immensely enjoyable

Overall 5 out of 5 stars
Performance 4 out of 5 stars
Story 5 out of 5 stars

So much to consume. So much to take in and still you listen for the more. There was a rich world of thrills, secrets, lies, tech, murder, mystery, and twist with turns all along the way. Each installment gave you more of a reason to keep moving forward. To take that next hour or two to listen to what was in store for Kirsten, Kate, Keke, the Doomsday Prophecy, The civil war, the future. There as much for you to find and get lost in. This would most certainly be categorize with multiple genres. It had mystery, danger, intrigue all in a dystopic, thriller, with a psychological edge. If this is up you alley, I highly suggest you carve out time to enjoy this futuristic world of real life and the reality of things and then the virtual reality of the mind. J.T. Lawrence set the bar high for her science fiction, dystopic, psychological thriller. Get you copy and get started soon.

The narrator Roshina Ratnam gave me full body listen that was rich and fully clear voice, clarity in sound, separation of characters. This was no blend them all together and figure out later which character was saying what. This was just what you needed to take that adventure or journey to another time and place for the week. It was just that much more to enjoy when you were able to experience three stories in one audio.

My first read/listen from author JT Lawrence. I'd gotten this book back in October a year ago & just got around to reading it & since I own both the Kindle & Audible editions I was able to follow along while being read to. Well-written with captivating, well-developed main characters, the story captivated me from the opening of the book.
My second read/listen from author JT Lawrence, How We Found You, the second book in the When Tomorrow Calls series. Again well-written, suspense ridden, with captivating, well-developed main characters that were introduced in the first book, Why You Were Taken, the story continues, picking up four years down the road from the end of the first book.
What Have We Done, my fourth read from author JT Lawrence, in the When Tomorrow Calls series, the concluding episode. Well-written, suspense, with captivating, well-developed main characters. I’ll be reading more by this author; in fact I just discovered a short read in this setting, The Stepford Florist, which I’ll read next! (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018)

Why You Were Taken review

I’m thoroughly enjoying this series! The prequel gave us a taste of what was possible from these characters and setting. Kirsten and Keke make a great team. They are both dedicated journalists and each has a history of being in dangerous situations. Set in a near future South Africa, showers & swimming pools are practically unheard of, the fertility rate has plummeted, and paper communications (like printed receipts, etc.) are practically unheard of. Yet tech has continued to progress. I loved this aspect of the book! Keke has a tattoo that changes colors with her insulin levels, letting her know when she needs a shot. Some people have implants tied to a small tablet (called a tile) for all their communication stuff and more.

There are several flashbacks sprinkled through out the story. It did take me a while to realize that they were flashbacks. I know I should have picked up on that sooner, I just thought this flashback character had some fascination with the 1990s. Anyway, the flashback storyline turns out to be very important for our main characters and over all, I liked it. All told, 4.5/5 stars.

How We Found You review

This was a pretty good sequel though if you picked it up without Book 1, you could read it as a standalone.

Kate (aka Kirsten) is raising her two kids (Silver & Mally) with her brother Seth and their very good friend Keke. She knows that Mally is special and she has her guesses as to why but she’s not sure what to do with it. Pretty soon, it becomes apparent that someone is after one or both of her kids and she has to unravel the mystery she walked away from 4 years ago in order to save them.

Sometimes I loved Kate and sometimes she was tedious. Even though I understand why she’s stressed out and sometimes loses her temper and wits, I still wanted to give her a small slap to bring her back to reality. Freaking out isn’t going to keep anyone safe and it did create a few lags in the story. I still find Kate’s synethesia fascinating and so many of the side characters are great, including the new guy Zach.

Keke is my true fascination. I want to be her side kick! So I was a little sad to see how limited her role was in this book. The plot is wrapped around a prophecy that has the kids caught up in it. I really enjoyed how this unfolded. 4.5/5 stars.

What Have We Done review

Wow! What a mind trip! This tale opens several years after the ending of Book 2 but there’s plenty of things in this story that refer to earlier books in the series so it wouldn’t make a stand alone book. Mally and Silver are both nearly 16 and they have grown up in a very different world than their mother Kate (who is a self-imposed technosaur). For the first half of the book, we’re really just getting to know the tech of the day and catching up with the characters we’ve fallen in love with along the way.

