I enjoy seeing the way that the characters are developing and love getting insights into their characters. The plot moved swiftly with so many suspects that I never guessed who was behind it. Frankly, I'm still not sure who was the culprit. Ms. Deveraux also left one secondary storyline unresolved and I hope to see how that turns out in the next book.

I like the characters in this series, but the story/mystery was odd in this one.
And I hated the ending.

Agghhhh! I read, rated, and reviewed this earlier this year and mistakenly deleted while changing it from read to to read today. Now I don't remember what I wrote previously. I recalled that I like that it was set in South Florida, but I did not like it as much as the previous one. The trio of Sara, Kate, and Jack resurrected their sleuthing skills despite promising to each and others that they would not.
A sweet but really an unlikable woman is murdered. Someone is digging around to uncover a mystery decades old. Everyone is hiding secrets. There is a twist at the end.

This was a rather confusing read, if I’m being honest. I haven’t read the first in this series, but this is one of those series that you can jump in at any point. And it wasn’t so much the plot, or the characters, or any of that that was confusing for me.

No, it was more that I couldn’t tell what this book was. A times, it felt like it was trying to be a parody of sorts for a murder mystery. But then, at other times, it felt like it was taking itself very seriously. I didn’t understand which it was.

The plot was fine. A bit dragged out and boring at parts in my opinion but other than that it was just okay. Same with the characters- they didn’t wow me, but I didn’t dislike them. I was just indifferent. Although I did enjoy some of their banter...but other times it didn’t feel authentic.

A part I did want to mention that made me feel a bit icky was when they brought in two sixteen year old boys to help with the investigation and the women were like, admiring them and things. I get that they were probably just joking around to rile up Jack, our other protagonist, but it still kind of left a bad taste in my mouth. Also, speaking of Jack, his family must have godly genes because every single women/girl finds him and these two boys attractive which was honestly a bit annoying.

I think perhaps this book was simply not for me.

Another fun mystery from a Queen of Romance!

I really enjoyed this one. In some ways, much better than the first. I think that was because the main characters were already established and she could have fun with the secondary characters and the plot.

The plot was entertaining but - to me - the best bits were the humor. So many things (mainly people) were just so funny. Lachlan is a very weird place to visit (not sure I'd want to live there).

For years I have wanted to read a book by Jude but I almost never read contemporary romances. Jude and I were in college together at Murray State, graduating in the same year. Then last year she wrote her first mystery and I was so excited. I got a copy right away and really enjoyed reading it. I was very excited to hear that it is a series and there will be more coming out. I mean after all, there has to be more developments between Jack and Kate.

This book drew me in from the horrific beginning right through the "Oh no" that was the last page ending. I really wasn't expecting that. But it was fitting. There were a lot of characters in the story and I did have a bit of a problem keeping them all straight. But I am sure that some of them will be in future books and we will become familiar with them. Maybe that's just me. One of the best things about her books is that they are very clean novels, ones I can recommend to all my friends. Yes, there is plenty of flirtation but she does show that good novels can be written without all the vulgar words and sex scenes that so many think are required to make a novel salable.

I especially like the introduction of Jack's twin cousins. I do hope they will make it into future books. They were really fun and I would like to see them help again in solving the crime. I really look forward to reading the next book in the series.

The second novel in the Medlar Mystery series A Justified Murder, the first was A Willing Murder, Jude Deveraux has picked up about 6 months after the first novel. Jack’s leg is healed, he aunt Sara, and Kate are all living in Sarah’s house, and things are going pretty well. That is until the sweet old lady who helped them solve the last murder ends up dead, with the potential of multiple killers.

This novel has the same feel as the first, which is very made-for-TV-movie feel, and that is really what makes this enjoyable. Fast paced and terribly quick witted, this novel kept me moving throughout it.

Kate, Jack, and Sara are just a delight to read. The other characters in the story have some level of depth, but because of these three you don’t really need those other characters.

I do with that Kate and Jack would just end up together already. When I heard that the second novel was out already (the first was only just released back in October) I can honestly say that I grabbed to see what would happen with the two of them.

This isn’t the best written novel or most compelling. This is a fun novel that is a good fun weekend read or a little escape from reality. Am I planning on reading the next book in the series and possibly all the books in the series? Yes. Yes I am.

If you enjoy humorous books and fast-paced mysteries, this is a really good read for you. If you enjoy sweet and silly romances, this is also probably for you. If you want characters with a lot of depth, a story that makes you think, and writing where even the secondary characters are clearly well developed… okay, maybe look at reading something else. The writing is decent, and the dialogue is fast.

A Justified Murder by Jude Deveraux was an excellent murder mystery novel that took some wild twists and turns I didn't expect!

Sara, Kate and Jack work together to try to solve an old woman's murder. Everyone seems to like her... or do they? There's more than meets the eye when this elderly woman is brutally murdered, and the plot begins to thicken when her drama is released into the public...

I honestly adored this book! It was sweet, simple and yet so thrilling all at the same time. It felt very cozy yet it wasn't a total contemporary, cozy mystery. It was packed full of unique stories that I hadn't expected (but I also hadn't read the first book in this series, so who knows... maybe I would have seen them coming!).

This book can easily be read as a standalone, but I know I want to pick up the remaining books in this series now. It was super enjoyable and enough information was given for me to understand what was going on in the story.

