With Lionheart as the new alpha, the streets of London are quiet. But above the realm, mischief is brewing.
While airship pirates are a common plague upon the kingdom, the Airship Fenrir proves particularly troublesome--especially on a full moon.
Clemeny must take to the skies before these shape-shifting Vikings kick off a new Ragnarok. Easier said than done now that she's down one good eye, a partner, and not to mention the fact that she gets motion sick.
On top of that, the new scar across her face makes Clemeny feel like she'll have better luck intimidating her foes than finding a beau. But Agent Edwin Hunter, recently assigned as head of Clemeny's division, is proving to be an interesting prospect. Despite her apprehensions, it's up to Agent Louvel to chase Fenrir across the heavens.
Alphas and Airships is a retelling of the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale set in Melanie Karsak's bestselling steampunk universe. Alphas and Airships is Book 2 in the Steampunk Red Riding Hood series.
New York Times and USA Today best-selling historical fantasy author Melanie Karsak is the author of the Celtic Blood series, Steampunk Red Riding Hood, Steampunk Fairy Tales, the Road to Valhalla Series, and other works of fantasy and fiction. The author currently lives in Florida with her husband and two children.
Werewolves over Scotland :) Red Riding Hood, Raven pirates, mechanical airships, and Werewolf action.
“Well, we are talking about an airship full of werewolves. Could anything sound less believable?”
What worked for me in Red Riding Hood #2 *The addition of Norse mythology, Thor's Hammer, and Fenrir *Humor: Zayde Skollson is the 'alpha of the aether'. And of course werewolves speak Norwegian! *Red's sixth sense usually works, but it's not always reliable *Lily Stargazer the infamous female airship pilot. No one is faster! *References to Lord Byron and Shakespeare, for the vibes *Queen Victoria continues to be an awesome character *I love Melanie Karsak's fluid writing style. *Clockwork Faeries *Agent Hunter's biceps *Being a werewolf hunter, not a werewolf lover (at least not yet ;))
Series: Steampunk Red Riding Hood #2 Rating: 4 stars - It was really good
Clemeny’s new case involves tracking down airship pirates who are werewolves. She is still adjusting to her new scars and lack of vision but she is determined to capture some viking werewolf airpirates.
Alphas and Airships was another action packed adventure for Clemeny. I really enjoyed seeing more of this world and all the different modes of travel in it. Clemency was just as dangerous and lethal with her new disability. I liked that while she was never vain about her looks, she still struggles to deal with the new scars and the loss of her sight in one eye.
Clemeny is also given a new partner for this adventure and I enjoyed Agent Harper. She was smart, resourceful, and determined. I hope we see more of her in the future stories because I think she will make a good Agent and partner.
I was slightly disappointed that there isn’t a continuation of Clemeny and Richard in this book. Instead we get hints of a potential relationship with someone else and I am interested in seeing where that will go. Overall, this was a great sequel and I can’t wait to see what mission she will be going on next.
It might be more peaceful in London now with Lionheart as the alpha. But Scotland is not so lucky. The threat lurks in the aether, hiding in the clouds and pirating, assaulting unsuspecting merchant vessels. Clemeny is paired up with agent Harper - talented but inexperienced in the field. Facing the threat of flying werewolves, the Vikings, is not an easy mission, and anyone can get hurt in the process. But Clemeny never gives up, chasing her prey, following the magic, and trying to solve her relationship issues on the way.. A very quick read, the story being an enchanting mixture of fantasy, steampunk, and fairytale retellings. The Red Cape society is an interesting concept of supernatural hunters and protectors of the land, serving directly under the queen. Mythological creatures an characters (in)famous from other stories appear and disappear on the scene, creating a story full of tension, adventure, and entertainment. Although Clemeny's world is dangerous, its charms cannot be neglected, and I fell for Little Red in an instant, in the first book, and won't give up until the last page telling her very interesting story. Already looking forward to the next installment.
