Having completed other beginner courses from other publishers, I thought this was gonna be an easy refresher, but I learned a lot more than I thought I would.

The instructor is VERY thorough and he explains every component/sound/tone of any given multi-syllable word or phrase, unlike the other Mandarin courses I’ve completed. For example, I never knew that oolong tea literally meant “black dragon” tea, so now my ears are tuned to listen for these two separate words when I previously assumed oolong was just one word to describe a tea flavor.

The instructor also used a lot of basic words and expressions that I never heard of before; thankfully the instructor explained his course based on the Southern dialect but he also gives examples how his words/phrases will sound with the Northern (Beijing) dialect. Understanding this is VERY important and that’s why it’s good to take multiple beginner Mandarin courses to hear the different dialects.

The pacing of the book is very slow and deliberate and you never feel overwhelmed, the downside however is the instructor often belabors his English explanations to the point where you feel this is a course for ESL students learning to speak Chinese.

If you’re completely tone deaf, if you have a hard time getting people to comprehend your English and if you can’t hear the difference between Mandarin and Japanese, then this course will definitely give you the knowledge and confidence to tackle the world’s second most spoken language.

I listened to the audio book while driving to work every morning. I had never learned a language using this approach. It is a painless way of learning the basics of a new language, I was very pleasantly surprised and I can now build simple sentences (mostly about food!) in Mandarin Chinese.

I've tried Rosetta Stone, Duolingo, FluentU, podcasts, notebooks... This is the best language learning I've used and also essential for something like Chinese which is completely tonal.

I've been listening to this while driving to work (helped me stay awake in the morning lol). I had some difficulties with building sentences with the vocabulary I have already learned and this helped me alot!
I really liked that there was one native speaker speaking in slower pace and another in a normal pace.

Set me up nicely for a three week trip through China. I started off at zero and ended up being able to get around, book things, order meals and make a few Chinese friends along the way. Paul delivers as usual.

I've studied Chinese with Assimil, with a university book for Italian learners by Hoepli and with a personal tutor. I finally get the tones thanks to Paul Noble. After three years. Thanks.

Super useful. He asks questions and gives you a chance to translate—basically a way of doing textbook exercises via audio.

Listened on Audible. This has taken me probably 2 percent of the way down the road of being able to speak passable Mandarin. Which may not sound like much, but it's a lot better than 0 percent.
