Larger-than-life and laugh-out-loud funny. Jean Echenoz stereotypes the stereotypes and out-clichés the clichés in this light hearted romp of blondes, drugs, sex and murder... oh, and did I mention Blondes???

Third novel I've read by this French writer, and it's a bit of a wild and raucous romp that goes from Paris to Australia to Bombay to Normandy. A documentary film maker, wanting to make a piece on famous blondes, sends an inept group of detectives - that's the second book in a week I've read where the detectives are somewhat inept - to track down the former pop star Gloire Stella. A fugitive on the run, with a semi-imaginary homunculus, she likes shoving men off cliffs and attacking with a hachet - luckliy, for the latest guy who finds her before she travels to the other side of the world, the windshield of his car saves him. It's bunkum, it's Raymond Queneau-esque for its surreal amusements, it's a comic noir and a kind satire on celebrity culture; on the private and public image, that won't live long in the memory, but was fun to read at the time.

Πέμπτο βιβλίο του Ζαν Εσνόζ που διαβάζω και δηλώνω για ακόμα μια φορά ικανοποιημένος, αλλά και συνάμα μαγεμένος από τη γραφή και τον τρόπο που ο συγγραφέας αφηγείται μια σχετικά απλή και όχι ιδιαίτερα συναρπαστική ιστορία. Η πλοκή του βιβλίου δεν με ξετρέλανε κιόλας, αλλά η όλη αφήγηση του Εσνόζ κατάφερε να με καθηλώσει και να με κάνει να διαβάσω το βιβλίο σχεδόν απνευστί, σαν να ήταν κάποιο μπεστ σέλερ θρίλερ. Η γραφή είναι πολύ έξυπνη, σε σημεία παιχνιδιάρικη, με ωραίο χιούμορ και σατιρική διάθεση, θα έλεγα ότι είναι ικανή να κάνει και την πιο τετριμμένη ιστορία να μοιάζει με κάτι το πρωτότυπο και το μοναδικό. Η ατμόσφαιρα του βιβλίου είναι πολύ ωραία, πότε ευχάριστη και πότε πιο σκοτεινή, σε σημεία μάλιστα τείνει και λίγο προς το νουάρ. Γενικά πρόκειται για ένα ακόμα ωραίο, ενδιαφέρον και ιδιαίτερο βιβλίο δια χειρός Εσνόζ, τον οποίο έχω αρχίσει να συμπαθώ πολύ σαν συγγραφέα, έστω και αν δεν έχω βάλει πέντε αστεράκια σε κάποιο βιβλίο του (έφτασα πολύ κοντά με το "14", πάντως).

Maître de l'action dans l'action, Échenoz manipule la plume comme un scénariste. Chaque scène se construit comme faite pour être tournée en caméra car la visualité du récit nous renvois à une succession de plans copieux en humour, ironie et sagacité. Plus, comme un metteur en scène qui invite ses spectateurs sur la planche, Échenoz interpelle son lecteur et l'inclu dans son jeux, l'invite directement à regarder et lui anticipe ses opinions, ses craintes, ses préjugés tout comme ses fantasmes. Ou en autres mots, un livre Indispensable.

Echenoz kendini herzaman okutuyor. Ama hiç okumadıysanız bu kitabından başlamayın. Zaten piyasada da yok şu an, ben bir sahafta bulmuştum. Biraz macera, biraz popüler kültür, biraz şiddet, biraz cinsellik, bunların ötesinde herzamanki gibi insanı içine çeken, basit gibi görünen ama çok zekice Echenoz üslubu.

Προσπαθεί να συγκεντρωθεί στην πλοκή , αλλά μάταια: χωρίς τίποτα να μπορεί να τις συγκρατήσει, οι εικόνες τη διαπερνούν σαν ακτίνες Χ, σαν ένας ηλεκτρονικός αέρας αδιαφοροποίητος, μονόχρωμος και λείος, χλιαρός και υπόκωφος. Η Γκλουάρ βρίσκει τη δύναμη να κλείσει τη συσκευή πριν τη χαύνωση..

Oh, ça va. J'ai beaucoup aimé en fait d'autres ouvrages de Jean Echenoz - son roman du prix Goncourt - Je m'en vais (que j'adore) et celui du prix Médicis - Cherokee que j'ai beaucoup aimé. Le style de l'intrigue mystère m'a beaucoup plu. De plus, les ouvrages biographiques comme Au piano et Ravel étaient aussi bien intéressants et provocateurs dans leur style d'écriture et leur sujet. Je n'attendais pas trop de Les Grandes Blondes et malheureusement c'est ce que j'ai reçu. Un langage bien effleuri dans le style d'Echenoz, toujours amusant, imaginatif, et surtout divertissant pour son imagination. Tout cela mélangé avec un ouvrage qui me semble mimer les clichés les plus adorables dans tous les médias nous offrent un romain qui plaît, qui ne choque pas, et qui me semble ne le cherche pas. Dans un mot - sympa. Je vous le conseille si vous êtes fana d'Echenoz et sinon, pourquoi pas? Vas-y!

