While I have read and watched some other advice on various marine knots, this is the first holistic guide I have practiced with. A big strength of this guide is the number of knots included, its waterproof cover, and a thin detachable rope for practicing many of the described knots.

Note that only the cover is waterproof, not the pages within, so while this would be great to have on board a boat, it's intended to be used for leisure practice time while anchored or at port. This is not to meant to guide you through certain knots in the moment you need to be making those knots; you will still need to memorize and gain the muscle memory for the key knots you will be using for your particular watersport interests. While it is good to have this 40-knot guide on hand to learn extra knots for fun, you will only need to use 2-5 knots regularly for a particular sport, whether that be sailing, motor boating, paddling, kayaking, or canoeing.

As such, this is a fun gift for marine enthusiasts and young enthusiasts (like those in sailing camp or the scouts) alike. I only give this 4 out of 5 stars, however, because the descriptions and illustrations guiding readers through each knot should have been made more clear. The illustrations often do not have clear arrows for where to put the working end of the rope next, and some steps or the final step of the knot is often missed. I found myself more often than not analyzing the final knot image rather than the intermediate descriptive step images to figure out where I needed to configure the knot next to lead to that final result. This should have been beta tested prior to publication, and the illustrations should have prioritized functionality over aesthetics.
