Lămâi, cărți și prieteni este povestea emoționantă a lui Calypso, fetița care învinge durerea provocată de absența mamei cu ajutorul magiei lecturii și al prieteniei, cucerind inimile cititorilor de pretutindeni. Calypso poate fi văzută de obicei singură, cu nasul în cărți. Dar, din ziua în care în clasa ei își face apariția o nouă colegă, Mae, la rândul ei pasionată de citit și de scris povestiri, între cele două fete se leagă o prietenie strânsă. Locuința lui Mae este agitată, veselă și gălăgioasă – cum, de altfel, este și ea –, iar din cauza asta lui Calypso îi place să-și petreaca timpul acolo.

După moartea mamei lui Calypso, tatăl ei se transformase într-un om retras și distant. Dar, în clipa în care descoperă tristul secret ascuns în biblioteca acestuia, Calypso își dă seama că ceva nu este deloc în regulă.

Va reuși Calypso să rescrie povestea familiei sale și să îi ofere un final fericit?

Jo Cotterill has had several careers - actor, musician, teacher, newspaper seller - but is now a full-time writer in Oxfordshire. She loves writing for all ages and has published over twenty books. A Library of Lemons is a book from the heart about making connections and what it really means to be human. Jo loves going into schools and talking about books and reading, and can be found making cards and writing music when she's not spending time with her husband and two young daughters.

Câte învățăminte are cărticica asta! Ne spune povestea unei fetițe care învață că și copiii trebuie să aibă grijă de părinți, nu doar invers. Că și părinții fac buba pe suflet și au nevoie să fie pansați. Calypso este vocea copiilor care se închid în ei și cred că asta le va alunga problemele. Dar ce știu ei? De fapt, asta doar le aduce altele. Romanul are un mesaj emoționant despre responsabilitate, prietenie, iubire, dar, cel mai important, despre pierdere și cum să o accepți, pentru că numai așa o poți depăși. O lectură foarte dulce, ca o ciocolată caldă care te încălzește și te face să te simți în siguranță. Cu multe bezele.

Annesinin ölümünden sonra babası ile tek başına kalan Calypso yalnız kalmış bir çocuk. İşin kötü yanı ise yalnız olmak, birilerine ihtiyaç duymamak, sadece ve sadece kitapların dünyasında yaşamak ona göre normal. Çünkü babası onu böyle büyütmüş, ona insanın içindeki manevi gücü bulmasını ve kimseye ihtiyaç duymamayı öğütleyip durmuş. Ama 10 yaşında olan ve yıllardır yalnız kalan bir çocuk nereye kadar tek başına ayakta kalabilir ki ?

Manevi gücün kendi içinde bulman gereken bir şey olduğunu düşünürdüm hep.
Şimdi biliyorum ki en güçlü insanlar diğerlerini seven ve onların da kendilerini sevmesine izin verenler. 'Kimse bir ada değil.' diyen bir şair vardı, sanırım şimdi bunun ne demek olduğunu anlıyorum.

Calypso'nun hayatı bir gün okula yeni gelen kız sayesinde değişir. Kendisi gibi kitaplara düşkün olan bu kız tek başına olmaya alışan Calypso için büyük bir değişiklik olur ve zamanla hayatında birilerinin varlığına ne kadar ihtiyacı olduğunu anlar. Hayatına Mae'in girişi ile evlerindeki dengelerde değişir ve Calypso'nun babasının içine çekildiği kabuğundan sıyrılma vakti gelir.

Akıcı ve sıcak dili ile insanı gülümseten bir kitaptı. Çocuk kitaplarında her zaman yetişkinler için de çok güzel dersler oluyor işte bu yüzden onları hala seviyorum ve keyif alarak okuyorum.

'Duyguları bir şişeye doldurup saklayabilmek isterdim, böylece ihtiyacınız olduğu başka bir anda onları yeniden hissedebilirdiniz. O anda hissettiklerim birkaç şişeyi mutluluğun parlak kırmızı, pembe ve turuncu helezonları ile doldurabilirdi.'

