Told in dual POV, 3rd person, it’s the first installment in the "Bloodstream" series and it ends on a cliffhanger. This was my second read by this author and, like the first one, it was really enjoyable. As I was familiar with her writing, I knew how dark she could go with her stories, so I was ready (and yet again I expected more darkness from her), still proceed with caution. It’s intense and dark, angsty, a post-apocalypse universe with advance technology. I loved both MCs, most of you probably would dislike Maddox. At fisrt I thought of him as a psycho vampire and then I went further into the story and found out more about his intentions but still I think what he did with Vincent’s nephew was a bit too much. Vincent was strong, reliable, fiery and dependable. Loved that he didn’t give up so easily or so soon. This story isn’t really a romance but I hope I get more of it in the next one! All in all, loved it and hope you enjoy it as well!

There's a reason GR added friend option, your friends can save you from wasting your time.
I got this book because it was recommended to me on KU so I decided to wing it. I was confused when I first started because it was recommended in the MM category and I was about to rant on amazon but as I read on it got to the MM part, if you can even call it that.
There is no romance in this book, it was just gory, crude and littered with non-consent and dubious consent. I have read books like that and liked how the characters progressed but this book went no where. Maddox was horrible, you'd think his POV will show something appealing about him but he was horrid. Vincent had nothing going on for him, I pitied his predicament but I got tired of his story fast. I just couldn't wait for the book to end and the only reason I finished it was because I was hoping for redemption at the end. I didn't get it.
I come on GR and see about 80% of my friends have this in variants of 'nope' categories. Since I'm obviously a clown, I am now going to entertain you all.

This was a dark, teeth grinding story written in a fascinating way.
Vincent is a Dust Hunter and in order to protect his family from danger and to eliminate vampires -as head case-, he trains the Hunters to do so.
Maddox is commander of Sanctuary Hope... one of the seven Sanctuary Cities.
Under siege by vampires, Vincent as a leader and is always at the front, and now after some devastating events Vincent sacrifices his own life for his people. He is dedicated to his people and will do everything for them... so he volunteers to be a slave to his sponsor.
Now Vincent has a master for life.... merciless, cruel and above all his enemy.
What follows is a power exchange with a lot of chemistry because Vincent himself is a strong leader and the only thing asked from him is full submission!
Maddox has one goal and a clear vision how to reach it.
After getting through some necessary introduction of characters I was into this story.
The main personalities were strong, intriguing and explosive together.
There were violent parts... omg they hurt like hell. It was a captivating story and like the title says, sinister.
With a dark cruel fantasy world as background it was a read that will hold your attention to the fullest. I just love the expansion of the fantasy in it. The brutal, vicious, and in their opinion, righteous way of justice was strongly put down. The danger was palpable and very well described.
The visual description of the surroundings and all the appearances, as well as the whole picture was very appealing.
I didn't realize it was part one of a series...this story is a great start, I'm very curious how this series will develop!
It could be made in a movie. Dark, violent, sexy and powerful, no fluffy story so be aware!

For those looking for vampires of the sparkly variety look away now.....because you ain't getting them here!
Not a pretty story despite the great cover, very much a story of heartbreak, loss and self sacrifice set in a world with Vampires "saving" man from a disaster of his own making. But now the tables are turning and one vampire (Maddox) recognises that he might just need a vampire hunter to save them all. It's just how Maddox sets about persuading Vincent Hudson to help, that makes for a seriously dark MM book, this guy appreciates the need for law and order for keeping people and vampires in line for the world to survive. Its just his interpersonal relations are seriously lacking, he clearly hasn't heard of attracting more bees with honey. Maddox is almost a kind of feral vampire, with a god complex, who tolerates no dissent and meets violence with violence, but who needs to gain Vincent's help and trust to face what is coming, and needless to say it doesn't go well. Boy I can't wait for the next book, so move your backside Katze

Originally 4 stars but man I am still thinking on it and now it's 5 stars. Gritty, dark, and complex at many levels - this one deals with a Dusk Hunter and a Vampire --- and this appears a set up for the next one as it ends on a kind of cliffhanger. Non-consent, slave, and all those entail warnings apply.
I was just so into this - nothing sparkly here. There is still world building that has yet to come but it is a tantalizing glimpse of a future world after global warming and the politics really play a very large role. Loved it!