Keke is still my favorite character. She’s got a bigger role in this novel than she had in Book 2 (yay!). Marko, her friend with benefits/non-exclusive significant other, has run off to an ashram in India and Keke is a little heartsick over it, not knowing if he will ever return. Meanwhile, Seth (Kate’s twin brother) has stuck around to help raise the kids and he still has this torch burning for Keke. By the end of this book, I think he might be a great fit for her even if she’s still pining for Marko. Kate herself is trying to be a good mom but two rebellious kids in a world filled with tech that Kate doesn’t fully understand makes things difficult. Zack has been doing hard time at SkyRest for all those pesky murders in Book 2.

OK, so robots are everywhere and doing everything for humans in this near future South Africa. Some robots are strictly service bots with no AI and then there’s a whole range of AI in the more complex bots. Some bots have rights and some don’t. Like sexually harassing a lingerie bot is illegal but is only referred to as interference and doesn’t carry the same weight as such an act against a human. There’s those that are fighting for equal rights for the bots and there’s those that don’t want any rights for the bots.

Then a few bots loose their crap and people die. Runawayrunawayrunaway! The ending gives us a big mindscrew. Yep. Oh my! I loved it because it means our heroes have to take a big leap. 4.5/5 stars.

Narration review

Roshina Ratnam is phenomenal with this series. I’m loving her narration and really appreciate the skill she brings to the table. This tale is set in a near future South Africa and there’s several African accents. I’m completely untutored in African languages but Ratnam was made it possible for me to hear the differences in the various accents (for example, Zulu and Nigerian). She also did a great job with Kate’s wildly swinging emotions (as needed), Seth’s fear & determination, Keke’s deep concern, and Marko’s intense fear. She had perfect little kid voices for Mally and Silver. 5/5 stars.

The 27 and a half hour run time for the Audible version seemed like a long time to dedicate to one story - and there's no doubt, once you get into it that this IS just one story - so I decided I'd break it up into the three parts and take a break between segments. I did, but once I finished the first story, I found myself anxious to get back to the second book, just to find out what was going to happen next.
Lawrence has woven a complex and fascinating near future South Africa that most of the time seems almost familiar ... and then you'll start a new chapter, and suddenly, it's nothing you've even imagined. Every time you think you've got it all figured out, the tale throws another curve at you and you get pulled along with the characters, plunging down that next slope into a whole new mess to figure out and, when you finally get to the end of the third book, you'll find one of those rare "I sure didn't see that coming" endings that's will leave your head spinning.
I loved all the characters in this series:Keke and Kate, Seth, the twins and all the rest. They're strong and determined and just "off" enough to remind you that this isn't your 2018 world they're living in.
Don't let the long run time bother you. Those hours will fly by with this one, and when you finish, you'll wish there was more.

Overall, the story in the first two books of the trilogy was relatively enjoyable. It takes place in the near future with a high tech society that has some economic and social challenges. The story itself has a bit of a mystery/thriller feel to it and moves along quickly, keeping you turning pages. For me, it was made less enjoyable by the gratuitous use of profanity (by the third book, I felt like I could count some form of F*** on every page at least 3 times), and unnecessary sex scenes, although there were admittedly not so many of those. Still, it didn't contribute anything to the story or the characters and was personally a turn-off. Additionally, the character development that began in the first book had fizzled by the end. The characters seemed to change so drastically with no real cause from beginning to end, that I didn't feel they were written very authentically. And the most frustrating moment for me was the end of the trilogy. Quite frankly, some of the things the author attempted to try to tie together didn't make a lot of sense. In an attempt to not spoil anything, I will just say the grand finale was vaguely reminiscent of that terrible plot device where the characters wake up and realize the whole thing was just a dream. To be clear, that wasn't actually what happened in this book, but I'm trying not to spoil it if you still plan to read. It just reminded me of that, and I feel the way the book ended was lazy.

With all of that said, if you don't mind quite a bit of profanity and can suspend your disbelief long enough to jump over the plot holes later in the series, the books are mostly enjoyable. It wasn't enough to make me feel this is an author I'll continue to read, but it was interesting enough to keep my attention to the end.

