Rate this book
From American Grit co-star, former Marine Gunnery Sergeant Tee Marie Hanible, comes her story of how she became a warrior…and how you can do it too.

By the age of fifteen, Tee’s father had been murdered, she’d become a ward of the state, had mastered foster care, been expelled from school, and even found herself a victim of gun violence on the streets of the South Side of Chicago.

Having been introduced to military reform school, Tee began to see a different path for her life, a path that would lead her to become a Warrior.

From her relentless drive to be more than her circumstances, Tee found herself as part of one of the first female classes of recruits to complete the Marine Corps Crucible, as well as part of the first ever class of females to complete Marine Combat Training. As the only woman to deploy with her unit in Iraq in 2003, Tee is known as the badass female Gunnery Sergeant and trainer from FOX’s hit show American Grit. “To me, bravery and the pursuit of happiness are deeply intertwined. That’s because choosing happiness is never, ever is easy as it sounds. Doing so requires you to tune out critics who can’t see what you see for yourself. Doing so requires you let go of the sure thing and brace yourself for discomfort as you build your “new and improved” from scratch. Doing so requires you get off your butt and hustle hard....”*

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

THE WARRIOR CODE is a hybrid of memoir and self-help. Tee Marie Hanible shares her struggles growing up in poverty, being abandoned by her mother, joining a gang, surviving an abusive relationship, being a single parent in the military, and generally struggling on a day to day basis with adversity. Getting sent to military school in a last ditch effort to obtain her GED and her foster sister’s support gave her the tools she needed to enter the marines. Tee later established a non-profit to pair at-risk kids with marines, was chosen to compete on a reality show, and had a meet and greet with the Obamas. This book showcases the system she created based on her experiences to help people make big, positive changes in their lives.

The eleven tenets of Tee’s system are as follows: get grit, get tough, give a helping hand, get out of your own way, remember you’re a human being, don’t quit, be brave, know your big reason, find your tribe, stand your ground, and practice self-care. At the end of each chapter, space for “warrior work” is provided along with directed questions to help apply the principles to the reader’s unique situation. Some chapters include subtopics, while others provide a list of actionable steps.

The chapters that resonated most with me were get out of your own way and be brave. The above quotation is from the latter. Also in that chapter, Tee recommends stopping “...ceding control over your self-confidence to the whims of others.” In this age of hits to our self-esteem based on social media snubs and unsolicited comments on our personal lives, by random strangers and our nearest and dearest alike, this reminder is gold.

I really enjoyed this book and Tee’s raw and real recounting of her personal struggles. I do wish, however, that she’d included a short wrap-up chapter at the end of the book, which ends after the chapter discussing her eleventh tenet. There’s an introduction, but the ending seems a bit abrupt to me. Still I feel empowered and inspired by Tee’s story and her warrior code.

Thanks to Amazon for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I follow Ms. Hanible on Twitter but didn't realize she had a book coming out. I was curious to read what she had to say and thought it would be a good change of pace. Hanible takes the reader through what it says on the tin: 11 principles to release your inner badass interspersed with her life story and how she got to where she is now.

After her father's death, Hanible was placed into foster care, eventually kicked out of school and then entered military school. Along the way she shares her insights, her thoughts and experiences and what she learned as her path took her to where she is today.

I'd say the book just wasn't for me. I've never cared for self-help books and perhaps couldn't really relate to her experiences much (but they were interesting) so this wasn't really something up my alley. But it was awesome to read up on where she began to where she is now and overall I was glad to learn a little more about the person behind a Twitter handle I follow.

Other people might enjoy it so I'd recommend you thumb through it before deciding if it's a pickup for you. It'd probably make a great gift for the right person, too.

The author shares 11 codes to empower you and help you realize your potential. She ensures us that by living life by her code we will all be bad-asses.
I liked the premise. I appreciate her story. i wanted to LOVE this book. But if I am honest I didn't. The writing was flat and monotonous for me and that made what could have been an incredibly engaging story, a really tough read.
This may be a woman I would want to see speak at an event, or maybe put out some encouraging tweets, but I would not be tempted to buy any books with her name on them.
Her warrior work for each code set this book apart from other self help books because it gave clear action steps.
The book has potential to help the right person certainly wont make my list of favorite self-help books.

The publisher provided an ARC through Netgalley. I have voluntarily decided to read and review, giving my personal opinions and thoughts

Always a pleasure to read a book by one of my fellow Marines. Loved the connection I felt to Tee’s story as the common ground is there. Being able to connect in a book is so important when reading something. Her memories of training, deploying and being around the band of brothers (with some instances of not being part of the same team) brought back so much for me especially with me retiring just 6 months ago. I would have gotten the book but because I drive almost all day it’s impossible to read through a book without interruptions therefore I did the audiobook and it was great to capture the reading in Tee’s voice. I would say that the recordings were a little off as there were instances of repeated lines and voice tone changing that was obvious, but I enjoyed.

When I first started reading this book, I thought, "Damn I have nothing to complain about." But, that wasn't the point, to compare hardships or adversities because our lives are all relative.

And, with further reading of the Warrior Code, I realized it pertained to me more than I ever expected. Especially the part about being my own saboteur. If ever you need a bootcamp for your brain and spirit, this is the book for you.