Il y a des livres dont on a le sentiment que l’on va l’adorer et celui-ci en fait parti.
Et cela même si c’est un livre jeunesse.
Dès les premières pages j’ai été happé par l’histoire qui est toute douce et une certitude s’est insinuée en moi : j’aurais adoré, mais adoré, lire ce livre à l’âge de 10/12 ans ! Et je pense qu’il aurait fait parti de mes livres coup de coeur dont je ne veux plus me séparer. La preuve, il est hors de question que je ne le mette pas dans ma bibliothèque à moi.

Cette histoire est vraiment touchante et ses fillettes trop mignonnes .
L’auteur arrive avec une facilité déconcertante à nous faire retrouver très vite notre âme d’enfant.
L'histoire traite en délicatesse de sujets très sérieux comme la solitude, le deuil d’un parent et la dépression avec beaucoup de tact, tout en étant très positif avec l'espoir de se reconstruire.
Les livres jouent un rôle très important, tous les amateurs de livres apprécieront forcément car il y a nombreuses références à travers le roman, dont beaucoup que je ne connaissais pas, et il y a des chances que comme moi vous aurez envie de lire ces livres à la suite de votre lecture.

Ce roman qui a vraiment été un coup de coeur citronné pour moi.
L’automne arrive, alors n’hésitez pas à le mettre dans votre pile à lire pour cette saison, car il est idéal pour une lecture doudou avec un chocolat chaud.

Calypso is living with her dad. Her mother passed away a few years ago. Her dad is emotionally closed off and spends all of his time working on his book, A History of the Lemon. Even though Calypso is ten years old she has to clean the house, look after her father and cook her own dinners. There's never a stocked fridge and the house is dusty. Fortunately Calypso can lose herself in stories. She reads and she writes and her father has taught her that being her own company is enough. That changes when Calypso meets Mae. Mae is vibrant and cheerful and she brings Calypso the joy she has missed in her life.

It isn't easy for Calypso to share her world with Mae. While she's been at Mae's house many times she avoids inviting her back. When Mae finally visits Calypso's house Calypso can't hide what her life is really like any longer. What will happen to her and her father now that other people know?

A Library of Lemons is an amazing story about a girl who learns to find light and happiness after being lonely for a long time. My heart ached when I read about Calypso and her father. Sometimes life can be unfair, but being brave helps to get through the bad times. I loved her strength and her creativity. Calypso and Mae are both intelligent main characters. They love stories and it's clear that Jo Cotterill is passionate about books and reading. I loved her enthusiasm about the topics she's chosen for her book.

Jo Cotterill has written an amazing story about a sensitive topic. There are so many children who don't have an easy life at home and she writes about it in an understanding and moving way. Her sentences flow easily and her writing is beautiful. A Library of Lemons is sad, but hopeful. It's a book about light and dark. I loved the philosophical character of the story. It's interesting, but also easy to understand. I liked this book very much highly recommend it.

This book was a gift from a friend who knows just how much I adore books… and lemons.

I had just finished Edith’s Diary by Patricia Highsmith when my eyes landed on the recently arrived copy of A Library of Lemons. Its bright cover seemed to whisper promises of a lightness that I most certainly craved after having read the haunting Highsmith. Little did I know…

I would say that A Library of Lemons is a considerately written novel about the importance of people – when I say people I don’t simply mean the ones that surround us, the others, but also ourselves, our own existence.

People need people. You can’t just keep yourself apart all the time so that you don’t get hurt. All that means is you get hurt anyway and you’re alone.

I believe Jo Cotterill more than succeeds at conveying the message that we need each other. We may not always know how to reach out, we may not always recognize when someone else is trying to reach out, but closing our eyes altogether will certainly not help. We may feel as if we are protecting our loved ones, but they know, they know something is going on, they just don’t know how to ask – or perhaps they are afraid.

I think this is one important book, particularly for young readers. The language is more than suitable for youngsters and the storyline creates a safe haven that I believe is vital to the process of learning how to open up. In a world that seems far too quick to judge, and way too slow when it comes to forgiving, A Library of Lemons is like a friendly hand leading us toward a middle ground that seems utopic to many, but that exists.

