I stood by and let it happen for too long, but I will not do it anymore. I will not be the person who watches others get hurt and does nothing to stop it. Not anymore.
Returning to Sovereign City after everything that was stolen from her is something Indra never thought she would do. Despite the scars she wears both inside and out, left there at the hands of the Sovereign and the Fortis, she is determined to save her people from oppression, even if it means putting her own safety at risk. But it isn’t long before she once again finds her world shattering around her. As the dust settles, Indra manages to find strength among the ruins, and she sets out on a quest to unite the four Outlier tribes, hoping to take their enemies down once and for all.
I'm a mom of four, Air Force wife, and author of adult and young adult dystopian, post-apocalyptic, and science fiction. I love intense world building and character driven stories that feature strong female leads - as well as a side of romance - and any end of the world scenario. Zombies, aliens, a distant future where people have no clue how the world ended in the first place, you name it, I will create a story there!
Having lived in a lot of different places after more than a decade as an Air Force wife, I love setting my books in cities I've actually lived in to give them authenticity. I've resided in: Indiana, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, California, and Oklahoma but am currently back in my home state of Ohio where I live with my husband, four kids, two dogs, and three cats.
When I'm not writing, you can find me by my pool (in the summer), getting lost in some binge-worthy show or at a play with my husband, patronizing one of the great restaurants in my small town of Troy, Ohio with my family, or traveling. I want to see everything and make a point of visiting a new place every year!
Some of my favorite books are The Hunger Games, Pride and Prejudice, The Host, and The Stand. My favorite movies are Aliens, Jaws, Signs, Say Anything, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and The Greatest Showman.

After everything you hold dear is taken from you, after your dignity has been stripped bare, what do you have left? You have revenge, you have justice and you have your dreams. Indra is taking back her life and the lives of the Outliers and she will not be stopped. She knows what is needed, but she needs help, she needs alliances and she needs to make the Outliers believe in themselves, she needs an UPRISING.
Kate L. Mary has created the perfect blend of tension, heartbreak and determination as the Outliers come together to bring down the oppressive Sovereign and their fierce warrior puppets, the Fortis.
As Indra fights the discrimination within the Outliers, finessing their alliance, she also teaches what remains of her tribe how to survive with pride. She will also have to face a truth of the heart, she may have to choose between the Outliers and the one Fortis soldier she has come to care about. After all she has lost, after all that has been taken from the Outliers, the choice should be clear, but is it?
Hang on for a tale of strength and fortitude as one young woman declares war on oppression. Indra is “that” heroine, the one you wish you knew, the one you wish you could stand beside. Ms. Mary doesn’t shy away from disturbing scenes, from scenes filled with pain or from scenes that show great strength. This action-packed addition to the Outliers series is riveting page after page in a world that is a dark and skewed version of perverted power over the masses.
Feel the tension and the doubts right through to your soul as good prepares to take on evil. I was glued to every page and cannot wait for more!
I received a complimentary ARC edition from Kate L. Mary!
Series: The Outliers Saga - Book 2 Publisher: Twisted Press, LLC (May 21, 2018) Publication Date: May 21, 2018 Genre: Post-Apocalyptic | Dark Fantasy Print Length: 201 pages Available from: Amazon For Reviews, Giveaways, Fabulous Book News, follow: http://tometender.blogspot.com
This series is set in a world many years after the downfall of a previous society. A group called the Sovereigns rule this new world, aided by the strength of the solider tribe, the Fortis. The Outliers are made up of four tribes, who work for them. The main character in the series is Indra, a young woman from the Winta tribe. In the previous book she fell foul of those in power and saw her husband die at their hands, and also developed feelings for a Fortis soldier, Asa. Though women in the Winta trible are expected to be submissive and concentrate on things domestic, Indra finds a strength she didn't know she possessed. When Book #1 ended, she was out in the forests, hunting both animals for her tribe to eat, and Fortis soldiers.
Uprising concentrates on Indra's growth, as circumstances conspire to decimate their tribe. Taking survivors into hiding, she sees what must be done to right the injustices done to her people and the other Outlier tribes.
Kate Mary is just such a good writer. Her characters spring off the page and she has a real knack of illustrating the passion between two people without saying very much at all; Asa in this book is, in my mind, another version of Axl in her Broken World zombie apocalypse books, who was very much in the Daryl Dixon mode; suits me! The ending is great, and I assume there will be more...
There's no recap from the last book and I've got a really bad memory, so I downloaded Book #1 again (I've downloaded them both on Kindle Unlimited) to read the last 10% of it to remind me what was going on. The books are not stand alone; you need to read them in order, as it's a continuing story. I thought the pace was just right, the story imaginative, and I'd definitely recommend this series to anyone who likes this genre.
