I'm an author and Louisiana native living in Texas with my husband, three smalls and a big doofus dog. I have lived in Spain, hiked the Teton Mountains, honeymooned in Scotland, ridden in competition rodeo and am the great great granddaughter of a Nicaraguan president. I also hate doing laundry and refuse to iron anything.

I've loved storytelling since forever. I published my first short story with Amber Quill Press and have since written several other tales. A love of the bad boy in fiction always inspires me.

Can I get a collective, contemplative and worshipping "AWWWWWW"

*dreamy sigh*

This is it. The cutest little novella I've ever read.
It's so short, short short short, too short!
But probably that's why I loved it.
It yields a powerful punch, in its shortness you get the explosive writing talent that is Grace Draven, so smooth, so engaging.
And it packs such important themes of acceptance and self-respect, love and patience, strenght and family.

"I wish it was longer", said every reader at the end of a book they loved.
I really do.

I want to hug this book close to my chest and dance with it, to music in my head.

Yes, like a true drunk person.
Because this book has left me drunk on the butterflies that have taken hostage of my stomach.

Pure, sweet, what Romance is supposed to be like.
A scarred young woman, an attentive, cherishing, strong and sweet gentleman.
You don't need much more.
No instalove, just a slowly burning feeling, that takes over after years of patience and yearning.
Truly, perfection.

I adored Jahna, unique heroines make my heart skip a beat. Add to that that she is an amazing girl, passionate, smart, a bit clumsy, excited about the most little things: she is beautiful on the inside, and on the outside too, but only to those who are clever enough to go beyond a little insignificant scarring.

Our hero is clever all right.
Sir Radimar is like the younger and cooler version of the kung fu master in Kung Fu Panda .
And taller, waaay taller.
This comparison may not make sense to you, but it goes to explain the subtle wisdom and intelligence that lurks under Radimar's aura.
He is a swordmaster and an exceptional teacher. He's been contracted by Jahna's father to teach Sodrin, Jahna's brother, the art of the sword, so that he can train him and make him stronger.
Sweet, enigmatic and a just man, I loved him from the very second he's introduced.
He is not one of those stunning beauties we often read about, he has a subtle beauty, amazing green eyes and fiery red hair.
He isn't the usual hero and I loved it.
A serious, concentrated teacher one second, a teasing-eyes-glimmering-with-mischief the next.

If age gaps usually bother you, worry not.
The age difference between Jahna and Radimar is 7 years. No biggie, really.

And yes, it's as sweet as it sounds.

“He was not a bard blessed with the ability to fashion words into gems that sparkled, but he was honest, he was forthright, and he loved this woman with every thread of his being.”

This story is much too short for my liking.....

I love how Grace Draven writes character growth. In this book, she starts with a 15 year old girl in the nobility who's shy and belittled because of a birthmark and follows her through the years as she finds her footing, has her confidence and skills bolstered, and ends a more secure woman with a fulfilling career as a chronicler. Yes, this is a romance, but it's more a story about Jahna (h) with Radimar (H) offering support and eventually love. I loved both of these characters so much. Even Jahna's older brother, who Radimar is hired to tutor in sword fighting, shows growth. This shorter story spans several years so there are multiple time jumps and there is an 8 year separation. Written in third person, dual POV. No ow/om drama and h is a virgin but H is not (no details given of his history except h's brother makes one comment that the H also taught him how to woo women but he's never shown with anyone over the years).

I was swept into this story, which is character-driven with a small amount of action (that is graphically violent). The details are amazing with scenes of court life and fight training. Poor Jahna is bullied because of her appearance and her initial reaction is flight instead of fight. Radimar saves her at their first meeting and he helps her learn how to be able to save herself (yes, there is a scene where she does and it's glorious). He's a good man and very protective. Jahna's so young when she and Radimar first meet (he's 7 years older I think) and their initial relationship is one that's kind, encouraging and supportive. It gradually shifts to deeper feelings and tension for both of them and they share one kiss before their separation (Radimar explains later why nothing more could have happened between them then and it does make sense). I do think the separation could have been shorter, but once they see each other again, they communicate, there's one steamy scene, and they're headed into their HEA so no more dilly-dallying.

I wish there had been an epilogue but even without one, I felt fulfilled at the end of the story. As a note - this is a standalone but does contain spoilers for the first two Wraith Kings books as the events of those books are told to Jahna in a cameo scene by a familiar face.

