Despite what Goodreads says, this book is NOT 400 pages long... but it should have been. It’s 186 pages of interesting, analytical, passionate, and intelligent essays about out favorite author. I really wish it was longer, but it is a wonderful edition from Cemetery Dance, and a must have for any King fan.

Reading Stephen King is another wonderful title from Cemetery Dance.
Introduction to Knowing Darkness: Artists Inspired by Stephen King, is an interesting and timely (Bernie Wrightson, artist of The Stand Uncut Edition and others, passed away this year) essay by Frank Darabont. Darabont, like many others in this collection, tells a story of how he discovered King when Darabont was a senior in high school. Darabont read The Shining in high school because of the artwork on the cover. I will forever be grateful to Dave Christensen. He was the artist who made the cover for The Shining. He's the reason that Darabont opened and read The Shining. To think we may not have movies like The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, or The Mist if Dave Christensen hadn't made an interesting cover, is incredibly awesome but scary at the same time.

I'll admit that Kings Desperation was one of my least favorite King novels. The writing, like always, is great, but I know little to nothing about Christianity so the fact that Desperation was based so much around the Christian God, was a turn off for me. Billy Chizmar's The Role of Religion in Stephen King's Desperation is one of the best essays in this collection. His in depth analysis has given me a new understanding and interest in this story. With the knowledge Chizmar so eloquently drops, I am currently rereading Desperation under a new light that is making it so much more enjoyable.

I would recommend this collection to any King fan, or even someone who has read King and not loved him. These essays may give you a new respect for the King.

Донякъде се дължи на онова, което ораторите наричат "етос: усещането за достоверност, което един автор има в очите на своите читатели. Знаем какво да очакваме, когато започваме да четем нещо ново от Стивън Кинг, тоест може да не знаем за какво ще се разказва, но сме почти сигурни, че ще му се насладим, нали?
Обаче става дума и за подбора на думи и достъпността им, иначе казано, за лекотата на употреба. Романи като "Махалото на Фуко" от Умберто Еко, "Война и мир" от Толстой, "Моби Дик" от Мелвил, "Врява и безумство" от Фокнър и, разбира се, "Бдение над Финеган от Джеймс Джойс, макар и прославени (и с право) и страхотни литературни произведения (каквито са; не отричам достойнствата им), са, меко казано, предизвикателство. Някои ги наричат "трудни", но всичко се свежда до недостъпността им...

... в обширната система на хуманитарните науки е оставено място за изучаване на литературата, но понякога искаме просто хубава история, нали така? И Кинг, който притежава литературни умения и огромен писателски талант, може да ни поднесе подобна история по приятен и достъпен начин.

Поне за мен това беше една изключително интересна книга, далеч не само защото в нея става дума за Стивън Кинг. А защото е разгледан от всевъзможни страни, които човек "не вижда" като обикновен, стандартен фен, който с наслада чете книгите.
Ще си призная веднага, че най-много ми хареса "Четем изгубените произведения на Стивън Кинг" от Роки Ууд. Какво е започнал, но не е завършил един писател - особено този! - е според мен дори по-показателно от онова, което Е завършил. В този смисъл е факт, че с компютърната ера човечеството губи страшно много от гледна точка архивите на писатели, които сега вече се събират на някой скромен диск и най-често НЕ прашасват в библиотеките.
Другата ми голяма радост в този сборник статии беше "Кинг след "Скрибнър" (Кевин Кюгли), най-вече защото в подробности описва развитието на творчеството на Кинг от гледна точка не просто на авторски приумици, а на занаятчийската (и донякъде - рекламна) страна. "Как" го правят великите автори зад океана винаги ме е вълнувало не по-малко от "защо" го правят...
Споменавам тези двете статии именно защото в сборника има за всекиго по нещо и по много за всички, но като цяло темите са по-скоро любопитни и вълнуващи, докато тези две (както и "Надолу в Заешката дупка" на Джъстин Брукс) разглеждат по-необичайни въпроси: ненаписаните произведения, развитието на темите и, далеч не на последно място, феновете като колекционери. Не е ли вълнуващо: да си не просто фен-читател, а фанатичен събирач на всяка думица, излязла изпод перото на любимия автор? Как променя това мисленето за него в частност и за света като цяло?
Чудесен сборник статии и есета. Много се радвам, че имах възможността да се докосна до него.

Брайън Джеймс Фрийман, шапка ти сваляме! Така майсторски си подредил пъзела от есета в сборника "Четем Стивън Кинг", че нито нещо може да махне човек, нито друго - да прибави! За разместване пък и дума не може да става - та кой разбърква сценария на едно истинско духовно приключение?!

Кой да говори най-напред за един писател, ако не... писателите?
И ето - Стюарт О`Нан споделя, че харесва "древните богове" - "Сейлъмс Лот", "Сияние", "Сблъсък". "От самото начало Кинг ме улучи право в сърцето", казва авторът на "Романа за Холокоста" (сборник разкази "Сияние в мрака", ИК "Плеяда") и продължава разказа си за това - как словото на Краля го е вълнувало, как го е изграждало като човек и творец.

