Rhoades Loneliness. The pain doesn’t simply go away with time. It’s been years, and they tell me I need to move on. But I can’t. Blame and regret are my constant companions. Until I see him in the spotlight and everything changes. Night after night, I watch him dance. Thinking about him. What he’d feel like. What he’d taste like. And now that I know, I want him even more. And maybe…just maybe, he might want me too. But not yet. Not before he knows he’s more than a pretty face. Not before he knows what he means to me. I need him by my side. The two of us. Together.
Austin Why can’t I forget him? His hands touching me. His mouth on mine. Kissing me. Rendering me mindless. Breathless. Every night I lay awake burning for him. Dreaming. Thinking. Needing him. No—I don’t. I don’t need anyone. I lie. I want him. I want more. I am more. He’s seen that, and now here I stand with my dream on the horizon. All I need to do is take that first step. Trust him. Trust myself.
Rhoades begins immediately where Austin, Book one, left off

Rhoades – Undeniable is book one in the Man Up series by Felice Stevens. We first met Rhoades and Austin in the prequel, Austin. Now it’s time for their full story.
Rhoades MacKenzie has all the money he could ever want working in real estate development. But it’s never enough. Because work is all he has. It has been for the last four years since he lost his partner in a tragic accident. But then, one night when he happened to be in Man Up, a club his brother owns, he saw him and the focus of his entire world changed in that moment. For months he sat in the shadows watching him. For months he dreamed of him. When they finally spoke, when they finally touched for the first time, Austin became his.
Austin Poole lives by his own rules. Between a verbally abusive father whose life he is no longer a part of, and an abusive ex, he has vowed to himself that no one will ever have the power to do that again. He has a shell around him that is impenetrable. He knows he tends to see the worst in things but it’s his way of protecting himself. Austin teaches ballet to children by day and is a dancer at Man Up at night. Neither of these jobs, though are his dream. He has always been interested in interior design but knows that it’s only a dream.
For months Austin has tried to ignore the gorgeous man who sits alone and watches him dance. When they finally do touch, things quickly get out of hand and Austin runs. But when Rhoades approaches him with a different offer, and a promise that he’ll keep his hands and lips to himself, Austin knows he has to take it. It could be a dream come true, or the biggest mistake of his life.
“Maybe I’d been wrong all along and love didn’t make you weak but strong. Leaning on a person didn’t mean they’d steal the best part of you, instead, they became the bodyguard to your soul, walking with you every step of the way.”
This was such a sweet story. Both Rhoades and Austin had walled themselves off for different reasons. But when you meet that right person, the one, all those reasons seem to fly right out the window. Rhoades went slowly, understanding that he needed to prove himself to Austin, let him come to him in his own time. Austin had a way of waking Rhoades back up after a four year long sleep. And Rhoades had a way of helping Austin to believe in himself, to reach for his dreams.
This was sweet, sexy, and a little bit angsty. I liked getting to watch the relationship between James (the club owner) and Rhoades improve. And I loved how Austin and Rhoades helped each other to change and grow. The next book in the series, book two, is Austin’s best friend, Frankie’s story in Frankie – Unforgettable.
Only after I finished this book did I realize that there was a prologue of sorts, which makes a lot of sense considering I felt like I started in the middle of a story, with Austin and Rhodes playing at a slow-burn attraction that culminated in a searing kiss.
I'd given up on Felice Stevens, but this story was better developed and the MCs (or one of them at least) more mature than in her earlier work.
I wasn't a big fan of Austin at all; he was just so defensive and quick to jump all over Rhoades for the smallest perceived infraction.
There was also something off about the dialogue; it was too flowery to be real speech.
Nevertheless, the feels were there, and the ending was quite sweet.
Any book which quotes the great playwright Christopher Marlowe is going to the top of my list but when that book is authored by Felice Stevens, I know there's going to be a gorgeous romance to anchor everything else.
Rhodes - Undeniable is exactly that, a gorgeous romance in which one young man learns not every one is always after something and not everyone will hurt you.
Austin is a study in contrasts and it took me a while to warm up to him, especially after the sneak peek we got in his self named short released just a couple of weeks ago.
He's been hurt, both emotionally and physically, and is cynical to a fault. He's also judgemental while being a loyal friend and he slowly wormed his way into my heart.