A novel about grief, yes. A Library of Lemons is the light at the end of a tunnel that might at first feel endlessly long. A Library of Lemons is a reminder that no matter how long, a tunnel will always be a tunnel and that means it will always have a way out.

Calypso ist eher eine Einzelgängerin, doch plötzlich taucht Mae auf und holt sie aus ihrem Schneckenhaus. Denn Calypso lebt mit ihrem Vater nach dem Tod ihrer Mutter alleine und ihr Vater arbeitet sehr viel, am meisten an seinem Buch "Die Geschichte der Zitrone".
Doch als sie Maes Familie und Lebenstil sieht, kommt sie immer mehr ins grübeln, ob alles so richtig läuft bei ihr zu Hause und ob ihr Vater vielleicht doch nicht so gut mit seiner Trauer umgehen kann.

Calypso ist für ihr Alter schon sehr selbsständig, gezwungener maßen. Außerdem ist sie ein riesen Bücherwurm und steckt ihre Nase immer in irgendein Buch. Da können Mae und sie ja nur Freunde werden, den Mae liest auch eine Menge Bücher.
Wir begleiten Calypso auf ihren Weg aus der Einsamkeit raus. Wir erleben ihre Unsicherheit im Umgang mit anderen Menschen und beginnen den Kopf über ihren Vater zu schütteln. Sie lernt, wie eine funktionierende Familie aussieht und beginnt zu reflektieren, dass bei ihr zu Hause nicht alles richtig läuft.
Jo Cotterill hat eine kleine süße Geschichte geschrieben, über Freundschaft, Familie und Trauerbewältigung. Der Schreibstil ist locker luftig und die Geschichte somit auch schnell durch gelesen. Doch habe ich auch das Gefühl, dass ich Calypso bald wieder vergessen habe. Für diese süße kurzweilige Geschichte gebe ich daher 4 Sterne.

4,5 Sterne.
Eine wunderbar erzählte Geschichte über die Bedeutung von Freundschaft und Zusammenhalt. Und dabei von der jungen Protagonistin so überzeugend geschildert, dass es mir oft die Kehle zugeschnürt hat. Calypso hat in ihrem jungen Leben mit so großen Aufgaben zu tun und schlägt sich so fantastisch. Ein herrliches Buch mit viel Gefühl, ohne dramatisch sein zu müssen. Hier wird auf ruhige Art und Weise für Atmosphäre gesorgt. Bemerkenswert vielleicht auch, dass dieses Buch ohne Antagonisten auskommt. Alle Figuren sind auf ihre Weise liebenswert. Bisher mein liebstes der Bücher aus dem Königskinder Verlag.

O carte foarte emotionanta despre puterea comunitatii si despre cat de important e sa ai prieteni si oameni pe care sa poti baza. Daca la inceput, Calypso si tatal ei se bazeaza doar pe "forta lor interioara" pentru a razbate, pe parcursul cartii isi dau seama ca nu pot trai singuri si ca oamenii, in general, au nevoie de semeni si la bine si la greu.

„Eine Geschichte der Zitrone“ ist der erste Roman von Jo Cotterill, der auch auf Deutsch erschien. In ihrer Heimat, der englischen Grafschaft Oxfordshire, hat sie bereits einige Bücher geschrieben, die ich nach diesem Leseerlebnis unbedingt alle lesen möchte. Denn Jo Cotterill hat mich mit ihrer bittersüßen, herzlichen und traurig-schönen Geschichte vollends überzeugt. „Eine Geschichte der Zitrone“ ist zum weinen und trotzdem voller Freude. Eine feine, zarte Erzählung über Freundschaft, Familie, Kindheit, Verlust, Depression und die Liebe zu Büchern.

