I'm a fan of this comic series so when I saw that there's an available reading copy, I grabbed the chance to download it right away. I've read the first two issues of Dead of Winter last year and I still haven't read the last two, which I'm really thankful that are included in this compilation.
Dead of Winter: Good Good Dog
If you love watching or reading that are zombie-themed stories, and if you are a dog lover just like I do, you will undoubtedly this graphic novel. I'm just a little bit sad that it's just a 4-issue comic series because I'm going to miss reading the "super dog", Sparky, and his heroic acts to save the good people around him. I don't normally give away spoilers, but for those who want to know if Sparky died in the end, I assure you that you'll smile after you finish reading this.

You'd think that a Labrador with a red cape and a katana slashing zombies would be awesome.

You'd be right. But he's the only awesome thing about this graphic novel.
I came for Sparky and stayed for Sparky. Nothing much else.

Sparky the dog saved the day and my rating.

Dialogue: cheesy at best
"Zombies? I mean, we could've been hiding from dragons in a cave or, hell, I don't know, casting spells at tree people or something but we are...goddamn zombie apocalypse."

It's the zombie apocalypse. A group of people are housed together against hoards of zombies. Nothing new. There is very little character to the people in this comic and they have the classic "Oh this is a horrible situation but if we stand together we can overcome anything" conversation.

You're thrown slapdash in the middle of a world with a very crass art-style. And it's really gross. I mean it's not a quirky redeeming crass like the Crow.

Image result for the crow comic

It's just off-putting:

There's also a crazy police cop who charges survivors for stealing from malls. It's really weird and not convincing.

But did I mention Sparky? Sparky is the best. He has nuances and he's just a goddam hero. He has flashbacks, character development and regrets. Sparky's hate for zombies is rooted in a deeply troubled past.

I'll recommend this book for:
1)People who love dogs and dog character development (which is probably not a thing).
2) Not for people who like good zombie stories.

Excuse me. I'm going to go put a red cape on my Labrador.

Lassie meets the Walking Dead. An offbeat zombie story about a group of people running from a brain damaged cop during the zombie apocalypse. Given a major assist by a dog with Lassie's brains and Krypto's body. Weird, absurd, off kilter, but I kind of liked it.

I was almost immediately hooked on when I saw the cover, as I'm such a sucker for a good zombie comic book. Generally speaking,, it was good fun. On the positive note, it showed that authors are interested in the zombie narratives and it was fun for them to make this. I honestly liked this part of the book. If you have spare twenty minutes, I'd actually recommend this book.

However this was somehow disappointment for me. It seemed amateur at best. I felt like the artwork need some improvement as well, especially regarding faces. They seemed satirical from time to time.
Back to the story, it was really predictable and dull, especially, for somebody who read so many zombie books/graphic novels. As I said it gave me big time school project vibes. And I wasn't aware that you can make a Mary Sue out of a dog (which is honestly not that surprising, actually).

Yet another zombie comic, except here the lynchpin of the valiant band of survivors is a dog in a cape. And you know, I love Rick and Carl and Michonne, but a dog in a cape is always better. Sparky seems to be somewhere between Lassie and Krypto - or did he just play that role on TV? - but boy, that dog sure hates zombies. Also, because it's by Kyle 'Sexcastle' Starks, everything else in the story teeters forever on the blurred line separating the kick-ass from the absurd, although I guess this metaphor implies something which is one usually can't be the other, and that's foolish because in a Kyle Starks story most things are both. Well, except the reprobate in the Santa suit. He's mostly just a dick.

From the beginning you can tell this is a Kyle Starks book. And the artist really matches the storytelling very well. This was a quick and enjoyably fun read about zombies and I love zombie stories!