Rhoades, on the other hand, now he had my heart from the start, especially as more was reveal about just what he'd lost, and I admired his dedication in waiting for Austin to catch up with his feelings.
James fascinates me, and I'm hoping Frankie's story isn't going to be too long behind this one! This is a great new series from Felice with a loose connection to her Breakfast Club novels through Tyler and Marcus.
More please!
#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.
I didn't like either of the two characters to begin with. They were both too unforgiving, and too quick to judge. Rhoades who lost his partner four years ago to a drunk driver is a muti-billionaire land developer that hires Austin, who dances part-time at Man-Up, a dance club, but is studying interior design, to design a building that he plans to open. For several chapters they circle uneasily around one another. Austin had such a negative attitude and seemed to give out mixed signals to Rhoades, but eventually they become more trusting and comfortable with one another. Kale Williams does the narration beautifully, as usual. He does it complete with Rhoades beautiful British accent. The voices really adds to the story and I found that I really liked both Rhoades and Austin a whole lot more. I'm looking forward to the next story in this series.
This story is a super slow burn. Both Austin and Rhoades have baggage and both have closed themselves off from relationships, but neither can deny the strong attraction, although Austin is going to try his hardest
Rhoades just can't help but say the wrong thing or make a wrong move where Austin is concerned, but that's not hard to do when Austin's defenses are always up, waiting for Rhoades to prove that he's no different than the rest of the men like him. Men with money have always used their power to hurt him in the past. Austin is determined to make it on his own and not rely on anyone but himself.
Austin has “trust no one” down to an art form. I understand why, I really do, but damn did that boy frustrate me! There is a lot of push and pull before the men, Austin really, get to a place where they can be together. Rhoades is a sweetheart and shows great patience and an appreciation for Austin’s needs. Rhoades himself is suffering from some survivor's guilt. Austin is the first man he's been drawn to in years and while his independent spirit is a big draw for Rhoades, it's also making it tough to get to know him. Good thing Rhoades is determined.
Austin really makes Rhoades work for the relationship, but once Austin is in he is all in and not afraid to let Rhoades know it! Austin and Rhoades are fantastic when they finally get together. Felice Stevens works her magic again there and I felt the respect, the love and understanding between these two.
I can't wait to get Frankie's story next. I'm already invested and wondering if things will work out for Austin's friend.
Austin is a @$%&%#@#%. He really frustrates me to no end. I wanted to shake him and smack him more times than I could count. This poor boy had been hurt so bad that he ended up labelling every other guy as a villain especially Rhoades. He had a gigantic chip on his shoulder aka a big stick up his arse. I wish there is an actual flashback to his past so that I can feel more sympathy towards him. Despite all that, I know he is a nice person, an ambitious fella that is chasing his dream. But let's be honest here, his flip-floppy attitude towards Rhoades just went on too long.
On the outside, Rhoades is a sexy, successful bachelor who exudes confidence. On the inside, he is a grieving lover who finally found someone that invoke a passion in him. He was attracted to Austin and watches him for months. Despite Austin blatantly telling him to shoo away, Rhoades is still there. I have a hard time believing Rhoades dedication towards a go go dancer that he didn't fully understand. Is it because the more Austin pushes him away, the more he wants him? Rhoades is just way too good and understanding. I actually admire the way he is so patient waiting for Austin. However, I found it weird that everyone around Rhoades was interested in his sex life or lack there of. There were his butler, driver, stepbrother, ex-lover and a random stranger at the store. What's up with that?
5 stars for the audiobook! It was my first audiobook and Kale Williams made the experience delightful. 😍
4 stars for the story! I liked it but I felt like it lacked a bit of angst. Austin and Rhoades (?? I thought it was Rhodes like the Greek island! LMAO. Apparently not.) were pretty sweet. It just took them so much time to get together. HOWEVER, I'm so freaking curious about James and Malcolm's story! There was just one scene in the book with these two and OMG I just need to know! I'm gonna skip all the books in between and read James' story straight away. The audible is not out though. *sigh*
I will start by telling you I read and reviewed Austin, the short story leading up to this book. It was there I fell head over heels over both Austin and Rhoades. I got a taste of their personalities and the story started to scratch the surface of what made them the men they are. Anyway, I mention this because I feel you must read Austin before you begin to read Rhoades. There is some exposition at the beginning of this book, and I suppose you wouldn’t be lost, but it would help you really experience the magic between Rhoades and Austin.
