"Your motivation comes from inside yourself, and you can create that motivation. And the way you create that motivation is by having something to get yourself out of bed for in the morning." (Brian Tracy, The Science of Motivation)
Do I believe that this book is a comprehensive book on the science of motivation? No. I wouldn't say that. Do I believe that there are keys in this book for getting yourself motivated or others motivated? I do believe that. As the author, Brian Tracy, reiterates in this book: "one idea can change your life. But you never know what the idea is, so you must be continually taking in lots of new ideas, so that the right idea will come to you at the right time. It can transform your life completely." So, I would say that this book is a collection of ideas that the author has gleaned from a number of sources during his thousands of hours of study and years of experience.
There's a lot of material in this program, but some things that stood out for me were:
● Having goals that you are working toward constantly ● Taking action on those goals everyday (One profound thing I learned in program: action eliminates worry) ● Taking responsibility ● Having a long-term perspective ● Watching your self-talk ● Watching your distractions
And much more!
I think the number one thing you hear repeated over over in this program is his advice on having clear goals, written down, and having a process for reviewing them everyday. Whether that is just planning your activities for the day or taking the time to plan clear goals for every area of your life. He briefly explains the process for setting clear goals in this book or you can obtain his many other programs on goal setting, including: Goals!: How to Get Everything You Want Faster Than You Ever Thought Possible
Did you know that only three percent of the population have clear goals? It's true. It's like getting in a vehicle and not knowing where you are going. He says, "Goals give you a track to run on, goals give you a sense of direction, goals give you a feeling of clarity. Goals enable you to concentrate your energies and to focus on a single thing. Goals enable you to accomplish vastly more in a year or two than many people accomplish in five or ten years."
There's too much material in this book to go into detail here, but I believe this program is worth your time if you require some solid strategies, skills and techniques for motivating yourself to the accomplishing of your dreams!
First of all, I need to point out that this is a written version of ~9 hours conversation where a white American male baby-boomer telling us things and giving us motivation to reach our dreams by achieving our goals. It says science but it's not scientific; no foot-notes, no citation, no charts, no table, eventhough it mentioned 'according to a study' several times.
BUT, I must say that it's easy to read and packed with insights about productivity and goals achieving. The motivation stuff were quite motivating and the productivity hacks were practical. If you're into Gary Vee's social media content, you'd probably like this book :p
I think there is some good, motivational advice in this audiobook, but the whole thing is from a very American, capitalist, money is the answer to everything point of view. All the advice leans heavily towards getting a good job and working your way up. I think Brian Tracy gives many of his talks to business people. But, from a European perspective (I'm British), this seems strange. Most of us want a job that pays a good living wage, but we don't think becoming a millionaire will make us happy. What about goals that don’t earn money, or will even cost us? And, at one point, Tracy tells us successful people get up before 6am, while most poor people get up after 7am. Does Tracy not realise how many poor, minimum wage workers get up for work before 6am? Or how many don't even sleep then, because they're on night shifts? Maybe they work two jobs in the dame day? But poor people just lack motivation and a strong work ethic, it seems. OK. People can be trapped in a cycle of poverty that's hard to escape from. Tracy really seems to have a negative opinion of all working class jobs. It seems we should all quit those jobs and go and get a job in sales. Great. Not sure what we're going to do when there's no one to dig roads, build houses and work in our care homes. Perhaps Tracy should advocate for better pay for people in those essential roles, rather than look down on them. Also, Tracy doesn't seem to appreciate that being an able-bodied white man in one of the world's richest, most free countries definitely gives him an advantage in whatever he does. I listened to the end, and there are few good tips, but it's also a very frustrating listen, because Tracy seems oblivious to his own good luck in life's lottery, undervalues key workers in society, and thinks lots of money is the definition of success.
Have always enjoyed reading Brian Tracy's books. This is a good book. Brian talks a little fast and you may have to replay portions to understand him clearly. He gives good advice and great ideas for staying motivated. Some of his advice is a one-size-fits-all. But the world does not work like that. There were a few times he referenced, "a study" or "they studied this at Harvard" but no specific reference to the study. Realizing this is an audiobook, but references should clearly point back to the author or specific study. All in all, this is a good read with good advice.
This book holds a wealth of information and ideas for success. Lots of good ideas to think about. I do think there is a balance between traditional success and healthy living and I don’t know if that was always achieved by the methods discussed though it was touched on. I also don’t think success is always synonymous with income though it generally seemed to be in this book. Still lots of great ideas for reaching your goals. I took a good bit of notes.
I had to stop reading after it was clear he was disguising opinions as facts. There is little "science" in this book, despite it being in the title. There are far more superior books in terms of motivation that provide research, statistics and peer review. This comes off as a motivational speech from the author's opinions. It may be well meaning but I prefer facts to back up statements.
Reaching half of it, I was about to rate it 4 cause like yes I agree that the content didn't show much of the title at first read. It's a first for me to read a "philosophic" kind of book for Brain Tracy, I'm used to his "practical straight to the point" books. Maybe because I already read "Emotional intelligence" and "Atomic Habits" but this book has amazing views and ideas. The author may not be the best at delivering such ideas but with a second read you all see the links. Basically he talks about how internal motivation can be programmed in our inner mind and how we can change our beliefs so they can align with our goals so that motivation is automatic inside of you, following habits and new méthodes.
Motivation does not always run linearly upwards but always goes up and down to form a flexible graph. This book is your companion in the journey of achieving your life goals. This book can guide us to always be motivated, whatever our circumstances, so that the trend of our motivation is always positive and not the other way around.
Brian Tracy explained the science of motivation beautifully through simple daily life examples. those who wants to understand how motivation works , what is the need of motivation and what are the theories of motivation must read the book.
