Funny Kid Prank Wars (Funny Kid, Book 3) is the latest and third book in the Funny Kid book series, suitable for middle grade school students. Written and illustrated by Matt Stanton, an author I am familiar with after reviewing his Fart Monster and Me book series, which he co-authored with Tim Miller. Funny Kid Prank Wars (Funny Kid, Book 3) is the latest instalment in the Funny Kid series, which definitely induced a few laughs in our household.

Max, otherwise known as ‘funny kid’, is determined to make his classmates laugh at his antics and pranks, at any cost. When Max’s class embark on a school camping trip, he makes grand plans to humiliate Tyson, the new boy, by making him the centre of his jokes. A prank war is on between the two boys, after Max found himself at the unfortunate end of one of Tyson’s master pranks. In engaging in their prank war, Max, Tyson and their classmates grapple with mysterious lake monsters, hand shovelled makeshift toilets, a smuggled pet duck and plenty of cans of gas inducing beans. A generous serve of ingenious pranks makes this one unforgettable camping trip.

Funny Kid Prank Wars (Funny Kid, Book 3), was a read along experience with my own Mr 8, a reader who is still finding his toes and is beginning to move away from the reluctant reader status. Our family still finds it difficult to draw Mr 8 into the reading process, but slowly and surely, with the help with books that engage Mr 8, we are on the road to reading success. When I read a statement made by the author of Funny Kid Prank Wars (Funny Kid, Book 3), I had a hallelujah moment. I thought, finally someone gets Mr 8 and all the other reluctant readers out there! Matt Stanton states, ‘I created Funny Kid based on the belief that not all children say they love to read, but every kid loves to laugh’. Bless you Matt Stanton for understanding our hesitant readers and for recognising this need in your creation of Funny Kid!

Onto the mechanics of the book, Funny Kid Prank Wars is the third book in the series, but this book can easily be read in isolation to the previous two books in the series. There is a sense that Max, the main character, has a personal back story to share with the reader, along with his geeky but loveable sidekick Hugo and loyal duck companion. Funny Kid Prank Wars is perfectly suited to the demographic in which it is targeted to, around the 8-12 year age mark. The language is full of appealing toilet style humour this age group loves, but the prose is also correct for this demographic. My son did struggle with a couple of words, which I helped him with. The chapters are short and well paced. Between the text are bold illustrations, completed by the author, which I felt assisted my slower reader comprehend what was happening in this fast moving story. The illustrations are comic book style or notebook like, with interesting speech bubbles, which we enjoyed reading together.

Fun and frivolity awaits all readers that select the hilarious and slapstick adventures of Max, in his latest undertaking, Funny Kid Prank Wars. A foolproof read for children aged from 8 years and up.
