Wardolly

Rate this book
Poetry. "the posture of the little hero is self-explanatory." In her seventh book, WARDOLLY, Oakland poet Elizabeth Treadwell traces currencies of war and home-shore, in the micro and the mac. "This is a feminine poetry, marvelous, tough, and unrelenting"--Maureen Thorson. "If you want a feminist invention that is at once comic and confident, melodic and bizarre, affectionate and committed to its principles--then Treadwell is the next poet for you"--Stephen Burt. "Elizabeth Treadwell's writing, in which human figures appear amidst fantastically embroidered surfaces, demonstrates volubility, humor, and intelligence in spades"--Joyelle McSweeney. Treadwell is the former director of the Small Press Traffic Literary Arts Center at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco and currently edits two online poetry magazines, Delirious Hem and Thimble. BIRDS & FANCIES, LILYFOIL + 3, CHANTRY, and others are available from SPD.

This is a beautiful book. This is not so much of a review as it is praise. As with each of Elizabeth's books there is a strong voice which carries the book thru. In this book she seems to be taking some risks in way of experiment/ poem creation...borrowing words, erasing words, addressing issues of the time, but in a smart and sometimes snarky way (snarky funny), I will add one of my favorites as an example...

A Thousand Virgins Shout Fuck Off

to the indie filmmakers carving youth’s particulars with their gnarly todds even/

while portraying the multitudes as merely disgusting protrusions of existence &/

commerce, even as their own onionskins over their hypnotic guts.
in heaven, a thousand wallflowers shout fuck off across the dance floor, in heaven,/
why

because gwyneth paltrow is not that great, and neither is uma thurman
are you writing your name?

a thousand virgins shout fuck off to the men of religion
to the men and women of god