Despite the two star rating, I'm curious what will happen and will be reading the sequel when it comes out. 2 stars dished out for inconsistent pacing (the first 30% or so bored me and I didn't care about the fighting stuff) and the horrible and completely wrong scene with the nephew. Not cool in any shape or form, or allowable even if this is supposed to be uber dark. Speaking of which, it was! Not a romance in any way but there is steam at the end with the MC's - just demented stuff that's unfulfilled. Many won't like this due to the subject matter, and a lot of it didn't sit right with me either, but there were some riveting scenes in the book that make me curious about continuing onto the next. Full review to come.

When the one you thought as your worst evil enemy turned out to be the one who saved your life...

There wasn’t a sacrifice he wasn’t willing to make…He had thrown his future to the wind, and now , there was truly no going back.
The blurb really caught my attention and the next thing I know, without even think twice, I asked the ARC to review.
I have this huge expectations about this book, and the fact that this is also my first Katze Snow book has completely added the expectations even higher.
When I start the book, the first few chapters feels so freaking slow with ambiguous feels that playing in my head. Until 30% of reading I keep questioning myself about the book I read, because for a book that labeled as 'a gay romance', I didn't feel it like one after few chapters has passed.
But when it reach 45%, suddenly everything changed. The pace went from almost boring-slow-pace then move so fast and the story suddenly changed into a very intriguing and captivating! And before I even realize, the story come to almost cliffy end! And now I WANT the next book like NOW!!!!
I will not give any spoiler about the story, but I can assure you that if you like a dark vampire story that also come with a bit slavery things, I think you should give this book a try. Because trust me, you don't wanna miss this one!
And now dear author, I NEED the second book like NOW!!

Okay, let me begin by saying: HEED THE TRIGGER WARNINGS—every one of them. This is not a book for the faint of heart, nor for someone who thinks a little dark side to their m/m paranormal is fine. This novel is intense, disturbing, and gritty. There is one scene in particular near the beginning of the book with a side character that is exceptionally disturbing and nearly made me put this book aside. There is also a rape further along that left me rather shaken, but what was most intense about this story was the psychological cat and mouse warfare Vincent endured at the hands of Maddox. The near feral vampire who let his cool, civilized demeanor drop as soon as the sun went down didn’t simply want Vincent compliant and servile, he wanted him broken and needy—something Vincent fought tooth and nail. There was a near relentless barrage of disturbing scenarios each featuring Vincent who had given up every semblance of a free life in order to secure a basic standard of living for those in his care, those who survived the vampire attack and explosion that destroyed their compound outside the city.

I’m enjoying the story and I’m hoping as the series progresses the author will give us more “flashbacks” on what the world was like prior to the natural disasters. Just to get a better take on things.

As many dark readers know, there's dark and then there's question one’s sanity for loving this book level of darkness. Katze Snow has that ability to truly delve into darkness unapologetically and leave me begging for more.
Character development is one aspect I really watch for when I read. I need to see complexity and Katze Snow made sure there were no one-dimensional characters, even her most vile ones still had that extra attention to detail. Since this is dystopian genre, world building is especially vital. Katze Snow weaved her brand of magic through words and painted vivid imagery, even (or possibly especially) for scenes I felt like curling into a ball over.
The storyline itself is solid. I love the fact it is an original premise and that these are definitely not the warm and fuzzy vampires seen elsewhere. My only issue is the pacing is a bit inconsistent. It did take a while to draw me in because of that. That lead to my half star deduction but it does not detract from being such a strong read. I know it left me needing book 2 immediately!
Pay attention to the trigger warnings though and if you have a hard limit, this book probably isn't for you.

On the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic world, this paranormal---not quite romance and not quite horror---story is more than just about one man’s mission to save his people and the sacrifice he needs to make to ensure their safety. It is about...
...That just about sums it up. It’s like Resident Evil meets The Hunger Games but at the same time nothing at all like those two movies. By that I mean the image I have in my mind’s eye is very much like the setting of the former, and at first glance Maddox reminds me of President Snow. This story contains non-con and graphic violence, having said that, for those that regularly read dark stories this may not come across as such despite the content.
While the story starts off slow, the pace eventually picks up and before you know it you’re at the end of the story. It was a fast, easy and enjoyable read that makes me wish I had the next installation to pick up. Note, it does end in a cliffy, which isn’t everyone’s cuppa tea.
Re the characters, admittedly I didn't feel any sort of attachment to Vincent until halfway through the book but from that moment on it was difficult to stay detached. OMG this book! I can't even tell how much I love this book. The way that Katze Snow had the characters, the description of this world and the things going on just blow me away. Just amazing! This a an intriguing dark read. I know for me in the beginning I wasn't sure I was going to like this. However the author just pull me in and I couldn't stop. I can't wait for the next one.

