"Father of Contention" by Lanie Mores is a captivating blend of science fiction, horror and the supernatural.
Set in 1972, the story follows handsome and brilliant German scientist Renner Scholz as his rational beliefs collide with the unexplainable when he meets beautiful psychic Milena Nowak.
The author skillfully weaves a tale of love, obsession, and the pursuit of knowledge and power, as Renner's quest for understanding Milena's psychic ability takes a dark turn.
Author Lanie Mores masterfully explores the consequences of tampering with the unknown, creating a thrilling narrative that kept me at the edge of my seat.
The dark transformation of Renner and the impact on his relationship with Milena added layers of complexity to this gripping tale.
This book had me turning the pages at full speed. Yet, I didn't want the story to end. The characters were well crafted and nuanced, drawing me into the complexities of Renner and Milena's evolving relationship. The author skillfully navigates the realms of science and mysticism, creating a dark and suspenseful world that added depth to the narrative. The intricate balance between the supernatural and scientific elements kept me engaged, making "Father of Contention" a compelling and thrilling read from start to finish.

“Father of Contention” follows scientist Renner Scholz as he continues his research in recombinant DNA technology, and Milena Nowak, a psychic he eventually falls in love with. Renner, previously a skeptic when it comes to psychic phenomena, becomes obsessed with understanding Milena’s powers. This obsession leads him down a dark and frightening path. Renner’s fascination changes him for the worse, and Milena is left at his mercy.
Author Lanie Mores clearly did her own research while writing “Father of Contention.” The novel goes in depth when discussing Renner’s scientific work with recombinant DNA technology, along with his other research projects. The author’s interest in these topics bleeds into the novel and adds an extra layer of intrigue.
Mores also does an excellent job of exploring an abusive relationship. She doesn’t glorify it, instead examining how a woman can become trapped in one and unable to leave. She explains how the abusive person in the relationship justifies their treatment of the victim. It’s a sad situation to read about, but it’s written in a responsible and reasonable way.
“Father of Contention” is written as a character driven novel. Renner and Milena’s personal journeys are the focal points for most of the plot. Unfortunately, I found they, and the other characters, are also this novel’s greatest weakness. They are passive characters who don’t make many decisions of their own. The main antagonist, another scientist named Paul, is rude and aggressive towards Renner and Milena from the beginning without any explanation. He goes out of his way to make life difficult for Renner at both a personal and professional level, yet Renner has done nothing to cause any of this animosity. Paul’s behavior towards them also changes without warning or provocation. He spends much of the book being hateful, but every so often his personality completely switches, and he becomes friendly. Renner and Milena themselves comment on these uncharacteristic changes, yet they are never explained to them or the audience.
“Father of Contention” by Lanie Mores is a novel for a group of readers who are interested in both science fiction and psychic phenomena. Readers will find themselves drawn into Renner’s obsessions and sympathizing with Milena’s situation. It’s an easy to read novel that can be finished relatively quickly. You should read it during a rainy afternoon with the lights dimmed to fuel the creepy atmosphere this novel creates!

This was an amazing story told by a talented writer!
Lanie Mores has woven her knowledge of scientific theory/works together with elements of horror and the paranormal in a captivating story. The author’s interest in the science behind the characters’ goals in the story shines through clearly. The more I got into the story, the more interesting it became. What happens next? I couldn’t begin to guess—I will have to read Gatekeepers of Eden and find out!!