"Като много дългогодишни читатели, и аз мога да очертая хода на живота си по това - кога и къде съм чел повечето от книгите на Стивън Кинг", започва Ричард Чизмар. Неговата лична история с творчеството на Кинг е история за порастването, за раздялата с приятели, любови и илюзии, за това - как нещата си отиват от нас, но даровете на специалната книга остават.

Тези мъже не се боят да воюват с някои закостенели академични представи, според които творбите на Кинг нямат "естетически достойнства" и той "ще бъде запомнен като социологически феномен, символ на погубването на образования читател" - Тони Маджистрале например е дълбоко несъгласен с това становище и направо го разгромява.
Стивън Спинеси пък тръгва отдалеч: "Кое е най-великото изобретение на човечеството? Използването на огъня, изобретяването на колелото и създаването на интернет са все ключови за цивилизацията, но най-важното изобретение е това, за което вероятно дори не се сещате, толкова е обикновено и привично: езикът." Докъде стига, ще узнаете, ако прочетете есето "Стивън Кинг и телепатията на писането".

Изследователите на Кинг продължават да ни водят по неведомите пътища на творческата му мисъл - с Роки Ууд четем изгубените му произведения, с Робин Фърт обхождаме пространствата на Средния свят, а с Джъстин Брукс се хвърляме в Заешката дупка. "Нека си го кажем направо, без заобикалки: колекционерите са шантави хора", започва разказът му за това - какво и как събира. Всичко - свързано с Краля естествено.

И после - пак писателите. От Кевин Кюгли ще разберем накъде е тръгнало развитието на Кинг, след като сменя издателя си, а от Бев Винсън ще узнаем интересни факти за това - как вдъхновението спохожда любимия му автор.

А след писателите - пакхора на словото, сценарист и редактор. На единия - Мик Гарис - му се изплъзнала Голямата любов, "Талисманът", другият пък - Джей Франко - с години правил календарите на Кинг. (И двата имат страхотни истории за разправяне!)

За да се стигне до внушителната кода на тази словесна симфония - "Ода за Стивън Кинг" от Клайв Баркър. Тази реч, произнесена при връчването на наградата за цялостен принос на Кинг от Канадската асоциация на книгоразпространителите през 2007 г., е най-трогателното признание в любов, което сте чели. То е пълно с благодарност и топлота, с вяра в безкористната помощ и с благоговение пред кумира. То просто ви улучва право в сърцето!

There are some interesting perspectives here about the many genres Stephen King writes within. I also enjoyed the multiple discussions and angles taken on the multiple 'worlds' he has created. For those who think he is only a horror writer, you are not a serious fan, and have not read all of his novels, novellas or short stories. This book also reveals some cool background on the origins of many of his pieces of work. Not every contribution to this book was great, but many were pretty cool for this constant reader.

This was a really enjoyable collection of essays about Stephen King's writings.

While the horror genre is often pooh-poohed by "serious" critics, King has a lot more going for him than that. I find that he has the ability to distill emotions, no matter what they are, down to a very relatable way for many readers. One essay writer mentions that King's characters are usually ordinary people confronted by extraordinary circumstances. How do they react? What is it in their past that drives their behavior? I am fascinated by this and the reason I'm a huge fan of "The Walking Dead" is because I love the psychological aspect of the story. What makes good people turn bad? What makes previously dicey people become heroes? Good stuff and King explores the matter well.

But King can also scare the bejesus out of you. One essayist writes that "a horror novel is perhaps more capable of prompting deep thought than any other genre, solely because of how pure and distressing the feeling of fear can be." I suspect that Pennywise would agree.

If you're a King fan, you will enjoy this. Others, not so much. I highly recommend it to the former category of folks.

I read an ARC of this book before it released, but I also pre-ordered a copy before I knew I was getting an ARC, and then I ended up with another copy from a grab bag box. So now I have an ARC, a signed hardcover, and a regular hardcover. Oops.

How has Stephen King affected your life? For me, he first dropped into it when my partner sent me a photo of a pile of approximately 45 Stephen King books back in high school.

I distinctly remembered replying to that text with “0.o That’s a lot of Stephen King books…” He had ended up with his mother’s collection, and by doing so he brought King into both of our lives. We went from that one pile to almost two full sets of King’s novels (my collection is a bit bigger, but we’re more than happy to share with each other so we can buddy read the ones we both have or pass back and forth the ones we don’t). We’re still working our way through them; he’s going through The Dark Tower series, and I’m going to be reading Under the Dome next. These books, both the ones we like and the ones we don’t, have led to some of our stranger conversations, and we’ve bonded over them.

Questions like this one are the kinds of questions that the essays in Reading Stephen King were based on. Each essay tells the story of a writer’s own interactions with King and his work, and I loved reading all of them. A few highlights:

-“Sometimes You Go Back” by Stewart O’Nan opens the collection by bringing in the feeling of nostalgia from a person’s first King books, and as someone who clearly relates to this I felt like this was an excellent way to open up the book.

