With tons of extras, this deluxe hardcover edition collects #1-12 of the critically-acclaimed series by two-time Eisner Award-winner Zander Cannon.
Do you like Godzilla movies and other movie monsters (Gamera, Mothra, etc)? Did you deep dive into HBO's OZ when it was a thing?
Boy do we have a comic for you! What if movie monsters were locked up and kept watch over by a bunch of Ultraman types? (cooler than it sounds, I swear). It's written 'seasonally', so six issues per season. The writer, Zander Cannon, has a lot of love for monster movies and their history. It shows in all the detail work on the panels.
Bonus: Yo, my Zilla! Non-euclidian geometry will get you far. (literally) Bonus Bonus: An Ultraman with severe PTSD and a robot girlfriend? I'm in. ----------- This collection is a deluxe collection of issues #1-12 (so basically Seasons 1+2), plus there's a bit on the history of monster films, original character designs, original studio pitch for the series, and all the variant cover art.
I was reluctant to read this initially because I find prison drama to be extremely harrowing. This was deeply upsetting, but in a really compelling way that absolutely made me want to keep reading. While a lot of the racism metaphors don't quite work, there's so many clever ideas in here and such a thrilling story that I'm able to look past that. This edition, with its running commentary, makes the in-jokes even better.
This is a fun read for any fans of Kaiju movies and prison dramas. I love the commentary on each page that calls out how packed full of references the story is. The art is fun and colorful with some monsters that you will love and hate. There are a ton of extras included with this hardcover.
I loved this crazy Godzilla-meets-Oz mashup so much, and the Deluxe Edition, with minimal and efficient page-by-page liner notes to explain all the kaiju references that I didn't get, was the perfect way to appreciate it fully.