"My stomach, however, reminded me that I needed to get back on the ground first before I started thinking of putting anything in my stomach." Annoying. At the end it should just say "it" not stomach. "It wouldn’t due (should be do) to have anyone glancing this way." Good story but author needs better editors
just as good as the first one. Was a little (VERY) disappointed that there was no follow-up to Lionheart and Clemeny, but the idea of a budding romance with agent hunter is something I can get behind. (Still holding a torch for you, richard ☺️). Each of these books feels like going on an adventure with friends I'm loving them.
Alphas and Airships is book two in this kick ass, Steampunk, Gaslamp, Urban Fantasy series set in Victorian London and it is not to be missed!
Little Red is back on the job, this time hunting viking werewolves that have taken to pirating the skies above the UK! The tale takes Clemeny outside of London and up to Edinburgh where we get to meet the Scottish version of the Red Cape Society - Shadow Watch - as well as being introduced to some new paranormal beasties, and getting to romp around the highlands and islands!
It's a fast-paced tale that swoops and soars amongst the airships and delivers a satisfying story. We meet Clemeny's new boss (niiiice), experience some personal disappointment in the romance department (boo, Lionheart, boo!!!!) and gain some interesting hints towards Clemeny's heritage!
Oh, and we get more of young Queen Victoria who is awesome, btw...
I'm loving this series so far and will immediately be marching onto the next one!
Series Info/Source: This is the second book in the Steampunk Red Riding Hood series. I borrowed this through Kindle Unlimited.
Story (4/5): The airship Fenrir is plaguing the skies, robbing merchant ships and Queen Victoria wants it stopped. The task is given to Clemeny who has a new partner, Agent Harper. Agent Harper is much more used to paperwork but has special intellectual qualities that may help Clemeny on her mission. When Clemeny finds out that Fenrir is run by Viking werewolves things really get interesting.
Characters (4/5): Celmeny is a fun, yet flawed, character and I generally enjoy her antics. I didn’t enjoy all the time she spent dwelling about how ugly her scar made her look or all her inner thoughts about needing a man to sate her feelings of lust. Aside from that though, she is reckless and fun and trying to be a better person. I also liked that we are starting to get a bit more depth to Clemeny’s past.
Agent Harper was a fun addition, she is more of a bookish type but ends up being very resourceful and I hope she is in future stories. You see very little of Agent Hunter or Lionheart in this story. However, you do meet some fun new types of creatures...I enjoyed the parts with a certain kelpie and hope he is in future stories. Lily Stargazer also features in the end of the story (no, I haven’t read Lily’s series quite yet).
Setting (3/5): I liked the setting but am a bit confused sometimes at how everything ties together. Here we meet kelpies and there is also discussion about Druids. Sometimes it feels like Karsak is just throwing everything into these books whether it be from literature, Norse mythology, fae folklore or even Arthurian legend. It leaves my head spinning a bit and every time I feel like I get a grip on the world it shifts. This is one of those series where I have learned to just go with it and enjoy it, don’t think too much about how it all fits together or else I will be frustrated. However, it would be nice to know that somehow these books are planned out and they will actually fit together at some point.
Writing Style (4/5): This is well written and easy to read. This is just one of those fun and light reads. I do feel like everything here could be a bit more polished and has so much potential. The world is almost there but is a bit too variable. The characters are fun but a bit too scattered and could use more history. The story is a lot of fun but sometimes tied up too conveniently. Karsak does a great job with action scenes and her dialogue is snappy and fun.
My Summary (4/5): Overall this was a fun read and I enjoyed it. These are great, light steampunk reads with a lot of action, they are quick to read and entertaining. I think this series could be amazing if the world is developed a bit more consistently and the characters are given more depth. Sometimes it feels like there’s not a lot of rhyme or reason to the world or the characters that flit around it. I do plan on continuing the series because I enjoy the books. However, everytime I read a book in this series I think “wow, this is almost amazing but not quite”.