Father of Contention, this book is written artistically by Lanie Mores, using knowledge of science and creative writing to boot in order to weave her intellectually dictated story. Mores introduces us to a supernatural tale that readers are sure to enjoy, beginning in a time of history shortly after World War II in a European setting. If you are fan of the supernatural; have a passion for science-fiction or fantasy; or perhaps you have a fetish for the devil, this book is certain to tease your every “Desire.”
As I read this novel, the passion of the protagonist was felt on a personal level from the very beginning. The science embedded in the story was utilized creatively. It made the novel feel Science-Fiction with a historic and fantasy right-hook that is sure to catch you by surprise.
Never one to shy away from likes and dislikes, I found this novel difficult to begin. Hear me out! It is not what I am used to reading. It is not among the list of books I normally race out to read. That being said, I love reading something new. I love teasing my brain with something outside my preferred reading. As I said, I was slow to get into it, which built the suspense more for me as I read on. This author’s style of writing has quickly become among my favorites. The reading style you expect and format you are accustomed to is one thing, but when something new or different than you are used to comes along, it is better! Now, Lanie Mores is in my top 20 favorite authors.
The prequel of the series delivers an origin story for Renner. Scientifically driven, this story develops plots and subplots galore. From DNA manipulations to murder, Lanie Mores delivers a barrage of facets to her tale that are sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. As I read, I thought of the ethical violations of medicine. I thought of the relationships as the developed and were torn apart. The supernatural components of this novel accent the science that drives the story.
Lanie Mores who? You will not be asking that after you read Father of Contention! As I stated earlier, she has made my top 20 list of favorite authors, a very rare statement by me. In fact, a first written in any of my reviews. I enjoy H.P. Lovecraft stories and this novel felt as though it would fit within his genre of madness and horror. The mind craves such content, though many fears to read tales like this. It leaves you thinking of the possibilities of your reality, which for me is what makes a horror book or film that much more frightening. The realism. The practicality. The probability of that fiction becoming a reality is horrific. Well done, Lanie Mores.
Father of Contention is a prequel as it were to a series; a series in which I look forward to delving deeper into. Lanie Mores has intrigued me with her scientific tale of… A MUST READ! Renner might as well be played by Tom Ellis if it were to go to film. He is who I envisioned portraying Renner as I read the novel. Lanie Mores knows how to tease the synapsis of your mind. This book is an amazing tale and worthy of one of my rare 4-Star rankings. I found myself arguing over whether it deserves that fifth star. Yes, it is that damn good.

Reader beware: once you start this book, you won't be able to put it down!
Father of Contention is the tale of Renner Scholz, a brilliant German scientist in the 70's who comes to America to study genetics. Renner has a dark and troubled past but is able to adopt a scholarly optimistic outlook on life through his studies and research. Skeptical and pessimistic towards all things supernatural and paranormal, Renner soon finds himself being drawn deeper into a dark, twisted world he did not think existed.
This sci-fi/paranormal/suspense novel is easily a five-star read. I HIGHLY recommend this book to any adult reader. It is extremely well-written, has an excellent flow and pace to the novel, and keeps you wanting more and more! I never once thought, "oh come on, get to the good part," because it's all good! Clearly, this is the beginning of something amazing. I can't wait to get started on the next installment!

Father of Contention is a mix of reality and fantasy, hard science and the paranormal, and love and jealousy. The story focuses on the evolution of a man named Renner who was left orphaned at a young age by a devastating tragedy. Through a stroke of luck, Renner is adopted and grows into a conscientious man of science with altruistic personal and professional goals that compel him forward in his studies. Renner is a wonderfully complex character whose thought processes are revealed to the reader, helping to build an entirely sympathetic character. Is he a perfect person? No. Is he flawed? Yes, to a reasonable degree. He’s a young graduate student from Germany, navigating 1970’s American culture. But he has good intentions. Author Mores creates Renner with details that make him feel very real and relatable. He’s not unreasonably perfect. Who is, anyway?
Renner is joined by a cast of characters who bring even more opportunities for readers to get to know him through their relationships. Some relationships are full of conflict, such as the relationship he has with his antagonistic roommate, Paul. While another is full of romance, such as the relationship he has with the alluring psychic, Milena. Speaking of Milena, I found her to be a great character. She has her own ambitions, motivations, and interests outside of those held by Renner. Milena’s talent as a psychic, while questioned by Renner, the man of science, is an essential addition to the story as the paranormal aspects of the plot begin to unfold.
I found the story to be unique, with multiple interesting characters, navigating through a realistic and familiar world while a slowly building paranormal aspect slowly unfolds all around them. Author Mores takes opportunities to build in an understanding of the darkness surrounding Renner through seemingly benign events. The culmination of these events leads the reader to a greater understanding of what exactly is going on. Reading the story through once, tells you all you need to know, but taking a moment to go back and read the Prologue and Interlude after all is said and done, reveals the evil that lurked in the shadows throughout the entire story.
Father of Contention is a story for adults who enjoy some triggers in their books. I wasn’t expecting some of what transpired, but I think it was necessary to show the true darkness that was always a part of the story being told. There are references to science (recombinant DNA) and religion (Anakim) that are essential parts of this story. And while that may all sound a little confusing, don’t worry. Author Mores’ storytelling style is smooth and descriptive, pulling you in from the first page until the last. Definitely give this five star story a chance to impress you!

