This is a very naughty story! Some no doubt would go further and call it a good deal worse. Set in the present day, it depicts a fantasy world inspired by Jane Austen (abject apologies to that dear lady). Instead of vanishing into the romantic mists of literary history, here Miss Austen’s England has endured in all its unfettered glory into modern times with some decidedly unintended consequences. Among these is the existence of a ruling class of men whom centuries of power and wealth have accustomed to indulging their appetites and having their own way without restraint.
TEMPTING GEMMA is purely--impurely might be more correct--a work of escapist entertainment. It is intended as a secret, even guilty pleasure to be indulged in privately, perhaps with a nice glass of wine or the beverage of your choice. Although M/F, monogamous and HEA, it in no way depicts events that I would ever wish to occur in the world as we know it.
If you are not mortally offended within the first few pages, I hope that you will find this story both arousing and amusing. On the other hand, if you do take offense, I humbly apologize although I feel compelled to point out that you have been duly warned. Kindly proceed at your own discretion.
Josie Litton is the author of several NY Times and USA Today bestselling romances.
Married and living in Connecticut, she is the parent of two grown children. Becoming an empty nester has left her plenty of time to write, think about writing, plan what to write next, and read. When she isn’t doing that, she’s cooking, gardening, and traveling.
Gemma, having attended The Mary Magdalene School for Young Females, has been trained to be the perfect wife for Charles Ardsley. However, their wedding day certainly sets the tone for what life with Charles and his family will amount to. Perhaps.
This is a short erotic story that showcases Gemma and Charles’ marriage and most importantly, their marriage bed…or wherever else Charles deems to take her. It is full of BDSM antics including public displays and humiliation. While I am not a fan of BDSM, I found myself enjoying it in His Lordship’s Downfall and was curious enough to begin this series as well.
Written much in the style of Anais Nin (I stumbled along one of her books years ago and was aghast at what I read but to this day can’t forget it!) this story highlights the ordinariness of bondage and discipline in this place and time. J.L. does an excellent job of making the reader accept this is all very acceptable behavior even while feeling some repulsion at Gemma’s treatment. The fact that she appears to be accepting of it brushes the uncomfortableness of it away. However, I do wonder if Gemma will remain docile or will one day take a stand. While this does not end in a traditional cliffhanger, Gemma’s story is far from over and will continue in book 2.

The inspiration from Jane Austen, to write this story seems very little... I could not detect a slither of Austenesque about this book at all.
The heroin, Gemma is humiliated but seems too stupid to understand it. The antihero, the Lord bears no resemblance to any male Austen character I have ever read. We are promised his downfall in a later instalment but my curiosity does not stretch that far.
This is an intimate that mixes the steamy with the funny but ends up feeling clammy and awkward instead. The funny bits are in an embarrassing way and I personally do not like that.
Gemna has been a pupil at the Mary Magdalene all girl school when she is "sold" to the Lord by her father. At the wedding, the Lord takes the wedding night at the celebration with the cheer and on lookers of hundreds of guests... His family, who lives at the manor with them, are even worse. Using Gemma as their maid.
I love, love, love, love this twisted universe created by Josie Litton. I'm so happy that she's continuing to write in it, and I hope for more sordid tales. Note that like the other books in this world (His Lordship's Downfall, etc.), this novelette features graphic sexual content. While there are dark themes and frustrating gender roles in Litton's futuristic Britain, I genuinely adored the relationship between Gemma and her husband. Sure, it's dark and twisty, but it's very clear that he loves her, which makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.
Can't wait for more!
Another note: this is very short. I'm fortunate that I get to read ARC versions of Litton's work (because I'm a ravenous fan), but it might be worth waiting for bundled sets or a complete edition if you don't like reading cliffhanger-y type works.
This is the first part of an ongoing serial about Gemma and Charles. Up until the time she is married, Gemma has been living in a Convent and didn’t take kindly to punishment. Charles introduces Gemma to the carnal pleasures of a versatile married life. While Gemma always obeys Charles, she never once questions him, even if certain actions leave her perplexed. Meanwhile, Charles’ family are less than friendly towards Gemma, forever requesting Charles to discipline her more.
