According to the Lost Texts, the sins of the mother are laid on the shoulders of her female children My mother was a necromancer and the shadow of her conviction and death blots out my hard work to be considered Pious Standing in the very religious settlement where I live. Though I’ve been exonerated through the Necromancer Trial, there are those who are convinced that I am a heretic, a devil-woman, someone who should be exiled, or worse, killed. I have to escape and my only hope is for Quade to win my hand at the Bridal Auction.
Rhiannon Frater is the award-winning author of the As the World Dies zombie trilogy (Tor) as well as independent works such as The Last Bastion of the Living (declared the #1 Zombie Release of 2012 by Explorations Fantasy Blog and the #1 Zombie Novel of the Decade by B&N Book Blog).
She was born and raised in Texas where she currently resides with her husband and furry children (a.k.a pets).
She loves scary movies, sci-fi and horror shows, playing video games, cooking, dyeing her hair weird colors, and shopping for Betsey Johnson purses and shoes.
Just when you think Ilyse’s world couldn’t make your skin crawl any more, Rhiannon Frater gives it one more sadistic twist, followed by another and wraps it up in a barbed wire tale of evil, egos, and perverted power.
THE ACCUSED DEAD may, at first glance, start out a little slow, over-wrought with dark, demented customs that are heart-piercing and anger inducing. BUT, as I slid into Ilyse’s life, the stacked-against-her deck she has been dealt, every excruciating event, it felt real. I felt her feelings, saw events through her eyes and understood so many of her actions.
The Bridal Auction becomes one more thing for Ilyse’s people, her father and the Elders to torment and humiliate her with. If not for the few, unexpected allies she finds, even her own heart and determination wouldn’t be enough for her to survive as she discovers what powers she truly possesses and the truths about the Dead.
Deliciously dark, torturously tense and emotionally gutting, Ms. Frater’s world is nothing short of a living nightmare. Fabulous world-building, tremendously strong character development, this is NOT your typical zombie read, but it may be one of your most intense!

Can I say I missed Frater and the intense, developed addictive world she creates? The Accused Dead picks up right where book one left off. Ilyse is busy preparing on the morning of the Bridal Action. She is hoping everything she and Quade planned will go off without a hitch. Even though she was exonerated (twice) through the Necromancer Trial, she fears people in the community want her dead particularly their powerful leader.
As I stated in my previous review, the settlement Ilyse lives in follows the Lost Text. It reminds me of a very strict Amish or Mennonite community. The world fell apart due to a zombie outbreak and gated communities sprouted up. As the world rebuilt they learned to live with the dead. Some communities cut ties with the world. Their teaching showed that the Necromancers allowed the dead to rise and caused the fall of man. They do not permit modern advancements and medication and believe technology is a gateway to evil.
In The Accused Dead, Frater continues to flesh out the world we find ourselves in and exposes the cracks. I devoured this story in one sitting as I never got to a point where I felt I could set it down. The Bridal Auction had me gripping my Kindle. Sabotage, overheard conversations and fear of the secret necromancer exposing Ilyse hung in the air. I felt as if I were on display. What a horrible way to decide a young woman's fate.
The story that unfolds pulled Ilyse in many directions. I honestly didn't know what she would decide. Quade would like her to join a society that will teach her control. Someone else wants her to escape and join the rebel necromancers. It was nerve wracking. Meanwhile her biggest concern was exposure or worse being stoned to death.
Toss in zombies, crazy zealots, and this oppressive town and you've got yourself an intense story. Like the first book it resolves the immediate situation but for every answer ten more sit in the wings. It left me eager for more. I hope we get another book this year. *hint-hint* This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

The Accused Dead is the second installment in author Rhiannon Frater's The Hidden Necromancer series. The story picks up right where The Unblessed Dead left off. Having survived yet another test to determine whether or not she's a necromancer (thanks to the fact that her mother once saved the community from the so called Unblessed dead), Protagonist Ilyse Nott is under the microscope by certain members of the Council of Crats who don't believe that she's innocent no matter how many tests she has to take to prove herself.
What an amazing sequel. We dive deeper into Ilyse's world and get to see the dark underbelly of everything that goes on in the settlement and just how much corruption controls it. Betrayal, friendship, family, it's all there. So much happens it left me shocked. What an ending! I absolutely loved it. I hope there's more for this is a world Rhiannon Frater created that I want more of. This sequel definitely delivers and keeps you glued to the pages until the finale full of twists you never see coming. An astonishing must-read zombie series that's gripping as well as mesmerizing all at the same time. Very well done.
Wow! I don’t know what to say except that I do love this world that the author created in The Hidden Necromancer series. I love the mixture of zombies and necromancers roaming the earth. The zombies have been roaming the earth for a very long time and there are a few who can control said zombies but there is a price to pay if they are caught using their powers.
