The long-awaited third book in the Children of the Mountain series.
Gabriel and Mags return to the Juvies after escaping The Greenbrier. But something is happening to Mags now, changes that Gabriel can’t explain. And to save her he must make a decision that will affect them all.
R.A. Hakok discovered writing while recovering from a lengthy legal career. His first novel, the techno-thriller Viable, was followed by Among Wolves, a chilling tale about a small group of schoolchildren who find themselves living inside a mountain after the world outside ends. The second and third books in the Children of the Mountain series are now available, and he is currently hard at work on the fourth. For more information and to download the free companion ebooks to the series please visit www.rahakok.com. While there you could swing by the contact page and say hi. R.A. Hakok loves getting emails from readers, and responds to all of them personally, and hardly ever in the third person.
Gabriel continues his ongoing quest to prove that he is, indeed, not as smart as he thinks he is when he finds himself the reluctant leader of his little tribe of adult children and then immediately fucks everything up.
I was allowed to read this early and am now reading it again. This book is 3rd in a series. At the end we are given a recap of the first two books. Gabe is now 17 years old and has been going out scavenging for a couple years. He and his first grade class have lived inside a government bunker located in a mountain. They have been there for 10 years. Most of them hadn’t been outside since Last Day. A virus was set loose and their class had been on a tour of the White House on that day. Their teacher and the 30 children had been brought by helicopters to the bunker. They were told the bunker under the mountain’s name was Eden. The virus attacked metal and also changed humans into what they called furies. The weather was affected as well and it is always cold with snow on the ground. Their food consists of mostly MREs or powdered eggs and such. In the second book Gabe gets the kids ‘they refer to them as juvies’ out of Eden and away from the tyranny of President Kane. They move to a second bunker known as Mount Weather. You can read this book without having read the first two but you should read them, they are really good. In this third book, the bad guys show up again and Gabe and his friends vote to leave and go to a third bunker known as Fearington. Gabe does not know anything about this third place. He has a map with the 12 position alphanumeric codes for all the bunkers. Gabe is friendly with Mags who he has known since before first grade. They were both in Sacred Heart Home for children together. I don’t want to tell too much of the stories. But I really loved all three books.
"Lightning Child" was a definite improvement on part 2 of the trilogy, which will no longer be a trilogy since the author is writing the next book in the series.
There was much more action and more happening in this book, with interesting new characters introduced along the way. Still a lot of plodding through snow though! I was pleased that some loose ends were tied up, such as what the virus was originally intended for. Also pleased that some of the baddies got their just desserts. As with the other books, the main character made some really unwise decisions but I had to remind myself that he was only 17 and living in a world with constant peril.
This series becomes more surprising as the story develops. It makes you think Bout the best and the worst in humans. We have the mental capacity to create an amazing world but we too often allow our desire for power and wealth to misuse our gifts. Mags tries no matter what is done to her to hold on to empath and compassion. Finch is the great pretender. The president is everything sleazy in the human heart. The reader needs to honestly assess him/herself while reading this series. What do you want to make the world? Who do you want to be when the end comes?
Its been awhile, but it's awesome to be back in the company of Gabe, Mags, & Johny.
Hakok continues to give us an amazing level of hope in one of the most dour & unforgiving post-apocalyptic worlds ever written. The world seemed lost in book one, but slowly, evolving, the story begins to reveal that so are the people in the book -- some for the better, some for the worse.
Seeing Gabe's transition was something not entirely unexpected, but the way it happened was perfect.
I know there'll be a wait, but I am so ready for book four... And five... And...
This was not a “normal” read for me but I must say that the series was written so well that it kept me reading through all three books. I would say that the vision here is very dark but he character development overshadowed the stark nature of the world described and kept me reading. I honestly wanted to find out what happened to the characters despite the “doomed “ feel of the situation.
With that said, I would recommend this series and the author and will look forward to seeing his development as a writer in the years to come.
I have checked regularly for this book to be published , and now will do the same for the next one ! I love reading , and have had a book in my hand almost all my life . I can honestly say that this series of books I rate highly . Fast paced ,gripping and at times poignant . It's very late for me , but I had to keep reading ,( then wished I hadnt as I just wanted this book to keep going ! Next book ASAP please ! Or better still WHEN IS THE FILM HAPPENING ? ! Great author 😊😊😊
I have been unable to put this book down since I started reading it. The characters that you have grown to like, and some you hate, continue to evolve and grow. I ultimately have to give the author a round of encouragement and can’t wait for the next book. If your looking for a unique story that will keep you burning through pages. Pick this series up. J.L. Perrigo author of Good Intentions
The world has essentially ended but for a few survivors and the Infected. The struggle for survival is real though and Gabe is determined to protect those for whom he cares. Even if some of them don’t care much for him.
Join Gabe and his pack as they search an Artic-cold landscape for a safe haven and fight against those who would do them harm.
I'm reading this series a second time and enjoying it. The first book dragged me in and I looked forward to every book after that. I don't know how I missed leaving a review the first time I read this. Life probably got in the way. What's happening to Mags? What will Gabe find? New characters are introduced. Twists will keep you reading to the end. You have to know what's going to happen next.
I've read books 1, 2, and 3, and I'm about to begin the fourth book.
The story is gripping, and the characters are great. I've enjoyed reading this series.
What could be better is if the author had someone proofread his work first. There were plenty of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. More liberal usage of commas would make certain parts easier to understand, as without some of the commas the meanings were ambiguous until I mentally added one.
Well well well… I’m still reading this series and it just took a major turn. Got super interesting. Grammatical errors are still rich but you learn to glaze over them. It’s kinda like that lame TV series you keep watching but you don’t tell anyone about because you hands to get so far into the series before it gets good. That’s this series. Idk if it’s good or if I’m suffering from book Stockholm syndrome. Is that a thing? It is with me
This series has all the action of the Purge and elements of the Passage trilogy. It is meant for young adults but I am a grandmother but I binge read the trilogy. I hope this is not all of it because if other readers are like me they will fall in love with the main characters.
Best so far!! One of the best books I've read in a long time (and I've read some excellent books lately)! The story was constantly blowing my mind and I never knew what was coming. I love the dual perspectives. I'm starting the next one now and recommending this series to everyone I know.
I love this series! It continues to intrigue me with what might happen next. In this case, there were some twists I never saw coming and some new characters that were a welcome addition. Highly recommended! I can't wait for the next book!
This one is not up to par with the first two. Although some questions are answered there is far too much time wandering around going from one place to the other. I am hoping book four will be back to the quality of one and two.
I enjoyed them so much, I read all 3 in 4 days. And several long nights. You really come to care about the characters. Not your typical apocalyptic book. Can't wait for the next one! P Turner
Loved this as much as the first two books. Really couldn't put it down. Sometimes a story can be really predictable, I didn't think this was at all and kept my interest, can't wait to read the next installment.
Just sucked in with this story, the characters a little slim, but once I start reading I can't put it down and no disappointments yet. Getting harder for the follow ups,I guess?