Wie fühlt es sich an, den Großteil seines Lebens mit nur einem Elternteil zu verbringen, der sich noch dazu dem Kind entzieht? Der keine emotionale Nähe zulässt? Calypsos Vater schreibt seit dem Tod seiner Frau an seinem Lebenswerk über die Zitrone und vergisst darüber seine Tochter. Er überlässt sie sich selbst, sie muss die Wäsche waschen, sich alleine beschäftigen und sich aus den spärlichen Inhalten des Kühlschranks selbst etwas zu Essen zubereiten. Darüber hinaus kümmert sie sich darum, dass es ihm an nichts fehlt. Dieses Maß an Verantwortung erscheint Calypso normal. Sie solle ihre innere Stärke finden, sagt ihr Vater. Sie brauche niemanden, außer sich selbst.

Diese Worte hat Calypso verinnerlicht und so sind ihre Bücher alles, was sie augenscheinlich braucht. Sie distanziert sich von anderen Kindern in der Schule und empfindet ihr Leben als vollkommen normal. Sie spürt erst, wie falsch und ungesund diese Art zu denken ist, als sie sich mit ihrer Klassenkameradin Mae anfreundet. Sie und ihre Familie zeigen ihr eine ganz andere Art „Familie“ zu sein. Sie realisiert, dass ihr Vater vielleicht doch nicht so stark ist, wie er vorzugeben scheint.

Ich habe mehr als einmal beim Lesen geweint, denn die Erzählung aus Calypsos Perspektive ist so herzzerreißend traurig, voller Wut und Kraft, voller Mut und Hoffnung, dass sie mich ganz tief im Inneren erschütterte. Sie fühlt sich verlassen, allein gelassen von einem Vater, der ihr zu wenig Beachtung schenkt und der sich nicht bemüht, eine Bindung zum eigenen Kind aufzubauen. Die Last, die Calypso dadurch zu tragen hat, wird irgendwann zu viel und entlädt sich in einem Sturm.

Wie Jo Cotterill ihre Geschichte geschrieben hat, hat mich sehr beeindruckt. Sie ist nicht lang, doch sie wirkt lange nach, denn die Bilder, die im Kopf des Lesers entstehen, die Gefühle, die geweckt werden, lassen sich nicht so leicht ins Regal stellen, wie das Buch selbst. Die Autorin verwendet Worte, die ins Mark treffen und Vergleiche, die ungeheuer treffend sind. Ihre Sprache ist ein Gedicht. Sie lässt einen fallen, furchtsam und beunruhigt, wenn Calypso den Boden unter den Füßen verliert und sie lässt einen trauern, wenn Calypso das Leiden ihres Vaters zu verstehen beginnt. Sie lässt einen aber ebenso lachen, da trotz aller Probleme und Sorgen der Geschichte doch eine unbestreitbare Wärme und Herzlichkeit innewohnt, denn Calypso und ihr Vater werden in ihrer Not nicht alleine gelassen.

ICH SCHREIE IHN IMMER WEITER AN, WERFE IHM SACHEN AN DEN KOPF, DIE ICH NOCH NIE IN DEN MUND GENOMMEN HABEN, ICH SCHLAGE UND SCHLITZE UND STECHE MIT WORTEN. SIE SPRUDELN AUS MIR HERAUS, ALS HÄTTE JEMAND EINE FLASCHE GIFT ENTKORKT. (SEITE 125)

Mae und ihre Familie, die Schule, das Jugendamt und Psychologen – sie alle sind da für sie und unterstützen nach Kräften. Diese selbstverständliche Warmherzigkeit trieb mir mindestens ebenso die Tränen in die Augen wie der einsame Alltag von Calypso. Allem zum Trotz ist sie sehr stark und sie ist auch eine starke Protagonistin. Offen, fantasievoll und verständnisvoll. Aber eben auch kindlich bedürftig und es schmerzt umso mehr, wenn diese selbstverständlichen Bedürfnisse nicht befriedigt werden konnten. Es gab Szenen, die zerrissen mir das Herz.

Jo Cotterill lässt Calypso eine absolut plausible Entwicklung durchmachen. Gleiches gilt für ihren Vater, der sich in seiner Trauer verliert und in Depressionen versinkt. Das macht aus „Eine Geschichte der Zitrone“ eine sehr einfühlsame Geschichte, die direkt aus dem Leben gegriffen ist.