Categorizing a book as Horror is like catnip to me, which is why I was so tempted to read Sinister Hunger. Throw in a dystopian/futuristic setting where vampires and the humans who hunt them populate the post-apocalyptic landscape, and I’ll salivate for it almost every time. And, speaking of salivating, I also want to throw in a kudos to Jay Aheer, right here, for this cover and the interior graphics, which are both stunning.
The introduction of the world and characters in this first novel of the Bloodstream series is an interesting one, leaving some details open for possible exploration in future installments: Why/how do vampires exist? What more is there to learn about Vincent that will make him a more complete and dimensional character? Is Maddox Caine as benevolent a monster as he believes himself to be? And, perhaps chief among these questions, is how will Katze Snow redeem Maddox after the heinous and despicable things he’s done in the name of coercing Vincent to bow to his will?
The sympathy dredged up on behalf of the losses Vincent suffers is legitimate and carries throughout everything that happens to him after an attack on his group leaves devastation in its wake. Under the resulting circumstances, he makes the choice to lead the survivors of his band of Dusk Hunters to Sanctuary Hope—something he vowed he’d never do—where Maddox is governor and Vincent will volunteer as tribute in order to ensure the rest of his group will benefit from the vampire governor’s altruism. Vincent is chosen and enslaved by Maddox, for reasons that are more complicated than simple curiosity, and even though Vincent has chosen to make this sacrifice, that does not mean he surrenders without some resistance.
It’s under this premise that Maddox’s characterization becomes rather predictable in a scorpion and the frog type of way—don’t expect him to act contrary to his vampiric nature simply because he shows the ability to be kind and compassionate in certain situations. And it’s here that I’m going to throw out a few cautions to readers—this is not a romance novel. I would also hesitate to say Vincent or Maddox is gay/bi, as their sexuality is not integral to the storyline or to who they are. Maddox Caine enjoys playing with his food, so those who may be sensitive to forced sex as punishment and the non-consensual fondling of a character for the express purpose of that character’s humiliation and to instill fear in him should take heed. Also be aware of an on-page rape scene, of Vincent though not by Maddox. There’s also some gore, for those who might be squeamish, but no more than one should anticipate from vampires and the genre. As a means of shock value, it all serves its purpose, but I can say I’ve read more terrifying scenes in the genre with less elaboration.
There is no doubt that Snow has an engaging voice and writing style that’s easy to read, and I always appreciate a vampire novel with a nod to Caine, the progenitor. But I must say, at the 70% mark of this book I felt as if I was still reading up to the point where the actual story would begin. The series arc appears to be rooted in vengeance, from what is exposed here, and the challenge will be the building of any sort of plausible trust between Vincent and Maddox. That’s going to be an uphill battle. How will Vincent forgive, if not forget, what’s happened to him in a way that won’t weaken his character or compromise his principles, not to mention will dismiss or cheapen his rape as a cliche and simple means of creating angst/drama? And how will the author build a rapport between her readers and Maddox? His ability to wipe memories so his victims forget what he’s done to them is far too pat an answer for me.
If you’re a diehard completionist or merely not a fan of dangling endings, as I mentioned above, there are more questions than answers at the end of Sinister Hunger, so you may want to wait to read it until the next book is closer to publication. Sadly, I didn’t find the hook that’s going to keep me glued to my Kindle in anticipation of the next book in the series, but, as always, YMMV.

If you’re a diehard completionist or merely not a fan of dangling endings, as I mentioned above, there are more questions than answers at the end of Sinister Hunger, so you may want to wait to read it until the next book is closer to publication. Sadly, I didn’t find the hook that’s going to keep me glued to my Kindle in anticipation of the next book in the series, but, as always, YMMV.

This was an engaging read filled with suspense, horror, angst, and yes, a touch of hope
I enjoyed the slow build to the story, I felt like it allowed me to connect with Vincent on a more emotive level.
The secondary main - Maddox, as well as the other supporting characters, were also well defined and very vivid
The world building is uniquely creative - It is a post-apocalypse universe that contains current and advanced technology, as well as areas that offer nothing but heat and sand
The plotline flows well, it is a bit complicated (multiple characters and plotlines are interwoven) but I do prefer that over the easy read -lots of twists along the way that kept me on my toes
This does contain darker subject matters -so if that is not your goblet of blood -you might want to skip this one

I don’t think I’ve ever read a vampire book outside the Twilight series and now I’m trying to work out what I’ve been missing out on thanks to this novel! This was a great read! Really addictive. I’ve had a busy day today and I’ve been extremely grateful of every five minutes peace I could get just so I could get my phone out and keep reading! I love the contrast in the characters of Vincent and Maddox. The chemistry is explosive and I can’t wait to see what else is in store for them. My only regret is that I’ve finished reading this and book two isn’t out yet!

