From New York Times bestselling author Joanne DeMaio comes a novel that knocks on a shabby cottage door, opening to an unforgettable summer.
Every cottage tells a story. It's a saying Jason Barlow returns to as an architect designing New England beach homes. The latest cottage story he hopes to tell rises from the Stony Point sand: the last-standing cottage on the beach. It's the sole survivor--something Jason can relate to--as surrounding cottages washed out to sea in long-ago hurricanes.
The owners aren't budging, though, keeping Jason's proposed renovation at bay. But with some help from the beach friends, the tide turns for Jason's new venture. Problem is, that weathered cottage on the beach? It holds secrets darker than its gray seaworn shingles. And secrets don't stay buried in this little Connecticut beach town; they wash ashore or get dug up from the sand.
Castaway Cottage reunites the beloved Stony Point crew for a surprising summer by the sea, one that will leave you wanting more with the friends by the shore.

Joanne DeMaio is the prolific New York Times bestselling author of The Seaside Saga and other novels. She lives with her family in Connecticut and is currently at work on upcoming books.
We are back in Stony Point and Jason Barlow is trying to nail down his next project for his new cable show. The cottage he has picked out has quite a history, much more than he knew about the place. Now he just needs to get the owners to agree to his plans. Also, a typo on a marriage certificate turns one marriage topsy-turvy. Would a vow renewal ceremony get things back to normal?
This saga continues to draw me in with each new installment. We follow these characters through good times and bad. Through laughter and tears, their lives continue, at times jarring their friendships, and sometimes strengthening them. So much has happened over the course of these stories.
Again Elsa shines as she tries to mother the whole crew through everything. With her inn not yet open she has time to take on another event all while doing her best to help everyone and keep their lives on an even keel. I am anxious for the inn to open, but I don’t know how she is going to be able to handle it all even with Celia’s help.
This cast of characters has to live in one of the most beautiful locations I could ever imagine. I am so envious of the view they see each and every day when they wake up, go through their days and then settle in for the night. Joanne DeMaio’s words have painted every part of this place so clearly, my imagination doesn’t even have to work to virtually take me there. The sea, the sky, the cottages, the diner, the flowers, just everything is crystal clear.
So much is left up in the air as this installment concludes I can hardly wait for the next book to be released. It will be pure joy to return to Stony Point. My virtual bags are already packed.
Joanne DeMaio did it again letting us continue the story with our Beach friends. I can't wait to see what happens next in The Seaside Saga!!! I can't get enough of the beach friends.
Castaway Cottage by Joanne DeMaio Have read the other books in this series so when I got my review copy I cleared my mind and sat down to start in on it. forget dinner, pizza worked and dishes and laundry can wait another day. Starts out with Kyle and Lauren and they are finding the source of the problem on the walls after removing wallpaper. Kyle is sorting through boxes and finds their marriage certificate from almost 10 years when he discovers his name is spelled wrong. He then tells himself he is not married at all and goes to the JP and judge to find out the real solution-they can have a redo of the day. All their friends gather around the pitch in among the other problems they face. Each has their own set of troubles and work things but they are always there for one another. Love the treasures I found in this book=new words and what they mean, Italian phrases, how the book got it's title, and so much more. At times I was laughing out loud, tears running down my face, at other times I was whimpering because I knew they pain they were going through as I had been through it myself. Without friends there they would never make it. Love lessons we learn about the sea and the secrets that have stayed hidden away for decades as they come to light. Thought this was the best book in this series but you can read it as a stand alone and you are brought up to date with whats going on with everyone and their past-just not a lot of the details. Can't wait for the next to find out how they mend things to make it right again. Book is just so descriptive I felt as if I was the one there walking the driftline-didn't know that's what it was called. Beach scenes are described so beautifully and knowing where to find beach bling that is free is just priceless. Author bio and other works by the author are highlighted at the end. Received this review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.