Fazit

„Eine Geschichte der Zitrone“ von Jo Cotterill ist für mich eines der stärksten Bücher aus dem Königskinder Verlag. Eine Coming-of-Age Geschichte, intensiv und bittersüß, zart und tragisch-schön. Eine Geschichte darüber, wie Familie funktionieren kann, wenn sie nicht mehr richtig funktioniert, da Tod und Krankheit alles durcheinander wirbeln und verdrehen. Die Autorin berührt dabei mit klaren und starken Worten tief die Gefühle ihrer Leser.

Une très jolie lecture qui se lit très rapidement mais qui aborde des sujets importants. J'ai adoré l'univers littéraire qui tient une grande place dans ce roman. L'amitié est aussi un aspect de cette histoire qui m'a beaucoup plu. Assez jeunesse mais à découvrir.

Meinung:
Die 11-jährige Calypso setzt auf ihre innere Stärke, weil ihr Vater ihr das so beigebracht hat. Sie braucht keine Freunde, denn sie genügt sich selbst und vergräbt sich am allerliebsten in ihren Büchern. Das macht sie den Kindern in ihrer Klasse auch immer direkt klar, sofern diese versuchen sich mit ihr anzufreunden.
Doch Mae, das neue Mädchen, lässt sich von Calypso nicht einfach abweisen. Sie ist überzeugt und spürt, das sie beide dazu bestimmt sind Freundinnen zu werden.

Als Calypso merkt, das Mae nicht lockerlassen wird und außerdem ihre Leidenschaft für Bücher und Wörter teilt, entsteht tatsächlich schnell eine enge Freundschaft, die neben all den glücklichen und unbeschwerten Momenten aber auch die Erkenntnis für Calypso bereithält, das in ihrer eigenen Familie etwas ganz und gar nicht stimmt.

Seit dem Tod ihrer Mutter, da war sie gerade einmal 5 Jahre alt, lebt sie mit ihrem Vater alleine. Meist schließt er sich in seine Bibliothek ein und schreibt ein Buch über Zitronen, über die er sich wie ein Besessener sämtliches Wissen angeeignet hat. Calypso überlässt er dabei ganz sich selbst. Sie kocht, sofern Lebensmittel im Kühlschrank sind, was eher selten der Fall ist, sie wäscht ihre Klamotten aus denen sie bereits herauswächst und sie erinnert ihren Vater regelmäßig mal etwas zu essen oder eine Tasse Tee zu trinken.
Wie sehr und DAS sie sich um ihn kümmert, merkt Calypso erst, als Mae sie das erste Mal besuchen kommt und die Situation komplett aus dem Ruder läuft...

"Eine Geschichte der Zitrone" ist so ein wunderbares Buch *hach*. Eine Ode an die Freundschaft und die Liebe zu Büchern, aber auch ein sehr tiefgründiges, gefühlvolles Werk, das sich mit Themen wie Depression und Trauerbewältigung befasst.
Jo Cotterill ist ein wirklich großartiger Roman gelungen, der mich einerseits zum Schmunzeln brachte, andererseits zu Tränen rührte.
Der Schreibstil ist leicht und flüssig zu lesen und sorgt so dafür, das man sich ganz in der Geschichte verlieren kann, die leider viel zu schnell vorüber ist.

Calypso ist ein bezauberndes Mädchen, das aus naheliegenden Gründen, für ihre 11 Jahre schon unglaublich erwachsen ist. Durch Mae lernt sie nicht nur wie wichtig es ist, Freunde zu haben, sondern auch wie Familie funktionieren kann.
Sie ist zum Beispiel fasziniert davon, das sich die Maes Bruder und Mutter immer wieder streiten, sich aber trotzdem liebhaben. Wie kann das denn sein ? Das die Mutter ihn im einen Moment rügt, aber ihm im nächsten Moment liebevoll durch die Haare wuschelt ?

