Haylee Jordan is no stranger to heartbreak. Growing up, she quickly learned to fend for herself, and after a hellish night in high school, she knows the only way to keep her heart safe is to keep everybody else out.
Ryan Porter considers himself married to the military. After losing his father and brother at a young age and witnessing the subsequent downfall of his mother, Ryan has sworn off any semblance of love.
After Ryan helps Haylee out of a sticky situation, the two find themselves growing closer, but with Ryan's impending deployment and Haylee's trust issues, they vow to never let it become something more.
However, Ryan quickly finds himself falling for Haylee, and Haylee is unable to deny that Ryan makes her happier than she's been in a long time. Will the two of them be able to overcome their pasts and open their hearts? Or will they always be determined to keep everyone at a safe distance?

Loved this story so much. Ryan and Haylee were incredible characters. Their story was touching and gripping. I couldn't get enough of them and their perfectness together. Who doesn't love a military hottie?? Those are definitely the best ones. And I was glad I took a chance on their story. Though there was heartbreak, I finished with a happy sigh and joyful tears.
This book touched me. It was a very sad story. Between a girl with a sad past and a guy who has no one but his best friend. You will need a few boxes of tissues to read this. There is a happy ending. I'll tell you that
Thank you, Megan Green, for providing me with a copy of this book!
Megan Green knocked her debut out of the park!
Haylee and Ryan find each other when neither is really ready or able to commit to a relationship. But like in all good relationships, “love” didn’t ask for their approval before moving right in.
Haylee has been hurt and though she’s not giving up details, readers will know immediately that whatever took place left a deep scar. Even making friends is hard for her now.
Ryan is in the Army. He is set to deploy again in just a few weeks. He knows, first hand, how devastating life can become to those left behind after the death of a loved one, and he’s determined not to be put in a situation to leave someone behind.
Both had rocky childhoods and found their salvation in close friends who loved them and cared for them through the pain and the hardship (hello Chris and Amanda – two most awesome supporting characters ever).
Being thrust together in friendship could be the best thing that’s ever happened to them or the worst, the choice is entirely up to them and Green takes them through that discovery, with all its tears, laughter, and confusion expertly. Her writing is on point and for a debut, Indie author that is huge in my opinion. I felt this novel – felt it in my core. I sobbed (not cried…SOBBED), and I did it more than once. Green poured Haylee and Ryan out on the pages of her book. She left every bit of them out there for readers and I guarantee their presence can be felt.
Likewise, her supporting characters don’t disappoint. While not as ever-present as Haylee and Ryan, they are still poured out on the page, in living color, for us as readers. I don’t think one can walk away from this book without feeling connected to several (maybe all) of these characters. Seriously, we all need an Earl and Gordon in our lives (just wait until you get there…you’ll agree)!
This is a sweet, tender, funny, and often gut-wrenching love story filled with brokenness and surprises. Readers will enjoy this story and walk away with a little Haylee and Ryan (and supporting cast) imprinted on their hearts.
So, what are you waiting for? GO BUY IT!!
I was provided with an ARC of this book by the publisher or author in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I am not compensated for any of my reviews.
I'm going to keep this short. I did not like this book. It wasn't because I didn't like the story necessarily. It was just boring. There wasn't enough character or plot development. The relationship seemingly appears out of nowhere. I've read similar stories that were much better.
That being said, maybe I've just read too many types of this story. Maybe I'm too sensitized to bad writing. If that weren't the case, I might have liked this. It is a sweet story of a military H and an h who has survived some pretty serious trauma trying to make the best go of things that they can.
What I liked: 1) There wasn't a lot of sex in this book. I like that. It makes whatever scenes there are so much more meaningful. 2) No ow/om drama. No cheating. 3) The alternating povs.