The lure of the sea, the last standing cottage on the beach, the beach crew that make up this story and all those before it sweeps me away once again into the lives, relationships and secrets of their past that haunt them today. This book touches all my senses as if I were right there on the docks hearing the screeching and groaning of the boats as they are swayed by the ropes that tie them, the surge of the waves on the rocks, and smelling the salt air, feeling the warmth of the sun. The beautiful decorations at the inn the night of the wedding vow renewal for Kyle and Lauren are magical with white roses and hydrangeas set off by the glimmer of deck lights along the dock. Jason, Maris, Elsa, Cliff, are all there with the rest of the guests arriving when suddenly, an uninvited guest arrives. I loved this book and can hardly wait till the next Seaside Saga.
Returning to Stony Point for this book, Castaway Cottage, is like coming home. This story is all about second chances, and never letting the past get in the way of your happiness. This group of friends, their loves, their memories, even their homes, feel like my own friends...I’ve been through a lot with them in the previous novels of this series. I love catching up with them. Their lives are never perfect...they face challenges every day...and it’s that imperfection that brings these stories to life. Prepare to be swept away by their heartaches and their joys.
Through laughter and tears, joys and sorrows, the beach friends come across discoveries, memories, and realizations of the people and places around Stony Point that they were unaware of before. Highly recommend to all beach lovers, romantics, and Long Island Sound fanatics galore.
I was very disappointed in her last book but since I had already purchased it I decided to read it. To my relief it was better! More like her earlier books. Jason and Maris are favorites of mine as are Matt and Eva. (I wish she would include them in more of the story line.) Kyle drives me crazy! Elsa can be a little over the top and her beau can be annoying. Cecilia seemed a little whiney in this book. I love reading about the beach.. the sand, the marsh, the waves. The one thing I did not like about this book was the ending. It was ridiculous!! It was too abrupt and it made little sense.
The saga of the Story Point beach gang continues. At the beginning I thought this book was going to be a little more light hearted than the others. I thought this because Kyle's reaction to the misprint on his marriage license was pretty cute. But as the gang gets ready for the vow renewal the drama really begins. I liked the story of the castaway cottage and it's mystery of it's original owner and the sailor boy. A new mystery is introduced. What happened between Kyle and his brother Shane??
Another great beach saga that brought the friends together This is the first ending that was not at all what i expected and had me a litle irritated Cant wait t see what happes next for the beach family
Another summer season is in full swing at the seashore town of Stony Point, Connecticut. So grab your beach towel, chair, and umbrella and soak up some sun as you catch up with our favorite beach friends.
In Castaway Cottage, author Joanne DeMaio transports the reader back to the tranquil seashore town of Stony Point, Connecticut, where the reader catches up with the lives of friends: Maris, Jason, Eva, Matt, Kyle, Lauren, Elsa, Cliff, Nick, Paige, Vinny, and Celia.
Just like the ebb and flow of the tide, life brings issues and changes to one's life, but the bonds of friendship, sea air, and salt water are cleansing, they cure what ails you. For this group of old friends, this summer season brings happiness, some bittersweet painful memories, and a mystery with a touch of deeply held secrets. As time heals all wounds, so does the sea air, and this group of friends lives by the credo: "salt air, not a care" and "cast away your troubles straight into the sea." The shimmering denim blue sea with its calming effect will offer them another summer season of hope, love, family, friendship, heartache, mistakes, forgiveness, redemption, and blissful new beginnings.
The reader will catch up with the friends as many changes have been occurring since their last visit: Elsa's newly renovated beach inn, Ocean Star Inn, is getting ready for the grand opening in September with Celia's help. Meanwhile, Maris continues to complete her late brother-in-law Neil's manuscript, while husband Jason is busy preparing for his new cottage renovation program on the local public television station, and he is vying for the approval from Mitch and Carol Fenwick to renovate their beach cottage and feature it on his cottage renovation program. Finally, there is Kyle and Lauren, who purchased a cottage in Stony Point and have moved in with the promise of making new beach memories. While these are all happy times for the beach friends, there are also a mixture of sad times and even a mystery develops: it is fast approaching the first year anniversary of Elsa's son and Celia's fiance Sal's death, Maris and Jason will be celebrating their second wedding anniversary but also the tenth anniversary of Jason's brother Neil's death, Kyle and Lauren will celebrate their tenth wedding anniversary with a renewal of vows ceremony, and the Fenwick's have a fifty year mystery concerning their cottage's history on their hands. But alas ... mistakes, secrets, past painful issues, and a surprising cliffhanger will leave the reader's mouth gaping and impatiently waiting for the next installment in The Seaside Saga Series. So now that I have whet your interest in the beach friends latest comings and goings, drive under the railroad trestle and enter the enchanting beach town of Stony Point ... pull up a beach chair ... and visit with the close-knit longtime friends in author Joanne DeMaio's delightful novel, Castaway Cottage.
