Let me start this review with a caveat: I’ve read other books from this author, so I’m pretty sure my thoughts and reactions are fully mine and have nothing to do with the book in itself.
I wanted to DNF many times and I forced myself to keep reading. My only and main problem was the heroine and the (lack of) angst. She has a back story that doesn’t pan out the way I expected (therefore my initial claim). It makes her weak and fragile, a martyr, rather than the fury with a chip on her shoulder I expected. She has a martyr personality that was difficult to swallow. Everything is her fault, when it’s really other people’s.
Do not misunderstand me, I don’t blame a person for her past or her reactions. I simply expect something different. I expected betrayal to cut deep (and it did) but also to have some consequences. I expected anger and rage and got self hatred and doubts. She forgives so easily that’s unacceptable (leave apart what’s right or wrong, when it deals with you you are never that fair...)
So I basically couldn’t accept this woman as an heroine and her behaviour as acceptable.
DNF. I really tried to finish this. Really. Did not want to add another DNF, but got to chapter 20 and the main character, Cyn, was just too hard to take. Between all the twitching, shaking hands, shaking knees, bitter taste in her mouth, and her stomach constantly roiling in every single chapter, it just got to be too much. She was a feeble and unlikeable character. She was a train wreck and a huge liability to everyone. Having to listen to her constant whiny inter-dialogue of doubt and second guessing only to pushing it all aside annoying and pointless. Always on the edge of tears or breaking down but tucking all her emotions away, over and over and over became redundant babble to me, making it a most tedious read and frankly kept putting me to sleep. I know that's supposed to be angst, but at the level the character was experiencing it all, someone should have Xanaxed her ass with a double dose and parked her in front of a corner with a view of the beach. She did not belong in the military or in any investigation. She was so ineffective at everything and yet her mental blustering had me thinking she would finally prove herself, big NO there. She got her ass handed to her again and again. So at chapter 20, when the paranoia and roiling started once again, I finally tapped out. I see most (or all 25) of the reviewers really enjoyed the book and the author's style so my opinion is in the minority, (the only one actually). Good for them, but I lost the battle. White flag up and out.
When I began to read Hunted by the Past, Ms. Gray's writing abilities had me in awe and quite breathless. Her expertise to show, instead of tell, emotional angst, vulnerability, and compassion had me mesmerized from the first paragraph. She writes with such brilliant tactics that I believe there is a Military Unit filled with special psychic Marines. Hunted by the Past is fast-paced, quick witted, and Ms. Gray can surely spin a fascinating paranormal story. An extra bonus for the reader is the sizzling, sexual tension between the main characters, Cyn and Kayden that keeps you flipping or swiping the pages.
I recommend Hunted by the Past to men and women alike.
I received an ARC (Advanced Reading Copy) by the author, Jami Gray for an honest review.
A page-turner of a paranormal thriller, I found this almost impossible to put down! The plot hooked me from the first chapter and the main characters felt so real I couldn't help the tension I felt over everything they were going through, particularly Cyn. I wasn't sure at first if the romance was going to be a slow burner but things had really steamed up by the end. Recommended to fans of thrilling reads and paranormal romances!
I love this & I can't wait for more. I will be also leaving a review on Goodreads @ Amazon. And letting everyone know about it. So i gave it a 5 Stars.
No matter how much we want it, we cannot change the past. We can revisit the good and bad in our minds, but imagine actually reliving the past psychically? Ex-Marine, Cyn Arden has seen and lived through hell, a mission gone wrong and the loss of fellow Marines and her military career. When the monster behind her downfall has escaped custody, he has one goal in mind, to finish off Cyn and the rest of her former teammates. Re-entering into her life is Kayden, the man who chose his job over her. Must she now embrace the ability she has in order to survive, and if she does, will Kayden stand by her or walk away once again? Will she find peace only through death or will she finally have the backing of others like her?
Hunted by the Past by Jami Gray is “in your face” action, drama and tension, starting from one panicked phone call and continuing on to the very end. Jami Gray has created characters that are scared, yet strong, a little mysterious at times, damaged and not always likable, but one thing for sure, they feel flesh and bone real. Want to cringe over the bad guy’s actions? You will find the villain despicable. Each scene stands up like a 3D cut out and never once does the feeling of urgency in the chase falter. Great reading, great action, high emotions!
I received this copy as part of the Hunted By The Past Tour & Giveaway at Tome Tender.
Series: Psy IV Teams - Book 1 Publication Date: August 26, 2014 Publisher: MuseItUp Publishing Genre: Adult Paranormal Romantic Intrigue Print Length: 343 pages Available from: Amazon | Barnes & Noble
This is my first book by Jami andI loved it. The mystery and suspense aspects read really well and I loved Kayden. There was a sad moment in the beginning but it helped in the plot. Will be reading more by this author.