For some reason I thought this was a two book series, About 3/4 in I realized that wasn't going to be. I don't think I would have started this series if I would have known. This would have been a five star but took awAy as there is no end in sight.
I was looking forward to continue Indra's story after Outliers but also cautious due to being burned by middle book syndrome (basically that the second book in a trilogy tend to be filler and parts of it could be put into the 1st and 3rd book without it making a difference.).This did not suffer from that.
Indra has become a warrior woman after her husband's death. After saving a fellow tribe member from assault her clan is destroyed. She tales the remaining women and children in and they become a new tribes, the Windhi, who must team up with the other Outliers to fight against the system.
The Trelite is a heavily patriarchal tribe that views women as disposable. They are farmers with no desire to be hunters or fighters.
The Huni are an egalitarian hunter tribe. They have a female leader and a highly sexual,polyamourous/non-monogamous tribe.
The Mountari are egalitarian hunters. The accomplished hunters are fought over by the women for the right to be with them. The men fight for the right to the leader. They are a serial monogamous due to this.
There isn't a traditional cliffhanger but the ending sets up the final book.Indra growth and the growth of her people is fantastic to watch. The Outliers out number the other castes and them joining together should be interesting.Indra and Asa's relationship continues to grow and develop. this a jam packed book and an enjoyable one at that.I recommend this.
Once again Kate L. Mary grips you and wrings out all your emotions. Indra has already suffered so much in Book One but her trials are not yet over. The end of The first book sees Indra discovering her own strengths and Uprising continues to explore what she is capable of. She stands up for what she believes and unwittingly becomes the driving force for a resistance.
Powerful and thought provoking, Uprising doesn’t just explore the tribulations of fighting for your right to freedom. This book looks into the intricacies of a revolution and the difficult decisions and sacrifices that a people need to make to ensure the next generation has a choice.
I simply loved and enjoyed this heart aching story and I am chomping at the bit to find out whether the Outliers succeed. If you like an epic story and a dystopian read then I recommend this series.
If you thought the first book in this series, Outliers, was exciting, be prepared to be wowed! I just could not predict where this was going. And every time, I just about had it figured out--WHAM--something different happened. There were lots of unpredictable and unexpected moments in the book. The ending was definitely a cliffhanger but that is to be expected with a series. And it'll give me something to do while waiting for the next book...trying to figure out where Kate L Mary will take us at this point.
Indra decides to return to work in Sovereign City and once inside her plans are to extract revenge for the heartache and pain she suffered by their hands. I kind of think or wonder if she is not returning so that she could lay eyes once again on the place and the people who took so much from her so that she could face the pain and heartache; she could heal faster; be stronger and could lead the uprising against the Fortis and Sovereign City to save her people from being their slaves.
Indra has not been inside the city long before disaster strikes and leaves her and her friend Mira running for their lives. In order not to be caught on the way home Indra and Mira decide to go through the wastelands to reach home. Upon their arrival they find that the home they once is knew is gone. Indra flees her home to the other Outlier tribes in hope of bringing the tribes together to fight the Fortis and Sovereign City.
I love this world that Kate has created for The Outliers. I love the Outliers, the people who are a part of this tribe. I love their names and that some of were named after some of the characters on The 100.
This has been an amazing journey one which I can’t wait to continue. I was so excited to read Uprising that once I had it in my hands I couldn’t put it down but as you know life does get in the way at times but I did not want to lay it down and when I did Indra, Asa, Mira, Emori, Roan and all the others were running around in the back of my mind and I couldn’t wait to finish reading what they had to tell me but at the same time I didn’t want to see Uprising come to an end.
Oh and by the way I am #TeamAsa. I have been rooting for Asa since the beginning. I wanted so much to see Indra with Asa but I do understand that she had to have her time with Bodhi in order to be the person she is now. Everything she went through all the heartache and pain had to be experienced so she could be the person to stand up and fight for her people. If she had not experienced these things then her life could have taken a complete different direction and she might not be the person to help her people rising up against the Sovereign.
I would recommend uprising to all fans of dystopia and post-apocalyptic. Pick up your copy of The Outliers and Uprising today to start your journey through this incredible world.
Uprising is book two in the Outliers series and they must be read in order, trust me you won’t regret it. Indra has suffered most of her life now she is put the ultimate test of uniting tribes that separated years before so they can beat their enemy. It’s heartbreaking but the strength and courage throughout the book is breathtaking. I’m not a fan of cliffhangers however I’m so looking forward to the next.
