This is a fun little book for anyone interested in learning more about different types of boats and about good boat-watching spots in the Bay Area. It covers merchant shipping, tug and towboats, workboats, passenger boats, fishing boats, and historical vessels. Not much on recreational boats. If you don't care much about boats, but want some background for understanding news (such as the role of bar pilots or aspects of different types of cargo ships), this is also a useful read. This book was published in 1979, so the information about specific historical boats and their locations is in some cases out-of-date. Its small size makes it an easy book to stick on your backpack for a coastal hike or take along on a lazy afternoon in Port Costa.
