I love the BALM program’s straightforward steps to find (and be!) the peace while a loved one is struggling with addiction. I am especially drawn to the idea that I can love and support my loved ones while still taking care of myself~ and that, most importantly, if I take care of myself and focus on that, I can also be our loved one’s best hope for stability, safety and sobriety. There are a lot of very actionable ideas in this easy to read book, and I have found more peace in the short time that I’ve been learning about and following the steps. I do wish the book had a tighter structure at times.
I like the BALM concept which I was introduced to while listening to a podcast. I immediately purchased the book with high hopes. While there is some useful information in the book, it spends way too much time on reviews of the program and trying to convince people to become a BALM coach. As someone with a loved one who abuses alcohol, I was hoping for more conversational examples, educational information, and a discussion on the link between use disorders and mental health. The book could have been half the size and just as helpful.
I received a copy of this when i did a balm class. I thought it had helpful strategies for dealing with a loved one's addiction. It has helped me to process through addiction in a different way.