A smart steampunk/paranormal story set in Victorian England. Agent Clemeny Louvel has lost her partner, the sight in her left eye, and her beauty while fighting the evil werewolf, Fenrir. She has Fenrir’s pelt as a trophy, but now has a new boss to answer to and must train a new partner.
Mysterious air pirates are preying on ships over Britain and Clemeny has been assigned to track them down. Her new partner has never worked in the field and has no experience with the paranormal that roam the isle. It’s up to Clemeny to train the novice agent while working to track down the pirates. This becomes even trickier when she discovers that they, like Fenrir, are werewolves with a wickedly fast airship and an uncanny ability to sniff out the most precious cargo, some of it belonging to the Queen herself.
The characters are well defined and the Victorian setting is described in realistic detail, even down to the steamships that plow the skies. The dialogue is smart and well paced, and the story moves along at a good clip. Clemeny is a strong female lead who is fearless in her pursuit of an objective. I enjoyed her relationship with her young intern, as well as the hint of a more than professional relationship with her new boss.
Great read for those who love steampunk and the paranormal.
Like, I didn't expect much - rather Yet Another Stereutype Romance Historical Fantasy - but I got dissapointed in best of ways.
Clemeny is resolute, competent, and just a nice character to read about, no strange love interests loitering around, airship VIkings were a good idea, and narrative was well paced, interesting, and very well-tought. Good, good, please gimme me more ;)
An interesting book , kind of different , but I liked it. A light read filled with action and mysterious characters . Enjoyable way to spend a quiet Sunday afternoon
Things have settled down in London since Clemeny took out Fenrir. She's even on the mend if not adjusted to the near loss of sight she has suffered and certainly not the scars. The new tech is nifty though. Quinn is getting by but will never return, not a happy prospect for Clemeny Louvel. She dreads the day the new boss decides it's time for a partner again. Mmmm. The new boss, straight from Scottland, Hunter, decidedly yummy if uptight in Clemeny's opinion, but will anyone ever look on her face again with affection? However even though London's streets are peaceful under the new werewolf alpha Lionheart, in the airstream lurks hidden danger. Pirates! Not just any normal air pirates either, werewolf pirates! Of couse who should be better suited to the task than Little Red? The Society's bavest and possibly most motion sick agent! Will she be able to find and thwart these evil fiends? Join Clemeny Louvel and a well developed cast of new and returning characters in this sequel to Wolves and Daggers! Malanie Karsark gives us a richly envisioned steampunk world that will swallow your imagination whole. Come join the adventure today!
Another AMAZING story from this wonderful author. She is a one click must for me. With the perfect mixture of action, adventure, steampunk, preternatural and of coarse Vikings; this story is a hit! I love Clemeny and how she is both bold and strong, but also flawed and feminine. the premise of this story is so unique and different that it makes the adventure of reading it a completely new experience.
It is loosely based on the tale of Red Riding Hood but it is filled with shape shifting Vikings, and a kick but female. I loved every word! A must read! I received an ARC and am leaving an honest review. Oh, and it can be read as a stand alone, but the experience of this story is heightened with having read Wolves and Daggers first. It is an amazing story as well so there is not real hardship in that! Enjoy.
You had me at Vikings, Melanie! I’m a huge fan of Vikings, so when I realized that Melanie wrote Vikings into her steampunk Red Riding Hood series, I knew I would be smitten. And I was right!
This clever tale has everything: action and adventure, preternaturals, a hint of romance, and steampunk!
Though Clemeny is a badass character, I love that she’s not flawless. With motion sickness, finding and capturing the shape-shifting Vikings isn’t easy. But that makes me love her more.
If you’re a fan and dedicated reader of Melanie Karsak, I promise this book will delight you! And if you’re new to Melanie or to her Steampunk Fairy Tale series, I know you will enjoy this book as well. But go read Wolves and Daggers first.