Hunted by the Past is the first book in the Psy-IV series (pronounced cypher), and from the first page you are introduced to a world of the military and psychics, which is not the usual combination! Cyn was injured in a mission gone wrong, but when it comes up for trial, the rest of her team leaves her hanging. This obviously upsets her, and she leaves, trying to put as much physical and emotional distance between her and them as she can. That works for so long, but then things take a turn for the worse, and she is thrust back into their lives, whether she wants to be or not. So now they are trying to catch a sociopathic killer before he kills again, as well as Cyn trying to figure out just who she can trust again.
This is brilliantly written, with no editing or grammatical errors to disrupt the reading flow. It is absolutely action-packed, from the very beginning right the way through to the end. This story is wrapped up nicely, whilst still leaving the door open for plenty of other stories too. The characters are in-depth and well-rounded, with tension (both normal and sexual) between our two main characters from the word go. It was nice to see that although they had a prior relationship, they still took things slowly this time around. And you could actually see when Cyn's walls started to crack. Excellent writing. With a whole slew of talents, abilities, and names, there is plenty here to get your teeth into. I've thoroughly enjoyed this one, and I'm looking forward to the next. Definitely recommended by me.

Merissa Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books! Apr 19, 2017
Having enjoyed Ms Gray's Kyn Kronicles I was curious to see what new worlds she would take me to. Would I find characters the equal of Raine and Gavin? I was not disappointed. Once again we have a face the world head on no matter what heroine, and a hero more than worthy of her. We have a complex cast of characters with enough individuality to have us looking forward to their stories (write faster!) And we have villains who are really bad, for really good (in their minds) reason. Even better, the good guys aren't all gold plated good. For a while we have to wonder how much Cyn can trust Kayden with her life, and her heart. Will Psy-IV back them up or will they be left twisting in the wind? I grabbed my copy of Hunted By the Past when Muse It Up had it on a special pre sale price, with the promise I not release any spoilers in my review. There are so many little details I can't tell you about. But I can reveal Ms Gray brought her own life experiences into play when she created Cyn. Being in the foster care system is rough enough, even moreso for a child who is special in ways no one understands, including herself. So many of Cyn's later actions are based on her earlier experiences. The child is the father of the man, and this author has grown characters rich in personal history who are willing to risk everything for love of each other and their duty.
Hunted by the Past ROCKS. From the very first word, the reader gets thrust into the action when a frantic phone message tells Cyn - ex-Marine Cynthia Arden - that something really terrible has happened to her sister. Cyn has the ability to experience the past, so to help her sister, she relives the traumatic event. The intensity of those opening events carries through the entire book, making it a page burner - and I meant 'burner' because you cannot turn the pages fast enough to see what happens next.
Cyn is a likeable character - tough enough to fight her way out of almost any situation, but still realistically feminine. That's a hard combination to pull off in a believable way, but Ms. Gray does it. She also does an impressive job with all the military lingo. The scenes where Cyn and Kayden rediscover each other are sweet without being saccharine, and while the bad guy(s) are pretty awful, there are reasonable motivations for their actions. I enjoyed the heck out of this book, and would recommend it to anyone who likes driving, hard-edged, romantic suspense.
Loved everything about this book. What a ride of emotion, suspense, action and love....The characters flowed well together and the story itself was written so well to make you feel that you were in it. Some points I really wanted to knock Cyn on the the head about her stubborn habits but then I understood the crap that was thrown at her, gave her every right to be that way. Kayden, what can I say....just everything a woman dreams of...total swoon worthy!!! I didn't feel this book was rushed at all. I think everything flowed nicely and ended just right. I look forward to reading more by this author.
Have you ever read a book that was so good you want to read it again then you decide to keep it for another read. Well this book is that kind of book. The main character is Cyn, an ex marine with psychic abilities and a psychic killer is after her. Tons of action, great characters, fast paced and one heck of a story line make this book a great read.
Won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. Extremely well written, you can feel the emotions, fears as you read along. You become immersed in the story. One of the best stories I have read in a while. A psychic team within the military brings real adventure and leaves you with wanting more of this style.
This is an edge-of-your-seat thriller. The action is non-stop, and the storyline is well thought out, and the romance between Cyn and Kayden brews slowly. This story captures you and it’s hard to put down.
Granted, it took me a while to finish this book as I was reading physical copies of others and doing book reviews, etc. so I had to come back a couple of times and reread things. The idea was great: a military unit with psychics and other supernatural-type abilities – sounds intriguing, right?
In the beginning there is quite the dramatic episode and you get to witness what Cyn can do. An interesting ability indeed. And you hear of her backstory and what happened to her leg and how she just wants to stay away from it all. But then the past comes back and people she never wanted to speak to again are once more in her life as a madman is after them and taking them down one by one. It seems the villain is in her head and she is struggling to differentiate reality from the past.
So the action is pretty up-tempo and the fights are pretty believable (especially the physical damage afterward) but then the intimacy after the physical damage sounds, well… anyway…
Besides the dreadful punctuation and grammar mistakes, was Cyn’s constant anguish. Her being on the verge of tears and curling into a ball on someone’s lap to be held with his head on her head and his arms around her just became repetitive. I never felt a synergy between the team, and in fact, never felt close to any of the characters. They came and went and even the villain was one-dimensional.
