Shifting Shadows

Rate this book
You’d think having the ability to shift into a deadly creature of the night would garner some respect, right? Forced to live in the shadows of the human world, Tiberius and Horacio silently stalk the city streets ready to protect others at the first sign of trouble. Utter secrecy—their race’s most sacred law—was established long ago to prevent the triggering of an ancient prophecy. Barb is a Carolina girl by right and a Texan by birth. By day, she’s a desk jockey for a rural transportation company and a book lover, reading through as many books as she can. At night, though, she turns into her alter ego: a writer—cape optional, depending on her mood.

Her stories are a mix of real-life events, personal experiences, and the craziness of her own imagination and those of her best friends. And when their imaginations blend together, it can be crazy. Barb writes in multiple genres, encounters new adventures, creates new worlds, and has a fantastic time breathing life into new stories, creating something she hopes inspires anyone who reads to fall in love with them as she has.

Barb lives by one little rule: tomorrow is never guaranteed, so make sure you live each day to its fullest.

I was entering a new world of Shuler's books when I started this one, but I was very eager for the journey.
I found both the list of Character Names and Creature Descriptions to be helpful in setting up my mind for this new adventure.
The prologue was so stunningly written that I could already feel the pain and pent-up emotions along with these characters. Shuler is fabulous at weaving her words together in such as way as to pull the reader completely into her worlds. I already know this is going to be an amazing and thrilling adventure.
There was plenty of heat in Chapter 8 and onward. I was fully invested in these characters and watching them embrace their attraction.
As secrets were revealed further on in the story, I was very curious about how it would alter their relationship and plans for the future. It seemed there was more at stake than they realized, and I found that very intriguing. As Jasmine learned more and more and pieced the truth about herself together, I was absolutely hooked.
There was also no shortage of action from that point on as the conflicts for Jasmine ensued.
So many battles of raging bodies and emotions. It was a whirlwind from there until the end. I really enjoyed this one - even more so since it's not my usual genre to read.

Shifting Shadows by Barb Shuler is an adrenaline filled fantasy of phenomenal proportions. The world she has created is full of every shifter ever created, suspense, mayhem, magic, family and love. Horatio and Tiberius have q strong mated relationship when they are drawn to Jasmine a human or so they think but find she is part fae and Wolf. Schuler's character development and amazingly detailed storyline keep this book moving at a fast pace and you will not be able to put it down. Be prepared for a war of epic proportions, characters you will both love and hate and steamy love scenes. I only hope there are more books to go with this one because I'm hooked.

Bait 'n' Switcheroosky

Somehow I didn't know this was an MM tease but actually MFM because uhhhh ... the cover and blurb are female free. By the time I realized the author was really gonna go there, I was already reading it and, despite some grave misgivings, wanted to see if this book could entice me back into reading the occasional MMF MFM or MF title. Plus, I generally don't DNF for anything less than catastrophically bad writing. That's not the case here. So I finished it. But yeah, the whole MF, MFM, MMF thing? Not happenin' still, at least if I can avoid it.

The male MCs are mates and have been together for ages and then they stumble on Jasmine the human who they are compelled by fate to bond with despite the fact that neither man was previously bisexual and mating with humans is forbidden for what seems like Very Good Reasons.

I dunno. I'm chafed by the forced bisexuality and the fact that these guys had no choice in accepting a third [and a woman] into what was already a wholly complete and fulfilling soulbond relationship.

This wasn't a case where both men knew they were missing a third or a society where there were frequent triads, it felt more like an obligatory vagina got thrust into the plot for ... what? Appealing to the masses? PC purposes? Why not make the third male? Oh right. Apparently the uterus at the end of the vagina was a must for prophetic reasons, and because OF COURSE Jassy's not really human. Otherwise these fellas would have happily lived together for a verrrrry long time with just each other. I was wishing she would die. The whole time.

This one has my inner feminist frothing at the mouth. My less introverted Pride Crusader/Parade-r is in a berserker rage.

The synopsis and cover are misleading for those expecting an MM gay romance, and while the world was super interesting, I was too offended by ^^ the above ^^ to enjoy it. Plus, I've long since lost patience for anything MF and this title did nothing to ameliorate that.

People into MMF and MFM menages, fantasy, shifters, faerie etc. will probably enjoy this. I was too pissed about the bait and switch.

First I want to give props to the author on the world building - An amazing combination of shifters and fae and magic
I honestly wish this had more - there were so much going on and so many great characters within this story that I truly craved to know more about and wished to have connected with on a more intimate level as a reader
This story was brimming with suspense - action - and definitely some seriously sweet and steamy romance
Fate brought our three main characters together - two shifters and one human - breaking every rule that was ever laid before them - but you will understand why when you read and I have to say I loved the surprise
Jasmine is a firecracker of a human - she has a special gift that allows her to identify when someone is not quite human and we all know what happens when you cry wolf ...
Horacio and Tiberius are a mated pair and Guardians it is their job to keep the humans safe and the shifters in line. But what happens when fate decides the two need a little more "fire" in their lives?
Their fateful meeting leads to an epic fantasy tale that is filled with suspense and romance and oh so many twists that will leave your head and your heart spinning

I would have granted five stars as the tone and plot were just out of this world - my problem was the lack of detail - I wanted to know more - the why's - the who's and the how's. There were so many great opportunities to give me what I wanted!

I do hope this becomes a series as I would like some answers but alas, for now, I will have to be sated.