The Outlier series continues and we get to see how much Indra is changing. She's now the Head of her own tribe and her struggle to unite the Outlier tribes as a group to fight against the evils of the Fortis and Sovereign. I am so loving this series and I just couldn't put the book down. The story was so exciting and wondering what will happen next. I'm off to read the last book in the series and anticipating how the author will draw this saga to a close.
*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*
Just when I thought Indra's story couldn't get any more intense and incredible, I read Uprising, and my mind was blown. Again. I'm thoroughly impressed with the world building, character development, and writing. Outliers was fantastic, and Uprising has just gotten better.
Indra is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Her growth has been such and incredible and inspiring journey to read about. She has everything I look for in a lead.
The world building has been taken to a new level in Uprising. I love how we really get to see the culture and beliefs of each tribe. They are so unique and different, but they are also human. It's such a cool reading experience to actually see well developed cultures intermingling with each other in one book.
Kate L. Mary's writing is beautiful. There is never too much description- what we need to learn is beautifully interwoven into fantastic character dialogue. it's fast paced from the start, and it never slows down.
This is another page turner. The story is intense, inspiring, beautiful, and the kind of edge-of-your-seat action that I love to read. I didn't want the book to end, and now I'm sitting here, hoping the next book is not far away!
The struggle for freedom for Indra and her fellow outliers continues.I really enjoyed seeing the transformation of Indra from a obedient slave to a strong warrior for her people. The author has a real talent for world building and creating well developed characters I care about.I received an arc from the author.
Uprising is the second instalment of the Outliers saga, a 'dystopian future' story of oppression and good triumphing (hopefully) over evil. I enjoyed the first book in the series and wanted to see how the trials and torments inflicted on Indra, in that book, led her to grow and change as a person. I wasn't sure how the story would continue but was pleasantly surprised at the direction it took.
Indra is a Winta, one of the four tribe of Outliers, born to serve the Sovereign and live in fear of the Fortis. However having been whipped to within an inch of her life, after watching the beheading of her husband Bodhi, Indra is not only no longer in fear of them but is determined to rain vengeance down on them both. However things are complicated by Asa, a Fortis who doesn't live to humiliate and subdue the Outliers. Can Indra free her people or will she only bring them and herself further pain and loss?
Indra felt quite young in the first book, almost NA, so I was surprised to discover she was in her mid twenties. However she has definitely grown and matured and came across as a strong and determined character. The book is written first person, entirely from her perspective but in a way that still allows us to learn and understand the other main characters in the book.
I loved getting to know more about Asa and the other tribes, as well as the Untouchables. The book held some very surprising plot twists and whilst it doesn't end in a traditional cliffhanger, it does leave me on tenterhooks and wondering where this story can possibly go now.
The book really held my attention from the start and I enjoyed the story from start to finish. Whilst it makes clear that two of the characters engage in a sexual relationship, this isn't described and I feel the book could be enjoyed by older teens as well as adults. This is a book I am happy to recommend to any who enjoy well written stories set in dystopian futures/ alternate worlds. I wouldn't describe it as either fantasy or sci-fi but it does seem to slot within that general genre.
Uprising is the second book in The Outliers series. I thought the first book was amazing, but this one is even better! We reunite with Indra as she starts back at work in the Sovereign city. She feels different now, with the strength that Bodhi encouraged. She is not prepared to go back to being meek and mild, as she was before. Asa is still working for the Sovereign.
This book has so much packed into it, it's quite unbelievable. With action, hope, and heartbreak, there is plenty to keep you turning the pages. There are plenty of twists and turns as Indra works to bring the Outlier tribes together, to beat the Fortis and Sovereign. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about how the women of the Winta tribe worked together, although you can see the cracks in the seams. I can't wait to see where this goes next.
It does end on one helluva cliffhanger, so fair warning! This is a book where I knew the ending was coming, and it couldn't come quick enough, but I also wanted it to never stop!
This is an excellent addition to the series, and is still rich in detail, with wonderful characters, and an intriguing and gripping storyline. Absolutely recommended by me. Bring on the next!!!
* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and my comments here are my honest opinion. *
Merissa Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books! May 31, 2018
My anticipation for this book was on a level so high, I was so excited when I got the ARC.
This book started slow for me and there were times where I was a little annoyed at the righteousness Indra felt. But as I got through the book you could really see the growth of her character compared to the weak character from the first book.
Kate is a brilliant writer that can paint a very vivd picture of a character's emotions and perceptions. I can see exactly where Indra is coming from. I can see exactly where Asa is coming from. I can see exactly where the Fortis are coming from. I can see exactly where the Outliers are coming from. And who cares where the Sovereign are coming from.