Castaway Cottage is a heartwarming story of friendship, family, new beginnings and second chances. Author Joanne DeMaio weaves a wonderful tale written in the third person narrative, that is set in the present with flashbacks to the past. The reader is transported to the tranquil seashore town of Stony Point, Connecticut, where they follow along with Celia, Maris, Eva, Matt, Jason, Kyle, Lauren, Nick, Elsa, and Cliff as a new summer season dawns on their little tranquil coastal town.
Author Joanne DeMaio easily captivates her readers' attention with this beautifully written tale through a seamless and flowing storyline, and with a wonderful description of a tranquil beach setting that wraps itself around the reader like a sun-warmed beach towel. The characters draw you into their lives with a strong emotional pull, their complexities and flaws are true-to-life, it is easy to relate to them with compassion, empathy, and hope. With a mixture of intrigue, suspense, drama, humor, heartache, hidden secrets, romance, and a strong bond of friendship, this story takes you on a fun-filled roller coaster ride that will keep you smiling as you turn the pages. I would be remiss if I didn't mention how much I looked forward to catching up with this special group of close-knit friends. It's like you're a summer visitor, and the beach friends envelop you in a warm hug and offer up enough smiles, laughter, and fun-filled beach bliss as their summer adventures unfold.
I really enjoyed reading this latest installment, the element of mystery, suspense, drama, and deep secrets revolving around the history of the Fenwick's cottage, and Kyle and Lauren's upcoming vow renewal ceremony easily kept me turning the pages. But alas, author Joanne DeMaio has teased her readers with an unexpected and very surprising cliffhanger ending that will simply leave them wanting more!
Castaway Cottage is an intricate story of interweaving friendships and life events. It is a wonderful story that demonstrates the power of the magical sweet salt air that will cure what ails you, and it will resonate with you long after the last word has been read.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of the book from the author in exchange for my honest review.
It was wonderful! Starting the next one in this series now. Keep them coming Joanne. Wonderful writing where you feel like one of the characters. I feel sand in my toes. Excellent author.
It holds secrets darker than its gray sea worn shingles. And secrets don't stay buried in this little Connecticut beach town; they wash ashore or get dug up from the sand.
My Thoughts: Reuniting the characters of Stony Point seemed to promise great events. Answers that were left over from our last outing kept us turning pages, even as we enjoyed gathering in the gorgeous setting.
Would Jason Barlow persuade the owners of the last cottage on the beach to sign up for his first renovation show? How does Jason’s brother Neil and his journals help persuade Mitch Fenwick and his daughter Carol to sign on? Who is the mysterious boy called Sailor, and how does his story add to the poignant memories in Stony Point?
When Kyle Bradford discovers something strange about his and Lauren’s marriage certificate, how does he react? Will the two of them find a reason to celebrate their ten years together?
Throughout Castaway Cottage, snippets of the past are revealed in little stories, and as each one unfolds, we learn a little bit more about the town and its history.
But in the end, everything is up in the air as a misstep changes all of their plans. We are left hanging, wondering if they all went wrong when they turned their back on the sea. Another 5 star read that left numerous questions to ponder.
This is the sixth book in the The Seaside Saga. It can be read as a stand alone but you will need to read next book in the series to find out what happens to Kyle and Lauren. The suspense is already building for me.