Book 1: Why you were taken
3.5 stars

I purchased the box set, so this was a re-read (turned out I didn't remember enough to skip it). Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Review from the first time I read it:
"It's been a while since I've delved into a "futuristic" novel. This was refreshing in that it's mostly set in Johannesburg, South Africa. Although I knew little to nothing about the plot before starting, I had picked up from a review somewhere what Synesthesia was, so perhaps was a little less confused than I otherwise would have been. The story mostly revolves around two characters, Seth and Kirstin, and is set in 2021 although there are flashbacks to the mid 80s too as what unfolds turns out to have its roots there. It's a mostly a mystery, I guess, and I enjoyed the read. This was my first JT Lawrence novel and I'd happily read another. "

Book 2: How we found you
3 stars
The number of violent interactions this family finds itself in really is unbelievable. No wonder Kate is so traumatised: I'd have nightmares too. She also seems to have some kind of superhuman pain threshold.

Enjoyed the futuristic world and gadgets. Story was a little extreme. And I think I preferred Keke in the first book. She was just more bad-ass. I'm busy reading the box set so I'll be moving straight onto the last book of the series to find out what calamity is next on the agenda.

Book 3: What have we done
3 stars
This ending! No!

At least we did learn why this family seems to attract violence, drama and weird cult obsessions.

The ending though... Sheesh... Almost makes me want to rate it even lower. But the rest of the book/series doesn't deserve that.

No judgements please, but if I tell you I've read all of these books, I've also listened to them all separately, now I've listened to them as one big box set, you'll be forced to draw one of two conclusions. Either I have the memory span of a goldfish, or, these books really are something very, very special. I assure you it's the latter. This story simply takes my breath away. I can't explain, because I don't possess the genius of JT Lawrence with words, but it's like it's real life in the future. All the gadgets, the way of the world, everything, it's so clever and credible. I love Kirsten, Keke, Seth, Silver, Mali, even Betty-Barbara. They're like my family. The whole story is so creative, so mind-bogglingly brilliant. Then, just when you think you've got a handle on how this future works - BAM! and your brain is fried when everything you thought you knew and understood is turned upside down and inside out. Alongside the exquisite writing, the pace of the story is phenomenal, you definitely need to sit down when you listen or you'll be exhausted. By book 3, you'll be lying down, mopping your brow and gulping water. When you've finished the entire set, you'll be convinced someone slipped you something in your drink. IT WILL MESS WITH YOUR HEAD - BIG TIME!! I was all overcome and totally and completely "WTF!!! No way!". I pray that JT Lawrence stays on the side of the angels, because if she decided to go dark, we'd all better watch out. If the When Tomorrow Calls box set was a lager, it would probably be the best lager in the world. Awesome, mind-blowing, enthralling, captivating, fabulous and fantastic. Buy the books today, you can thank me later!!!!

Book 1:
The concept is very interesting. This is a fast-pace thrill ride that has you on the edge of your seat until the very last page. A bunch of kids are kidnapped at an early age, then come to find out, there's a lot more to the story, and they all grew up with lies for parents, and now, they must flee for their lives. This story takes place is a very interesting future.
I enjoyed the story, but didn't care for the book's harsh negativity on religion.

Book 2:
Another thrilling adventure. Children start dying, which is a horrifying thought, then you begin to discover how they're all connected, and then you realize you know one who is connected, and they must stop it before it's too late. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat.
I don't particularly care for how this book portrays religion, making it pretty much non-existent in the future except for the extremists who are not actual Christians because they fail the most important thing of loving one another.

Book 3:
Full of action. Dark. Mysterious. Violent. And tons of curse words like the last two books. I did enjoy the book, though I felt it was a bit much at times with the cursing. This one had my head spinning a lot more than the last two. There were so many flashbacks that I had a hard time keeping up with it all. I did find the concept at the end to be quite interesting, and it was something I didn't see coming.

[My review is for the audiobook format.]

It was the description of this trilogy that initially piqued my interest, and after listening to all three books I'm so glad I took a chance on them. I had not read from this author before and didn't know what to expect, but the quality of writing and storytelling are truly quite good!