It had always been Gemma’s dream to go University; she wanted to study Law, then have a career as a Women’s Rights Attorney. Instead she has been sold into marriage to settle her father’s debt to an old aristocratic family. Her husband, Charles, the Marquess of Ardsley, is young, handsome and virile; from the moment they were wed, Charles came up with new and creative ways to tease and torment Gemma. Gemma had been educated at Mary Magdalene convent school, and knew not to question Charles’ actions; even so, she has a sense of her own potential that simply will not leave her. The truth is that she married Charles to escape the suffocating terror of being isolated, alone and terrifyingly vulnerable, but now she had to wonder if she made the right decision. Charles’ mother, sister and brother also live at the family estate, but have never once made her feel welcome; instead they taunt and humiliate her at every turn and nothing Gemma does ever pleases them. It is when Gemma is weary from Charles’ rigorous attentions and discouraged by the family’s hostility, that she oversteps herself. Charles’ family believes he is too soft on Gemma and she should be disciplined. Charles has already found so many shocking ways to torment Gemma, and she anticipates in vivid detail what form of chastisement her husband might now choose as she waits in mingled repentance and trepidation. As an innocent school girl, Gemma had dreaded punishment, but is puzzled that when Charles punishes her it isn’t nearly as bad as she anticipates. With the honeymoon over, Gemma soon discovers that her duties as Charles wife are many and varied, but she also has to make a genuine effort to meet his family’s expectations. Gemma thought she was already doing that, but Charles is unconvinced; now he wants her to do a challenging task to show him she is really sincere. Gemma dreads what Charles is about to say, but cannot deny her excitement; he calls to some part of her she never knew existed, yet is now helpless to deny. Tears of embarrassment and frustration seep down Gemma’s cheeks; humiliated beyond words, Gemma continues her task and does as Charles asks, as he murmurs affectionately to her. How Gemma’s live has changed from just a few months ago; it was simply too much to grasp, yet couldn’t be denied. Now Gemma wonders what new and inventive torments lay ahead. A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments here are my honest opinion.
Feminists beware, you may find this storyline a little infuriating. I don't consider myself a feminist and I also enjoy reading BDSM stories. However, I got infuriated with Charles and his family (and their belief on what a wife should be) a handful of times. That being said, I enjoyed this beginning to Gemma and Charles' relationship (it does end in a cliffhanger with several installments to soon follow). I like when an author can make me feel, even if it is frustration. Personally, I see it as a sign of a great author.
Gemma was sent to the Mary Magdalene School for Young Females at the age of 16. There she was groomed to be the perfect wife for her future husband. Her training taught her that the perfect wife tended to the every need of their husband, were submissive, and endured humiliation of all kinds without any complaint. After her time at Mary Magdalene, Gemma was turned over to Charles to pay off a family debt. On her wedding day, Gemma was given a glimpse into what her future would entail. Her in-laws treated her like dirt, as if she wasn't good enough, and also didn't think Charles was strong enough on her with his discipline. They were horrible to her. According to the end of the story, this is just the beginning of Gemma's pain and humiliation. I am looking forward to seeing what happens next. I would love to see if Gemma can break free from the in-laws and their awful treatment of her, maybe even get put in their place. One can only hope. *I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. This is my honest review.*
I honestly have no words to describe what I felt reading this book. It was interesting to read that in this day and age, that Gemma's and Charles' lifestyle still existed. It was kinky with BDSM thrown in. Charles treatment of Gemma included public humiliation, shame and he expected complete subservience never to consider what she wanted or needed. Gemma grew up thinking one day to have her own career. However, her family sent her to a special school whose main object was to stifle any creativity and self confidence. She was taught the only reason to exist is to please her husband. She was sold to The Most Honorable Charles George David Bonville, Marquess of Ardsley in lieu of her father's debt. She was barely eighteen when she graduated from MM convent and directly married Charles. Charles enjoyed public displays of his sexual congress with Gemma. He also dreamed up new and creative ways to tease and torment her. How she put up with this I do not know. But I agree with another reviewer that stated that it was possible that Gemma would not always put up with this type of life. But we will never know until we read the next installment. I look forward to read the continuing saga of poor Gemma and hope, hope, hope for a better future for her and that she finds her independence from the situation she now finds herself in. I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I received an advanced copy of this book and all I can say is that I'm still nursing the blisters on my fingers from the heat pouring off the Kindle.
Josie Litton is the queen of writing naughty and VERY dirty stories and writing them very well. If you are looking for pure lust mixed with a little pain and a lot of pleasure, this fantasy version of Jane Austen's England set in the modern-day world will fit the bill. This is definitely an adult book and will have your Kindle steaming up from start to finish. And no, in this story, you won't hear me say the characters were well developed - well, er, yes they are, but not in the way I usually mean in the review, lol. And neither will you hear me tell you that the plot contains twists and turns, er...it does, but not in the same way I usually mean.
