It may seem silly to be reading all the volumes after having watched the entire first season of the anime already, but I really like the impact the manga format has. The surprises that you may have encountered watching the material felt even more shocking on the page. Certain characters were also more menacing to me, and the themes of racism, violence, and sense of self-worth sink in more as I read it, rather than as I watch it. I’m really glad I’ve decided to engage the series in both formats.

Intense! Dark!
Wow, Haru's personality grows more impressive with every issue.
And poor Legoshi, that was quite a beating, on top of the emotional trauma.

This volume touched my heart. The story exceeded all of my expectations. And this artwork has started to grow on me. Definitely the best volume in Beastars series so far!

Even in a series that is bizarre in concept and odd in tone, I need events to make sense, and the unlikely confrontation with a crime syndicate that has kidnapped Haru the rabbit just kills my suspension of disbelief.

So far a compelling series with a focus on character. A few missteps, in my opinion prevent it from reaching its full potential. The art is a bit rougher than most mainstream manga, but the fast-paced storytelling works. It bypasses some of the cliches present in high school manga while falling into other pratfalls. The drama club is the stage for an aggressive display of dominance and timidity in various forms: sexual, school status, physical strength, immaturity, social circles, etc. Power dynamics are at play between Legoshi and his tiger and deer rival finally make way for more world building with the black market and illegal smugglers. The dark underbelly of an all-animal society is not different enough from our own to feel completely original. Still, it captures my interest on the character level. The reactions are only believable because they're animals, but many of their traits are underutilized in their conformist society. I hope the series branches out beyond the high school setting, but have my doubts.

There is something about the characters that I just can't get out of my head. I can't wait to reach for the next volume every time. This one in particular had some big Aha! moments of character growth for Legoshi (wolf), Haru (rabbit), and Louis (red deer). They are going through their hero's journey (or anti-her0 if you know who I mean) and stepping into their forms power which so far seem to align with both their species and gender. So far the gender roles fit into masculine and feminine archetypes, and we meet new species each episode So I'm looking forward to variety.

There are some moments where the transitions feel a little like a "jump" or a character appears out of context however I never let that deter me from just *being* with the characters. The artist draws especially careful and nuanced eyes and face lines to demonstrate the inner world of relatable and damaged characters so feel with them. *in love*

This one was a 5/5 for me. The way the character arcs were tied up was very satisfying.

edit: Just want to add: for mature audiences only for sex and violence.

Beastars Vol. 5
5/5 stars

Every time I pick up a new volume I get overwhelmed with how much I love this series and specifically how much I love Legoshi. This adorable little dork was like “lol guess imma just die cause I’m deadass gonna waltz up into the mobs den with no plan because they have my love.” like there are no other options for this man.

The headquarters for the Shishi-Gumi was so eerie and haunting with the dead bodies hanging
I love seeing the scenes where we go back to the academy and see all of Legoshis friends discussing him and coming to the realization that he is in love with Haru
Gohin is a fantastic character -smash- I loved his introduction in the last volume and seeing him buddy up with Legoshi in this one after saying “You’re willing to risk your life for a chance to confess your love! I can’t turn a blind eye to that” made me fully love him in this one
Seeing Haru write her final words was heartbreaking. Seeing that she was doing this in her head while being assaulted as a way to mentally escape her current situation was SO fucking haunting and sad. And then her going through all her past lovers and delving into how she is promiscuous as a way to feel strong and like she had something to offer and then BAM, Legoshis face pops up and my fucking heart hurts
Legoshi smelling Harus scent on the Lion and realizing that this man touched her and then kicking ass! …waterfall
My Lungs Are Filled With Your Scent More Than My Heart Is Filled With Emotion sounds like the name of a Fall Out Boy song and fills me with so much angst
Also “My body burns with knowledge of you” … my boy. Your inner monologue is making me fall in love WAY to hard
Jack is precious and him being upset when he realizes that Rhino is dead cause it’ll upset Legoshi (cause of course that soft fool rescues bugs) was too pure
“I’m beginning to understand Jack.. the reason I was born a wolf…” then he fucking looks at Haru and thinks “These claws exist for you… these fangs exist for you… I will become your beast” like why are my nipples hard!? This fucking wolf dude.
I loved the plot twist of Louis coming to kill the lion, but also wtf is he dead?? I doubt it, right?
Haru just staring at Legoshi with heart eyes and awe while he’s stuffing his face with noodles is such a mood. They are so cute. I liked seeing them interact outside of school in this awkward close way now after everything
Okay, I know it’s super niche but I have a phobia of escalators and Legoshis nightmare sequence where he’s stuck on one that is endless was awful
And the WTF you can’t just leave this on a cliffhanger like that
This felt like the season finale of a show so much happened. I feel like every volume I’ve read has topped the last one and holy shit I love the experience of finding a piece of media that I love as much as this one.

Louis putting that gun in the Shishigumi leader’s mouth is just as cold in the manga as it was in the anime. Incredible scene tbh

Definitely my favourite of all the volumes so far. It was dark yet suspenseful. It was romantic, and had some fantastic twists and turns which constantly kept me on the edge of my seat. This cover is one of my favourites too. Also... THAT ENDING ?!?! I’m waiting on bated breath for volume 6...

This volume alone proves that this is one of the greatest manga series of all time.

The intensity, the emotion, the high stakes, the characterisation, EVERYTHING - There is TRULY nothing that can compare to it in my experience of reading manga.

This volume is perfect.

At a high school where the students are literally divided into predators and prey, it’s personal relationships that maintain the fragile peace. Who among them is a Beastar—an academic and social role model destined to become a leader in a society naturally rife with mistrust? Is it Legoshi, the scary looking but soft hearted wolf? And what is up with this murder?!

Legoshi is on a mission to do something about what happened to Haru. It was fascinating to see how Louis played into the political aspect of the situation. And later how he took things into his own hands. Legoshi impresses me with how hard he works to stay true to himself. If he realizes something doesn’t jive then he tries to work out what it is and then fix it. And he tries to do just that in the end with Haru!

Haru’s promiscuity is explained here. It’s pretty sad but also understandable too. Power is not delivered equally and women’s talents many times are used to level the playing field. The art was pretty clear on the relationship between women, sex and prey animals. The imagery wasn’t pretty but hit home.

Gohin, the panda, is winning me over slowly after that shocking first meeting with Legoshi. He has some great points in this volume. As a threshold guardian I find him brutal and hard hitting, much like any truth is.

Beastars is a shockingly good series. Legoshi, Louis and Haru all have their own struggles in the animal world and it parallels our own in meaningful ways.

This volume was simply epic. So full of thrills and action, you wouldn't believe it... but while still keeping intact that Beastars' essence that we have learn to love so quickly (after all, this is just volume 5!).

Legoshi and Haru are stellar in this one, and Louis' appearance might be brief, but sure was intense.

I heard next issue is a bit of an innuendo after this one, but that is hardly surprising, and I sure am happy there's still so many volumes of this manga series to enjoy.

this is, well... weird and not always in a good way,I am going to finish this however, which means Itagaki managed to create sth different even though sometimes very flat. I can't really say my final opinion but there are elements in this manga that just take away from the genius of it and turn it mediocre.

A surprisingly suspenseful volume as Haru is kidnapped by dangerous and murderous lions involved in the black market, and Legoshi is determined to save her and make her his. He gets help from panda doctor Gohin and it’s a fierce confrontation while he embraces his inner beast. We get a glimpse of his past as he and Haru spend the night together. A (100%/Outstanding)