So it goes without saying that no one is ever told that they may have powers where they could control the dead. It anyone is ever discovered to be a necromancer it could be fatal for them. They could be killed or sent over the wall to live or try to live with the unblessed dead.
This is the position our protagonist Ilyse finds herself in. She has pasted all of their tests to prove her to be a necromancer but no one believes her and someone is still out to get her and prove her to be a necromancer.
The only option she has now is for someone to bid for her hand in marriage at the Bridal Action. She just has to hope that the new guy in town Quade comes through for her at the Bridal Action and hopes his bid is enough for her father to accept and then she can leave town with him.
Of course she could just go over the wall like her older sister Angelina but she is afraid of the unblessed dead that are waiting on the other side of the wall.
The Accused Dead gives us more insight to all the corruption and betrayal that is going on behind the scene of this new world of the undead. Come join Ilyse in her world with a new twist on zombies and fighting for her life and to prove that she is not a bad person. A world that strives to make everyone seem perfect; to live a life of pious standing on the surface but underneath there is something dark and sinister lurking.
The Accused Dead is filled with twist and turns around every corner that kept me on the edge of my seat not able to put it down with wanting to know what was going to happen next. I couldn’t flip the pages fast enough to find out what Ilyse and some of the more sinister characters had in store for us. I will have to say the ending really surprised me I honestly never thought it would happen quite the way it did but I have to say I loved it. I can’t wait to read what Ilyse has planned for us in the next book.
I would recommend The Accused Dead to all fans of zombies, a little magic and a whole lot of suspense. But I would like to suggest that you start with the first book in the series The Unblessed Dead to get the full story and to know how Ilyse’s journey began.
This is the second book I’ve read/listened to by Rhiannon Frater. I enjoyed the original twist on zombies with the restrictive social organization. The suspense behind the rogue necromancer is engaging. The book gives us a conclusion at the end, but also a big reveal that leads into the next book. These books are best listened to in order.
This is the second book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Laura Bannister ) and I would listen to another. She does well giving life to all the characters and her style especially suits the main character. She brings out Ilyse’s innocence, strength, naivety, and struggle to conform to the beliefs she’s been brought up with.
There are no explicit sex scenes, or excessive violence. There is the occasional swearing.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and voluntarily left this unbiased review. Please feel free to comment on whether you found my review helpful.
Finally got around to read this and it did not disappoint, the world building is great if a little vague on a few things about the rest of this after apocalypse world but that is to be expected since our narrator does not know, its characters are well fleshed out and manage to surprise, even small ones like Zellie. I had managed to conclude part of the "who done it" but it went beyond that and it was heartbreaking. The whole settlement is built on hypocrisies that is to be expected on a society like this but Ilyse manages to give them a fight. Can't wait to see where things go in the next book especially the relationship with Quade!
Rhiannon is one of my favorite authors. I’m so happy she gave me the opportunity to listen to and review her his series. The characters are written so well and I love them. I loved getting to read more about the unclaimed and seeing that all the men aren’t as pious as they claim to be. The Angelina story line is a bit heartbreaking. Think handmaids tale but throw some supernatural powers in there with the threat of zombies. I can’t wait for the next book! Narration was excellent as well.
I was voluntarily provided this review copy at no charge by the author, publisher and or narrator.
Ilyse faces more problems, doubts about who she can trust, and plenty of danger! She begins to suspect everything she has ever known is not as she believed and is forced to endure an emotional rollercoaster in her fight to survive and uncover the truth. Ilyse's story kept me on the edge of my seat - I couldn't put the book down, I can't wait for the next instalment!
This sequel is an exciting read. Ms. Frater’s word bring a new world and Ms. Bannister’s voice brings it to life. Ilyse has to leave town… or die. Who’s an ally and who’s not. We will see. She needs her family, friends, and Quad by her side. Are they enough? Revelations and secrets galore. I will be listening to #3 soon.
This book is amazing. The author is extremely talented at world building and creating well developed characters that I care about. This is the best series I've read this year and i can't wait till book three is released.
wow, I finished this in 6 days. I haven't read a trilogy this fast in years. Loved the twist at the end. I thought I knew what was going to happen but nope! This world Rhiannon created is crazy scary. Especially for a woman. Onward to the third.
I can not wait to get the next book! I would love to see this become a movie, that is if they wouldn’t butcher it! I honestly couldn’t put it down. Okay I’ve got another book to go get! I highly recommend this series!
I am loving this series! I was nervous that the second book wouldn't be as good as the first but it was. I ended up finishing this book in a few short hours. The end was certainly unexpected!