If you like to be entertained with a dirty story or two and if you like baudy, naughty stories, this one is it. Josie, I swear, one of these days, my Kindle is going to melt while I'm reading one of your stories.
Poor, poor Gemma! When she's forced into marrying The Most Honorable Charles George David Bonville, Marquess of Ardsley, her life takes on a twisted turn of carnal, erotic delights and punishments she was never in her wildest dreams (nightmares) expecting.
The fantastical world of a present day England that "has endured in all its unfettered glory into modern times with some decidedly unintended consequences. Among these is the existence of a ruling class of men whom centuries of power and wealth have accustomed to indulging their appetites and having their own way without restraint." Josie Litton has created here is one that any reasonable woman of this modern age will be really frustrated with, will probably hate, as I do; but as in His Lordship's Downfall, I suspect Gemma and perhaps female kind in general, will prevail in the end.
This novella is the start of a series that is in the same world as Tales of the Odalisque and His Lordship’s Downfall. It has that unique feeling of a modern day time but somewhat also of a regency time as well. Of course this book is a total erotic romance one. So there’s a lot of sex.
Unlike other stories, this one starts out with Gemma and Charles already married. A somewhat happy marriage as well given the circumstances in which Gemma was given to Charles. The lifestyle they are involved in is definitely different and a bit intriguing. As much as I somewhat cringe over how Charles’ family treats Gemma, I was constantly curious as to why they were the way they are.
I’m also curious to see how the marriage works out and if Gemma starts to finally chase her aspirations and stop holding back. I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
Jane Austen revised into modern day and age - or some stuff like that according to the pages before the story actually begins. I must say that I read all four straight after the other as I simply cannot stand such short stories that are continuing on and on after only six short chapters or so each. So to read them continuously is the most tolerable. But my oh my, thiese stories were almost not tolerable at all. Such degrading female writings, well lets say this I will really hardly ever read a book by this author again. Four in a day even though they were all really short is more than enough for my lifetime. Sorry for being so brutally honest. Of course this is only my opinion and others really likely have totally opposite opinions.
Josie Litton pulls out all the stops in this remarkably imaginative tale of a young woman who marries Charles George Bonville, Marquess of Ardsley, a British lord “possessed of inexhaustible virility” and ravages poor Gemma wherever and whenever he pleases, regardless who is present.
I love the author’s warnings: It’s a fun, flirty fantasy of sex, love and happily ever after. So expect to exercise those brows because you will undoubtedly be lifting them in surprise and hilarity over the debauchery to be had. You’ll love Gemma’s first adventure in the historical feel of a naughty, filthy Austen novel.
I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I seriously love Litton's blurbs! I was cracking up right from the start. This series is set in the same time frame as His Lordship's Downfall. So it's not nice, it's not sweet, it's not romantic. It's raw, dirty, hot, and very much on display for everyone to watch and see. This first book of her newest series is a tease, it's going to get you hot and bothered and wanting more. I loved every bit of it that there was! I just wish there was a bit more to this first book!
Well! Not what I was expecting having received a free copy in return for an honest review. I started this book and thought 'WHAT ON EARTH' - not my usual cup of tea, not that I don't read erotica, but after the second page I couldn't put it down. Goodness knows what that says about me but when I got to the end I was wishing I didn't have to wait for the next book to be published to continue the story. This book is not for the feminist, faint of heart types but for everyone else it's a ripper.
I love the premise surrounding this book, and the Jane Austen-esque type of writing. I love the whole fictional world that's been created for this. I haven't read many other books like it.
Now, this bok is totally debauched, and incredibly dirty, and not for everyone. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down, and am excited to read more!!! Definitely take time to read the Appendices provided, they're a real gem!!!
Please note that I did receive an ARC of this book, and the opinions expressed in this review are my own.
The perfect intro to a deliciously dirty and carnal erotic serial This is the first installment of a steamy sexy serial read In a time when women were possessions, a sweet young lass named Gemma was sent off to private school to be trained as the perfect wife Submissive Subservient Sexy Alas upon her completion she was married off to the ever-randy Charles - or should I say ever ready? Poor little Smart Sassy Gemma This is an adult read filled with steamy scenes filled with carnal pleasure Might I suggest reading this one in private 😘
A furturistic Jane Austen England type world of dominat alpha males, a school called the Mary Magdalene that trains young girls that their only objective in life is to please a man and obey, but the real reason is because her sorry father has sold her to the Marquess of Ardley to pay off his debts. Now she is married at eighteen to a man who treats her like a piece of property and of course there is his nasty family as well to deal with, I cannot wait for them to get theirs. It is still a good book and well written, enjoy, I did! My voluntary and honest review of an ARC!
