Every night at 3 AM, he visits the graveyard and speaks to someone that isn’t there.
When workaholic Eleanor receives an anonymous message that her estranged brother Dennis is dead, at first she doesn’t believe it. But when attempts to contact him fail, she puts her upcoming work project on hold and rushes to Finnick, Louisiana — the small, backward town where her brother lived. There, the locals tell her that Dennis committed suicide, although she isn’t so sure about that. Eleanor temporarily settles into Dennis’s creepy, turn-of-the-century house, intending to only stay long enough to pack his few belongings.
But that night, Eleanor spots a young boy in the cemetery behind Dennis’s house, speaking to the gravestones. When she approaches him, Eleanor’s interruption of the boy’s ritual sets off a chain reaction of horror she could have never prepared for. The footsteps downstairs, the voices, and the shadowy apparitions are only the beginning.
Dennis wasn’t alone in that house, and neither is she.
Eleanor soon learns that the boy is being oppressed by a demonic entity. What’s worse, her brother Dennis had also interfered with the boy’s nightly ritual and incurred the wrath of the evil spirit. Now Eleanor must finish what her brother started — to rescue the boy from the clutches of hell before he loses his soul forever.
But why is the demon so interested in the boy? What does it want? Eleanor discovers there are others in Finnick who know of the boy’s nightly visits to the graveyard and want them to continue. And they will do whatever it takes to stop Eleanor from ruining their carefully laid plans.
The Gravewatcher is the debut novel from supernatural horror author Rockwell Scott.
No spoilers: 4 stars for this spooky little bedtime read. Be sure to close your closet doors before you turn in and don't stay up reading past 3 a.m....
Eleanor Lawson got an anonymous call at 3:00 a.m. Someone told her that her brother Dennis had died...
She traveled to the small town of Finnick in Louisiana to find that Dennis had been living in an old house next to a cemetery...
Eleanor decided to stay in his house instead of a hotel. That night, she went upstairs to the bedroom and quickly fell asleep...
But...
At 3 a.m. she was awakened by a noise in the attic (okay, B-grade horror movie fans get ready)...
...she decided to go up the stairs to the attic and investigate...
Eleanor is about to discover that 3 a.m., the darkest hour of the night, is when "it" stalks...
And...
The attic was the worst possible place to be when it was awake...
This was a novel that very much reminded me of a B-grade horror flick. It had parts where I felt myself mentally telling the main character, "Don't go up there!". It was very atmospheric.
I removed a star because I felt the ending was too formulaic and has been done too many times. Also, there were a few loose ends. Overall, I would recommend it because I would read it again.
Predictable horror that failed to raise the hairs on my neck.
The plot was very basic and could have been better executed had the characters been fully developed but they weren't. The protagonist, Eleanor, was likeable though (she was the only one in her family to bother trying to find out how her brother had died) and this kept me reading.
There were bits in the book where I rolled my eyes like when she kept switching the lights off and on and the demon disappeared and reappeared which was a blatant copy of 'Lights Out '
Overall it wasn't as bad as some books I've read (hence the three stars) but it wasn't great either. It felt like the author had just slapped together bits from different movies and made a story from that.
"Every night at 3 AM, he visits the graveyard and speaks to someone that isn’t there." With a lead-in like this, my expectations for THE GRAVEWATCHER were high. Regrettably, reality often falls short of our expectation.
SUMMARY: Eleanor hasn't spoken with her brother Dennis in years, not since their parents' funeral. In fact she hasn't really kept in touch with any of her brothers and they're not much of a family at all anymore. But despite everything when Eleanor gets an anonymous message Dennis is dead, she has to find out if it's true even when that means going to the small, backward town where her youngest brother lived.
Finnick, Louisiana appears to be the kind of sleepy place where nothing much happens and everyone knows everyone. But when Eleanor moves into Dennis' turn-of-the-century house to pack up his belongings she finds out that there are more than a few strange things happening in Finnick. Like the young boy who shows up in the cemetery behind Dennis’s house, speaking to the gravestones. The elderly pastor, Dennis' friend who warns Eleanor about the shadowy apparition that may have had a hand in Dennis' death. Because Dennis wasn’t alone in that house, and neither is she. Somehow Eleanor must finish what her brother started — to rescue the boy from the clutches of evil before he loses his soul forever.
THOUGHTS: The most thrilling part of "THE GRAVEWATCHER" might just be its synopsis. The primary shortcoming lies in the consistent lack of follow-through by the author, Rockwell Scott. He introduces narrative threads, such as the haunting legend surrounding the murdered family that once owned Dennis' house, yet these threads fail to tie to the bigger storyline or connect with any of the characters, ultimately feeling like gratuitous additions whose sole purpose is to pad the book's length. While the plot has potential, its actual execution falls flat. The book lacks a compelling emotional core which results in an inability to truly engage the reader (or at least this particular reader). Eleanor, the boy, the sheriff, and even the pastor are all stick-thin figures, completely devoid of personality. There is so little offered in terms of character development that none of the characters are worth remembering. Likewise, the supernatural elements of the story including the entity or demon terrorizing Eleanor and friends leaves little impression or impact. THE GRAVEWATCHER is a short book that feels way too long.
OVERALL: THE GRAVEWATCHER receives a "Do Not Recommend (DNR)" rating.
Well what can I say? I have been in a Rockwell Scott marathon! I've read 3 of he's novels now in a few days and this one The Gravewatcher was so spine tingling and scary I read it in one night! Rockwell writes the most amazing horror stories and they really do make u think your hearing things yourself! So can't wait to read he's next novel. One of my top fave authors now 👍👍👍😍😍
Very good book. Anyone into ghost stories and good verse evil should really enjoy it. A couple grammar errors but nothing terrible. That kind of thing doesn't really bother me if it's a good story. And this one was. I'm about to check out some more of this authors books!
I loved that it was in a small Louisiana town with a church that actually had an attached graveyard!!! Then she actually stayed in the scarier house and met a horrific demon face to face!! Inspired horror read and I continue to recommend Rockwell Scott and his books!!
Supernatural, suspense filled, is just a few words that I would use to describe this story. The plot grabbed me from the beginning and more than a few twists kept me reading.
Not read this author before but thought I would give it a go, glad I did. Very much a page turner from start to finish. For anyone who likes suspense reads this is a good one to read

I really enjoyed this book. Although I didn’t find it scary, I did like the premise of it and found myself wanting to read every chance I got. If you’re looking for a good easy read, this book is for you.

Very good fast paced book. Riveting read with just enough supernatural and mystery. Definitely recommend and looking forward to more books from this author!!!!!
Great book! It was definitely creepy. The characters are well written and defined enough that I was invested in what would happen to them. I can’t wait to read more from this author!
I thought this book had a great storyline. I can see it being in a movie. I really liked it. But there were some problems with the grammar, words being skipped, etc.

I always enjoy Good vs Evil stories, and a female heroin made it that much better. Compassion, empathy and Faith grew in the main character throughout the book.