It's a zombie horror comedy about a group of people trying to survive the apocalypse and a dog that defies physics in how he saves people. You want him to take on a horde of zombies without a scratch? He's got it. You want him to pull people from explosive wrecks? He's got it. You want anything? Yeah, he's got it. Don't try to make sense of it. This is a good dog. This is Krypto's gold retriever cousin. This book can border on a bit too goofy but screw it, it's a zombie apocalypse being held off by a dog! That's reason enough to have fun with it. And the flashbacks to Sparky's past are great, seeing who he was before and how the world has changed is unique when it's seen from a famous dog's perspective instead of a normal person's.

This was good fun.

It is the zombie apocalypse and a group of survivors are managing to eke out an existence in a camp they have made. It is winter and supplies are getting low. There is very little hope for their survival unless they forage for food and weapons beyond the safe confines of their camp.

This is a hopeless life but they have one thing which stands between them and total annihilation and that is Sparky - stunt dog turned zombie killing machine!

The artwork is good and the story has a great pace and amusing dialogue. Definitely a good series to be following.

Love the concept of a dog who saves the day again and again during the zombie apocalypse.

"That dog hates zombies!"

Unfortunately, the execution of the art and story is just a bit too amateurish and sloppy, falling short of the b-movie level of schlock for which I think they were aiming. And it's not funny enough to cover up the fact that the events of the story make little sense.

I was unaware until after I had finished the book that it is based on a board game. I usually try to avoid game adaptations and spin-offs, and that rule would have served me well here.

Very epic comic of a zombie-fighting dog, he’s the star of the comic, and he also used to be a TV star, so that’s fun, because while he fights zombies, he has flashbacks of his life before the apocalypse. Other than that we see a typical zombie story, with survivors trying to live, scouting for food and medicines and encountering dangers whenever they go. This is good for a quick read if you’re into zombies.

This book had me at the first sentence of the summary. I avoid 90% of zombie stuff... this falls in the other 10%. Which means I actually enjoyed it. Also, if you ever wanted to know how a dog fights off zombies with a katana...

My review was first posted on Northern Plunder, you can read more of my reviews there too.

I was browsing NetGalley on a day I really shouldn’t have – a day I was submitting reviews to help get me to that sweet 80%.

I figured a quick glance at the graphic novels would be safe.

However, there ready to be read was Dead of Winter.

I.E. the board game that my boyfriend gifted me last year. That we play as much as we can when I visit.

And it featured and starred our favourite character Sparky the dog.

Um yess I was going to download it.

Story wise its pretty straight forward and there was a decent amount of nods to the game.

Focusing on surviving, coming across other characters, dealing with the consequences of whether to save them or not, searching for supplies to keep the group happy, and of course the zombies.

Sparky was a key character even though the majority of the graphic novel wasn’t from his point of view. We got to see a bunch of his flashbacks to help understand how he knew how to save people, the lives he’d saved and lost, and why he is still such a good good boy.

He a very good boy. All the pets for sparky.

One of my favourite nods to the game is the use of the same damage tokens that appear in game. If you recieve 3 of the red blood drops you’re dead and a blue frostbite that indicates you’ll take a damage per turn unless healed.

I think my biggest gripe is that the art wasn’t really my favourite. I felt Sparky was done to a better standard when compared to people. It wasn’t terrible its just not like my usual graphic novel choices – where I pick stuff up because the art is pretty and appealing to me.

I’m glad I still gave it a chance regardless. I read this is one sitting whilst waiting for food.

This was based on a game. The premise sounded interesting, so I thought I’d check it out.

But right off the bat, you get the feeling that there’s too much “inspiration” here. Of course, there’s the Walking Dead stuff (though I’ve only seen the first season). Rucker reminds me of Merle immediately. Instead of the main good guy being a sheriff, he’s a fireman. My girlfriend was just watching Scrubs, so as soon as Carla says, “Oh, Hell no.” I can’t not see Carla from Scrubs.

I wasn’t really a fan of the art. It looks very self-published; not used to what I’m seeing from Oni. And to be honest, I wasn’t much of a fan of the writing either. It seemed kind of slapped together.