Grabbed this randomly at the library. Pretty disappointed, characters didn’t really stick out to me and often were very undistinguishable from eachother. Couldn’t really tell what the whole point of the plot was or where it was even going. Humor was bland. Nothing about this will stay with me.

Ce livre ne m’a laissé vraiment aucun souvenir, à part celui de m’ennuyer pendant ma lecture
Quelques passages vaguement drôles, et un début de réflexion sur le star système et le droit à la tranquillité mais globalement une suite de péripéties sans queue ni tête et un langage biscornu pour forcer sur l’absurde mais ça donne plus un livre pour boomers qu’autre chose

Dans son sixième roman Echenoz est très proche à Cesar Aira, l’écrivain argentin qui plus ou moins improvise tout ses romans sans préméditer les récits et personnages. Une méthode qui résulte dans livres comiques et aléatoires qui constamment laissent tomber des idées à peine développées et suivent des fils du recit apparemment tout insignifiantes.
Mais Echenoz est un écrivain très discipliné et tout le hasard et la banalité absurde dans Grandes Blondes est fixé dans une structure très solide et une langue précise et sérieuse, presque classique. L’effet est un roman merveilleux qui achève un abstraction concrète, rien dans ce texte est importante en tant que tel et tous les évènements et drôles intrigues constitue une sorte de tableau pop-art glissant.

Είχε περάσει αρκετός καιρός να διαβάσω ένα βιβλίο και να μου προκαλέσει τέτοιο εκνευρισμό. Δεν θα σταθώ στην υπόθεση γιατί είναι το λιγότερο σε αυτό το βιβλίο, το οποίο εν τέλει δεν μπορεί να κερδίσει το ενδιαφέρον σε κανένα σημείο. Η γραφή είναι επίπεδη και αδιάφορη, ο συγγραφέας μοιάζει σαν να αράδιασε τις λέξεις και ό,τι βγει. Ο αναγνώστης καλείται να αγνοήσει το γεγονός ότι η ιστορία είναι ασύνδετη, χαώδης, οι χαρακτήρες στατικοί, σαν καρικατούρες και να συνεχίσει το διάβασμα, ελπίζοντας ότι κάτι μπορεί να αλλάξει στην διαδρομή. Πραγματικά δεν αξίζει τον κόπο η αναμονή, όπως είναι οι πρώτες σελίδες, έτσι και συνεχίζει.

היה חמוד מאד לדעתי!!!
אמנם לא מצחיק בטירוף כמו שכתוב בביקורות אבל אולי הבעיה בחוש ההומור שלי או בתרגום מצרפתית.
וגם מה העניין עם הבחור הקטן הזה בליאר? אני לא יודעת מה המשמעות של זה אבל גם אני רוצה בחור קטן שיושב לי על הכתף ומייעץ לי.
האורך הקצר של הספר מרגיש לי קצת מוזר ולדעתי היה אפשר להרחיב כי הייתי רוצה להתעמק בו יותר, אבל זה גם הפך אותו לקליל יותר כי זה כזה סיפורון.
וגם, אהבתי את התיאורים של הדברים, הם גרמו לספר להרגיש מאד ויזואלי ותחושתי, ממש כמו סרט.

Dit was mijn tweede Echenoz-boek in korte tijd, en enkele jaren geleden had ik ook al een aantal andere gelezen (Meer, Ravel en Ik ben weg). Ik hou wel van zijn boeken: bedrieglijk licht en laconiek, ironisch en grappig, wars van grote woorden en gevoelens, wars ook van diepzinnigheid en pyschologische duiding, en TOCH gaat het steeds om de leegte van alles en het menselijk tekort. Hoe Echenoz dat soort zware zaken zo licht kan beschrijven weet ik niet, maar hij kan het.

Ook in dit boekje flikt Echenoz het weer. Het lijkt op het eerste gezicht gewoon een thriller: blonde ex-filmster met duistere geheimen is op de vlucht voor een door blondines geobsedeerde TV-producer en diverse speurders, en al vluchtend komt ze in aanraking met allerlei dubbelagenten en duistere syndicaten. Maar al snel merk je dat dit boek alle bekende thriller-elementen parodieert. De speurders bijvoorbeeld tasten in het duister: als ze haar al vinden, dan is dat toeval en hebben ze niet eens in de gaten dat zij het is. Alle 'sporen' die speurders geacht worden te vinden zijn bij Echenoz doodlopend. En waar speurneuzen normaal hard boiled manskerels zijn, daar zijn het bij Echenoz treurige mannen die droevig kijken in de spiegel, weinig succes hebben bij vrouwen, en vol angst zijn voor duizeling en leegte. Zo ook de geobsedeerde TV-producer: angstig voor de (al dan niet ingebeelde) val in de afgrond, vol verlangen naar 'de blondine' als een nauwelijks te begrijpen incarnatie van 'het hogere', en vergeefs dromend van een TV-programma waarin hij het raadsel van 'de blondine' ontraadselt. Erg tragi-komisch, die producer.

