With the off-grid setting of the Amazon rainforest, exacerbated by the time period (no satellite or mobile phones), this series continues to explore the mystery of the unknown so brilliantly captured in Leo's Aldebaran books. The story feels all the more vivid for it, not least because the figure Kathy is so interested in appears to be not of this Earth.
Now on foot, accompanied by Captain Délio, Kathy is trying to catch up with the Germans amongst the tangled tributaries of the river. Unknown to her, the Germans are hopelessly lost and in grave danger, and much closer than she realises.
In a parallel narrative, Oscar and Clyde are seeking answers in Romania, but drawing unwanted attention in the process.Quite where this arc will take us isn't clear, but you can't help but feel these two gents are running out of luck.
The peril is palpable, the characters interesting, and the mystery intriguing, and this is just the halfway mark. Fingers crossed that remaining two books deliver on their promise.
