⭐️⭐️ 2 / 5 – The Enchantress (Book 2) by Erin R. Flynn
I did enjoy this one slightly more than the first book; there were a few laughs and one genuine emotional moment that made me go 'aww' - but overall, the story still felt very disjointed. The pacing was messy; it constantly jumped from one crisis straight into another without a real breather. It felt like being tossed from one frying pan right into the fire, and not in a good way.
The book also needed more thorough editing. There were several spelling errors and missing words, which pulled me out of the story. I actually found it ironic that the author pokes fun at another writer for making similar mistakes - even mixing up a character name (Linc/Link) - and then does the same thing herself.
As for the characters:
Soraya still hasn’t grown on me. I don’t find her likeable or compelling, and I can’t see that changing as the series goes on (though I suppose anything’s possible). Her connection with Linc didn’t feel that strong either. I get her loneliness by the end - “forever alone” vibes - but honestly, they hooked up a couple of times… whoopie doo. Not exactly a great romance arc.
She insisted on keeping things casual and made that perfectly clear to everyone - then turned around and got upset when it stayed casual. It’s hard to sympathize when she can’t even stick to her own boundaries...
Theo - why is he even here? He adds nothing to the plot. He’s got a kid he should be focusing on, but instead he’s just… filler.
Detective Hunt - honestly, can we just get rid of him and his toxic energy? He’s written as such a jerk that it’s hard to believe the author wants us to like him. It feels like there’s some heavy projecting going on in this series - like every male character has to be awful. The man-hating tone throughout the book is thick, and it’s hard to ignore.
And speaking of that - the ancient vampires. There’s just not enough depth or information about them to make me care. All we really know is that they’re all jerks too. . Victor and Andrew are both trash, and not in the fun kind of way.
I’ve really liked Flynn’s writing in other series, but this one? It’s been frustrating. The world has potential, but the characters and tone are making it hard to stick with.