I found both men to be compelling. Both were damaged. Their fathers were complete bastards. Rhoades’ partner was killed by a car. Austin’s ex was a controlling loser, and both were afraid to commit to another person. Rhoades’ wealth contributed a large part as well. Austin had issues with it because he thought Rhoades believed he would let him do whatever he wanted because he was rich.
3.5 ⭐'s, I listened to this on audio/scribd and really enjoyed the narrator Kale Williams. The person who really made the book for me was Rhoades who was persistent and patient in his pursuit of Austin who annoyed me more than anything. He had such a negative attitude and seemed to give out mixed signals to Rhoades, I'm just glad he finally realized what was right in front of him!!! I just wish Rhoades and James had more of a close relationship, I'm looking forward to James's story so I'm sure more things will fall into place. On to the next book in this series, sweet forgiving Frankie.
This is the first book of Man Up series. Man Up is a dance club owned by James, who's I believe will have his own story in the future. You need to read the prequel to this series though, to get to know Austin, Rhoades (in a glace), James, Frankie, and the dancer boys from the club. Read Austin, I'm pretty sure you'll love Austin.
In Austin, we knew that how mysterious Rhoades were when it comes to Austin. Yeah he had a secret, and Austin been hurt before, you know, the classics. But Felice Stevens has her way with words and always makes me wants more and more. Rhoades is a captivating, sexy, seductive romance. I was blown away by how Rhoades in my head, almost like a spider, patiently waiting for his prey to get caught. But Austin is never an easy catch. He's a fighter, and he chose carefully. This is a very slow burn and I understood why. Austin need to be cautious about Rhoades motives pursuing him. I loved the way Rhodes taking care of Austin without Austin realized that :) Drove him to pursue his dreams and facilitate that, and Austin's just too happy to realized that hahaha... I loved that friendship between Austin and Frankie is unconditional after all, and that Austin finally is the one who made Rhoades relationship with his brother better.
I believe Frankie would be in the second installment of the series. The king of Man Up, need his own HEA after all. And as for Austin and Rhoades, I'm pretty sure we'll see them in the near future again! And again!
And as for the cover, Felice and Reese Dante nailed it! Rhoades is 'perfection!'
A sweet slow burn romance. Low on angst, higher on frustration! Rhoades appears to have it all and yet he’s really the shell of the man that he was. Austin carries the biggest chip on his shoulder and is certainly judgmental when it comes to money or second chances. I did enjoy this book and no doubt will check out the next one 😊
It was ok. I spent so much time disliking Austin that I never really got into the story. He was just such a jerk and treated his friend Freddy exactly like he didn’t want anyone to treat him. I wanted Rhoades to tell him to take a hike.
Not my favourite Felice Stevens' story; Rhoades was a sweetie (although I didn't understand why it took him so long to tell Austin , but Austin was so prickly and judgemental for too long.
Kale Williams' narration was excellent though - his English accent was (barring a few teeny, tiny slips) superb.
This was a lovely follow up to the novella we got introducing us to Austin – not just a dancer in Man Up – and the mystery man who fancies him. We got a good build up with Austin and, the now named, Rhoades with their flirting and then the passion that exploded in the private room. But now, with this book we get a steady slow burn to their relationship that lends well to their romance.
I loved that we got Rhoades POV in this one because I was so interested in him. We got glimpses of his demeanor through Austin but I wanted to know Rhoades and I wanted to see Austin through his eyes.
I admit I was expecting these two to give in a heck of a lot faster than they did but I really enjoyed the slow burn. I loved that Rhoades, with all his hot and passionate want for Austin, was able to truly listen to what Austin was saying and do as he asked. He is a true gentleman and his backstory is heartbreaking. To know how long he has been alone was enough to make him a gem in my eyes but I fell hard for him as he fell for Austin.
Austin, goodness boy are you a stubborn one. I get it, you are guarding everything that you are and that you have but sometimes I wanted to smack you upside the head the way any good mother would. Rhoades never once exhibited what you kept accusing you of an while I can admire you standing up for yourself, you kinda did it way to much when it came to Rhoades.
