Book 12 in the Spineward Sectors Series: Admiral’s Nemesis, Part II
Bugs, Battleships and Blaster fire abound in this latest adventure of Jason Montagne and the Multi-Sector Patrol Fleet of the Spine.
Angered at the loss of the Reclamation Fleet and an easy conquest of the Spineward Sectors the Empire Strikes back and hard. The only man standing in their way is the same person Arnold Janeski handed the keys of a battleship to all those years ago.
Determined to defend the Spine against all comers the Little Admiral prepares to stand tall but when old Confederation politicians sell the Spine to the Empire and send a Confederation Fleet, the Glorious Fleet of Liberation, to enforce the decision he is left scrambling.
Loyalties in the Spine will be tested to the breaking point... and beyond.
Will his allies stand beside him one more time or will the cost of victory prove too high for subordinates and new superiors alike?
But whether its the New Confederation or the same Old one he's been serving all long this is one Admiral that's not prepared to take the situation laying down.
Battle lines are drawn. Tempers flare and Senator Charles Cornwallis has assembled the largest fleet the Spineward Sectors has ever seen and is prepared to use it. With the 2nd Naval Reserve Flotilla under his direct command and the Glorious Fleet of Liberation at his beck and call the Senator believes nothing in the Spine can stop him.
The only person who disagrees? Admiral Montagne of the Multi-Sector Patrol Fleet.
Politics abound, fleets fly and broadsides blast as the Little Admiral finally meets his Nemesis head on.
Has the Little Admiral finally met his match?
Who will win?
Find out in this the latest installment of the Spineward Sectors Series by Luke Sky Wachter
Hey there guys. This is your friendly neighborhood Author, stopping by for a quick biography. As you probably guessed my name isn't Luke Sky Wachter. It is true that I'm publishing under my Son's name. As you can probably guess from that little factoid, I'm a huge Sci-fi buff, having named my son after such an iconic figure and all that.
For more information on the status of my current projects and general updates you can find me on:
I've also put up a picture of myself and the real Luke Sky as well as the rest of the fam. Hope you all like the new pictures I tried to add!
For anyone who says the name is cheesy, what can I say? It probably is and I published under it anyway, out of love for my boy. For anyone who says the name is completely unrealistic, alas I have the birth certificate to put the lie in such assertions. Sorry guys but there is at least one father out there crazy enough to actually go saddle his kid with such a name and as a result there really is a living breathing Luke Sky Wachter! He's just not me. hehehehe But some day he'll be able to look back at what his dad has done and know I was proud enough to use his name.
An excellent sequel to Admiral's Nemesis, with overwhelming enemy forces moving in to Sectors. We see the Little Admiral having to face forces both within his side, as well as the Empire. Can he once again come out on top? We know that he has a few members that have been with him from the start and they will be there at the end, but will it be enough. I think that he will have more battles to face if he cam come out on top once again. Great read.
These are always good, never disappointing, always plenty of laughs, good action, intrigue, never really know what's going to happen next, I don't know who reads a review for like the twelfth book in a series but if you're familiar with the series you know exactly what you're in store for and if you haven't go get the first one in the series and enjoy the ride.
This was a great book. I loved the satire and irony. The little admiral's enemies were outstanding bad guys. Spaulding proved the Calvary saving the day again. I wish that I could read the next book now. Super book and I could not put it down. Good battle scenes. No good deed goes unpunished for the little admiral.
The Spineward Sectors has long been one of my favourite guilty pleasures when it comes to space opera/mil-scifi genre. It never had the greatest worldbuilding or most amazing plots but compensated for its weaknesses with humour and an entertaining cast. In short it was the B-movie version of a sci-fi book.
However in my opinion the series is slowly but surely losing its charm. Characters that were once interesting and entertaining either suffering from the fact that far too little character development is happening (with some characters even seemingly regressing) or worse that characters become increasingly one-dimensional and boring. The plot of the various books has become so similar that the last four or five books are practically the same story told again and again with only minimal cosmetic changes - overwhelming opponent, meddling allies/politicians and in the end a miraculous victory thanks to the latest deus-ex-machina. This is not helped by the fact that very little time has passed between the various books (~5 years) while the scale of the conflict has escalated dramatically. Some change is sorely needed though the last book and its disastrous handling of politics/non action stuff sadly make it clear that such an action isn't without its problems either.
Despite all that I would still have given the book three stars and viewed it as an okay successor to a long running series. The reason I don't is due to the fact that author seems not incapable of not including his own political opinions, which mostly seem your typical populist, slightly alt-right stuff, in the book but also utterly fails at properly integrating them into the narrative, resulting in parts of the story assembling rants on Fox news more than anything else. Some of that was of course always present in the narrative, the whole royals vs. parliamentarians or many of the fringe worlds and their ideologies, but tempered with humour and a level of absurdity that either has long worn out or misses completely in the newer additions. Stuff like the jokes about "safe spaces" or "universal healthcare" are really doing the book no favour. It isn't yet of the level of somebody like Kratman but it sometimes certainly feels like reading a dumber version of a later Honor Harrington book. I mean I have nothing against the inclusion of political themes in a book indeed I think that sci-fi and fantasy has a long and proud history of doing so but not like this. I had hoped that the fantasy series, which was plagued by exactly the same problems, would have taught the author the need of handling this with a bit more flair and skill but it sadly seems I was mistaken.
Let me start by saying I still really enjoy the series. This reason I have it two stars is all the worthless extras added in to make the book longer. Giving us 2 pages here of an unimport scout captains report here and another one there.. very few authors write from multiply view points successfully. This author isn't one of them.
While it would have been better to be able to read the entire series, one book after the other, I realize that isn't reasonable; when you're a prolific si/fi reader you tend to loose a bit of continuity. That being said it was a GREAT SERIES and I wouldn't be surprised if we haven't seen the last of the 'Little Admiral '.
The Little Admiral wasn't in time to save two systems from being captured by the Empire, but he did retake one. How will he stop the colossal fleet arrayed against him as he defends the sector from invasion? I like the action, humor, and political intrigue. I look forward to the next book.
Mistakes: To many to keep track of. Do you bother to edit? Plot: Politics and battles. The politics are over the top and silly in the middle of battle. Characters: Well there are a lot of them. 5/10