This world that Josie Litton has created is one of my absolute favorites. It is a modern world, but it has a feel of the Regency Era. The writing has a classic feel to it that makes the dark erotica feel more taboo. It is scintillating and scandalous, and it is beautiful and romantic in its darkness. I love losing myself in everything this author writes, and this serial is no different. I can't wait to find out what happens to Gemma as she tries to navigate her marriage to Charles and his extended family.
Josie Litton certainly has a way with words! While this story is a bit disturbing and jarring, much like His Lordship’s Downfall, I was hooked! It’s written in a way that feels very proper and gentile while telling a story that is very much the opposite. The only thing I dislike is that this is in a serial format where you get just a small bit of the whole story at a time. There’s just something about the story that leaves me desperate to find out what happens in the next 5O pages. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
A very hot naughty read. This author has certainly jumped to a new level of erotic writing! The world is at once different and yet not unfamiliar! It is a place where the powerful few do as they please while the rest must bear the burden! This is a very short primer for the new series! The story is very descriptive with strong language and intense BDSM! In the same token the story has a lot going for it and the series should be spectacular!
Oh my this book was very interesting in deed. It showed us what family can be like and it for without saying very naughty to say the least. Gemma and Charles definitely give couples a fun for their money. I can't wait to see what book 2 brings us. If you're not one for explicit scenes this one has some but a wonderful read. I give it 4.5 stars. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book as an Advanced Reader's .
I read this book as part of an arc program. This is the first part of this story and features a young woman named Gemma who is recently married and is taught to obey her husband. This also means she has to obey his family also. Gemma is often disciplined by her husband's family. This book is set in modern times, but has a Victorian feel to it. This is a very steamy read and will continue in more books.
A short read, that leaves you wanting more, more, more, please. Married to settle a family debt, the teachings and training at her convent school ideally prepared her for a life of servitude to her husband. Well written, with a generous dose of humour, Gemma begins a diabolical and deviant training leading to Gemma's sexual awakening and journey.
The fantasy world created by Josie is fun and wicked. Glad I have more episodes loaded onto my Kindle.
After reading all three books to date, I can tell you I'm addicted! Josie has really out did herself with this story. I could not put it down. I had to read on to see just what else Charles had in his wild imagination. Gemma is such a strong woman who wants nothing else than to please her husband, which seems quite difficult with her nasty relatives. I'm counting down the days until the next book is released....until then write on Josie Litton,

Gemma was sent to Mary Maydolene School for Young Females to be trained to be the perfect submissive wife. She was given to Charles Ardsley to cover a family debt. Gemma embarks on a life where her husband loves to use her in every way possible. He loves to punish her with sexual toys and other implements. Unfortunately she has to endure the constant insults and complaints from his family and they loved to tell him how to punish him. This book is dark, erotic, graphic ,hot read.
This short story is amusing as it is intriguing. Poor Gemma goes through some intense things to please her husband and his family. The story makes the reader feels for her as she goes through some for her trials and the intense scenes are enough to make the reader want more. I received a free copy of Tempting Gemma for an honest voluntary review.
Hot! Gemma is forced to marry Charles and must obey him and his family. This is the first in series and is fast-paced with plenty of drama and off the charts heat. This may be a modern read but do to circumstances has a Victorian feel. I was hooked from beginning to end and am looking forward to more. Loved it!
Another steamy slide into the twisted and fun world of Josie Litton. Gemma has been forced into marriage by her family to satisfy a debt. Her new husband is into BDSM and loves to punish her in delicious ways. It's a steamy beginning for a new series. Not for the faint of heart.
I was provided an ARC of this book and this is my honest review...... Naughty Josie! Let’s see if Gemma learned her lessons well at the Mary Magdalene School for Young Females! This is a crazy, sexy, fast paced really naughty romp through the beginning of Charles and Gemma’s unconventional marriage. Fun read!
The introduction of this book says it's "set in a version of the modern world very loosely inspired by Jane Austen" so I wasn't really expecting the male lead to rape the heroine in front of the groomsmen at their wedding on the first page but that's what happens. I stopped reading at that point and deleted it from Kindle so I'm not sure how it ends.
