Going home with a stranger isn’t sheltered heiress Brooke Goodman’s MO. Neither is falling back into bed with the same sinfully sexy man…or asking him to marry her so she can inherit millions. But now she’s pregnant, and Austin wants to wed for real! Should she trust a man who can promise her his name but not forever?
Janice Maynard came to the writing life early! When her third grade short story, “The Princess and the Robbers”, won a red ribbon in a school arts fair, Janice was hooked. She followed up that early success with a more commercial piece in the sixth grade… “Why My Mom Loves To Drink Coke”. No advance for that one, but she won a six-pack of Coke… remember those great little bottles?
In junior high Janice began circulating her work to a wider audience. A dozen or so notebook pages stapled together made the rounds in some particularly boring classes, with the riveting tales carefully hidden behind textbooks.
High school meant the big time… editor of the school newspaper, the Maroon and White. Janice used her insightful editorials to delve into such meaty subjects as “locker room odor” and “why we need two-ply tissue in the student bathrooms”.
College brought lots of writing, but very little of it creative… four years later, Janice stepped into the adult world as a fully certified elementary teacher.
Despite motherhood, full-time employment, and keeping up with an “always into something” husband, Janice never lost her love of writing or the desire to be published. In 1996 she realized her long-time dream when Kensington Publishing bought her first book, Sweetheart. That exciting moment was followed by the sales of two more books in the Precious Gem line.
In the fall of 2002, Janice left the classroom to pursue writing full-time.
Million Dollar Baby by Janice Maynard is the third book in Harlequin Desire’s Texas Cattleman’s Club: Bachelor Auction series. I absolutely loved this book. From the opening pages I knew this was going to be a special book.
Austin Bradshaw has gone through a terrible tragedy and is doing his best to recover. A wanderer who realizes he needs to settle down and make a go of his life meets Brooke Goodman in a bar. Both feel an immediate attraction and settle on a one-night stand. Brooke walks out in the early morning believing she’ll never see Austin again.
When Austin agrees to working on a project at the Texas Cattleman’s Club, he never dreams of running into Brooke. Brooke can’t find a ‘real’ job due to her parents’ interference and has been hired by her best friend to paint murals at the Club. She has goals but needs her inheritance to achieve them. The problem is she must marry or wait until she turns thirty to gain access to her millions.
As she and Austin grow closer, she decides to propose marriage as a way to receive her inheritance and make her dreams come true. Of course, their one night has repercussions and along the way Austin continues to deal with his past. Will they marry? Will Austin put his past aside and move forward with Brooke?
Million Dollar Baby is a delightful read that I read in one sitting. I highly recommend this book along with all of the books in the Texas Cattleman’s Club series. I’d like to disclose that I received an advanced copy of this book. This is my honest review.
Million Dollar Baby by Janice Maynard is the third installment of the Texas Cattleman's Club Bachelor Auction series. I love how neither Brooke or Austin where looking for Love yet they found it in this book. This started with an instant attraction that led to a one night stand. Neither of them had time or was in the right state of mind for more. Brooke and Austin fought the attraction they felt for each other right up till neither of them could fight it anymore. They both knew all along something more was under the radar. Just neither wanted to face it. This book was very well wrote and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Janice Maynard is on my auto-buy list for a reason. Her work is always spot-on. The romance is sharp, but fun, the characters intriguing and I know I’ll have a good time while reading. This book was no slouch. I couldn’t put it down and stayed up past bedtime to finish it. I got emotionally involved with the characters, too. That’s a sign of a good book if it ropes me in long after the last page.
Brooke could be written in a snobby manner, but Ms. Maynard gives the heiress a much more human quality. I liked her right away. She has dreams and doesn’t want to be sheltered. I gave her props for wanting to break free. I could also understand her struggles with her family. Kudos to the author for making me feel for her and want to conk the parents on the head. Then there’s Austin. Oh, boy! A cowboy who wants to make good, even if he’s not sure how. I liked that he was broken in his own manner. I rooted for these two to get together and make things work.
If you’re looking for a book that’s sweet, saucy and will stick with you long after the end, then this is one to check out.
Janice Maynard: you continue to slay me. Never ever could I get enough of your amazing books!
Million Dollar Baby is a part of Harlequin Desire’s Texas Cattleman’s Club series, though you don’t need to be up to date on that series to enjoy the book. In this story we follow Brooke and Austin as they have a one night stand that leads to a pregnancy. Oh man I love a good pregnancy romance! So, Brooke and Austin have their one night and go their separate ways. They run into each other again a few months later and rekindle their friendship/fling only to quickly find out that Brooke is expecting. From there, they decide to get married in order for Brooke to obtain her inheritance and they attempt to figure out how they can raise the baby together. Sound crazy? Of course it does, but it makes for an awesome book :)
Austin is a widower so his exploration of what a relationship could look like a second time around, coupled with his desire to care of Brooke, really made this book really sweet. Brooke’s parents are absolutely heinous throughout the novel; which provided a much needed contrast to all the civility and tenderness Brooke and Austin were so fond of producing.
This book is uber charming and a super quick read. It’s perfect for my fellow pregnancy/secret baby romance lovers and anyone who needs a jolt of romance in their life. 4 stars for Million Dollar Baby by Janice Maynard.

Fast forward to Brooke working on her mural at the Club and she hears Austin's voice and is thrown for a loop! Than lots start happening that bring them together but tear them apart. “Million Dollar Baby” by Janice Maynard is the third installment of Texas Cattleman’s Club: Bachelor Auction. Though it can be read without reading the others, you’ll probably want to so you’ll get the whole TCC experience.