The ending was over in a flash and it was, unfortunately, just not a book I would have sat down and been so engrossed in I could read from start to finish. I was hoping for more, considering the plot, but it was not the spectacular psychic thriller I expected.
When I first decided to read this book, the first two negative reviews really demotivated me a lot. The descriptions of the first chapter being a little complicated, I was close to giving up even trying to read further.
I'm so so thankful I read further and further... And further. It was such a beautiful journey. Such a beautiful book. I loved the adventure and danger of the book, and I immensely treasured the bond of the sisters the most. I loved the bond Kayden and Cyn shared as well, it was so beautiful..the dialogues, the tensions, the revelations... Just beautiful. Many complained about Cyn being anxious and fidgety every once in a while but that's the beauty of it. How she overcomes that and brings changes in her mentality, and life.. isn't it the beauty? I think so at least.
I'm definitely recommending this book to everyone who is up for some adrenaline rushing action packed adventure with a side romance building up after past incidents... I'm going for book 2 now. I'm sure I'll love it as much. 💕
For a book that starts off with a bang and the promise of an exciting adventure, it does not take long for the story to fizzle out. The reader never becomes invested in the characters because they are so one dimensional. Questions about the past are never properly addressed and somehow the heroine bears the entire burden of past mistakes. There are too many holes in the plot that the author tries to tie up at the end with a few paragraphs. Perhaps those gaping holes will be addressed in the following books but, as an introduction to the series, backstory should have been covered properly. The book could definitely use a good editor. There are so many amateurish mistakes throughout the story that it constantly throws the reader off the narrative. Even a mediocre attempt at editing should have picked them up prior to publishing.
I read through the reviews before I decided to read the book and so had conflicting thoughts when i started. What i loved..... the premise the build of the world the hero and her hea characters the pace of the story
What I didnt like - first person story - i thought it would give more depth to see Kayden's pov the switch of the baddie halfway through - got very confused the final confrontation - pages were spent on reliving previous memories, but the finale was oer in two pages...
However, this story is still interesting for me to continue the series, so hoping the first is jsut the start and the story develops with more additions to the series
4.5 stars. Hunted by the Past is an action packed story centred around spies with psychic and paranormal abilities. Written like this, it sounds incredibly far-fetched, yet Gray had me believing the possibility. The main character, Cyn (Cynthia), was a curious mix of strength and vulnerability. She does show incredible signs of weakness, at times, but has the strength to surmount these. I liked that in her character. I would have given 5 stars, but for the fact there were some editing errors — not a lot but they were usually in moments of high tension and they brought me out of that tension so I am not willing to forgive them.
Liked this book, though I was a little aggravated with Cyn from time to time. I did feel that her initial issues with her former teammates morphed unrealistically, but I got why it had to go that direction. My one disappointment was that during the last two-thirds of the book it seemed like the proofreader went to sleep. There were quite a few typos and a couple of confusing sentences. It was surprising, considering how well the book was written otherwise. Will definitely be reading the next one though.
I could not continue due to a pet peeve. Why do MC’s immediately forgive when they are done wrong and jump tongue first done the throat. At least wait more than a second after being separated so long. It’s insulting. I’m sure that later there is going to be a “good” reason why they abandoned and lied to her that makes her look like she was the problem. Oh and by the way, answer all of the men’s personal questions, while they give you little to nothing. Typical.
Love, loss, betrayal, murder, violence, romance, treason and oh yeah psychic powers. This story is multi faceted and quick pace. It is a military esq romantic thriller, but the addition of psychic powers adds a different spin to the story and the hurdles everyone encounters. The story is well developed and quite vivid with emotions and description. Captivating and a great start to an intriguing series. I plan on reading more of this series.
I would have gone higher on my rating...much higher actually, but the copy I have is so full of editing mistakes that it is basically one, large dumpster fire that actually made me work to follow what was going on.
I too, had a few problems with Cyn, but I think she came around in the end. The story itself is awesome. I think I would have really enjoyed it if I hadn't had flashbacks to grading freshman essays.
I mostly enjoyed this book but I don't love it when things develop way too fast go be believable. I was also somewhat distracted several times by lazy editing, missing words in phrases, verb tense changes, etc. I had to keep going back and rereading sentences & paragraphs that didn't make sense be cause of it. Not a bad read at all, just not what I'd hoped w.
This starts off slow as we follow the girl boarding off the plane, getting in her car, and hitting the freeway through the Sedona desert. One can certainly appreciate the vivid description, but no need to describe every trivial thing, especially if it’s not that interesting. The storyline certainly doesn’t grip you at all. The writing is decent, yes, but the read is, otherwise, really boring.
I'm a fan of the author, but this book is significantly more angst-y than her norm and the 'misunderstanding' that generated initial conflict between the heroine and hero was hard to swallow.