What I didn't like: 1) The dialogue is really cringe worthy. No one in real life talks to another person the way the characters in this book do. There was a lot of telling, not a lot of showing. 2) The relationship between the MCs is really a surprise. Not in the "Wow, I can't believe they finally got smart and got together" kind of surprise, but the "Wow, I had no idea they knew each other well enough to have a relationship" surprise. It wasn't believable and so I didn't care about it. 3) The plot of this story was very simple and boring. It needed more development, as did the characters in this story. 4) Too low angst for me.
I don't even know where to begin with this review, so I guess I will start with watch out Nicholas Sparks there is a new author in town! There was so much feeling and reality in this book. To say that I am proud of my fellow book loving friend would be an understatement. I expect big things from you Megan and by the looks of this debut novel I know I won't be disappointed.
Obviously I am a sucker when it comes to a military romance book. My husband was in the military so sometimes I feel a strange connection to the characters and I always want to love these types of books because who doesn’t love a strong military hero who sweeps the heroine off her feet?
Safe Distance was a hard book for me to get into at first. We all can guess that something happened to Haylee fairly quickly because of not just how she is with Ryan but with everyone in her life. You feel sympathetic towards her but at the same time at least for me after a while she rubbed me wrong. The way she would just freeze Ryan out made me like her character less to be honest. Now don’t take me as being unsympathetic to what happened to make her the way she is, because I did cry for her and her past but eventually I just couldn’t care any more.
Ryan was deploying and just wanted a friend, it turned into more for him but even knowing he may lose her for wanting more he just wanted her friendship the most. Maybe it is because I am a wife of a previous military member and know exactly the stresses and uncertainty they feel when preparing for a deployment that made me on Ryan’s side more, or maybe it was just because from the start Ryan held a place in my heart that I wanted more for him. Was he always perfect? No he wasn’t because at times he could be an asshole but there is a very emotional reason for it, and I wanted to beat the living hell out of Haylee for her adding to his pain at one point.
There are things that happen that will make you cry ugly tears, and trust me you will cry, but there are also moments that will make you laugh out loud. Just know that Safe Distance will make you feel all sorts of emotions. I don’t know if the author is going to make a series or not out of this because Ryan and Haylee’s ending is a HEA, but I would like to see other books with some of the secondary characters, one in particular who deserves a HEA of their own.
This is a story about love, loss, heartache and family. This story will tug at your heart. It will make your heart race. It will make your eyes leak. But in the end, it will pull two people, who have no one, together and make their broken pieces fit together.
Ryan was this real soldier, with real feelings and reactions. It was nice to see that. Too many times you read about these big and tough guys who won't show emotion, but Ryan wasn't like that. I appreciated that.
Ryan was just fine just being a soldier, that is until he meets Haylee and the friendship he originally wanted starts to become something more. But she's maintaining the friendship status, because of her past. But soon, heartache brings them closer and feelings are brought up to the surface and then they can't hold back.
Haylee must work through her past, in order to give herself fully to Ryan. Keeping him at a safe distance isn't going to work forever.
Really 4 and a half stars. :) It's not often that a book can make me cry let alone reduce me to a sobbing hot mess. But that's exactly what happened with Safe Distance. I was immediately drawn in by the characters, especially Haylee and Ryan along with the storyline. Most who know me know that I'm not a huge fan of contemporary romance or stories with lots of angst on them but this one sucked me in from the get go. Absolutely amazing. And you know what else? This is her debut novel, which was the bomb, but Megan's writing is only going to get better and better. I can't wait to read the next one. So yes, I now read contemporary romance, but only if it's by Megan Green.
I've always been a sucker for a good love story, and this did not disappoint. I adored Haylee and Ryan, and the friendship they had with Amanda and Chris, respectively, as well as the friendship that developed between Haylee and Emma. All of these characters were likable and extremely relatable, .
Safe Distance is a fantastic debut from brand spankin' new author Megan Green - well done! :)
If you are hoping for the run-of-the-mill military romance, this isn't it. This is full of love and heartbreak. And, amazingly, it's more about the man's emotional development than the woman's. Haylee definitely had her own demons to overcome, but our hero is put through the wringer and he comes out the other side changed for the better.
