Deacon Keating's book affirms that the sharing of hearts is a necessary commitment in both marriage and prayer. The mingling of the love of spouse, with and in the love of God, is and has always been the foundation for a life of peace, creativity, vibrancy and sanctity. In fact, we cannot even understand what marriage is unless we look at how Christ loved His Bride, the Church, till the end (see Jn 13:1).
This little book is worth dipping into time and again. Especially for those with little to no catechetical instruction, the instructions and examples given here broaden one's understanding of prayer and exactly what it means to love one's spouse in a Christian marriage. Making Christ and prayer the center of that marriage and the basis for loving and communicating with one's spouse is shown as the clearest path to marital harmony, even when going through "rough patches." Offering a way forward from those patches, or from any point in a marriage, Deacon Keating presents a tiny jewel of a treatise on what it mean to communicate with God and with one's "other half."
Deacon Keating teaches a most beautiful way of prayer for yourself and with your spouse. I have found his work here and his talks on Discerning Hearts podcast very helpful in deepening my intimacy with God.