A cute story about a girl with an unfortunate birth mark and the swordsman who saw the woman she would become.
Honestly, nothing much happens and i didn't mind as the characters were enough. But the 8 yr long separation kinda killed the romance for me.
There was no need for the separation to be so long and for him to have had no contact with her for that entire time.
When he left she was still a bit too young at 18 (he was 6 or 7 years older), but he was already in love with her.

I enjoyed the world building as usual.

Safety is pretty good i hope.

This was a lovely, slow burn romance, though perhaps a bit too slow, with extraneous characters thrown in and an inordinately long road to the HEA. Still, it’s a Grace Draven story so it was satisfying nonetheless.

Sweet sweet Story. They meet when she's young and timid. Marked on her face since birth, she hides in the shadows even as tormenters seek her like prey. Then he comes into her life. He's actually there to teach her brother to fight, but he also teaches her how to stand her ground. And she falls in love.

However he's of lower birth and sworn to a brotherhood of swords. So he leaves her never to forget their one passionate kiss.

Years later she's achieved almost every goal and desire for her life - but has never forgotten the one thing she cannot have. When she sees him across the market hope rises anew that maybe she will dance with him again in their winter garden.

I love Grace Draven's short stories and I'm eagerly awaiting her next longer novel!

This is a short fantasy romance novella after Eidolon in the Wraith Kings series.
It is centered around Jahna and the talented swordsman her father hired to train her brother, Radimar. Jahna has been ostracised by the court and high society due to a purple birthmark on one side of her face. Radimar is the first person, except for her family, who accepts her for who she is on the inside and outside. He makes her feel cherished. Each chapter has a time-jump, so it takes many years for these two to get together. But once they do, the dam finally breaks and sparks fly between them.

I loved this! I just honestly wish it was a full-length novel!
All the relationships were amazing to me! I loved Jahna and Radimar, Jahna and her family, and Radimar's relationship with her family.

I am just loving Grace. Her books just make me happy! I love her deep feeling characters. I love how she writes a love story. This was so sweet and deep. I loved how much you felt in this novella.
This would be R for a sex scene and some F words and sexual crude inuendo by a couple of jerks who regret it:}

*** 3 STARS ***

In The Darkest Midnight is a very cute and sweet novella with a slow burn romance. It is set after the events in Eidolon so I would recommend to read it afterwards, as there are a few spoilers.

I quite enjoyed this novella and I really liked the main female character, Jahna. She has a birthmark on one side of her face and people treated her badly because of it, awakening a protective feeling on me. I loved how Radimar didn’t care about this and saw her real beauty. Their relationship grew from friendship to something else and it was just so sweet from the beginning, the way he cared about her and how he helped her to discover her strength inside. I didn’t like how some of the things were executed though because it gave a feeling of rushing towards the end after the slow burn in most of the book. This is a pity because, until one point, I was sure it was going to be at least a 4 stars read.

Overall I enjoyed it and I recommend this novella if you enjoy cute and slow-burn romance.

This is a 0.5 novella I picked up this past December as I was trying to pad my total books read so I could hit my GR Reading Challenge goal. It turns out I didn't need to read it then so I'm circling back around now because there is supposed to be another book in the Wraith Kings Series in which this novella is set. Unfortunately, the fourth book, Black Hellebore, has been pulled off of Amazon. More unfortunately, I think it is because Draven is in the midst of battling cancer.

Grace Draven is one of the best fantasy romance writers in the biz. If you enjoy her writing and are so inclined, you can find a GoFundMe page to offer support. More importantly, if you are so included, keep Grace in your thoughts and prayers.

A short little novella that was well on its way to being a 5 Star for me, but I will end up settling for a 4 Star.

This is a story about Jahna, young royal girl who is looked upon differently because of how she looks and Radimer, a swordsman that sees past what makes her different.

This is a short story so I don’t want to go too much into a review and spoil it since there isn’t a whole lot to tell.