I truly appreciated how their relationship wasn't all about sex. I also appreciated how the characters supported each other through tough times. Awesome debut full of promise!
This story is about Haylee and Ryan. Two people who don't want a relationship but are very drawn to each other. You knew from the beginning that something happened to Haylee and it kept me interested and eager to find out what. All the side characters are amazing as well. I laughed, cried, smiled, and cried some more and swooned. I'm looking forward to her next book!
You will cry, at least I did. So, tissues are a must. Haylee's broken. Ryan is trying to find his way. Good supportive friends. Life's unfortunate circumstances. Two people who belong together. This is just one of these stories that breaks your heart. And, dear Megan Green, this is no "little story". Your debut book magically touched my heart...
I don't know why I waited so long to read this! It's freakin awesome! I laughed, cried, swooned... you name it. Megan did an amazing job on her debut novel. This woman obviously has a lot of talent and passion for writing. I can't wait to read more. Ok, I'm off to read book 2!
Blurb: Haylee Jordan is no stranger to heartbreak. Growing up, she quickly learned to fend for herself, and after a hellish night in high school, she knows the only way to keep her heart safe is to keep everybody else out.

I read so many books that at times it can be difficult to find one truly stands out and for the right reasons, what are those reasons, well that is the problem everybody has different criteria but for me, I need to be absorbed, I need to have characters I can relate to and care about and I want it all with a smidge (and in some cases a very large smidge) of sauciness on the side! So did I get that with this, well I think I did, maybe not a huge man size dollop of extra spiciness but I certainly got characters that mattered and a plot that I fell right into and since this was a debut novel I have to say the author did a sterling job. The story centres on Hayley and Ryan. Haylee was testy character for me to get to grips with, I couldn’t put my finger on it to be honest but just every now and then, she set my fingers twitching and I had to stop myself from skimming over what she had to say (No, really I know it is a bad habit, if the character was in front of me I would roll my eyes but since she isn’t, I skim- I have smacked my own hand for doing in on numerous occasions!) I got that things hadn’t been smooth sailing for her but she wore her pain a little too much like a coat of armour that was to remain impenetrable rather than a cloak that could be peeled away. She was harsh at times and cold – unnecessarily so in my opinion but that didn’t stop me shedding more than a few tears for her. Ryan on the other hand I fell for hard, he wanted a friend, he knew that wanting more out of their relationship could cost him the precious little that he already had but he couldn’t help how he felt, but managing to wrestle his feelings into shape, he settled on having the best friendship he could rather than nothing at all, after all he wasn’t prepared to let her go. I loved his misplaced determination, really there was something between this pair that was never just going to accept being friends, and their souls wanted more! I had an underlying unsettled feeling about Ryan ,that he was hiding a pain that could rival Haylee’s but what it was I had no idea but when it was revealed, I was gobsmacked, completely blown away. Now I am not saying that he was a saint, far from it but of the two of them I certainly took to him more, although the truth about her past certainly opened my eyes to the fact that first impressions are not always fair. And I was unfair to Haylee. Her story was tragic in some parts, did it excuse her behaviour – no but it explained it! To sum it up the book is the story of two people with the capacity to love unconditionally, struggling to find a way through demons that were determined to destroy not only their pasts but their futures too. It showed that in order to move forward you have to look back, you have to deal with the crap and start afresh, learn to live, learn to love and most of all learn to trust. I cried at more points in this book that I would honestly like to admit to and not just a sniffle – big arsed ugly tears. But I also smiled at much of it too and chuckled my way through many of the old book and movie references along the way. This is an emotion read that requires to keep an open mind (some of the aspects of Haylee’s story are hard to read!) and most importantly to stick with them because they are worth it in the end.