There is a struggle with Indra's pacifist Winta nature and her aggressive need for progress. That is a huge conflict in the book that is addressed in great detail. This conflict also presents itself in the women Indra begins to inspire.
The reason I didn't give 5 stars was the slow almost annoying beginning. But the book picked up and I am really pleased where the story is going. I cannot wait for the next one!
For some strange reason, I was torn about the changes I saw in Indra's personality, I knew that she needed to protect herself and her people, but I thought the compassion she had for others seemed to wane. And for me that took something away from how unique she was. However, I loved her strength and determination to stand firm and strong and not allow fear to deter her from her goal. I wanted to connect to hers and Asa's love story, but I could not. I felt that the author missed an opportunity by not giving more depth to their relationship. I still enjoyed the story, but not as much as Outliers.
Superb sequel to this new series! Indra continues to grow, as Kate L Mary continues her fantastic world building. Growth galore, action, new characters, everything you want in a sequel - it's here.
If I could add an extra star for the lead in to the next book and the character's ability to grow - I would. :D
Book 2 was an okay read and had errors throughout. The characters and plot are a bit slow and repetitive. The plot is predictable and follows as an easy read. The characters have been written in a typical MC hates herself and can do nothing right and complains constantly.
Uprising: A Post-Apocalyptic Dystopian Novel (The Outliers Saga, Book 2) by Kate L. Mary and narrated by Grace Sylvan is...WOW! What an exceptional follow up! For reals…if you enjoy books with darker themes, are empowering to women, strong female leads, or post-apocalyptic/dystopian worlds, you should be checking this series out asap.
What it’s about? After healing from her husbands death, Indra returns to her previous place of employment but something in her has changed. She is no longer the powerless woman she once was. Going back to work and encountering the Fortis and Sovereign sets off a flurry of emotions. No longer able to do nothing when her friend is being violated by Lysander, she takes action, resulting in changes for the Outlier tribes, Fortis, and Sovereign. Expect a lot of action and killing. We learn about the different Outlier tribes as Indra tries to unite them to rise up against the Fortis and Sovereign. Indra creates and becomes the leader of a new tribe of women. A romantic relationship develops. How to deal with the threats in the wastelands and from fellow tribal members? Who lives in the mirrors that make the energy for the Sovereign? How to handle the misogynistic tribe? What is it that’s stopping the tribes from entering Sovereign City? What happened to the missing tribal members? There should be no surprise that the book ends in a cliffhanger as there are three books in the series, but I feel I need to say this because there’s always someone who complains.
If you are looking for an empowering book, this is it. Make no mistake, it’s a book that deals with dark subjects. Kate’s writing makes you feel emotions and creates bad guys so bad that you can’t help but hate.
The narrator, Grace Sylvan, once again did a great job. As I said in the first book review, it is clear she is the perfect fit for this series. I would check out other books by her.
Overall I cannot recommend this series enough. I feel it’s Kate’s best work to date. I went straight from book one to book two despite other life obligations I should have been doing. If you enjoy books with darker themes, books that are empowering to women, or post-apocalyptic/dystopian worlds, this is the series for you. If you are new to Kate’s books, you best get on the Kate bandwagon quick!
Parental guidance/trigger warnings: revenge, remembering past sexual assaults and coming face to face with abuser, attempted rape, slaves, sex on wedding night and one other time (not in graphic detail), tattooing, killing of men via arrows, death from other weapons, one tribe is extremely sexist and believes women need men to survive (treats women like they are the bottom of the barrel- no eye contact/no talking or addressing women, comments about how they are inferior and things along those lines), hitting of a woman by a man, cruel treatment of the disabled by the Sovereign, getting rid of babies who are born with what some might consider a disability (death or sent to live elsewhere), and possibly similar scenarios that I’m forgetting. I do not recall any swearing. This is a book that contains dark/potentially triggering subjects.
*I was given a free review copy of the audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Thank you for allowing me to listen and review the book!