Brooke Goodman decides stepping out of her comfort zone is what she needs. At twenty-six, her life is ruled by her mother and she isn’t allowed to chase her dreams of opening an art center in Royal. She goes to a bar in another town and sees Austin Bradshaw and takes a risk by approaching him. Austin, having lost his wife years before, isn’t prepared when fresh-faced and naive Brooke propositions him. She brings light to the darkness he’s been living in.
They have their one night together, thinking it’s the end. Until Austin shows up in Royal to do a job at TCC—where Brooke is also working. Their attraction is too strong to resist and they agree to see each other with the condition there will be no relationship. Of course, that plan falls apart.
“Million Dollar Baby” has its sexy and emotional moments, with glimpses into characters that will appear in upcoming books. While I enjoyed the book as a whole, the last third didn’t flow as smoothly as the beginning and the writing almost seemed hurried. With that being said, Ms. Maynard continues to be a popular author in the TCC world.
I was hooked from the first scene! An adorable connection, burning passion and a familiar setting makes for a very enjoyable book! The few parts about the other families in town felt somewhat disjointed in the flow of the story, but overall, a quick read with easy to like characters, and a great happily ever after!
It was only supposed to be one night. Brooke Goodman was tired of living her life for other people and decide to cut loose and go pick up a man from the bar. No names, no histories ... just one night of anonymous passion. That was the plan at least ... until he showed up in her town a few weeks later ... just before she realized she's pregnant!
Austin Bradshaw is in Royal, TX for a short-term job and never expects to see his one night beauty there. They quickly re-establish their attraction to each other and begin getting to know the other person. He has a past that holds him back, and she has a dream she can't yet fulfill. When the idea of asking him to marry her temporarily so she can gain her inheritance comes to mind, she blurts it out without warning. He's extremely gun shy about it ... until they realize she's pregnant from their first night together!
Million Dollar Baby by Janice Maynard is the third installment of the Texas Cattleman’s Club series. Brooke Goodman is the daughter of a prominent Royal, Texas family. She is tired of living under the pressures of her family and wants to strike out on her own, but her mom is always ruining any opportunities that arise. Brooke decides to live on the wild side and has a one night stand with someone in a different town. Months later, this person reappears in Brooke's life. Austin Bradshaw, a widower, shows up at Brooke's current workplace to do some work of his own. Brooke and Austin connect and their relationship develops into something more. Will Brooke and Austin be able to put their pasts behind them and start their lives together? I did receive an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
Million Dollar Baby is the third book in the newest Texas Cattleman’s Club series. Is the first book in a long time that I found that when I got into the plot I had a hard time putting it down. Brooke Goodman is the daughter of one of Royal Texas’ rich. She is not living up to her parents’ rules and has decided to go out on her own. She needs her grandmother’s trust fund to help her set up an art school. In order to get the money she must wait until she is 30 or get married. Enter Austin Bradshaw a widower for 6 years who is pushed by his sister to start living! Brooke and Austin connect and what starts as one night together develops into something more.
Absolutely fantastic super quick read because of excellent story& the widow & pregnancy troupe! Gets me all the time ! And talk about a sure fire quick witted beginning to this one in the bar HOW they meet! She’s a wealthy fun loving gal with a horrific nasty mama so that drama is not to be missed . I’ll say that Brooke & Adams HEA IS literally happening at the last seconds & closes on some mighty high passionate notes which are big wins for moi! Excellent once again from our lovely Janice !
I had mixed feelings about this book. I was starting to put it to 3 /4 of the way through. But the ending brought hope so I put it to 4 stars. Brooke was so stomped down by her parents that she was stifled she finally got the nerve to stand up to them. Austin was so against another love relationship after loving and losing love. Finally he came to his senses after almost losing a love he tried so hard to not let happen. True love does win out .
I loved everything about this story and its primary characters, from beginning to end. Austin and Brooke are two extremely sympathetic characters. Both have dealt with hurt and disappointment in their lives. Though neither was looking for love, together they build a brand new start for their little family. A truly wonderful story.
OMG can I just start by saying I loved this book from the first page. I could not put this one down. I love the Texas Callteman's Club books and this one is no different. Strong characters with a back story, good romance storyline and finding love when you aren't even looking is a way to keep me interested. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did.
I enjoyed this book for the most part. I have followed this series somewhat but I thought Janice’s book in the series was good. I guess I should have read more books in the series to really understand this one more, then I probably would have loved the book.
This is the third installment in the Texas Cattlemen’s Club -Bachelor Auction series. It can be read as a stand-alone story but I suggest the entire series as the characters appear in other installments in the series.
Brooke is trying to figure out how to get out from under her domineering mother’s thumb. She decides to take a chance and do something out of her ordinary. In a bar in a nearby town she sees Austin and they end up spending a no-strings night together with the understanding they’ll never see each other again. He’s digging out from under his grief of losing his wife six years before and has vowed to never love again.
Beth sneaks out before Austin wakes and heads home planning to never see Austin again. Until he shows up at the TCC as the architect overseeing the new addition while Brooke is there painting murals. Austin gets to see Brooke’s mother in action and stands up for Brooke who is now more determined than ever to move out of her parents’ house. Especially after she and Austin discover the consequences of their one night together.
I read this book in less than 24 hours. I couldn’t wait to see what happened next and really looked forward to Brooke setting her mother straight and getting on with her life. As is the normal Janice Maynard standard, this book did not disappoint. I ran the gamut of emotions with this book. A great read!