*Copy provided by author in exchange for an honest review* This was my first book by Megan and I'm sad to say that I didn't enjoy any of it. I was really excited about reading it too since that cover is just gorgeous. Anyway, I felt the characters to be too transparent to us yet they almost never told each other anything of importance. I wanted angst but instead we got exactly what we saw. It was awfully predictable; nothing I haven't read before. There was so much crying from so many characters that it got on my nerves after the second time. I was beyond irritated that I had no sympathy for any of them at any time. It was super corny and with the way the story was executed, I didn't believe the main couple was 'in love' or even attracted to each other for one second. There was just NO way. They haven't even hung out for a week when they were already mentioning the 'L' word. Sure, they knew each other for 'a couple months' but did they hang out? No. You can't fall in love with someone who doesn't even open up to you and just keeps walking away from you. You can't fall in love with someone you know absolutely nothing about. Everything about this plot line was not believable and it wasn't a pleasant experience. Also, whenever a character was telling a story, it sounded like they were reading from a book. It didn't sound like an actual conversation two people would have. I wished I had liked the supporting characters better than the main ones in order to save this book but that wasn't the case either. One of the main female character's friend was too dependent on her boyfriend and it was irritating. Also, what sent me over the edge was that they all seemed to have The. Same. Exact. Personality and humor. Rare to no diversity whatsoever. This just drove me into a deeper slump.
Talk about a beautiful but heartbreaking story. I don't want to write too much and give anything away...we learn or at least sense early on that Haylee (h) has been hurt pretty bad. We are not sure what happened but it's something that closes her off from any type of relationship. She isn't interested in love or dating and she keeps her distance from most men.
Ryan (H) and Haylee cross paths one night when he helps her out of a bind, and they develop an instant attraction. This is not insta-love though. They happen to run into each other again and form a close friendship from that point on. Ryan being in the military doesn't want anything serious either. Both Ryan and Haylee respect each other and value their friendship. They have feelings that intensify but they don't want to act on it. Will they be able to remain friends and keep each other at a distance? Or will their feelings get in the way?
What I loved about this book. The evolvement of their relationship; I saw it ,I felt it, and I loved it. The character development, everyone was so likable but not perfect. The realness, this happens and that's what makes a lot of the subjects that were touched in this book so heartbreaking. The title, perfect. Oh yeah and a yummy military man. ;)
Yes this book is a bit of a tearjerker but it is heartwarming too. Great debut novel by Megan Green! I highly recommend.
*Thank you to the author for providing me with an eARC in exchange for a honest review.
My first Megan Green and military romance novel is proving to be rather amazing!
Not to mention extremely heart-breaking, devastating and just plain sad but sweet!
Haylee Jordan was strong enough to survive her nightmares…yet that doesn’t mean that she would be free from them. Seeing Haylee suffering from the remnants of her nightmare makes me really sad and extremely pissed off with the people who did that to her.
(Like I will-kick-their-asses-if-I-ever-get-a-hold-of-them kind of pissed, and yes, THEY BETTER RUN!)
Ryan Porter is such a sweet guy. I swear, there’s no other people out there who can be as sweet, as patient, as gentle and SELFLESS as Ryan!
HIS. SELFLESSNESS. HER. SUFFERING.
TOO. MUCH. FEELS.
Ryan and Haylee stays at a safe distance with each other. They feel for each other but neither of them dares to take that one step. It’s so sad and my heart goes out to them.
(Okay…does ‘GET TOGETHER ALREADY AND STOP MAKING ME CRY’ consider sad?)
Safe distance is a well-written novel that will make you cry and smile at the sweetness of love!
Highly recommended for readers to prepare themselves for an emotional ride!
I’m a sucker for a good military romance and Ms Green does excellent at creating a wonderful tale I couldn’t put down.
Ryan is determined to stay single and carefree, but he can’t deny his friendship with Haylee who is closed off and hesitant to let others in. Haylee agrees to be friends with Ryan, but can’t accept more than that.
Their friendship is enough for a while, but eventually they both find they want more. They fought hard to keep their distance, but they fight just as hard to get their relationship. Both of them have demons and both of them have some convincing to do for the other. I enjoyed watching the relationship grow and change.
