An Unconventional Guide to Public Speaking

Rate this book
A lot of misconceptions about public speaking have been circulated around the globe. Have you ever wondered why there can be a so-called professional public speaker with a lot of awards but he or she really sucks in capturing the audience’s attention or performing on stage? From my point of view, I think it is because we haven’t seen people out there who hide amongst the audience because of fear or previous failures that we end up listening to those who have the courage to try, failed and fail again but kept on going. Unfortunately, they are very poor in speech delivery and presentations.
It comes down to just a matter of trying and trying again. I guess that was the formula (to sound academic) for me at least. Trying, experiencing and testing is what is needed for those who hide amongst the audience while listening and judging in dislike of poor speakers.
This guide is about public speaking in general, but I will not bore you with the academic way of presenting this subject. We will go through the book in some sort of a conversation. I am a member of Toastmaster International, but I will not go through Toastmaster’s teachings in this guide. I chose to follow this approach due to my own experience, including books I have read about public speaking, courses I have taken and taught, plus great speakers’ videos I have watched.
Since I am not a world champion of any sort in public speaking or anything else, my pieces of advice are neither rules nor formulas. They are merely questions for which I have often searched answers but couldn’t find, so I had to answer them myself. Through testing and noting everything down, I came up with some conclusions that are more realistic and approachable. However, things can be changed or modified with time according to circumstances. Needless to say, I am not going to bother you with some nonsense quotes such as ‘be yourself’, ‘don’t give up’ or ‘find your destiny’. What I know is to be good at something, you need time, testing and effort. Additionally, smile, don’t worry, it is only public speaking!