Jason with Maris's help, gets consent from the owner to finally renovate the last original cottage on the beach. More interesting than the cottage itself are the stories that go with it. We get more back story and understand why the cottage means so much to the owners . I really enjoyed learning about this because I grew up in a house built in the 1850s, complete with a stable slightly turned into a garage and stained glass windows. I always wondered what went on between the walls.
Kyle and Lauren's tenth anniversary is coming up and since the first one was marred by a deadly accident and also there were so many unresolved feelings by Kyle, Lauren and Jason. Kyle is inspired to make a fresh start with Lauren and great preparations are made by his friends. But then an unexpected guest shows up and sends their lives into a tail spin.
I am ready to find our more in the next book. I love this series of friends and family sharing their love and enduring heartbreak.
I received an advance reading copy of the book from the author in exchange for my honest review, my thoughts and feelings are all my own
I will never get tired of the seaside adventures in Stony Point, Ct. Joanne DeMaio describes this charming Connecticut beach town so well you can smell the salt water and feel the ocean breeze as you reconnect with her amazing cast of characters. The continuing story of close-knit friends, totally loyal and always supportive, will warm your heart. You will long to be a part of this special group. This summer saga helps us catch up with our old beach friends and join in their new adventures. CASTAWAY COTTAGE is full of emotion. It is the tenth anniversary of Neal, Jason’s brothers’, death, and Jason has never recovered from it. Jason and Neal were extremely close, and Neal is still a strong force in Jason’s every day life. Jason is an architect and has returned to Stony Point to hopefully renovate a beach house. The owners are reluctant, but he finally earns their trust, and secrets start to reveal themselves. A beautiful story of love and friendship unfolds as friends spend another unforgettable summer at Stony Point. This is a perfect beach read. You will be hooked and become one of Joanne DeMaio’s faithful fans.
Once again I found myself smiling as I read Joanne DeMaio’s saga of the beach friends of Stoney Point. This time the story focuses on Lauren and Kyle. Ten years have passed since their marriage. A long ten years not only for them, but also for Jason who lost his brother, Neil, ten years ago. Hoping for second chances, Kyle and Lauren decide a vow renewal is what they need. Jason is finally going to be able to rehab the stately cottage at the beach that has a story all of its own. Always wondering what his business would be like if his brother, his would be partner, had not died. Excitement ensues as preparations for the vow renewal get underway, but memories, not always good intrude too. Follow all the beach friends as they try to heal old wounds, reflect on happenings of years ago and find their way to making new memories. Received a copy of this book for my honest review.
I just love Joanne's stories and I especially love the ones set in Stony Point. This is a place that is full of sun, beaches, wonderful friends, and great stories. It's such a joy to visit there again and catch up with all the warm and friendly people who live in this community. I've come to know them so well that I feel like I am visiting old friends whenever Joanne takes me back there.
The story in Castaway Cottage is focused on the lonely cottage on the beach, a place that has a tale all it's own. As the cottage reveals it's past, the residents of Stony Point go on with their lives and discover how closely their lives intertwine with the cottage and it's history.
The ending definitely left me wanting more and I can't wait to see how the lives of the residents—my friends—turn out and where life is going to take them next.
I love all Ms. DeMaio's writing style and her books never disappoint! She pens such detailed, well developed characters and plots that they feel real - like you are catching up with old friend and meeting new ones. I find myself falling into her stories like alice down the rabbit hole - and I hate when they end! This book pulled me in and had me losing track of time. I did not want to put it down. I hope that I don't have long to wait for the next installment in the series. I have so many questions!!
I love Joanne DeMaio's books. She's one of my very favorite authors. I definitely recommend this book, this series, to everyone.
Castaway Cottage sees the Stony Point crew getting behind Jason as he gets to refurbish the last cottage on the beach. What is takes to get the owner to agree opens all sorts of different twists to the relationships of the beach buddies. Cliff’s story gets interesting. The vow renewal between Lauren and Kyle is something to be prepared for. The story ends with a surprise new character and leaving you wondering what happened to make everyone loath and disown him. His entry to the story turns the plot upside down 2 more books to go and I will be so sad to say goodbye to these great characters. Starting Night Beach right away. Enjoy
Lots of wisdom has been imparted upon Jason by his father, and we learn several of those lessons here. This is, in my opinion, the most powerful of the Stony Point series (I suggest having tissues handy, and be careful if you read on public transportation on your commute). I love visiting Stony Point - it's like a family reunion where you actually like everybody. I tried to read it slowly, savoring every moment, and still the end snuck up on me. It's going to be difficult to patiently await the next book.
