There are so many books out there about “successful” dog-training techniques, methods, and schools. The amount of information can be overwhelming, and, to make it worse, it’s often contradictory.
I was fortunate to find this Great Courses program at my local library but I intend to purchase a copy for future reference and further practice sessions. It’s just that good. The program material is well laid out in 24 lessons each of which is about 30 minutes long. The 238 page paperback, which accompanies the four DVD set, is useful but what really sets this course apart from others is the instructor herself, Jean Donaldson. Her demeanor is warm, engaging and, best of all, encouraging. She wants you to succeed in training your dog and though she doesn't actually appear in your backyard to walk you through the program, you feel as though she has. Her delivery is crisp, clear, and practical.
I watched this course after my Labrador retriever (and I) had already had the benefit of about ten hours of individual one on one training with an experienced trainer, who is herself a graduate of the Academy for Dog Trainers, and we both still benefited from Ms. Donaldson’s course. I can’t recommend the program enough. Do yourself and your dog a big favor and take the course.