For me, the slow burn was so slow that when we finally get them together, the payoff wasn’t as satisfying. I think I was just over Austin putting up so many walls and being so damn wishy washy when it came to Rhoades. You can’t tell the dude to stay away and then pout when he does. You can’t tell him to not touch you but maul him if he breathes the same air as you do. The fight on Austin’s end of the attraction wore me down and I was ready for their HEA. I am happy they got it but that was exhausting.
I will say though, Frankie and Aaron have me intrigued. I am a sucker for the redeemable asshole and I think that describes Aaron but also doesn’t scratch the surface. Frankie deserves a prince and I hope he gets it.
Ok. So this was like the best book. After reading Austin, I was so ready for this book and I was not disappointed. My only issue with this book is I'm so worried for Frankie :( . I'm so attached to him as well. So I need more of Frankie please lol.
This picks up where Austin left off. Rhoades is trying so hard to restrain himself for Austin's sake. But the kiss they shared has left him hungry for more. He wants Austin with everything he is. But Rhoades knows something has happened in Austin's past to make him so wary and untrusting. And he has to play it slow and safe. To distract himself, he's hired Austin to do some design jobs for him after seeing some sketches he's drawn. Austin knows this is the dream of a lifetime. But he can't get past that Rhoades has to want something more. No one ever wants something for nothing. He's learned that from his past. So Rhoades has to prove that he's not a lech like the men Austin has encountered and Austin has to learn not everyone wants something and not everyone is out to hurt you. But can they learn before it's too late?
Man I empathize with Austin so much. When you've been hurt badly in life, it's hard to let go of those walls to let someone in. It always seems like there is an ulterior motive, even when that's far from true. Yes, Rhoades wants Austin with a passion he's not felt in years. If ever. But he's not willing to risk what strenuous relationship they have for it. If what you can call they have a relationship. Austin puts the brakes on at every turn. Learning how to trust is extremely hard and it takes such courage to let that part of yourself go and be open. Austin had to go through a lot to realize he could trust Rhoades. He had to admit to himself how he really felt. And then take a good hard look at himself and reevaluate. And that's never an easy lesson. Rhoades journey was no less easy. He has been feeling guilt over things that had happened to him. And he had to admit to himself how he really felt about Austin. And he had to learn how to let go and love again.
The journey to a good relationship is not always about sex. It's about the journey. Each person comes with a load of baggage that the other person has to overcome. And in order to have a good relationship, each person has to learn how to get rid of a lot of that baggage and move on. Not be weighed down by it. Not let other people dictate your happiness. It's a hard lesson. And takes time. But if it's worth it, then time flies by.
Get this book. Get this series. (And please hurry with more about Frankie lol).
He made it hard for me to love him, but that’s how I knew I had to love him harder. With everything I had.
The story begin right after what happen in Austin's book and I must admit, with all the giddy feeling that left from the high tensions that happen in Austin's book, Rhoades story didn't need lots 'warm up' to start because the vibes still there...
With dual POV, now we can also know what's in Rhoades minds, and that's what makes the story become MORE interesting and no doubt hot and high sexual innuendo that come from both characters push and pull is another things that made this book very consuming to the last page!
Rhoades patience and his persistent in luring Austin into his arms by playing smooth cat and mouse game are amazing. His push and pull seduction and at the same time also give Austin space to support and enhance him to pursue his dream had made Austin slowly lower his guards. But Austin with his serious trust issues and tortured past wasn't that easy to touch or...conquered. And if Rhoades didn't play his cards very well, he'll lose Austin forever...
Both characters have their traumas and secrets, and they also have to deal with their own ghost from the past. And fate made them meet to heal each other in uniquely amazing way.
Definitely another a MUST and highly recommended from Felice Stevens. Make sure you don't miss it!
And NOW I'm completely READY for Frankie's story!!!
*ARC is kindly provided by the Author in exchange of a fair, unbiased and honest review*
I was very lucky to receive an ARC of Rhoades from the author and the below is essentially what I messaged her with upon finishing (with some amendments of the original email for privacy purposes)...
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I loved Austin's spunkiness and fierce independence, and I loved even more getting to observe Rhoades not only break down Austin's barriers, but also his own.