Kate and Keke live in a future where virtual reality tech is as ubiquitous as smartphones are now. The VR platform serves as a tool to educate and entertain, but being easily misused it is also addictive and dangerous. The reader follows Kate and Keke through a significant passage of time between the three novels. Twists and surprises abound throughout, keeping me glued to my earphones and dreading ever coming to the end of this story. Roshina Ratnam is a truly fantastic narrator here. Her lovely accent is a great fit for the characters, and I easily listened to her for hours on end! If you enjoy darker themed dystopian societies full of LitRPG-worthy tech and gear, and if you love complex female leads who juggle their good nature against the ferocity that their circumstances require, then may I recommend giving this trilogy the same rewarding chance I did.

As a boxset of three normal length books, the first impression of this audiobook is that it is good value, but realistically that is only true if you actually enjoy all three books and luckily that was the case with the first one being a decent enough read eventually and them steadily improving from there through the series.

It was slightly unfortunate for me that the pacing of the first book was further hampered by the jumping around rather than the author focusing on the stronger main storyline, but I persevered with book one and eventually got into it more, neither the second or third books seemed to suffer in the same way and I went through those two much quicker.

The choice of narrator was a good one with her tone and accent nicely enhancing the story and characters in a manner that a more neutral choice would not have done.

Overall, this is a very enjoyable set of books, but if like me you find the first part a little slow, take a break and listen to something else before returning for the stronger 2nd and 3rd parts that really make the set shine.

This is a tough review to write, because I don't want to give away what happens. The three books cover distinctly different sets of events, each one is gripping.

I was really impressed with the world building, it was vivid, believable and felt like somewhere I could take a walk. The characters are complex, lifelike and likeable, I couldn't help but feel for them and want everything to work out. The creativity of these books make them some of the best books I've read this year (almost 400 so far, so that's significant).

The end of the third book stole the show, I did not see it coming, and it left me rethinking everything that came before it, simply brilliant.

The narration was excellent, the character voices are believable and the emotions of the stories came through strongly.

I received a free copy of this book from the author and/or narrator and/or publisher and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.

I cannot imagine a situation where buying these books as a box set was not simply a brilliant idea. I read them as they came out and now plan to read them all again, one after the other. Lawrence creates such a tight story with wonderfully interwoven personalities and events that having each book lined up, ready and waiting for when you finish the previous one, sounds like bliss.
Be warned though, you may have to read until way too late at night because putting these books down before they are finished is a monumental feat.
My individual reviews for each component can be found on their respective pages. Suffice to say this is a sexy cyberpunk dystopic series with well rounded characters and amazingly creative inventions for the future. Its a cracker of a series.

I received this audiobook free for an honest review. I thought this book was very confusing. It moved around with characters that I'm sure came together at some point. Maybe I wasn't ready for this book at this time. I found it difficult to keep track of what was going on. At some other point in time, maybe I would be better able to focus on this story. I felt like I had to listen to it several times just to get the characters in order in my head. Maybe at some time in the future I will be better able to concentrate on the story and have a different opinion. If, at that time, I have a different opinion, I will change my review.

This series is very interesting, and I love the way they all intertwine with each other, very action packed and thrilling. Like some others, it started off a bit slow for me, but that's to be expected in most cases while the story is set. Very much enjoyed the story and the narration, great character development, very thrilling, really makes you think. Not predictable, keeps you wanting more. I'd definitely recommend this series! :)

Absolutely brilliant !!!
It took me a little to get into the South African accent but once I did it was almost impossible to put the book down.

JTLawrence writing style is unbelievable, you can totally get into the characters, feel what they feel and understand everything that goes around them.
Truly a masterpiece !!!

No disappointment Guaranteed on this one.

My review is based on the audiobook. Such a fascinating series! Grabs you from the start with extremely descriptive world building so you can see the action as it unfolds in front of you. I became completely invested in the characters and found myself listening whenever possible - this was a case of hurry up I want to know what is going to happen but slow down and cherish each moment at the same time. The narrator was greta bringing the story and characters to life. I look forward to more from this author.

Something really different! Futuristic, set in South Africa, and totally unique - while each book is amazing, reading them in series, as you can in this set, gives you CyberPunk heaven. You won't see the ending coming (or I didn't), and the suspense and writing are gripping. Even if this is not your usual genre, take a chance and enjoy!