This left me feeling conflicted all around. So the main character becomes a basically a slave in exchange for his family’s safety & security. But he refuses to submit to his enslavement (not saying he shouldn’t) and by doing so is putting his family back in danger and further punished. I just didn’t get his motivations. Was he really doing all this because of family? Or not really? I’m assuming that this is a series based off of the cliffhanger but as much as it pains me not finding out how a cliffhanger is resolved, not enough groundwork was laid in the book and I’m sure if I care enough to find out. I didn’t feel as if I got a great sense of who anyone is in this book

April 29, 2018I was intrigued by the blurb and I had made the thought of reading this book, but thank gods I decided to read first some of the other reviews, and now I'm pretty sure this book isn't of my liking. The author said this book was dark and I could have understood, almost expected, there to be non-con sex between the 2 MCs, but I didn't expect one of them(the vampire) to rape the other's young nephew, that was really too much...Nope.

I absolutely loved this book. I’m so glad I got to read it and enjoy this great world Katze has built for us. The plot was great and you automatically fall in love with the two MCs. The end leaves you definitely hungry for more... see what I did there? No? Ok -runs-

This was just ok for me, if a bit too gorey for my tastes. There wasn’t anything in particular I really disliked about this book, I just really feel like it wasn’t long enough for the plot to properly develop. I think I’m gonna give the sequel a shot for the series to redeem itself.

BOOK COVER
There is no doubt that this cover is beautifully crafted. Simply Defined Art, aka Jay Aheer, has created a masterpiece for Snow's novel. It's simple, with a wine glass filled with what I assume is either white wine or water. Inside the glass is a bloody, white rose, and the cover is adorned with blood splatter. The effect it has is gorgeous and it certain adds mood to the story and what we can expect from the novel.
The tagline, 'One Chance to Survive' is short, sharp, and effective in capturing a reader's attention and I commend Snow and Aheer on their collaboration of the beautiful cover. Definitely a 5/5 star cover.
STORY WARNINGS
The story warnings are as follows: Graphic depictions of sex, extreme violence, child death(s) - maternal and infant, non-consent, extreme gore, and extreme profanity.
Do I think the warnings fit with the story? Absolutely. However, without trying to sound overly cautious, I do believe there needs to be clarification of the non-consent covering beyond the two main characters.
PLOT
The story begins in a post-apocalyptic version of Earth, which has killed fifty percent of human kind because of the current climate, global warming being the primary reason. Within each continent is a sanctuary, a refuge for humans to stay safe under the rule of vampires, who are a lot like politicians.
Immediately, I am drawn into this world. Snow uses an 'interview' to drag the readers in, to explain what the refuges are, and why the world is what it is in the current timeline. It's beautifully done and I was enraptured from the very first page.
In the first chapter, we are introduced to Vincent and his family. They are hunters, humans who find and kill vampires. From the very beginning, I like Vincent. He's rough around the edges, but a strong leader, and he is a very well written, three dimensional character. He has personality and Snow portrays this personality beautifully. There is no argument over whether the author can write, because her words flow flawlessly and her characters are real, and I really like that.
I'm not going to spoil the story for you, so all I will say is that something happens and the majority on Vincent's family are killed. This gives them little choice but to go to the sanctuary that is run by Maddox Caine.
In all honestly, I like Maddox at first. He's diplomatic, and clearly a strong leader, much like Vincent. He keeps his general in check when the other vampire disrespects a journalist, that follows them for a story. But this is where the story goes downhill for me. It's not because of the writing, but rather what happens next is something I can't forgive.
Through some events, Maddox is introduced to Emory, Vincent's nephew. He's clearly intrigued by Emory, so much so that during the reading of this story, I have to go back to the blurb to see if this is some kind of romance between Maddox and Emory. It's not. Vincent is clearly the main character, and while I'm confused, I read on.
I'm sorry to say that it wasn't something I could continue on with. I don't even get to the scene where it happens because it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Now, to be clear: I know this story is classified as a dark, horror story, and at the beginning, there are some clear warnings. I expected there to be non-consensual sex between the two main characters, but I certainly didn't expect . I admit that it was my mistake for thinking this is a very dark, romance story. But I was wrong. This story is not a romance.
From here, I can't review the plot of the story, as it became a 'did not finish' book for me. This was purely an individual decision on what I like to read and this scene was definitely not for me. It also wasn't the kind of scene that I could just skip over and forgive, because it changed my view on Maddox and I don't think I could stomach reading more about him.
STAR RATING
So why a 3 star? There's nothing wrong with the book in regards to execution. Snow is an amazing writer, who has the ability to bring the characters to life. They practically jumped from the page. Her descriptions are gorgeous, although at times I did feel like there was too much.
The DNF wasn't because of Snow's ability to write or story tell, so I don't believe she deserves anything less than 3 stars. However, I was hesitant to give her more than a 3 star, because my tastes didn't align with the book's content. Maybe it was my fault in the failure to realize that this book wasn't the romance that I assumed it was, however I didn’t feel comfortable giving it more than a 3 star. Please take note that this was only because of my personal tastes due to the level of darkness, as well as the unredeemable character action that I could not forgive.