I actually highlighted a couple of what I found to be brilliant nuggets of wisdom! No word of a lie, I rarely, rarely highlight sentences or passages in my books anymore as it's highly unusual anymore for something to really strike me as truly profound, or memorable and I was actually shocked when I highlighted not one, but two, sentences, both from chapter 16! As someone who reads a shit-tonne of books (& let's face it, that's a pretty accurate description of my reading habits), it's a testimony to Felice's writing, creativity and characters that moved me to actually highlight as I did.
Readers are going to love Rhoades & his Austin! I'm really hoping James is next on your list of characters deserving their HEA but get the feeling a certain dancer who's continuing to make poor decisions might get his chance instead... I guess I'll have to wait and see 🙂
***** I definitely recommend this book and strongly encourage you to also purchase its predecessor 'Austin' (which tells the start of the story from Austin's perspective) - 'Rhoades' picks up immediately from Austin's novella. I feel like Felice is really coming into her own in her writing. Yes, she's already a successful and well-known author in this genre, I simply feel like this is a step up, a maturation of style and I really enjoyed it. A recommended read.
Rhoades and Austin were so perfect for each other, I just love them! Such a lovely story of 2 men at crossroads in their lives, who ended up being just what the other needed. I enjoyed the slow burn and how they took their time to really get to know each other. They are both so very different, but true complements. With each of them having things in their pasts that truly affected their outlooks, it wasn't always an easy path for them to find their way towards the other, but it was so worth it in the end. I loved the secondary characters and how important each and every one of them was to the story, and the stories to come.
Rhoades – Undeniable is the first book in the Man Up series, and to understand how the book starts you need to read Austin first. Austin starts the story and Rhoades – Undeniable picks up where it ends, without it you will feel as though you’ve started part-way through the story.
As always, Felice Stevens provided a story that had me hooked. Rhoades – Undeniable may not be my favourite Felice Stevens read, but it had me devouring the book in a single sitting. It had the usual combination of sweet and steam that I love in a Felice Stevens book, leaving me to power through the book in no time at all.
As much as I enjoyed our main characters in this one, I did find myself more interested in the side characters. I’m super curious to see how the other stories play out and will be jumping into them soon. I have high hopes for the rest of the series after this one.
All in all, Rhoades – Undeniable was a great start to the Man Up series.
After the start we got in the first book of this series, Austin, that was such a tease, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this one. I loved getting to go more in depth to see what was behind Austin’s issue with getting close to anyone again, and also getting to see things from Rhoades’s point of view. Like anyone, they both have things from their past still shaping their present and with this story we get to see them both finally begin to move forward again.
I really like that things between Austin and Rhoades move slowly, allowing Austin to prove himself professionally so he doesn’t feel like he’s getting ahead because of a relationship with Rhoades. The pace that’s set allows their relationship to develop at a natural pace, allowing deeper feelings to develop and not letting things be based on just the physical attraction that we all know is constantly sizzling just below the surface (and sometimes breaking through).
I also am intrigued by Frankie and the story that’s being set up for him, that’s one book I’m already hooked for thanks to the glimpses into his life from these books so far. Frankie and his family are a great support for Austin, along with the family who owns the bodega by Austin’s apartment as well as his fellow dancers and boss at Man Up.
I did find that for me, Austin’s repeated pushing back of Rhoades—regardless of his reasoning for it—did make it just a tad more difficult to feel their true connection until very late in the story. That’s probably a “me” thing though since I tend to favor matchups where the characters are continually building intimacy throughout a story rather than holding back as Austin was doing (the emotion feels deeper to me when it’s like that).
In the end, the author’s always engaging writing and the final outcome of Austin and Rhoades’s story still has me rating it 4 stars, and putting it down as a definite recommendation for M/M romance fans. The story is heavier on Austin finding a new path for himself and Rhoades finally realizing he’s ready to move on from the past than on their physical relationship, but there’s still enough steamy times to make this story one for readers 18+ with the adult language and sexual content.
