Best friends since they were seven years old, Micky and Eli are as different as night and day. She’s withdrawn, shielded, careful. He’s open, reachable, outgoing.
They take care of each other, protect each other, love each other. But he doesn’t know about her secrets. Dark, horrifying, deadly. He doesn’t know that she harbors a darkness not of her own choosing. In his mind, she’s just Micky.
But sometimes, innocence is lost and the darkness that takes its place controls us.
WARNING Contains references to rape and has one instance of animal cruelty.
Wow! So totally not what I expected. I didn’t read the synopsis because I love Lisa K. Miller’s writing, so jumped in with both feet. Ms. Miller does an amazing job with this short story, it’s dark, intense and gripping! Be warned, there are a couple of things that might cause triggers for those who have suffered abuse.
