This book deeply shaped my understanding of how humor and pain can coexist.
Torberg captures Jewish life in Vienna between the wars with warmth, irony and emotional precision. The stories are often funny — but behind the wit, one senses the vulnerability of a world that would soon disappear.
An unforgettable and profoundly human book.