*sigh*
This book is so beautiful, I have no words for it. It made me cry and laugh and angry and everything in between. All those feelings. But most of all it left me with a warm feeling in my heart. Make sure you don’t have anything else planned before you start this book because you won’t be able to put it down. I was captivated from the very first page till the last. Felice Stevens has a way with words that is beyond amazing. I kept highlighting all those beautiful expressions to savor them later. Austin is a pole dancer in a gay club, but he dreams of another future. His passion lays in interior design, and he is very good at it. He is happy doing what he does. He loves his friends but doesn’t have that someone special. He has become a bit jaded and a lot afraid of giving his heart again after being hurt too many times. He is fiercely independent and stubborn. Rhoades is something else, and he might just become that someone special. But Rhoades as well is scared to give his heart. These broken and strong men find their safe have with each other. But before they can be with the other, they first have to find themselves. I can’t say it better than Felice Stevens herself: “By encouraging the freedom to be my complete self, Rhoades had given me the wings to fly.” How beautiful is that? I am sure we’ll read more about these two beautiful men in the next book(s) in the series. I hope these will feature the other interesting characters. Frankie, of course. Austin’s best friend. Cort, the friendly cowboy, and James, Rhoades half brother. There is absolute a story there. We haven’t heard half of his relationship with Rhoades. The novella Austin should be read first as therein you find everything about how Rhoades and Austin met.
This is book one, but there is a book #0.5 that should be read and/or listened to before this one. You won’t really miss anything by skipping that book, but it does provide a short intro for this one.
I personally disliked Austin during this book. He annoyed me pretty much the entire time. I understand that he was hurt in the past from previous boyfriends as well as the crap his horrible father put him through. But seriously his pushing Rhoades away constantly for almost this entire book was just too much for me. Rhoades is a good person who just kept showing him over and over again how serious he was, and how much he liked Austin in basically every single thought and action he made. And Austin still pushed him away at every instance. Rhoades is way too good for Austin, but I guess since he gets to pick who his HEA is with, I’ll let my dislike for Austin slide. Overall, this book was good, not my favorite from Felice, but somewhere in the middle of all her books I’ve read. I am extremely curious and a little nervous to see what happens in Frankie’s book. I’ll be checking that one off my list next.
Audio – Kale Williams has a super-hot voice for Rhoades and a totally different voice for Austin. I think that he was able to match up these characters and their voices perfectly. There was no mixing the two up and I was able to follow along with this book pretty easily. I liked this audiobook a lot more than I did for Austin’s #0.5 book. I am happy that the author kept him as the narrator through the first few books of this series so far.
DNF @ 60%!!! The novella/prequel was great, but this book ... UGH, Austin ruined it for me; I just could NOT stand him!! His flip-floppy, ungrateful, "I-don't-need-anyone-least-of-all-the-people-who-are-most-trying-to-help-me" attitude, pissed the fucking HELL out of me!! I get that he got hurt and I am NOT disputing the severity of it, whatever happened to him - I have no clue, but HOLY SHIT, he was a fucking asshole, he was pricklier than a pissed off cactus, and I found absolutely NOTHING redeeming about him!! He was high-handed, prissy, judgemental, and RUDE!! I had NO clue why Rhoades would be even remotely interested in him or why ANYONE liked him for that matter! It seemed EVERYONE paid the price for Austin's shitty father!! Compartmentalize, honey, NOBODY deserves your bullshit because one fucker in your life didn't deserve to be in it!! UGH, I did NOT like Austin and he ruined this book for me!! NO, just NO!! I had SUCH a negative response to Austin, his whiny woe-is-me judgemental bullshit irritated me SO much, I decided this is where I end my experience with this series (at least as long as it follows characters like Austin)!! I had ZERO patience for him, ZERO!! I mean, again, I GET that Austin had a difficult life - keep in mind, by 55% I still wasn't privy to WHAT actually happened - but here's the thing, NO ONE has the right to be such a fucking asshole, and I just found that Austin WAS that much of a fucking asshole!! I couldn't read without wanting to smack him :-/! So yeah, I am DONE!!
I love books about "damaged" characters, those that have been through some sort of tragedy or loss, that come together and learn that their past doesn't necessarily define their future, that support each other and are able to see past the other's flaws to see the men they truly are. This is one of those. I loved the slow burn and the building of the relationship before anything physical happened between the couple. The relationship between Rhoades and James is something that I can't wait to see explored in a later book!