Echenoz bezorgt je als lezer voortdurend een lichte duizeling en een glimlach. Je leest een thriller die steeds vraagtekens bij het thrillergenre plaatst, een soort anti-thriller waarin iedereen volkomen op de dool is. Bovendien raak je ook als lezer geregeld het houvast kwijt, omdat de plot steeds net even anders gaat dan je bij 'normale' thrillers gewend bent. Dat is vermakelijk en grappig, en tegelijk verontrustend. Het is bijvoorbeeld grappig hoe allerlei speurders hopeloos falen bij het kraken van een cijfercode, of hoe ze een cijfercode gewoon totaal vergeten. En tegelijk maakt Echenoz daar op onnavolgbare wijze een soort metafoor van het menselijk tekort van: het niet kunnen kraken of onthouden van een code als metafoor voor het niet kunnen begrijpen van het bestaan. Maar waar 'het menselijk tekort' normaal nogal zwaarwichtig is en met grote woorden gepaard gaat, blijft het bij Echenoz vederlicht. Steeds schrijft hij over leegte, mislukking en zinloosheid, en toch blijft hij grappig en luchtig. Overigens zijn er veel mensen die Echenoz te licht vinden, en denken dat zijn boeken geen substantie of inhoud hebben. Ach, smaken verschillen: ik amuseer mij prima met hem, en ik hoop nog veel van hem te lezen.

refashioning the detective narrative into something more art-y evidently is such a tempting strategy perhaps it's a trap. note the murder puzzles of echenoz's house-mate at les editions de minuit, robbe-grillet. or robert coover's recent deconstruction of noir or pynchon's neon vices or lethem's genre mashups or haruki murakami's career-long channeling of chandler... even bolaño wants to be a homicide cop in his next life... that ongoing and probably easily extended list suggests there's not only something fashionable about this trope-slumming but that the mystery narrative is somehow deeply fundamental to the novel form. its searcher protagonists and elusive, ineffable obscure objects of desire might arguably be the nucleobases of the novel's DNA.

reading three echenoz in a row -- BIG BLONDES, I AM GONE, and CHEROKEE -- made that thought pop again to mind as echenoz displays an intimate and scientific knowledge of the genre's workings. he also does something that feels unique with it, stripping almost everything out -- certainly as much interiority as he can -- and leaving only plot. not that these are zippy momentum-gathering page turners -- rather they're drôle collages of event where a thousand peculiar items are glued together with comedic and/or convenient coincidence. cubist mysteries of fractured planes, they're fun reads with, when the pieces come together at the end, an almost guaranteed mild let-down (maybe even a purposeful, subversive one). oddly addictive.

Η γνωριμία με τον Echenoz ξεκινησε από ενα μαγικο βιβλιο ("Στο καλό μυθιστόρημα")..καπου ζηλεψα για για ολους αυτους τους συγγραφεις που αγνοούσα ή τελος παντων δεν τους ειχα διαβασει...αναμεσα τους και ο Echenoz...Ειπα οτι καποτε θα ερθει η ωρα του και ως δια μαγειας ενας φιλος μου το προσφερε τουτο το βιβλιο τις γιορτες. Οταν ανοιξεις το εξωφυλλο να δεις πως ειναι τελος παντων αυτος ο συγγραφεας θα πεσεις πανω σε ενα προσωπο που θα σε γοητευσει με την πρωτη ματια..Οι σελιδες που ακολουθησαν με κερδισαν! Ευφυης, χιουμοριστας, γνωστης του παιχνιδιου αναγνωστη-συγγραφεα σε βαζει απο την αρχη στο παιχνιδι...Η μεταφραση ειναι εξαιρετικη! Το θεμα..του βιβλιου οχι δυσκολο να το μαντεψεις...Οι ξανθιες..για την ακριβεια η εμμονη μας με τις ξανθες ολων των εποχων και ολων των αποχρώσεων...του σινεμα, της γειτονιας, του δρομου...Η εισαφωγη μου στο συμπαν του Echenoz δεν μπορουσε να ξεκινησει με πιο ομορφο και σαγητευτικο τροπο!

This satiric upper cut to the solar plexus of popular culture is both dead-on, as well as entertaining. The producers of a television program are putting together a documentary on Blondes, and Echenoz skewers them with the precision of a surgeon’s scalpel. “So along side warm blondes, there also exist cool tall blondes with measured words, radiographic eyes, and strict tailored suits. They are perhaps more distinguished, more civilized than the warm tall blondes, but the world, for opposite reasons, fears them just the same. At best, lunar, they stiffen in its arms; at worst they evaporate out of them. They run the risk of transparency, expose themselves to the danger of chlorosis. They are seldom light-hearted. Eva Marie-Saint is fairly typical of the genre. There is also a bit of this with Ingrid Bergman, for example.”
