Rate this book
A deadly Sniper, a brazen Shoplifter, a VIP AssassinationA sniper is randomly shooting people in New Orleans, and residents are terrified. While NOPD Detective Frank Renzi hunts the deadly sniper, a shoplifter continues to steal expensive items from French Quarter shops. This enrages business owners, but intrigues the lonely sniper, who contrives to meet her. International intrigue fuels this chilling thriller. If Renzi doesn't catch the sniper, a visiting VIP will die.

"Delightfully unpredictable, another Frank Renzi saga that turns expectations upside down. This twisty thriller weaves a far more sinister tale than that of a lone random sniper." — Midwest Book Reviews"The plot twists and turns faster than the sniper's bullet. Action at its finest. Susan Fleet [is] a master at the art of writing crime fiction." — Feathered Quill Book Reviews“A fast paced crime thriller strewn with international intrigue and a veritable gumbo of characters. It plays like a jazz combo trading eights in a dark and sweaty French Quarter nightclub. NOPD Detective Frank Renzi races to see the big picture before it's too late.” — Amazon reader“Difficult to put down, with plenty of twists to keep the reader guessing. Realistic procedures, believable dialogue and characters with distinct personalities.” — Amazon reader

Music & Mayhem is my game. Started my trumpet career in my teens, got into the mayhem later. My print journalist father taught me how to play pool in the police station. Maybe that's how I discovered my dark side.

After gigging on trumpet in the Boston area for many years (while teaching at Brown University and Berklee College of Music), I moved to New Orleans, which became the setting for my crime thrillers. Scroll down and check the video trailers.

I survived Katrina, but divide my time between Boston and the Big Easy. On my website I post profiles of women musicians. I also write ebooks about true crime: DARK DEEDS about serial killers, stalkers and domestic homicides. Please come visit!!

Excellent novel by Susan Fleet! The characters jump off the page - Frank Renzi's relationship with Kelly has, with this novel, sprung to life. Ms Fleet has managed to give the Sniper, a cold-blooded killer, a deeper personality. He has his own code of ethics and is so capable of love that one can't help hoping that somehow he will get out of the story in one piece.

Susan Fleet's novels are always good value and this one is no exception. The pacing, the tension and the New Orleans ambience are just right. I couldn't put the book down and am hoping for another Renzi novel by next year.

Another good read by Susan Fleet. Sniper is about a hitman with a heart, he tried to only kill the people he was paid to kill. Sometimes other people got in his way.
Frank Renzi is starting to become one of my favorite homicide detectives. There are a lot of twists and turns in Sniper, just when you thought you figured everything out…
I recommend this book everyone who likes crime thrillers.

Susan Fleet delivers another winner. I have read all of her books and impatiently wait for a new one to arrive. Sniper kept me turning pages and losing sleep. Frank Renzi is one of my favorite detectives and New Orleans is a favorite city for a murder mystery. I wish Susan could write as fast as I can read.

And there it is... another great read by Susan Fleet. A great plot with lots of twists and turns. Lots of emotions, love, anger, sadness all flowing beautifully throughout the book. You want to like the sniper, and sometimes do... but other times you just want to slap him. And then there is the shoplifter... this young lady, I just wanted to shake... wake up Win!!!! Ok, Frank, you had it figured out... or not quite, just trying to convince others, well that became an issue, didn’t it? Frank Renzi is one of my favorite detectives! If you want a good read with lots of action and reaction, I highly recommend The Sniper!

In Susan Fleet’s Sniper, a sniper and his new girlfriend, a pathological shoplifter, wreak havoc on the city of New Orleans as they kill random victims in order to prepare for the assassination of a foreign head of state. Frank Renzi scrambles to figure out the motive for the killings, and when he finally does, no one believes him. The novel has love, intrigue, conspiracy, revenge, and pleasantly creepy insights into the day to day life of two very different career criminals. A great summer read.

Rather than review my own book, here is a review from Midwest Book Reviews.