Oh man, I read each book in this series as they came out and loved it so so much because it was so different from what I normally read, but not only that it kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next. I especially loved all the action that was taking place within the story, there was never a dull moment. That is why for me this is a series that I know I can re-read over and over again!

I bought this trilogy to read book 3 so I got to reread book 1 and 2.

As a trilogy this is a fantastic read.

It's captivating and the way JT describes the world is not all that far fetched as some similar books paint. This is a world I can easily see in the future and because it's believable in my mind, it made it more enjoyable.

Quick reading, action packed and highly enjoyable.

I had previously read and/or audible listened to the first 2 books, so listening to this set on Audible from beginning to end was helpful to refresh my memory. The 3rd story took some VERY unexpected twists and turns, I can't believe where it ended up! I guess I need to keep my eye out for another addition, where do we go from here!?

Bewildered in first chapters but once in, a great story. Nothing resolves as you would think, you see patterns but not enough to give away. Ending I see why but my mind might rewrite lol

I’ve previously listened to The Stepford Florist - a book written within this world. There is a prequel (The Sigma Surrogate) and I’d like to listen to it. I enjoy this world the author has created.

Book 1: Although the first book is set in 2022 it’s not implausible. Kirsten, along with a close friend Keke, try to navigate the vague clues given to her by a stranger. Clues to figuring out why her name is on a list and with the except of one other person, they’ve all died, and why her murdered parents were not her parents after all. Eventually meeting the other person on the list brings up as many questions as answers. There is danger, intrigue, and questionable loyalties.

Book 2: set about four years after book one. Kirsten has a son and daughter. The questionable, advanced medical practices that resulted in her son, now make him a target. More people start offering Kirsten help but she does not know who to trust. Keke and one other person is all she can count on. With her daughter taken and her son as a bargaining chip, she must figure out who is behind this and why, and she’s unsure if she can save both kids.

Book 3: is set twelve years after book two. Technology has only become a more integral part of daily life and her daughter is fully immersed. Her daughter shows typical teenage rebellion, but then she becomes in over her head and her life is in danger. Kristen has to figure out how to save her. Some of the issues they’ve face in the past resurface, and now the truth must be determined to help them all.

There is a cohesive thread that connects all three books, yet I also got a feeling of an abrupt change of direction. Kinda like going uphill on a roller coaster, then when you think you know where things are heading, you reach the top and drop. I can’t explain it completely, but the transition to the new direction was not as smooth as I think it could have been. There’s a few loose ends left up there with my stomach. Regardless, I thoroughly enjoyed these stories and I love the conclusion.

These are the first books I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Roshina Ratnam ) and I would definitely listen to another. She did a fantastic job voicing each character. I was immersed in the story. She brought out each character’s personality and did well narrating the action and emotional parts.

There are no explicit sex scenes, or excessive violence , there is some swearing.

I'm finding it difficult to write a review for this unique trilogy. I initially read each book singlely and each book offers up different themes, yet each story follows the same players, and the same doomsday prophecy, but there are years between each story. In each book, Kate and Keke have grown, matured, changed, but their friendship has remained constant. I could tell you that "When Tomorrow Calls" is a near future, dystopian, cyberpunk thriller, that it takes place in Johannesburg, and that it's part of a new wave of great SF coming from Africa... I suppose could post my individual reviews of each book here (but, I won't)... What I will say is that it's one of the best trilogy's that I've read in some time...
The trilogy is really Kirsten's (aka Kate) story. She is a kickass protagonist, and she even has a secret power, well it seems like a power... she has synesthesia, and she'll use that and anything else that she can, to keep her family and friends safe! She has the instincts of a mother bear, along with an oddly colorful "power"!
... I then double dipped and had a second serving of this awesome trilogy. I couldn't help myself and grabbed and listened to the audio version of the set when it was released. And, I've got to say Roshina Ratnam does an amazing job. She makes JT Lawrence's words come alive, plus I just love her South African accent...
Sure, you can get these stories individually, but why would you do that when you can get this great deal? That'll save you the trouble and bother of looking for and buying each book individually... because I know you'll want to read them all !!!
Then make sure (if you haven't already) to pick up the prequels... As both The Sigma Surrogate and The Stepford Florist adds even more character to this already vivid imaging of Johannesburg...
