The only reason I got this was I wanted to try out a new book club & this was the next book on their list. I couldn't make it to the book club so I didn't bother to finish this. It was excruciatingly boring. The actual book is over 400 pages, I can't imagine getting through all that. I know this had all sorts of wonderful reviews but, maybe I'm just too old to be told what to do.
The summary of the book was just fine. The actual content of the book is another story.
I've heard of Jordan Peterson here and there and heard he was somewhat controversial. In truth, I thought I might like his work more because of this. I started reading 12 Rules for Life, but I couldn't finish. It was SO boring. His antidotes were... well, they were kind of weird. I mean, his first one is taking lessons for our life from lobsters. No doubt acting confident can do wonders, but we literally had to go to the ocean and back to get to something so simplistic.
His antidotes were so convoluted for me.
I was still curious about the 12 rules, so ended up listening to a summary.
Here is my take from that:
Some of his ideas, I completely did not agree with, like the idea that we control our children. It's counter to some of his others ideas that we have control of our life. How can we control our children (who at some point have complete ownership of their life), but also have complete control over our lives? I also HATE the idea of control in any arena because, while it does work, I don't believe it works well. I think connection is much more important in parenting well. The whole approach to parenting was really weird and a little archaic in my opinion. His view on boys, was just sad in my opinion.
Some of his ideas that he took from Freud were as crazy as Freud (who I think is far overrated and has done as much to damage psychology as he has to promote psychology).
The way he brought religion in was quite off-putting for me.
Of all the 12 Rules for Life that could have been chosen, I didn't find the ones chosen to be particularly profound.
Maybe I would feel differently if I had read the entire book, but I'm really not seeing what the hype or draw is about with this one and kind of feel like it is the worst self-improvement book I may have ever encountered. Some of his ideas and points were even valid for me, but the way he got there was weird and long winded. Thank goodness he cut his rules down from what he originally had.
I found Mr. Peterson to be very much of the same mindset as myself, which interested me. I had hoped to gain a new insight as to how I should live my life. Based on this work, I seem to be on track. My one issue is the abundance of grammatical errors in this piece. To me, that is unforgivable as proofreading is available from many sources. I find it terribly distracting to the composition. Always.
This was an excellent book to read. I learned a lot about myself and the world around me.I would definitely recommend this book to my friends and family also to those I have conflict with. I have watch many videos of Jordan Peterson and found him very fascinating and intelligent. He is like a breath of fresh air when your drowning in a world full of chaos. Thank Sir for writing this book.
Short and to the point, advice that nothing is perfect, but we can make the best of things by just realizing that point. Improve yourself and things improve with you.
Having read the complete 12 Rules For Life I wished to review and summarize Peterson’s recommendations so when I found this Summary I immediately downloaded and read it. I plan to study the complete book again but refer to this Summary often.