This book!!! Father of Contention was exactly what I needed to get out of a reading slump. It's been a while since I've read a book that I did not want to put down!
This book pulls together elements of science and fantasy in such an intriguing way. Renner is a graduate student studying genetics, highly motivated to create a name for himself in the science field after losing so much as a child. When he meets Milena (who I love so dearly), he is immediately doubtful of her claim of psychic abilities. But once he starts to see her powers for what they are, he wonders about the role that genetics play in psychic abilities. His desperation for answers leads him down a dangerous path that he may not be able to return from.
I loved the dynamic between Renner and Milena through the first part of the book as their worldviews were in conflict. I also could see Lanie planting seeds throughout the book related to genetic manipulation, dangerous magic, and an otherworldly voice that alluded to something bigger going on. You get the sense that Lanie has big plans for this series and we are only getting a taste of it!
I can't say much about the crazy twists of this plot without spoiling it, but watching Renner's devolution was wild. I'm so impressed by how Lanie created so much empathy for such a flawed character who became susceptible to powers bigger than himself.
I could also tell that Lanie has a background as a therapist because mental illness was handled well in this book too. You could see the role that trauma played in Renner's story and very realistic responses from Milena on her journey as well. I wanted to yell out loud as I was rooting for her!!
The ending.... Wow. Jaw dropped! Had to tell my husband about the final lines 😂 it leaves us with such suspense that I need book two now!!!

Father of Contention is a beautifully written novel by Lanie Mores. ( @laniemores )
It is the story of Renner Scholz, a German doctor of medicine who comes to America to study genetics. He meets and instantly falls for exotic beauty, Milena Nowak, a psychic who has seen that their future is intertwined. Being a skeptic of the supernatural, Renner becomes fascinated and eager to find scientific proof of the unknown, and what a dangerous game that is to play.
Lanie Mores has an elegance to her writing that captivates you and pulls you in, slowly unfolding the layers of the story ever so delicately. As each layer is revealed Renner begins to journey to the place where obsession becomes mania.
I couldn’t help but be reminded of the stories of old where mad scientists, such as Dr.. Moreau, Edward Hyde, and Victor Frankenstein’s quest for knowledge and greatness pushed boundaries and unleashed the maniacs within.
What Lanie Mores has done so beautifully with Father of Contention is weave together supernatural and science-fiction in an intriguing tale which both precedes and then becomes the scientist’s decline into madness. What you’re left with, is a wonderful beginning of a new series.
If you like sci-fi, supernatural/paranormal then I highly recommend Father of Contention, the first book in Lanie Mores’ Father of Contention Series.

Lanie Mores has an elegance to her writing that captivates you and pulls you in, slowly unfolding the layers of the story ever so delicately. As each layer is revealed Renner begins to journey to the place where obsession becomes mania.
I couldn’t help but be reminded of the stories of old where mad scientists, such as Dr.. Moreau, Edward Hyde, and Victor Frankenstein’s quest for knowledge and greatness pushed boundaries and unleashed the maniacs within.
What Lanie Mores has done so beautifully with Father of Contention is weave together supernatural and science-fiction in an intriguing tale which both precedes and then becomes the scientist’s decline into madness. What you’re left with, is a wonderful beginning of a new series.
If you like sci-fi, supernatural/paranormal then I highly recommend Father of Contention, the first book in Lanie Mores’ Father of Contention Series.

I don’t usually gravitate toward hardcore science fiction, but Father of Contention by Mores completely changed that for me. From the very first page, Mores drew me into a world where science, suspense, and the supernatural collide—and I was hooked.
What truly sets this book apart is Mores’ masterful writing. The dialogue is sharp, engaging, and laced with just enough tension to keep you constantly on edge. The twists and turns come fast, yet never feel forced, pulling you deeper into the story with every chapter.
What I loved most was the perfect blend of genres—romance, suspense, and a touch of the paranormal. Renner and Milena’s relationship is beautifully written; their connection feels real, raw, and evolves in such a satisfying way as they face their share of bumps and challenges.

When Renner met Milena, he was immediately attracted to her. When Milena told him that he is a psychic, he doesn't believed in the existence of a psychic because it's not proven scientifically. Read the story yourself to know what turn their first encounter will take.
It is the debut novel of the author. The writing style is amazing with smooth narration. Cover of the book is eye catchy and it immediately catches reader's attention. The storyline is pretty interesting with romance blooming between the two main characters.

The supernatural meets the scientific in this exciting tale that stays one step ahead of the reader at every twist. Renner is a man possessed by a strong desire to disprove his cruel biological father’s contemptuous labels. But life happens, and as each plan crumbles, he grasps for any handhold that will help realize his goals. Unwittingly, he grabs the devil’s coattails and is infested by an entity so powerful it mutates every cell into a cancerous aberration.

