Stephen Leather was a journalist for more than ten years on newspapers such as The Times, the Daily Mail and the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong. His bestsellers have been translated into more than ten languages. He has also written for television shows such as London's Burning, The Knock and the BBC's Murder in Mind series. For much of 2011 his self-published eBooks - including The Bestseller, The Basement, Once Bitten and Dreamer's Cat - dominated the UK eBook bestseller lists and sold more than half a million copies. The Basement topped the Kindle charts in the UK and the US, and in total he has sold more than two million eBooks. His bestselling book The Chinaman was filmed as The Foreigner, starring Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan and grossing more than $100 million.
If you have never read the fantastic Nightingale novels you would move on having read this book. Be warned this set of stories is not of the same quality as the novels, and more importantly nowhere near as good as Short Story Collection 1. Stephen Leather is treating his fans with some contempt here, he knows he has a loyal British fan base who yearn for these stories, but he sets nearly all in the USA and hurriedly produces sub mediocre stories to keep us Brits buying his books.
It is not just the setting but the crazy implausible plots, and Nightingale popping up to help all over America due to his association with Wainwright . Many of the stories follow an identical formulaic pattern. Sadly this will be my last Leather purchase, I am fed up with being 'treated like a mug'. Avoid.
This is the 2nd collection of short stories about the occult detective. There's nine stories here, a mix of previously published on kindle, and new stories, running the entire length of Nightingales career so far. As with any collection of short stories, the quality is a little mixed, but to be fair never really drops below the 4* level. If you know the world of Nightingale, you know exactly what to expect, and as usual the author delivers.
I don't know many authors as varied in their novels as Stephen Leather, one minute he writes about ex SAS soldiers, the IRA terrorists and then great horror novels. Jack Nightingale, for me, is a great character and you never quite know where the stories will end up but it's great fun finding out. Loved this second set of short stories as much as the first and it just reminded how much I love this character.
To be honest four and a half is the score I would have given if the option was available as a couple of the short stories in this collection weren't quite five star jobs. Still worth buying though if you are a fan of the Jack Nightingale tales. Love the humour and love the dark side.
The second short story collection, much appreciated, fun to read can't wait for the next novel Can't see Jack serviving much longer if angels dime not to help, Jack deserves a happy sad ending