I received this book via a free promo code and this is my voluntary review. Book 2 in the Outliers series.... now it does a pretty decent recap but you should enjoy Outliers before you make it this far so you can understand the true source of the trust Indra has for Asa and why she needs revenge against the Sovereign and Forties. The Sovereign have been plotting for a long time to enslave their Outlier servants in Forties village and keep them even more in their grasp.. as if slavery would be an efficient improvement from the indentured servitude that they currently suffer. Forties are the domesticated thugs at the walls of Sovereign city and sometimes their cruelty is even worse than that of the Sovereign, as they abuses their own position to kill and hurt Outliers for sport since they cannot take their anger out on their masters. Indra has now recovered from her injuries after her husband Bodhi was killed by her Mistress Saffron orders, soon though, she discovers a thirst for revenge, and she gets it by slaying Forties hunting parties who venture into the Wilds. Before long Indra has returned to her position in the House of Saffron but with a very specific goal in mind. Not content with just revenge for herself, she wants to free all her people.. every Outlier. Asa is still as in love with Indra as ever, unable to be with her as he works as a Forties Guard for the House of Saffron and hes desperate to protect her this time around. When Saffron's evil son tries to violate Indras friend Mira, she takes swift action setting into motion a series of events which leads to the decimation of the Winta Tribe. With the few remaining survivors of her people, Indra recruits the other leaders of fellow Outlier tribes and the rebellion is underway. Ends on a cliff hanger but dont all the best things come in 3s????
Indra embarks on her new task after her revelation or awakening of who she is and what her purpose here on earth is. She has been on a one-woman quest to rid the world of the Fortis; one man at a time. She has been successful because she has not been seen, leaving the killings for the wild animals to mask her involvement. That luck is sure to run out and it will have dire consequences for the other Outliers. Realizing she can not accomplish her task on her own, Indra sets out to unite the four tribes of Outliers. If she succeeds she will have the numbers necessary to defeat the Fortis and then move on to the Sovereign. This is the story of Indra’s new mission; to unite the Outliers and bring an end to the Sovereign’s reign of oppression. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I liked this book better than the first book because this one isn't anywhere near as depressing as the first one. Despite the initial stupid decision to return to work for the Sovereigns without a plan to overthrow them, Indra is a strong character, who uses her brains to rise up. Indra and many of the other Outliers are so tired of the Fortis and the Sovereigns treating them like dirt, so with Indra leading the charge, they try to take them down. I did get a bit bored with all of the Outlier politics, but it was interesting to meet some of the other Outlier groups. Also, I liked the conflict for Indra and her feelings for Fortis, Asa. Overall, an entertaining, well-written story. I'm looking forward to reading the finale.
This is such a great story!! The world has ended...the world has changed...and we are back to people trying to own and control others, where women are property...and Indra has had enough!! She decides its tie to rise up and fight...She protects her friend and all hell breaks loose...her village is destroyed and this leaves her some hard decisions...She takes charge and she makes them..uniting the Outliers to make a stand!! So great!! I loved it...all of it...great narration too!! I hope book 3 comes out asap!!!
A fantastic series Indra has been taking to treatment that has been dealt her people for along time. Its time to take whats theres back. Will they be able to accomplish this. This is definitely a must read series. That keeps you captivated through the whole read. With twists and turns. The Narrator does a great job at bringing out the Characters as well as the Authors writing to where you can visually see the scenes. This series to me is up with the 100 and Divergent Shauna Joesten
I love this series! I was super excited to get book 2 and it definitely lived up to my expectations. Kate is an amazing author as I've loved all her books that I've read so far. The narrator did a great job as well! Now I can't wait to get my hands on book 3.
My only issue was that it was somewhat hard to imagine someone with teeth piercings. Specifically, with how they would have gotten them to stay in the skin and not fall out?
I liked this book better than the last in some ways and didn't in others, but overall really like the progression of the series. I think the author does an amazing job of foreshadowing, even if she like REEEALLLYYYYY drives it into you LOL. Heavy handed but good and YA dystopian so what really can I ask for. I loveeee how angry Indra is and how it's not necessarily painted as a good thing. Her rage is powerful and she gets shit done because of it, but it almost feels like it's going to burn her up inside and leave her having nothing. Her fires are going to burn everything dear to her. I loveeee Asa :3 yayyy! Yannow. I read this book in like 2 days I ATE IT UP... Real excited to start the next one :)
I DNFd at 56%. For a woman who goes about smiting her enemy, I nevertheless found the FMC a tad boring. I felt the complete lack of planning and smarts in overcoming the enemy made her continued successes unbelievable. The LI was also pretty sweet but dull. I'm procrastinating from marking at the moment, so I should be easily distractable lol, but it still didn't grab me.
Uprising: A Post-Apocalyptic Dystopian Novel was another great read by Kate L. Mary. Indra returns to Sovereign City to save her people from oppression. Even though it may put her own safety at risk. She is on a quest to unite the four Outliers in order to take down their enemies. I enjoyed reading Indra's story and enjoyed Grace Sylvan's narration and can't wait to read more in this series.