Once you start this book, you won't stop.
I have now read the book twice and I still enjoyed every second of it. It's a Supernatural thriller mixed with Fringe Science and I love the creativity behind the world of story and the great characters that entertain us from beginning to end. This book dives into the ultimate debate between Science and Creation and what drives us to the truth. Can Science ultimately explain the creation the universe, and, are psychics a part of creation or can science define them?
I love the tagline - There was only meant to be one creator, it captures perhaps the age old question about science and can it define the creation of the universe. I also love the idea of control and how decisions made for science can have terrible consequences. I love the Supernatural element and how one man's quest will test his humanistic elements.

This book was the perfect blend of romance, suspense, and paranormal sci-fi. Lanie Mores did a wonderful job of building a believable world full of intricate detail, complete with a well rounded cast of characters. You can really tell there was a lot of care and attention put into all the scientific descriptions of certain elements and concepts throughout the story. Renner and Milena’s relationship was well written from start to finish. I loved watching the highs and lows of their connection unfold as the story progressed. And then there was Paul. He was a love/hate relationship for me (you’ll have to read the book and be your own judge on his character). The suspense and paranormal aspects start as a bit of a slow burn, but once certain events happen, the plot takes an intense turn. Before you know it, this story will have you by the neck, refusing to let go until the final page. And even then, you’ll be wondering what happens next!

Wow! What a fantastic read! I was hooked from the first words, and wanted more when it ended! Lanie Mores is an intelligent writer who does her research! All of the science was interesting and was woven expertly with the romance and paranormal. I really appreciated how well developed the characters were; I truly felt their angst, confusion, love, hate, longing, sympathy, and diabolical evil. Nothing hooks me more than complex characters and Renner is just that! Even when he was off the rails, I still loved him and hoped he would return to who he really was. You won't regret buying this book, and your friends will want to borrow it!

This books was so much fun to read. The way the author combined science and the supernatural, it was so convincing that I spent the whole time wondering how much was real and how much she created herself. And Renner. Poor, sweet, misguided Renner. Mores makes you love him from the start, to the point that even when he's gone to far (and I mean, he went WAY too far) you can't help but feel bad for him because you know what he went through to get there and why. The author is an amazing storyteller, and I'm so excited to see what the rest of this series entails!

I’ve finished the first book in the Father of Contention Series and I must say that I’m hooked. Lanie was able to get me so attached to the story that I found myself openly saying “I hate you Paul” or “you’re blowing it, Renner”. I loved the development of Renner and the changes he went through. There’s so much I want to say about Milena but I don’t want to spoil anything. You’re going to love her and Father of Contention as a whole. Book 2 Guardian of Angel is on my TBR list for 2023 and I’m highly looking forward to it. Highly recommend!

I could not put this book down! The way Lanie spins a tale of love and heartache is genius. Her craft of storytelling pulls you in and does not let you go. The journey with Renner and Milena is a spellbinding adventure that leaves you wanting to go farther with them when the book comes to an end. A must-read! Bravo, Lanie Mores!

From powerful, to gripping, to at times disturbing, Father of Contention is a wonderful opening novel to Lanie Mores’ series. Brilliant and gripping sci-fi fantasy thriller!
I was hooked from the first page, which is saying something since “Father of Contention” is not my normal genre read. The main character, Renner, instantly grabbed my attention. I felt for him in so many ways that as the story progressed, I hurt along with him, shared his joy, his triumphs, his challenges, and his love. And then I was riveted by his actions. WIDE-eyed riveted.
This is a story where you scream at and along with the characters. A thrilling rollercoaster of a ride that scares you at the same time you need MORE. More surprises, more cringes, more heart melting.
Lanie Mores is brilliant. Her character development, psychology, and nitty gritty science knowledge connecting DMT, the pineal gland, and psychic abilities blew my mind. I’m now inspired to learn more about this fascinating subject.
Gods, and then there’s the poetic narrative of a demon.

What a great addition to the Sci Fi and Fantasy Novel Genre. I loved the fact that the author was able to transport her reader to the exact setting with the characters. Renner, I love that name, but the way, was such a fascinating character for me.
I enjoyed the writing style and the pacing. There were parts that moved very fast and then other parts that slowed down, just enough to let us catch our breaths. The cover of this novel is in your face and beautiful and I liked that the novel was able to stand up to that.
There are a lot of ups and downs for these characters both individually and as a unit. It was hearbreaking at times.

Wow! I really enjoyed this book. The story took a surprising turn midway. I enjoyed the slow burn at the beginning and the intensity at the end. I am now addicted to the series.