Great book..huge cliffhanger! I love the beach friends! They are always doing something great to help each other out! I thought everything would go smoothly for the friends but no! There was a huge bump! And cliffhanger.. I thought there were pages missing from my kindle when it just ended! I hope everything gets resolved in the next installment. I try to read these books slowly but I always get sucked in and speed through them. I feel like I am part of the beach crew all the characters are so likeable.
I couldn't wait to get to the next book in this series and I wasn't disappointed. The story of the Stony Point friends continues. As always, Joanne's writing brings out all the emotions as you read the book. The characters are so real that I speak to about them to my husband as if they were real people. And, he knows who I'm talking about! Once again, the friends are faced with challenges in their lives and work together to get through them. The ending is a real surprise (at least to me it was) and I can't wait for the next book to see what happens.
I have read all of Joanne's books and they just keep getting better, they never disappoint. I grew up on the opposite shoreline on Long Island and the group of friends in these seaside books mirror in so many ways the friendships and times I spent on the shoreline of the Long Island Sound. The descriptions of places, especially beach scenes, bring to life my imagination and bring me back to another time. Joanne creates wonderful word pictures, I can feel the warmth, the sea breeze, the sand on my feet, and the salt air on my face. Looking forward to the next Stony Point rendezvous.
I am reading Seaside Saga series in order. To me, this book, #7 is the best book so far! I loved the author's take on "second chances" at the end of Chapter 30. In Chapter 40, Celia quotes one of Sal's Italian proverbs: "Remember the good. You have to tell your life in smiles, not tears." I also enjoyed the author's metaphor phrases: fireflies are "dancing stars", the creaks & groans of boats against the boat basin pilings was "boat talk"; and, in Chapter 49, Jason sees that Mitch has "a bit of hippie soul in him". Good stuff, adds to one's reading pleasure!
I love this series for the escapism they provide. It is quite easy to forget your hardships while immersed in these character's trials, tribulations, and ever deepening friendships. The characters are quite believable. The descriptive images of the coastal scenery are beautiful, especially those of us who feel a kinship with the beach and ocean. I applaud the author's efforts.
I wish I could give 10 stars because this book truly deserves that rating. Just when I think one of this author's books is the best, she comes out with a better one. This is an amazing series that I would recommend to anyone that loves to read!! I enjoy how all of the couples interact. I love how she describes the surroundings. You feel like you are right there with them. This one had a twist at the end that I didn't see coming. Now I can't wait for the next one!!
Every time I read a Joanne DeMaio book I say to myself this one is the best one. You can't get any better than this book, but she does. When I start another one of her books, I tend to get lost in the beach friends lives and then when the book is finished it is almost like they are gone for the summer and I have to wait til they return next year.
As always, she doesn't disappoint with her books. And this one isn't any different. A must read.
Back in Stony point and ready for an update on the resident's lives. If every cottage tells a story, the castaway cottage's genre would be mystery. This book has it all and weaves it all together beautifully.. mystery and romance, excitement, stress. It's sweet, it's messy, it's kind of real, it's life. Life in the town of Stony point and this story leaves you with a real cliffhanger! I really enjoyed listening to this series on audible, next up - Night Beach.
Oh Joanne, I absolutely love this book! Your books just get better and better with each book and I can’t put them down! They are so full of love and laughter. I really didn’t want this one to end. If you have not read any of Joanne’s books you really are missing out and should get busy because you will love them too! Thanks Joanne!
The issue with Kyle's brother is never explained, and the end of the book just quits. A cliffhanger is one thing, but there is no closure and nothing to look forward to. Very disappointing.