Diese kindliche Faszination die Calypso in solchen Augenblicken an den Tag legt, hat mich total gerührt und ich hatte immer das Bedürfnis sie mal in den Arm zu nehmen und zu drücken.

"Eine Geschichte der Zitrone" ist für mich ein weiteres Highlight aus dem Königskinder Verlag, wobei ich hier sagen muss, das dieser sowieso nur kleine Wunderwerke hervorbringt, die ich alle, trotz ihrer Unterschiede, gleichermaßen liebe. Ihr solltet sie unbedingt auch mal lesen und am besten mit diesem hier beginnen :)

24 hours after finishing this wonderful book, I'm still mentally and emotionally processing its themes. In simple terms, it's an easy read but it would take a mature KS2 to deal with the core issues of bereavement, mental breakdowns and young carers. These themes are beautifully woven through the story of a young girl, Calypso, who makes friends with a fellow book-worm, Mae. It's beautifully written and it's impossible not to feel deep sympathy and empathy for Calypso who has the weight of the world on her shoulders.

„Lămâi, cărți și prieteni” nu este doar un roman cu o copertă super drăguță. Este un roman plin de lecții, un roman plin de sensibilitate, de responsabilitate, de acceptare și de dragoste pentru cărți. Consider astfel de cărți foarte potrivite pentru copiii de astăzi. Au un mesaj pozitiv, unul care se subînțelege foarte ușor. Autoarea transmite învățăminte micuților ei cititori și țese o poveste despre prietenie și momentele care contează cu adevărat.

J'avais pas réalisé que c'était un roman jeunesse en commençant. C'est une histoire d'amitié mais aussi de deuil et de comment exprimer ces sentiments. C'était assez mignon et très bienveillant.

This was a lovely bitter sweet book.
Calypso, who is 10 and 1/2, has lost her mum 5 years ago and now lives alone with a father that has become absent minded and in whom she can’t rely on. In fact she seems the adult of the family.
When she befriends Mae, a new girl who just joined her school, she realises how lonely she was before meeting her. Calypso and Mae turn out to be kindred spirits (and both fans of Anne of Green Gables), which helps Calypso feel more ‘normal’.

I warmed up to Calypso as soon as I started reading this, I really enjoyed the way it was written. I’ll be looking for more books by Jo Cotterill.

The context is quite different, but the family situation somehow reminded me of ‘The Island of Missing Trees’.

Calypso hat es nicht leicht. Ihr Vater ist der Meinung, dass man sich selber der beste Freund sein soll, mit sich selber glücklich sein muss und nicht erwarten kann, dass einen andere Leute glücklich machen. So zieht sie sich in ihre geliebte Welt der Bücher zurück und liest selbst auf dem Schulhof. Aus diesem Grund ist sie in der Schule eine Aussenseiterin und auch zuhause kennt sie die Einsamkeit nur zu gut. Ihr Vater schreibt an seinem Meisterwerk "Eine Geschichte der Zitrone" und vergisst dabei immer wieder die Zeit, einzukaufen und wie es scheint, ab und zu sogar, dass er eine Tochter und Verantwortung hat.

Als Mae neu in die Klasse kommt und Interesse an ihr zeigt, zieht sie auch dieses Mal erst einmal eine Mauer um sich hoch und ignoriert Mae. Doch diese gibt nicht so schnell auf und so erkennen die beiden Mädchen, dass sie gleiche Interessen haben: das Lesen und das Schreiben.

Langsam lernt Calypso, dass ihre selbst auferlegte Einsamkeit nicht sein muss. Zwischen den beiden Mädchen entwickelt sich eine feine und besondere Freundschaft. Calypso liebt die Zeit bei Maes lebensfroher und etwas chaotischer Familie und Mae ist fasziniert von Calypsos eigener Bibliothek.

So erzählt Calypso in "Eine Geschichte der Zitrone" von ihrem Alltag in einem grossen, alten Haus, vom Zusammenleben mit ihrem Vater und den Problem die dieses mit sich bringt und nimmt einen mit auf die unterschiedlichsten Reisen durch ihre Bücher. Schnell wird einem klar, warum man auch selber eine Leidenschaft für Bücher hat und kann Calypso sehr gut verstehen.