"Sniper pairs New Orleans homicide detective Frank Renzi's crime-busting abilities with a challenging scenario as he faces a French Quarter sniper, a crime spree, and a set-up in which a deadly killer targets strangers with the precision of pre-calculated automation. Frank not only can't pinpoint the perp, he has no idea if the killings are random or targeted. Neither is it evident why a clever jewelry store thief's operations should attract the sniper's admiration and earn an invitation for them to meet. Eventually, Frank comes to believe that someone important will die if he can't get a better handle on the sniper's modus operandi and his identity. Unfortunately, Frank doesn't know who the target will be.
Like Susan Fleet's other Frank Renzi books, Sniper can be read as a stand-alone. While it dovetails nicely with his other adventures, it doesn't require any prior familiarity with Renzi in order to prove accessible to newcomers, who receive all the background details they need in the course of this riveting crime thriller.

Another plus to the evolving mystery is that readers are privy to the sniper's thoughts, actions, and his stormy relationship with his handler, which dictates some of his choices and actions. One glimpses the heart and mind of the killer and sees through his eyes, an approach that creates a tense thriller in which a killer barely on the edge of control chafes at being reigned in and manipulated. The addition of a clever thief who uses disguises and carefully targets her heist victims delivers a fascinating scenario in which three vastly different perspectives of New Orleans life and culture in the French Quarter dovetail with deadly precision.

Renzi's interactions on the street and with the top brass in his department reveal everyone's stake in protecting their reputations, some of which hinder Renzi's search for the sniper. Fleet's characters are realistic and engrossing, her action swift and precise, and her subplots complex, enhancing the atmosphere of treachery and betrayal. Fans of detective novels and crime thrillers will find the tension exquisitely wrought with just the right doses of psychological intrigue, insight, and unexpected twists to keep the story line moving along at a swift pace.

Sniper is delightfully unpredictable. Readers may get into the minds of Renzi, the sniper, and the thief; but won't always know where their lives are heading. Mystery fans who crave surprises will delight in another Renzi saga that turns their expectations upside down, a twisty thriller that weaves a far more sinister tale than that of a lone random sniper." -- Diane Donovan, senior reviewer Midwest Book Reviews

New Orleans homicide detective Frank Renzi returns in author Susan Fleet's, Sniper". This eighth book of this outstanding series like the seven previous is a really good read. I've now read seven of the Frank Renzi's (How'd I miss, "Natalie's Dilemma ?), and author Susan Fleet is one of my favorite authors. Renzi a hard boiled cop with nine years in the New Orleans PD and ten previous in Boston takes on the hardest of cases to crack. Partner Kenyon Miller and live in girlfriend Kelly O'Neill always have Renzi's back. Mentor and boss Detective Lt. Morgan Vobitch is sidelined in this case having undergone open heart surgery. Even from his hospital bed Vobitch will get involved to support Renzi. New Orleans has a sniper problem. Two dead and one cop shot and badly wounded from horseback has the city on edge. The police have few clues and several VIP's are due to visit soon. Set in 2011 the names of the VIP's from overseas are long replaced. So it was nice to see these foreign dignitaries names back in the news once again. Also plaguing New Orleans is the "Shoplifter". This shoplifter has run wild stealing from merchants at will, and only steal the very best merchandise. It's a game for the shoplifter to see how far she can push the envelope of her crimes. Incredibly it's the Shoplifter who figures out the Sniper's identity. An excited Shoplifter wants to become the Sniper's partner and get trained as a sniper too. As Renzi and the New Orleans PD struggle to determine who the primary target of the Sniper, a wild shootout in a downtown British run hotel throws everything into chaos. Renzi and crew do determine the Sniper is behind the hotel shootings but it also raises more questions than it answers. In an action pack plot that ran some 280 or so pages, "Sniper", is as fast paced as it is action packed. Author Susan Fleet is a master at putting Renzi and his team in impossible situations and with little to no hope of survival. Intense characters who stand out page after page make this thriller very difficult to put down. I can't wait for the Frank Renzi book to come out. Four stars out of a possible five stars for, "Sniper". A series not to be missed for any reason. Check it out.

A sniper kills, a shoplifter shoplifts, and New Orleans is in a frenzy. Of course they have a few close calls. Of course they end up together. On the other side, we have the NOPD trying to stop the murder and mayhem, and trying to stop the killing of foreign dignitaries. Add in the police brass, pressure from the mayor and businesses, some love affairs, and you have a pretty interesting story.

Held my interest

This story had two interesting plot lines...The plot to assassinate the French president and the love story between the 2 criminals. I found myself wanting the sniper to live. He seemed to be redeemable. Very exciting ending.

A very multiple faceted cop story

A very interesting and multifaceted police story with a lot of human interest bylines that made the story compelling and very realistic.
