TROUBLE ON THE HOME FRONT It is election time on Earth and tensions are running high. As various factions fight it out, Daiba tries to use the chaos as a cover for breaking into the Mazon’s Earth headquarters. Meanwhile, in the far reaches of space, Harlock faces down an old foe.
Leiji Matsumoto (松本零士) is famous for his space operas such as Space Battleship Yamato. His style is characterized by tragic heroes; tall, slender, fragile-looking heroines with strong wills and in some cases, god-like powers; and a love of analog gauges and dials in his spacecraft.
Things are heating up as the Machine Empire rears its head and how will they affect the plans of the Mazon. Matsumoto continues what may be the definitive version of his universe's story tying together all of his various creations. The modern art style is working, Shimaboshi keeps certain things, like the Arcadia's main computer, very recognizable but updates and refreshes other aspects to avoid looking dated. Still great fun.
I really enjoyed the art in this volume. The Machine Empire styling was great. Best art of the series so far, in my opinion. We get more Harlock/Matsumoto universe characters and expansion. My continuing problem is that the dialogue and story is weak if you don't come into this series with any Harlock knowledge. I think this volume was slightly better at giving detail to follow the plot though.