Jo Cotterill hat eine ruhige Geschichte geschaffen, die durch die Kraft der Worte und einer emotionalen Handlung besticht. Ohne Action und grosses Drama schafft sie es, einen mitzureissen und zu begeistern. "Eine Geschichte der Zitrone" ist ein ganz besonderes Buch, optisch und inhaltlich ein Highlight.

Fazit:
Jo Cotterill konnte mich mit ihrer Geschichte positiv überraschen. "Eine Geschichte der Zitrone" ist ein ruhiges, tiefgründiges Buch, das ohne Drama und Action von Anfang an zu fesseln weiss. Es ist ein wunderbares Werk über die Freundschaft in all ihren Facetten und ein Lesemuss für alle Buchliebhaber.

Warning: tissues will be needed. Calypso's mum died, and now her dad has become very closed off and remote, telling her that she shouldn't cry but should instead develop 'inner strength'. Calypso is quite a solitary girl relying on the company of the fictional characters in her beloved books until a new girl, Mae arrives at her school who has a similar love of words and books. The girls become fast friends but Mae's very normal, noisy family life serves to highlight the disparity with Calypso's quiet, lonely life with her dad. Things come to a head in a heartbreaking scene that involves lemon throwing and afterwards Calypso finally starts to get some help with her father's and her own grief.
Jo Cotterill's writing is just beautiful without being overly sentimental and the story both highlights the lives of young carers and portrays grief in a very realistic and poignant way. I'm not ashamed to say I cried buckets and Lemons is a book I will definitely reread - I can give no greater compliment than this, I rarely read a book more than once as my tbr list is far too long! The story , although achingly sad, is hopeful too , there are no easy answers for Calypso and her dad but things do start to improve by the end of the book. I loved it, last year I spent the year recommending Sarah Crossan's One to anyone that would listen, this year I won't be shutting up about A Library of Lemons - it is simply wonderful.

Ein Buch, das sich anfühlt wie eine warme Decke und eine heiße, tröstliche Tasse Tee. Es geht um Freundschaft und Fantasie und wie einem beides helfen kann, schwere Zeiten zu überstehen. Wiedermal eine exzellente, treffsichere Wahl vom Königskinder-Verlag - ich hoffe, dass noch mehr Bücher der Autorin auf deutsch übersetzt werden!

A beautiful book about the mistaken routes we take to cope with grief and the long-term harm they do. Lovely, lucid writing - I particularly liked the image of the father receiving an invitation and looking like a hamster about to be plucked from its cage. Recommended for readers aged 10+, including grown-ups.

"Dad always says you should be your own best friend. It means that you should be happy being alone, with yourself; that you shouldn't need other people to make you happy."

Calypso kehilangan ibunya semasa dia berumur 5 tahun akibat kanser. Sejak hari tu, ayahnya mengajarkan dia tentang inner strength.

Ayah Calypso mahu Calypso jadi manusia berdikari. Calypso anak tunggal, dan ayah ibunya tiada saudara-mara. Calypso membesar sendirian dengan buku. Sikap Calypso yang sering duduk sendirian dan tidak bergaul merungsingkan para guru di sekolah.

Situasi berubah apabila murid baru bernama Mae berpindah ke sekolah Calypso. Mereka menjadi sahabat baik kerana kedua-duanya sukakan buku.

Pertama kali dalam hidupnya, Calypso mempunyai kawan. Hidupnya menjadi semakin ceria dan gembira.

I don't need my own inner strength, because someone is being strong for me. It is such a relief.

Ketika Mae dan Calypso cuba menulis buku pertama, review buruk di internet membuatkan mereka berasa sedih.

Lalu ayah Calypso berkata, "Some people make themselves feel better by saying malicious things to others. I've never understood it myself. Putting down other people should not make you feel superior. It should make you ashamed."

Calypso bercerita tentang didikan ayahnya tentang inner strength.

