During the summer, it's always good to dig into a big, fat book full of tips and strategies for teaching. Well, at least I think so. It's energizing to find creative, usable ideas at my fingertips. My copy of this book is now full of highlights and sticky notes.
I've been a French and Spanish teacher for over 40 years; I've been teaching ELL for about 10 years. There is much overlap. I'm glad to be reminded of what I already knew, but had filed away in the back drawers of my brain. I'm glad to learn some new techniques.
I subscribe to Larry Ferlazzo's blog. I don't always have time to read his posts, and I cannot imagine where he gets the time to write/compile them. So this book is welcome. It's well organized and written in an easy-to-understand, straightforward way for all of us teachers. I recommend it.
The book is written primarily for teachers of immigrants, in public schools, I think. My situation is a bit different: I teach international students in a private school. I teach intermediate to advanced learners, he teaches, as best as I can ascertain, mostly beginners to intermediate. Some of his work doesn't apply to me, but much of it does.
A life saver for this English teacher suddenly turned ELL teacher! And probably a good reminder to even experienced ELL teachers of the wide range of strategies available to us (who doesn't get stuck in a rut?). 45 chapters, each naming a particular strategy, and each full of many specific examples of using that strategy, ways to adapt is to higher and lower levels, and many pdfs and online links included.
I LOVE this resource! This is sure to be a must have for teachers planning lessons for ELLs and all students. The format, layout, and structure of this book make it very easy to read. Plus, it’s loaded with literally 100s of strategies and lessons. I can’t wait to share this book with ESL teachers in my district!
This book lives up to it's subtitle - there are easy, practical, challenging, thought-provoking learning strategies by the hundreds in this book. My students and I both benefited from my reading this book and trying out new activities. Looking forward to using even more during the next school year.
Ridiculously expensive ($23 USD for the Kindle version) and not worth it, in my opinion. Some decent ideas, just not a lot for teaching total beginners, which is the situation I find myself in. Overall, disappointing and there are much better books out there (anything by Jeremy Harmer or Scott Thornbury, for example).
This was more useful for me, both in completing my ELL certification coursework and in general. It goes through more specific, concrete ideas and strategies for students and was easier to read and access. I can see myself referencing this over the years as I work with more diverse students. Would recommend for anyone who works with ELL students, as it’s east to implement.