-“Disappearing Down That Rabbit Hole” by Justin Brooks starts with the line “Let’s get it all out there in the open: collectors are a weird bunch.” After reading this essay, I’m more than a little inclined to agree. This is a look into the world of collecting King’s work from a variety of perspectives; with all of the smaller pieces and lost work that’s out there in the world, it’s not as easy as you might think at first. My eyes kept getting wider and wider as I read this, and after I finished this essay I had to stare off into space a bit to digest all of the complexities involved.

-“Reading the Lost Works of Stephen King” by Rocky Wood discusses a bit more narrowly that notion of reading all of King’s work by focusing on a few certain pieces that are unavailable to the general public and yet not entirely unattainable. Another excellent look at reading deeper into King’s work.

-“Being a Non-US Stephen King Fan” by Hans-Áke Lilja was probably my favorite essay in the whole collection because while many other essays focused on work that wasn’t generally readable by people, this essay focused on just how hard it can be to get ahold of books when you’re not in the country the author lives in or you can’t read in English, and it involves a lot of waiting. This is something that gets forgotten far too often, and reading Lilja’s perspective was something I greatly appreciated.

I loved this essay collection overall, and I think it’s a wonderful treat for any King fan.

What's better to a fan of Stephen King than actually reading a new book by the master? Well, for this Constant Reader it would be talking to or reading about other people's love for the King. And that's what READING STEPHEN KING is about.

This is a collection of essays that run the gamut from of discussions from the love of a particular book, to authors dissecting how the man writes to how to collect and what Stephen King has written - both published and unpublished. Frankly, I was amazed. I was clueless about his non-fiction and his fragments of unpublished work.

You must be warned about reading this. As you page through, nodding along in agreement and remembering this passage or that, what you'll want to do upon finishing this book is surround yourself with your King collection and start reading them all over again.

This is a hodgepodge of essays that range from the terrible (it reads like a pretentious college freshman essay) to the why-is-this-here? (stuff that’s more autobiographical about the writer of the essay and only tangentially about King) to several really nice pieces. It’s an anthology, so yeah, this is gonna happen. But I did have higher expectations for this collection than it was able to live up to.

This was a really good book and interesting read, just not exactly what I thought it was going to be. I imagined stories/essays by authors that were inspired by King to become writers. And there were certainly some of those types of essay/stories in this book. But there were also a lot of, what I'll call "dissertations" that were more like academic papers or college syllabuses that just made for some very non-light reading. Which is perfectly OK (and they were good dissertations), just not exactly what I was looking for or expecting.

You never realize how much your favorite author affects other readers until you read something like this. Stephen King has done so much for so many, readers and writers alike.
This book is a thank you letter to King as well as an examination (some of these essays go way in depth!) of his writing. It is interesting to read other people’s experiences with King and his work. I highly recommend this for any Stephen King fan!

Despite having the paperback edition, I couldn't not get my eyes off this hardcover edition when I found out that it was signed by some authors that I'm familiar with like Jack Ketchum & Richard Chizmar, but I was more thrilled when the description on the book said that Frank Darabont--yes, THE FRANK DARABONT of The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and The Mist--is also among the people who signed the book.

A mostly interesting and thought-provoking collection of essays on Stephen King’s work by various people with some sort of connection. Two notable exceptions are Michael R. Collings’ piece, which reads more like his own resume, and Billy Chizmar’s piece, which reads like a high school term paper. Otherwise, it’s a good collection that examines King’s body of work in a serious, scholarly fashion.

Una cosa rara de la vida es que disfruto más leer textos sobre King que sus obras, las cuales si me gustan, pero me generan toda suerte de sentimientos encontrados porque no han envejecido muy bien que digamos. Este libro es un homenaje a Stephen King conformado por ensayos de figuras claves del horror, académicos y/o fanáticos consagrados del autor de Maine. Mis favoritos son los textos de profesores universitarios de literatura que se centran en explicar por qué lo que King escribe sí es literatura y por que están mal los snobs, como Harold Bloom. Al final, es un libro que recomiendo a los Fans de King y a toda persona que quiera saber por qué ciertos escritores no existirían sin él, como dice Clive Barker sobre sí mismo en el último texto del libro.

A collection of essays about the work of Stephen King and what it means to these individuals. But not just any individuals. Clive Barker, Mick Garris, Richard and Billy Chizmar,Jack Ketchum and more. Clive Barker crediting King for making him a household name. Garris revealing his lost hope for The Talisman to come to life. There’s only one Stephen King novel I’ve put down unfinished and Jack Ketchum making me want to pick it up again. This is a fresh view of the Stephen King universe through talented and impressive eyes. Maybe Kevin Quigley should have called his portion ‘Stephen King and Sec’

I highly recommend this collection as a fun glimpse at a Stephen Kings world of work with new input and new understandings that just may inspire you to think about them a little more or a little differently

This is a collection of essays that cover various aspects of Stephen King's works. Topics like collecting various editions, reading unpublished manuscripts, the presence of twins and twinning in his writing, and the art of his books.

It's an interesting and fair (not all of his works have been gems, and I'm sure he'd be the first to admit that) look at the writing icon. It made me want to re-read a lot of his stuff that I haven't read in a while!

A good addition for the Constant Reader. Casual readers of King wouldn't enjoy it as much.