There were 2 parts that made me laugh. The “mother lode” they found was pretty funny - and probably had some truth to it.

But overall, I wasn’t really into it. Based on this, I wouldn’t get the game. But the ad for the game made it look like the graphics were better than they are in the comic.

Thanks to NetGalley and Oni Press for a copy in return for an honest review.

Kyle Starks writes a comic that is far better than a book based on a board game has any right to be.

My Review:
First let me say that I wasn't really sure what to expect from this book, but I'm really glad I got the chance to read it. I love the cover, and the art style of the entire book is just refreshing and nice to look at. It's super gory, but it reminds me of a cartoon at the same time, you know? It's a good balance. I like how everything is laid out too.

The book starts off with three people trapped in the living room of a house, looking out the window at the front yard, which is infested with zombies. They have no idea what to do, and desperately need a superhero to save the day. Little do they know, exactly that is coming their way. A truck pulls up with two people in it, Gabriel Diaz and Ruckus Burley, along with a dog with a cape. He knocks at the door and hands them a note, which says that the his name is Sparky, that he's a good good boy and you can trust him, and that they should run towards the nice man waving. They do, and narrowly escape with the three's help. They live at a colon in an old government warehouse, and although supplies are running short, everyone's still alive to give their opinions when they get back. This book is just really wild, and I loved every bit of it. It's exciting and I couldn't wait to see what happened next. Definitely check it out if you get the chance.

I've played the Dead of Winter board game a number of times. Not so much that I've gone through all the incidents, but enough of them to recognize the few. The big thing to remember going into this is that Sparky the Wonderdog is ridiculous.

What I didn't like: How the ever loving eff do you have Dead of Winter graphic novel and not have it contain the best character: Mike Cho, professional Ninja?! I was also a little bummed because if you look at the artwork used in the board game it has some very detailed art design. When you flip open the graphic novel? I mean its better than I can do, but it seems kinda simple, base, and lacking in detail. Monstress this is not. I won't say I was put off by the art, but it was a little more underwhelming than I was expecting.

What I did like: There is a clear appreciation to the source material here, The characters that I recognized had personalities indicative to what I remember from the game. Little nuances such as the bite and frostbite tokens when a character is hurt would pop up and make me smirk. They reference being "voted out of the colony" one of the mechanics of the game. So there is a clear appreciation here.

But this comic needed to do one thing right, and it fuckin' nails it: Sparky can do literally anything. Throughout the comic he constantly befuddles the survivors he's with with his zombie killing prowess, with an ever more impressive series of ridiculous feats it culminates by recreating one of our most hilarious sparky moments when he finally saves the day in the most hilarious of fashions (something we had happen in game once) which I completely loved.

It was a fun romp in the world of Dead of Winter, There can be improvements, but I would read another of these. Put in friggen Mike Cho. 3 stars.

Man, that dog really DOES hate zombies.

This is pretty great. Another Kyle Starks book that goes along the lines of "What if I could write my version of a movie trope?" In this case, the Lassie/Air Bud doggo who is probably more human than dog, except he's awesome, so he's probably more dog than human.

When you read something like this, you're always face with one problem: Are you thinking about anything other than "Is this fucking dog going to die in horrific fashion?" I mean, there's really no such thing as a dog dying in non-horrific fashion. I guess the thing where the vet comes and does the injection thing at home isn't horrific, it just sucks.

But if you wanted to make a zombie movie with really high tension, throw in a beautiful, lovable golden retriever, and put him in danger over and over.

There's a great laugh in this book when the doggo pulls off a move, no spoilers, that was just hilarious.

Good job, Kyle Starks. Good Good Job.

'Dead of Winter: Good Good Dog' by Kyle Starks with art by Gabo is a graphic novel based on a tabletop game.

The zombie apocalypse can be rough but when you have an amazing dog like Sparky, things can be a little easier. Sparky, who is a former TV stunt dog, hates zombies with a vehemence. When the people around Sparky are dumb enough to find themselves in a jail and an abandoned mall, Sparky may come to the rescue, wielding a katana in his mouth, so he can kill even more zombies.