I will say that I loved absolutely everything about this book until we got to the climax. Everything was running smoothly, I was liking where we were going, the characters were connecting and growing, everything was flowing good, and then the climax happened.... and everything slowed down. Maybe it’s just me but that slow down was like a train wreak for me, it’s like I all of a sudden didn’t care. I mean I knew what was going to happen anyways (there is almost always a HEA). My train wreaked so bad that I rolled my eyes at the ending just because we knew it was inevitable, and the previous 40 pages we read felt like they were for nothing. The only thing good that happened between the wreak and the ending was the reference/crossover to the Wraith King’s. But even that couldn’t peak my interest enough to avoid skimming some of. Bad placement I think, if it was at the beginning I would have gobbled that shit up.

Anyways I’m still a loyal Grace Draven fan and am even more excited for the next Wrath Kings.

4.0 - 4.5 ***

I was in the mood for a good fantasy and IMO no one writes a good slow fantasy romance like Grace Draven.

This was a novella and perfect for an evening read.

Jahna was born with a port wine birthmark on her face. Her entire life she's been ridiculed or ignored. Radimer is a swordmaster hired to teach Jahna's brother. They fall in love but neither does anything about it. Jahna is still very young and Radimer is paid to train her brother. It was a sweet winter story and I liked that the story that spanned several years. I liked how the story of the galla and the Wraith Kings was incorporated into the plot.

Cute novella taken place in the same world as Wraith Kings.

Jahna has a birthmark on her face that makes girls her age bully her and other people avoiding her gaze. She's the daughter of a rich nobleman whose dream is to become a scribe.

Radimar is adopted and trained by a group of famous swordsman and comes to Jahna's family's home to train her brother. He promises to teach her how to fight back.

Their love story was really cute and touching. I love that Radimar never notices her birthmark after the first time he saw it and is her biggest advocate. He defends her honor without her even knowing it! I also love the relationship Jahna has with her brother. It's realistic in that they tease each other but are extremely protective of her.

Overall, a good short read after Wraith Kings.

A slow and beautiful love story

Grace Draven is so good at world building that you feel like you are in the book.

Stupid reality kept pulling me back out.

This is a really good plot and well written love story of a young girl who has a large birthmark on her face and a swordsman who sees past it to her courage and heart.

All the feels are here, her struggles with bullying and self doubt. The love of her family and social stigmas. The friendship and then love of a steadfast man.

My only complaint is that it was too short. Bummer for me. But what a good read. The best one I’ve read in a while.

Grace Draven has written another beautiful story. Ms. Draven's writing talent still shines bright even in this short novella. The characters were not only likeable but also believable, and the pace and writing details were perfection. The story of Jahna and Radimar was a nice, slow burn romance that felt complete by the end. I'm a huge fan of the Wraith Kings series, so it was nice to see what was happening with the world between books 2 and 3. There's even a nice cameo with a character from Eidolon. Now to anxiously wait for The Ippos King to be published!

This was a cute novella. It expanded on the Wraith Kings world and told the story of Jahna, a young girl who dreams of growing up and becoming a scribe.

Jahna was born with a birthmark causing her to be the object of ridicule among her peers. When a handsome young swordsman is hired to tutor her brother, Jahna finds herself learning just as much from him. Unfortunately he is recalled to his home, and there is a fairly significant time-skip. Eventually they are reunited and the happily-ever-after takes place.

As a heads up, the kindle edition I read had quite a few typos.

Loved it! The hero was so sweet!

“How did he do it? Clarify the chaos of her thoughts without coddling her? Even when he questioned the soundness of her timing, it sprang only from concern for her welfare, never from doubt in her judgment.”

This was a mutual pining love story spanning multiple years.

I liked how self possessed the heroine was. This was great! Definitely can be read as a stand-alone, since the focus is very much on the couple and not any series plot.

A must read.

Two characters and destiny. An intelligent, generous, loving girl, hampered by a birthmark on her face that draws ridicule and heartache from those around her. A swordsman, hired to train her adoring brother, at first her protector, and then the keeper of her heart. Their story is a journey through whimsy and strength, growth and heartbreak. A story to keep in your heart forever:)

Oh how I love Grace Draven's writing. This one was a perfect example of what I love finding in each and every Grace Draven's book. It has soul, it has a plot and characters that draw you in from the very beginning. It may have slightly abnormal characters, because they are flawed, BUT Draven finds her flawed characters matches who have some flaws as well, but they simply fit together like pieces in a puzzle and it's simply pure pleasure to read about their journey of coming together. Slow burn romance at its best.
