In this gripping short story from the author of Pretty Wicked and Wicked Fallout, sweet twenty-one-year-old Abigail Preston lives a life she never dreamed of, not even in her darkest nightmares.

Abigail is not allowed to leave the motel grounds except for church on Sundays and the occasional run to the market. Living in the middle of nowhere where she runs a shabby motel is not the life she imagined. Her only source of excitement is waiting for the odd car to turn up every few weeks. And Abigail counts on these visitors.

The couples, the families, and the women get to leave.

The single men aren't that lucky.

Starting Red I immediately started to feel my anxiety raise. Abigail gave me such an over whelming feeling of unease. That feeling quickly increased to panic and terror. When reading you can't just simply cover your eyes during a scary part like you can during a movie. I found myself terrified to go on but yet needing to know how it ends.

Red kept me on the edge of me set and my heart pounding so hard, as if it was trying to leap right out of my chest.

Red certainly packs a haunting punch and will leave you completely filled with jitters. How it is even possible to deliver this much horror in a merely 51 pages is astounding!

Kelly's writing will inject your brain will all sorts of new fears!

If your love is psychological thrillers, Kelly will easily become a new favorite.

A perfect read for around the Halloween season especially, if you are into that seasonal reading.

Enjoy!

And of course thank you all for reading.

"Red" is a short story by Canadian independent thriller-fantasy author, Kelly Charron, and I received an e-book copy of the short story from the author herself, in exchange for an honest review.

The story of "Red" follows 21-year-old Abigail, who lives with her deeply religious, heavy-handed father, and who must follow the rules of being "a good, Christian girl." When we first meet her, she is getting ready and painting red lipstick on her lips to attempt to interest any man who might stop by the motel she and her father own, on a desolate stretch of highway in the middle of nowhere.

The unfortunate guest this evening is a man named, Jessie. And he sparks a desire in Abigail that hasn't been present before with any other man who has stopped by the motel. The desire goes against everything Abigail has been taught, and when the night goes horribly awry, Abigail must decide if she's willing to continue being her father's perfect daughter, with Jessie's fate hanging in the balance.

This was a short, but absolutely brilliant read! From the moment we first meet Abigail, the unease begins to set in. And as the story continues, that unease evolves into panic and then terror at what is unfolding. The story ended up taking a turn that I didn't initially expect, and managed to surprise me as well. I was absolutely on the edge of my seat, with my heart pounding as I read, and that Kelly Charron was able to make me feel such a full spectrum of emotion in such a limited number of pages is a testament to her immense talent as a writer.

I absolutely recommended this short story! It's a quick, engaging, but uneasy read. There's something very haunting about it, and it will definitely linger for quite a while. And as if you need any more encouragement to read this, the e-book also contains the first 3 chapters of Kelly's 2016 debut novel, "Pretty Wicked," which I've already read, but it was a pleasant surprise to see a teaser of it included.

If you're looking to start reading Kelly's work, this is definitely a good one to start with. Between the short story, and the included chapters of "Pretty Wicked," you'll definitely be clamoring for more!

Thanks to Kelly (K.M.) Charron for sending this short story to me for review!