I'm not familiar with the board game, but the premise is basic zombie survival with the same kind of stereotyped characters. The reason to read this is to see how ridiculous this dog is at killing. I would have liked better art.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Oni Press and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

Sparky a good ol dog , is surviving the winter apocoalypse full of zombies . The TV show stunt dog has turned into a zombie killing machine and just wants to get hugs from the people he is protecting . Will Sparky be able to keep his people safe .
The characters in the graphic novel are well written. Sparky is a cross between best friend and a zombie killing machine . All he wants is family and scratches . The story is good and you are taken on an adventure that will have you cheering . The illustrations are well drawn and I love the way the author took them . The dialogue is a bit cheesy at times but that's what makes it such a cute comic. Its a different take on the zombie apocalypse . This is a fun book that will have you reading all night long

**Big thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this one!**

I'm loving this dog, and this dog seriously HATES zombies! It has its moments of funny, and its moments of dead serious. (get it, dead???)

Ok, ok. Great artwork in here, I did like the story, and especially enjoyed the extra cover art at the end. But there isn't much development of any characters. It's like a glossed over walking dead reboot.

I am going to want to see more of this series, because there are loose ends. It felt the end of this was just too quick. Too much buildup, but if there will be more to come, that's going to work itself out.

The best zombie book I've read since the Walking Dead.

This book is great! It made me laugh, it made me filch, it made me miss the old walking dead. This book is about a zombie apocalypse, not just a dog. People just trying to get by and live their lives after the dead return. It was a lot funnier then I expected but that doesn't make it any less scary. Really liked the concept behind it, really glad it wasn't completely centered around the dog. THE ENDING KILLED ME. lots of feels, but I cant tell if its set up for a second volume. That's totally fine though, everything came full circle, I wouldn't mind if this was the only one instead of them running it into the ground.

[This review is based on an advance copy]
I've got mixed feeling about this. I thought Sexcastle was a laugh riot, but Starks's humor seems muted here. You get flashes of it, but my expectations were kinda high going into it. That would be the biggest selling point for something like this, since the plot doesn't really deviate from what's standard for the genre. Yes, the hero dog is a unique and unusual (and welcome) addition, but taken as a whole, the story follows convention a bit too much for my liking.

I'm going to guess this is the only case of a comic book being inspired by a board game. As a fan of the game, I found the many little references to gameplay written into the story very clever and amusing. If you are not familiar with the board game this is based on, this will seem pretty standard zombie apocalypse stuff - though with a quirky focus on the dog as the lead character. The art style is interesting - very cartoony, almost childlike for a story that is so drenched in violence and gore. I thought it worked, but I could see many being put off by it.

The artist should take some classes on how to draw human faces. His artwork is amateurish and really doesn't help a story which is already weak by itself.

The only thing that makes sense in this - sort of - is the main protagonist, Sparky. But it took me a little to understand what was going on with him. Seeing him with a katana was fun, though.

The rest was just weird, starting from the zombie cop who's totally out of himself. Even the human side characters were weak.

Not sure I'd recommend this to anyone.

Well, I came to this knowing nothing about the board game, or any of the other characters, books and so on there might be out there trying to build a franchise with it. But I left these pages greatly illuminated – I know now that all zombie stories need a drunken Santa, and/or considerations of tampons, from now on. Really good fun, and the artwork (especially the palette) is great too. Four and a half stars.

Pretty disappointed with this. I was hoping this would be an actually good zombie comic (I'm NOT a fan of The Walking Dead comics) but it was pretty mediocre. Though the idea of following a dog wasn't a bad one, but the story ended up being much more about the people around the dog, and was really a pretty typical zombie story (which has been done to death over the last decade or so). The art was pretty terrible on top of everything else. I had a hard time wanting to finish it.