I so enjoyed reading Haylee and Ryan’s story, but having read Soldier’s Heart, the 2nd book in the series, first, I became even more in love with Emma and her journey to love. This series has captured my heart and I’m okay with not getting it back right away.
*** I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book ***
Wow. This book knocked my socks off. We follow Haylee, who has such a tragic history and she meets Ryan, who is a solider. You can feel that chemistry between the two of them though Haylee fights it tooth and nail which honestly, I cannot fault her for given what you learn later in the book about her. Ryan has his own tragic past, but it doesn’t stop him from going after what he wants, which was Haylee. He is such a sweet character that all you wanted to do was hug him during the rough parts in the book. Like the title, Haylee tries to keep Ryan at a safe distance but due to some events, it solidified how much they cared for each other. Though there were parts I wanted to smack both Haylee and Ryan, their story is a beautiful and sweet one. The supporting characters in Amanda, Chris and Emma are a blast. Very well written and enjoyable. Hoping to see more of a few characters!
Forgettable read. Nothing that really stuck out. The writing is mediocre. The dialogue and actions of the characters felt awkward.
The male voice (POV) sounded feminine. I know that male POVs are hard to write so that is why I feel some authors should just stick to one voice. The man were having the same conversations women do. There was no difference between the female and male voice.
I am not sure why Ryan tried so hard with Haylee in the beginning. I really did not feel much for Haylee. She was wishy-washy and all over the place.
You may love this story. Reading is subjective. This is my opinion. You may disagree 100%.
Megan Green has written an emotionally charged debut novel that knocked my socks off. Hayley and Ryan find each other at a time where neither want a relationship. This leads to a roller coaster of feelings that had me unprepared for what was to come. I am not one that normally reads military romance but this one changed my mind about the genre. Hayley is a lovable damaged character and Ryan is an alpha with a heart of gold. Their story will have you laughing, crying, and wanting even more. Hard to believe this is a debut novel! It kept me reading all night long and I cannot wait to read more by Megan Green!
This was a perfectly sweet and realistically romantic debut novel that really impressed me. I started reading this book based off a few reviews and am glad I did. You often read a book and laugh to yourself at the ridiculousness of the romance within the pages. But the characters in this novel have a believable chemistry that fill every line and I easily continued reading until I was at the end. I'm not one for long reviews so in short, read this. You will NOT be disappointed. I believe this is a first novel by Megan Green and I'm hoping to see more from her!
Safe Distance is Megan Green's debut novel. Really what is there to day besides - holy shit, you go Megan! Safe Distance is well written and full of characters you will love (and I couple you may hate). The Author World should watch out because there is a new Rockstar in town. You are going to blow people away Megan and I can't wait to follow you on your journey. Congratulations on your debut. Well done.
Megan Green.... Where do i begin i can not say enough about this book. I absolutely loved Haylee and Ryan i don't think i have ever cried so much with a book before in my life. You have defentally become one of my top favorites.I can't wait to see what you have in store for the future. Well done!!!!!
This is the first book this Author has written?! WOW, just WOW! I abso~freakin~lutely~ LOVED this story! The characters were amazing and I loved every one of them! As the Mother of a Soldier, this brought alot of emotions for me and I just adored Chris and Emma's story as well as Ryan and Haylee's story - amazing and heartfelt! I felt like I was right there going through their lives with them! HIGHLY recommend this one! On to the second book...starting...NOW! Beautiful! <3
What an amazing debut novel from Megan Green. I absolutely loved Haylee and Ryan. The two had been through so much but the way they came together was amazing. Megan Green sure knows how to tug on the heart strings. I found myself with tears in my eyes a few times.
I can't wait to read more by this author. Hopefully in the tune of the best friend's story.
I loved this book. I cried happy & sad tears. It kept me interested and kept my attention the entire time. I didn't want to stop reading until the book was done. This was an amazing first book Megan and I can't wait to read more!
