Pleasingly integrated text and illustrations combine to tell the story Sweden and its people. Everyone knows at least something about the violent Viking era. Most of us have at least a vague (if oversimplified) impression of the modern, pacifistic, semi-socialist Swedish nation state. This book does a decent job illuminating the little-known historical evolution between those extremes, with an emphasis on the Stormakstiden, or "era of great power:" the brief but dramatic period straddling the 17th and 18th centuries, during which Sweden emerged from the continental periphery to contend against Britain, France, Austria, Prussia, and Russia for the military, economic, and cultural supremacy of Europe.

I rate A History of Sweden, by Lars Lagerqvist, as a better than satisfactory introduction to this somewhat neglected subject.

I didn't read it all, but I REALLY liked what I did read. For a study literature, it sure is interesting. It's very well written and has some pieces of information that are so fun to read about. Now let's hope I get a good grade. :D