Heartfelt and strong, Tee Marie weaves her life in and around hope and promise that one day, you too can get off your ass and be the best you can be, no matter what circumstances made you. Thanks, Tee for sharing your life and wisdom with us.

OK so compared to fiction I like this kind of book --someone who cares about people who are deprived and hurting and wants to live a life of service to humanity by sharing their experience strength and hope speaking from the heart . Some books are trash and some books are the life experiences of someone written down for the benefit of others

But she's no "bad ass" and this book is not about being one but rather about channeling ones will power to achieve goals . Its about being a good resilient successful human setting and successfully achieving goals and maintaining friendships .So don't be put off by the title . She has a close relationship with God and lives to serve and she is right on about many things for the stage of evolution her soul is at.

She says "You gotta get your will power into high gear "
I really had to listen to it twice ..once to wipe the crap out of my mind then once to really hear what she was trying to say ..

Maybe its not anything you have not heard before but is all stuff we need to hear again and again

yes you can critic her unprofessional narration ( we can always find fault ) but its from the heart of someone who has struggled and found a way ( or verified a way ) and its stuff I need to hear or be reminded of ,

Every one can get something really good out of this book if they look for it instead of fault finding.

This book also helped me understand women's continuing plights , the south side of Chicago and the continuing plight of blacks a little better .It may not change a thing but I understand and someday that understanding may make a difference. If nothing else it make a better me .

Meh. I vacillated between giving this 2 or 3 stars. I think the issue is that I am not the target audience for this book because I am already too far along in the process for this to add value. For people who consistently make terrible life choices and feel like they are floundering, however, I think there is something to gain from her story. This is a story of how military school and the Marines helped turn a troubled kid's life around, and how these experiences can be distilled into a set of steps to follow. Because of the focus of the book, I think this is a great fit for people in their late teens and older who are struggling to get their shit together. But if you've already gotten your shit together and are just looking for general self-help, there are better fits out there for your needs.

I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. I have been reading a lot of self-help books that would help me with things going on inside of my mind. I saw this and I need to feel strong and confident and this showed me how to work toward the goals that I have set for myself. When I use books like this I have to keep it for a few months before I say if it works for me or not. I know nothing works over night.

Very inspiring listening to how the author over came the pain and struggle of her childhood being a single mom and joining the military. This book turned all of that into The Warrior Code: 11 Principles to Unleash the Badass Inside of You. I listened to the audiobook. The book was narratored by the author. The production of the audiobook was a little off, the editing could have been better. The lack of editing didn't take away from the power behind her story.

Lots of audio errors. This recording needs to be edited. There are numerous places where the text is repeated. There are also a number of places when the reader can be heard saying she needs to go back and reread certain sections. A good editing would clean all that up. And the different voices is a bit distracting, again, editing, one person reading text.

Solid book. It’s full of inspiration and proves that hard work and determination does pay off. I liked that there are parts at the end of the chapters where you can respond to questions and use the book as a “workbook”.

An okay book. She is a fighter. She made so many bad decisions when she was young. Glad it worked out for her. I liked David Goggin’s “Can’t hurt me” way more.

I enjoy reading non-fiction books in between literary fiction. I picked up a copy of The Warrior Code by Tee Marie Hanible in a recent book haul purchase. This woman has been through so much hardship in her life. It was inspiring to read her story and the journey she’s taken in life to get where she is today.

The Warrior Code was a quick, thoughtful read about a strong woman that has endured so much pain and difficult situations. It’s important to read about the struggles others have gone through to gain insight from their perspective and experience. This book is filled with tips on overcoming obstacles and pushing towards goals.

In a Nutshell: Inspiring and touching story filled with motivational tips.

The author shares 11 "warrior codes" that are there to empower you and help you realize your potential.
All the 11 codes are excellent and make for great advice.
Each code also has a "warrior work", which is kinda like homework, or a call to action. I think is a nice addition to the book, if you're looking for more than just inspiration and you would actually like to get up and do something.
That being said the writing felt too monotonous and it was a slow read for me. The ideas are great, and I still believe this book has a great potential to help others, but just wasn't my favorite self-help book.

The Warrior Code is a motivational, self-help book about resilience and perseverance. Tee Marie Hanible provides a roadmap to tapping into your “inner badass” and working through conflict, challenges and adversity. You’ll enjoy this book's take charge and get it done prose. You'll also be inspired by the author’s complex journey.

I received a review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley for my honest review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Synopsis from the Publisher/NetGalley.com
From American Grit co-star, former Marine Gunnery Sergeant Tee Marie Hanible comes the story of how she became a warrior...and how you can do it, too.

In The Warrior Code, entrepreneur, philanthropist, reality star, and retired Gunnery Sergeant Tee Marie Hanible serves up eleven principles to awaken your inner badass and thrive in the face of adversity.

After surviving the death of her father, enduring foster care, and being expelled from school, Tee joined military reform school, where she began uncovering her inner warrior. As part of one of the first female classes of recruits to complete the Marine Corps Crucible and the Marine Combat Training, and as the only woman to deploy with her unit to Iraq in 2003, Tee tested her mettle and learned the key to becoming an unbreakable woman.

With insightful honesty and wisdom, and set against the backdrop of Tee’s life, The Warrior Code will help you understand that things can beat us back from realizing our true potential...but the key is finding the way to realize one’s own innate strength.
