In the fourth Terrence Reid book, Reid and Anne are back in Glasgow, trying to make a go of their patched-up marriage, when a string of nanny kidnappings hits a little too close to home. Lured by an internet-based trap, sixteen-year-old American au pair Lizzie Frost is snatched from the chilly Glasgow streets, making her the third girl to disappear in similar circumstances in as many months. Scottish Police Superintendent Terrence Reid’s team is charged with finding the girls and stopping whoever’s behind the abductions before another girl disappears. But that’s easier said than there are more questions than answers, and everyone has something to hide. As the complex layers of deceit are unraveled, the betrayals mount up, threatening to destroy families, careers, and lives. After Reid’s own family becomes part of the case, he’s forced to confront moral choices that threaten his most basic beliefs.
This is a well-crafted story highlighting one of the most horrific crimes committed against women and children today--human trafficking for sex exploitation. In this novel, most of the victims are young women still in their teens...au pairs far from home and parental supervision. Some of the host families are complicit in the crimes, which makes it even more shocking. It's important that we keep this terrible problem in the public eye, whether it be through fiction or journalistic reporting.
This is the first of Birk's Terrence Reid mysteries I've read, so now I'm adding the first three in the series to my Want to Read list.
Well plan development. Like the side romance angle woven in. Keeps interest moving from one chapter to the next. Recommended for romance/mystery readers.
A so called police procedural that unfortunately includes torture porn, sexual harassment viewed as "cute", and a romantic relationship where the man is controlling, jealous, and misogynistic. Particularly disappointing coming from a female author. Not for me.
Had me on the edge of my seat once again! This was another book in a series that I always have a hard time putting down and I always look forward to picking up again with great anticipation.