I will say this: If you are looking for a murder mystery book where you will be able to connect the dots, this book is not it. It's a bit more scattered brained and the kind of book you just sink into and let it ride itself out. There was no way you could guess what was going to happen until the information was given by the author. There's no dots to connect.

I am very curious if this romantic relationship that was being hinted at develops... I guess I gotta find the rest of the series to find out!

Four out of five stars.

I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

Jude Deveraux’s A Justified Murder (Medlar Mystery #2) is set in Lachlan, Florida, a smallish town with some dark secrets and a few characters who have moved there to escape their darkish issues. The main characters, Sara, Jack, and Kate insist that they will not be dragged into the solving of a new extremely vicious murder of an older woman, Janet Beeson, a Lachlan resident who is known for helping people whenever she can. I had difficulty getting into this mystery because the author kept having the three protagonists stating that they will not get involved in this murder because of all the difficulties and the townspeople reactions to their involvement in a previous murder. I felt the author had the characters ‘protest too much’. I believe that I was 150 pages into this book before it truly became interesting! I liked the main characters, and there are some intriguing twists (mostly towards the ending), but I definitely felt ‘please cut to the chase’ quite a few times. Also, at times , there are too many new characters in a particular segment, and it is troublesome knowing who is whom. 3.75 stars.

First of all, I have not read any previous Medlar books. Secondly, I used to be a real Deveraux fan until the sickening series about that small town where everyone is related. So I've probably missed quite a few. THis one: WAYWAYWAY too many characters. Everyone's daughter and her spouse and their kids, all the previous friends ditto, and don't forget all the dead characters. I was SO close to a DNF. But I persevered, and got through it. It was heavy on authors and their quirks as well as holding on to grudges for decades or more. The conversations between Jack and the young realtor with the domineering mother were too silly to repeat. It was obvious there was attraction there, but she was just so cute and coy it was disgusting. Along with a lot of other stuff. The way the sheriff kept popping up everywhere was bizarre, but it never stopped. Also, for way too many pages all 3 of them denied any interest in the murder, which was just ridiculous. After all that, maybe I should have made it a two star rating.

Sara, Kate, and Jack are back in a new mystery. When Janet Beeson is stabbed, shot, and poisoned, everyone in town looks to the trio that solved the last big murder. But they aren't interested in helping. That's not what they do. But somehow, they are dragged into the story of a woman who was seemingly the most liked person in town. So who would want to kill her that bad?
This was a completely scattered book with parts of the story stuck in here and there and things said about characters that weren't backed up in the story... and yet Deveraux manages to charm. Sentence structure is odd and unnecessary asides are plentiful but I think people who enjoyed the first book will like this one as well.

It was an interesting book set in Lachlan, FL and is the second of the series. The main 3 characters, Sara Medlar, Kate (her niece) and Jack Wyatt are back again and more of the towns people are introduced. This book was not as satisfying as the first. The secrets, murders and relationships are there, but the plot feels stretched and at times not quite believable. There’s is also the issue of some events happening decades earlier and still not being resolved. The ending gives one a “feel good” moment for one of the characters, but it end with an issue that one feels will come back further down the road. I like this author, but felt slightly disappointed in this book.

Sarah (writer), Kate (real estate agent) and Jack (house contractor) have refused to get involved in another murder case. But when you live in a small town what you want to do may not be your choice. People, afraid of being accused, start showing up in the middle of the night asking the trio to clear their name. Soon their curiosity and fate has them in the thick of past secrets. This is a perfect light (contemporary) mystery/romance read. I listened to this one on audio and enjoyed the narrator.

The Medlar Mystery continues! I loved hearing about some of the "old" characters from "A Willing Murder" and getting to know new characters. The massive web of secrets and lies is astounding. I often found that I had to put the book down to process what was happening. I can't wait to read the other novels in this series!

I wanted to love this book, I really did.

It’s like when you make refrigerator soup... you take anything and everything that’s in there and throw it into the pot and keep your fingers crossed that it’ll taste good.

So many ingredients in this novel yet it fell incredibly flat for me. No flavour, zip or spice.

The mystery in this book is still a mystery to me. There were so many characters that I really had a tough time following everyone. A beloved woman and her friend were both murdered but it turns out that the description of these characters wasn't really who they were. The trio of Sara, Jack and Kate did their best to figure things out and didn't succeed any better than I did.

Lachlan, Florida is a small town that had been relatively quiet for years. But, recently, the new trio of Sara, her niece Kate, and long-term houseguest, Jack Wyatt, recently solved a murder that went undiscovered for years. Things got quite dangerous and scary, and they certainly hoped that was a one-time thing.

However, a woman named Janet Beeson has been murdered, and it was a rather brutal one. Janet had a reputation of being a very kind woman, so the town is definitely confused by such a crime. At first they are determined to leave matters to the police, but the trio cannot help but become involved. Surprisingly, the sheriff even wants their help.

What ensues is long-buried secrets that are gradually revealed. I love how the three of them interact. I was hoping by this second story, that Kate and Jack would see that they are meant for one another. This busy story is delightful. There is mystery, suspense, humor, a bit of romance and even jealousy is evident. I think this lends to the excitement for further books in this series.

Many thanks to MIRA and to Edelweiss for this ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion.
