Saadat Hasan Manto (Urdu: سعادت حسن منٹو, Hindi: सआदत हसन मंटो), the most widely read and the most controversial short-story writer in Urdu, was born on 11 May 1912 at Sambrala in Punjab's Ludhiana District. In a writing career spanning over two decades he produced twenty-two collections of short stories, one novel, five collections of radio plays, three collections of essays, two collections of reminiscences and many scripts for films. He was tried for obscenity half a dozen times, thrice before and thrice after independence. Not always was he acquitted. Some of Manto's greatest work was produced in the last seven years of his life, a time of great financial and emotional hardship for him. He died a few months short of his forty-third birthday, in January 1955, in Lahore.

It's such a shame that Manto spent just a few years in the then nascent Indian film industry. This book contains his reminiscences of the then popular figures, which have now almost been forgotten. It'd be so much fun to read Manto write about a Rajesh Khanna or Amitabh Bachchan. How about Guru Dutt and Waheeda? Manto obviously to a great extent fictionalizes accounts, he surely cannot know the way 2 lovers held hands in a clandestine meeting but he is so much fun anyway.

We get to know the unknow highly sexual and polygamous side of Sitara Devi, the rustiness of Ashok Kumar, the comeliness of Nargis and the pointed nose of Kuldip Kaur. There are more characters like Shyam who would be difficult to trace now in the annals of film history but who make for such juicy read.

Manto talks about the columns he used to write, if only they could be dug up...

Saadat Hasan Manto was a storyteller (अफ़साना-निगार) and this book is just an apt example of converting a gossip column into a biographical narrative. 'Meena Bazar' depicts the lives of the famous actress of 1940's Bombay Film Industry. It is a sharp, witty, intrusive, and yet humane account filled with sharp insights in a few places.

Manto's grammar consists of unabashed, unconcerned truth. He writes as he feels and speaks. His stories are bound to leave an impression on you.
However, I did not come to any of these conclusions reading this book.
Meena Bazaar as I realize was penned before the partition before Manto became the Manto that we popularly know of today. The mature, rightfully angry, traumatized of having to live through the division of a country Manto. His language is still impeccable, his sense of humor still razor-sharp.

You have to just remember the name- सआदत हसन मंटो. Rarely a book written by him can be said a bad or an average book. His style of writing is just amazing.

It's a kind of non-fiction book in which Manto writes about his days during working in Bombay film city. He writes about the incidents of Ashok kumar, Nargis & many others.

Books & stories written by him in the time of 1940s & 50s, are still as or more popular.

Insightful and revealing. At times, it is even disturbing to know so much about people. Real people. These are not Manto's fiction stories. These are real people he is talking about. I was astounded by the frankness of the language and the perspectives he throws. Manto doesn't give you the generosity of his words. But his intentions seem benevolent.

A collection of short stories with a very upfront and straight forward portrayal of characters. The language is simple. The thoughts are clear. It takes you to those times of Indian cinema, completely unknown to a person of my generation.