3 1/2 out of 5 stars
Welcome to the world of the guardians . Horacio and Ty are shifters a bear and a jaguar . They are mates and guardians, they keep the peace between the shifters, fae and humans . They were happy together in their own little world until the night when they saved Jasmine a human . Their lives are turned upside down . When they find out they are all mates and that Jasmine is more then human . When the world comes crashing around them and it takes all of them to get Jasmine back in their arms .
This is a m/f/m romance with a paranormal twist . The characters are well written but I felt like I couldn't connect with Jasmine . She came off way to pure at the beginning . But as I read she kind of grew on me . Horacio and Ty are sexy and sweet in so many ways. There are so many characters in this book you kind of get lost in them . You would really want Horacio and Ty protecting you oh and climb them like a spider monkey occasionally . I liked the way they were with Jasmine .

This was a good read but I really did find myself getting lost in the abundance of characters . The author takes us on a fantasy adventure , with Fae , shifters oh and dragons . Yes people we have dragons . I liked the concept of the book but I would of loved to have a little bit more back story on the main characters . The book read fast and I finished it in an afternoon . Over all I did really enjoy this book and the story line was good . So if you want a really steamy read for your hot summer reading list check it out

This is an entertaining read by Barb Shuler, a paranormal romance that delves into the world of shifters and fae. It is not what you first expect though from reading the blurb. This is a mmf threesome book which is fine if that is your trope but this was a bit of a bait and switch by the author.

The characters in Shifting Shadows were all engaging and I loved how the main characters interacted with each other.

At times the complexity of the world was over whelming as it was easy to get lost in the story tring to be told. The author created a number of new races, which were thankfully explained, but these sometime detracted rather than enhanced the plot. Also unpronouncable secondary character names unfortunately became the norm.

Overall I enjoyed this novel and would recommend it if you were looking for a mmf paranormal shifter romance.

** Overall rating: 5

I really appreciate these books that make it so painless to grant a 5 star rating and what is even more surprising is, this book does not lack for hot and steamy scenes! My particular cravings in reading selections do not require the mature scenes at all. Too many times I find myself having to skip over the scenes because they felt thrown in as opposed to fitting in with the story. This book is a rare exception for me. The storyline grabbed me from chapter one and the characters felt so relatable I ended the book wanting to know what their future lives look like. The passion leapt from the pages so much it truly surprised me when I couldn’t help but drink in each word. The flow of the book was seamless, the storyline moved like silk. It felt wonderful to be totally swept away in this tale!

I absolutely love anything paranormal by this author!! Tiberius and Horacio are both guardians, they protect the humans from shifters and are mates. Horacio never found women sexually arousing but Tiberius dappled before they were mates. It was a big surprise that they both found Jasmine to be so alluring. Come to find out that was because she was the mate to both of them. They were happy in their little triad until everything went to sh*t around them. When danger is lurking they will do everything to protect Jasmine, but she’s no helpless little human, she is something more and has powers of her own and they grow and grow every day. Will everyone come out alive in the end?

** I voluntarily read an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review **

Wow. What an amazing story. I love this story. The characters and species in this story are classics... with a bit of a twist. Horacio, Tiberius and Jasmine are awesome. I love the dynamic between them. It's a wonderful triad and it's was a pleasure to go this journey with them. Each of them bring something different and unique to the trio and it just wouldn't be the same without all of them together. The supporting characters round out this story perfectly. There are up, downs and even a few moments that will throw you sideways. I can't wait to read more. This author never disappoints.

Shifting Shadows

3.5 for me. I enjoyed the concept and the pace of the story. I don’t know I had a little bit of a hard time getting into the story and the characters. The main character Jasmine kind of rubbed me the wrong way so it was hard to care for her character. While I liked the overall story itself there was just something about it that I couldn’t get into.

Shifting Shadows by Barb Shuler

☆☆☆5 stars☆☆☆

Horacio, Tiberius and Jasmine. The perfect trio, in more ways than one. Horacio and Tiberius are guardians, but the night they stumble across Jasmine, becomes much more than they bargained for. It changes all three of their lives forever.

Jasmine is a little spitfire and gives the boys a run for their money. They never expected to feel such an electric connection to her, but now that they have her, she's become the missing piece to a life they never imagined they wanted or could have.

When danger is upon them, the boys will do anything to protect what has become theirs, even if that means risking their own lives to save Jasmine. Talk about sexiness times two!

The supporting characters help bring out the best in this awesome story. It wouldn't be the same without them. If you read Primal Darkness from Barb Shuler, you'll be in love with this one. Absolutely amazing!

I’m a sucker for a paranormal romance. Shifting Shadows was just that but with a twist. I don’t think I’ve ever read a paranormal romance involving three souls.

Jasmine has always felt she was different but could never put her finger on why. One night a group of men commit a heinous act against her and she is saved by Tiberius and Horatio. She feels this odd pull toward them and decides to go with it. Feelings collide and so do bodies and Jasmine finds herself pulled into a world she thought only existed in books and lore. This is only the beginning of her new life.

Ty and Horatio are a rare mated pair. They don’t see many if any same sex pairs but they are also guardians. They are tasked with keeping the shifters and fae on their best behavior. When they rescue Jasmine they both can’t deny the pull. They thought their life was complete but it was only just the beginning.

Barb Shuler weaved a pretty interesting and steamy world. The chemistry between Ty, Horatio and Jasmine was off the charts. Seriously I need a fan. Woo. I couldn’t find much fault in the story other than it was a lot of characters and background info really packed into this book yet for me it was a quick read. Once I started I couldn’t put it down. I would certainly read more by this author.

First word to describe this book is HOT. I normally don't read PNR as it's just not my thing BUT I really enjoyed this story. And I loved that Barb Shuler put a glossary so you could say the names correctly and could remember what each type meant. I really enjoyed the relationship between Tiberius (Ty), Horacio and Jasmine. They were so sweet to her and she to them. There were a few twists that tricked me up for a bit before I was able to figure it out in my mind. Great book that I hope has plans to be out into a series!