"Inner strength is the thing you have to depend on. When you're sad or worried or lonely or something, you have to look inside yourself to find your inner strength. And you use it to wipe away the bad feelings and make yourself happy again. That's what makes you strong, you see."

Semenjak pemergian ibunya, Calypso langsung tidak dibenarkan bertanya tentang ibunya. Sehinggalah ayahnya disahkan sakit. "Maybe there's a limit. Maybe, if you lock away the sadness for too long, it all builds up. Like filling a tank. And one day the tank bursts and you have way more sadness than normal because it's all been stored away."

Akhirnya Calypso memahami mengapa ayahnya bertindak sebegitu.

"He didn't want to love me like he loved Mum, because Mum died. And when you love someone, losing them hurts so badly you almost wish you hadn't loved them in the first place."

And he took the pieces of his broken heart and locked them away, because he knew they could never be mended. And he began to turn himself into a monster. Because not only did he lock away his own heart, he taught the baby to lock away her heart too.

Akhirnya, Calypso memahami erti inner strength yang sebenar.

"I always thought inner strength was something you had to find for yourself. Now I know that the people who are the strongest are the ones who love others and let themselves be loved back."

Cerita kanak-kanak ini sangat banyak pengajarannya. Tentang erti persahabatan dan hubungan sesama manusia serta cara menghadapi rasa sakit dan kehilangan orang tersayang.

Penceritaan dalam buku ini sangat lancar dan menarik. Buku yang sesuai dibaca oleh semua lapisan masyarakat.

Mae’in annesi kumaşı bir yana bırakıp kollarını açtı ve Mae tereddüt etmeden bir adımda kendini annesinin kollarına bıraktı. Ama annesi sadece bir koluyla ona sarılmıştı. Öteki kolu benim için hala açıktı.
Ben de bir adım ilerledim ve sonra sıcak, güvenli ve güçlü bir kol beni sardı. Artık gözyaşlarım daha da hızlı akıyordu çünkü sanki bir anneyi ödünç almıştım, sadece bir anlığına. İçimde derinde bir yerde bir şey patlamış, dizlerimin bağı çözülmüştü ama Mae’in annesi beni sımsıkı tutuyordu.
Başka biri beni elimden tutup kaldırmıştı. Bu sefer tek başıma ayakta kalmak zorunda değilim. Manevi gücüme gerek yok, çünkü benim yerime başka biri güçlü duruyor.
Ne güzel bir rahatlama.

Genç Timaş yayınlarından hangi kitabı okuduysam ağladım arkadaşlar normal mi bu? Bu kitapta da yine o kadar yoğun duygular yaşadım ki beni biraz olsun anlamanız için yukarıdaki alıntı ile giriş yapmak istedim.
Calypso, annesini ve annesinin kaybı ile birlikte babasının sevgisini de kaybetmiş küçük bir kız çocuğu. Babası, annesinin ölümünü atlatamadığı için günlük hayat işlerinden elini eteğini çekmiş vaziyette. Ne yemek yapıyor ne evi toparlıyor ne de yapması gereken başka bir şeyi yapıyor. Calypso ile annesinin yasını tutamadan babasının yapması gereken ama yapmadığı işlere koşmak zorunda kalıyor. Kısacası babası ona babalık yapamıyor ama Calypso o küçücük yüreği ile babasına annelik yapmaya çalışıyor. O kadar kalbim kırıldı ki bu çocuk yaşta olgunlaşmak zorunda kalışına anlatamam Ve gerçek hayatta böyle olgunlaşmak zorunda kalan pek çok çocuk olduğunu bilmek çok ağır geldi bana. Keşke gerçek hayatta da bu tip zorluklar yaşayan çocukların hayatına Mae gibi güzel arkadaşlar girse, keşke o arkadaşların anneleri babaları da o çocuklara kol kanat germeye çalışsa... Aynı kitapta olduğu gibi. Çok ama çok güzel aşırı duygulu bir kitaptı. Kalbimi bıraktım kitapta mutlaka okuyun.❤️