This is the second instalment in the steampunk Little Red Riding Hood series, and the first of the totally new stories (book one started life as a short story in a boxset before being updated, extended and becoming a book for this series). I loved the premise of this story - pirate werewolves in the airships above England - and the storytelling is excellent, as always. And with guest appearances by Lily Stargazer and her family, and even the Loch Ness Monster, there's plenty of characters to keep you enthralled. So if you love a steampunk story, this is definitely one for you - I just hope the rest of the series comes soon! Ps does anybody know where I can get hold of one of the handy clockwork fairies Lily has? Would be very handy!
HOT ON THE TRAIL!!! Hey guy, pull up a chair, sit a while. This is a refreshing spin on lil' red. Yep! Not just a little girl off to grandmas. Nope, this is willing, ready and able to kick some good a**. No joke this is one feisty, smart and smooth operator. You have all of the action packed, fast paced and more drama than a sane person could handle. Good thing I'm not sane. The characters and scenes were realistic, intriguing and complex. Twists, turns and unexpected surprises that kept me captivated from start. Melanie weaves a world around you until everything else ceases to exist. Your pulled in so deeply that everything has the realism you'd find out in the real world. Phenomenal job Melanie and thanks for sharing this little guy with us.
Wonderful reading. Adventure, just the whisper of romance, and comedy. This is a great twist on the Red Riding Hood fairy tale. “Red” is a girl who works for a secret government agency that hunts down dangerous werewolves, vampires, ghosts, and other fantastic creatures of myth. The government agency uses the red capes as a sort of uniform. Characters are well developed. Red is funny and smart and brave with an unknown background that makes for an interesting mystery. I’ve read all the books in the series except the one that just came out (Howls and Hallows). I highly recommend them all.
This was a great addition to the first book. I love following Clemeny and her adventures. This time she is trying to find out what Werewolf is causing trouble in the skies. Though she gets bad motion sickness she has a job to do. There is a new Agent/Boss in town and I can't wait to see if anything happens between him and Clemeny. Clemeny is such a badass and she is fun to read about. I can't wait to read more more about Clemeny and the Agency.
Clemeny, aka Little Red, Louvel works as an agent for the red cape society. They hunt werewolves steampunk style. This is the second in the series and pirates are attacking airships on the trade routes. It's not long before Agent Louvel is after them with a new temporary partner. It seems the skies have a new alpha and he must be stopped. It's a great ride along the way while reading this book. I'm hooked! I've read the first and second book and I'll definitely be reading the next one.
Little Red takes on raiding Vikings! A wonderful blend of magic and science, as any steampunk story should be! I couldn’t put this tale down once I started, and I’m looking forward to reading book 3… however, I will have to add Melanie Karsak’s airship series to my “to-read” list - too much of this tale takes place in the air and although not necessary to enjoy this book, it will make rereading “Alphas and Airships” that much better.
Sigh. I miss Lily. She will always be my favorite. That being said, I really like this series. Clemony is a really cool character. I love that about Melanie Karsak's writing. She creates these incredible, strong female characters. Even though they exist in these crazy situations/worlds, her characters are completely relatable. They have their own problems and quirks that we can all understand. I highly recommend this series and all of Karsak's books.
Stumbked on these by lucky accident. I'm addicted. I can't wait to start the third books. And then try all the other series too. I live that I have options. 😀😀. I am obsessed with little red. She's so adorable and snarky. And my kind of girl. I hope love is in her future. I feel it would make it complete. Especially with the recent damage she suffered. Keep up the good work. A new faithful follower!! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Melanie Karzai has a way of writing steampunk that keeps you enthralled and on the edge of your proverbial seat. The mechanics aren't so out there that you have to guess what they do but they are still above what they had for the times. Love this series.
I received an advanced copy and this is my honest review. I really like Little Red, she is spunky and fearless. In this book we get a few hints about what Clemeny may be. I'm thinking Druid or fae. This book was fast paced and enjoyable to read. You even get to meet the Lock Ness Monster! I would recommend this to all. Cannot wait for the next book.
Wow,this book is full on clever!! Great main and supporting characters and plot (with nods to some historical figures)Off the rails action, and witty humor! What else could you want?? I know! THE NEXT BOOK,PLEASE!!!