Lord, what a book. It was gritty, it was violent but oh so thrilling.
Katze Snow is able to create a story where you don't know if you hate or love the character. She fleshes out character who are truly sinister but on the other hand they aren't one dimensional, they have more layers than expected and although the things seems black and white, it's blurring between the lines.
If you can't endure violence, non-consensual scenes and gore you won't like this book. If you are a fan of paranormal books, full of terror and horrow and mind blowing events, with twists and actions by characters you wouldn't imagine this book is totally yours.
I could go more into depth but honestly the events in the book are so connected, the future of some characters so bound to new characters you would need to explain in detail, so it would cause spoiler. So I keep my review a bit vague but I advise to read the book, to maybe take a look and download a sample. :)
The book has a mean cliffhanger, and you really want to read the next volume.
Katze Snow created a book which is the start of a larger universe and the way how the characters where designed shows she took the right time to create and polish them. I can't wait to see how this ends and how many books we can expect. :)

This book was amazingly dark, intriguing and I cannot wait for the next one!
There are a lot of names packed in the first few pages, so it took me a minute to really get everything squared away. Once I learned the character names and got through the first chapter, I was hooked.
I liked the addition of the snip bits of interviews.. it will make sense once you read the book. It gave an interesting insight into the world that the book is in.
You know an author can write when they make you both hate and love a character. Maddox was not at all what I expected. He is one of those characters that you just cannot make up your mind about. You love him, respect him, fear him, then hate him. I was basically growling at him for the majority of the book but he also redeems himself. I liked Vincent for his fire and integrity. Sometimes I wanted him to just dang submit to make his life easier, obviously he is a little stubborn. But it made the story so good!
Do not go into this book thinking you are going to get a sweet HEA. That is definitely NOT the case. But this book is awesome and I cannot wait for the next one!
One note: the trigger warning should definitely be at the beginning of the book, rather than clicking it to put at the end. I did not even see it and kept going until I got to the first chapter. So I did not see the trigger warning until I had finished the book. I was fine with those things, but obviously some people will not be.

Reading this book was like stumbling into a meme where you find a new-to-you author and then find their backlist!
This was a brilliant read, refreshing take on the vampire/human future trope, exciting in its unpredictability and at the same time makes you think - I was having an internal battle as to whether I should like or loathe Maddox, and my default was to root for Vincent and his band of dusk hunters... but then you realise Maddox can’t help being a vampire (although the asshole part could be avoided I guess!) as much as Vincent can’t help fighting them and it’s not so black and white.
So, an engaging read and I am on tenterhooks waiting for book 2 :) Until then, I’m off to explore the author’s backlist!

Dark with a beating heart
I was very intrigued with the vampire slave dystopian world premise. If you enjoyed Captive Prince or the Beautiful Monsters series you will enjoy this. It’s dark and based on the reviews I was worried it might be too dark for my taste, but I thought it was a perfect blend of dark and disturbing while maintaining a good plot and real heartfelt moments. I do not hate Maddox contrary to popular opinion in reviews lol but I am very eager to see what happens in book two. I don’t know if I would consider this particular book a Romance but I see great potential for the next books in the series now that the main characters have established a pretty good foundation. I especially love romance where you can’t even imagine how two enemies could potentially end up together and fall in love and I’m right there with these two so I am very intrigued to see where this goes..

I think if I hadn't read the Jex Lane's Beautiful Monsters series this book would at least have been a 4 star to me. I really like Vincent as a character. He's strong and dependable, and just the person I would've looked to follow in an apocalyptical world. It sounds horrible to say/write down but it wasn't dark enough for me. It could've gone a lot farther. Jex Lane had me almost in shock with what I was reading- complete with body tremors and like a need for a blanket.
The score I gave it won't stop me from reading the next book in the series tho. The book has great potential.
