Gabe D’Angelo has it all. Designer clothes, luxury cars, a cool confidence most would envy, and a never-ending supply of money—and men. When he arrived in Haven’s Cove to be there for his best friend, he never imagined he’d end up extending his stay indefinitely. Small town living isn’t so bad after all, and the views are magnificent—especially the view of a sexy, rugged blond. But when that mysterious, brooding man refuses all Gabe’s advances, he is forced to take a step back and truly look at the person he’s become.
Nate Black moved from Boston to Haven’s Cove for his family. He’s missed small town living and the simple, tranquil life that comes with it. What he doesn’t bargain for is the pushy, spoiled playboy who’s set his eyes on Nate as his next conquest. Knowing this man has the potential to crack the foundation of his quiet life, Nate will do everything he can to protect his safe, closed-off world.
Is one man worth loving? Is the other worth the sacrifice? Or is the love they’re searching for not just hard to get but completely out of reach?
I loved this one even more than I'd enjoyed book one in the series. For me, the push/pull between Gabe and Nate had a frison to it which was slowly amped up as the narrative expanded.
Gabe had caught my attention in Book One so I was really pleased to get his story now and it was a lot more complicated than his outward surface revealed. Deep inside, Gabe was desperate to find someone to love and for someone to want to love him in return.
In Nate he picked - under some duress from the other man at first - his perfect partner. Nate was a grumpy git, quick to fly off the handle and judgemental, treating Gabe poorly because he reminded him of someone who'd hurt him badly in the past.
Thankfully Nate didn't stay stubborn for long as he gradually realised that Gabe was a truly special person and nothing like the shallow man he'd first thought. I love that the book cover reflects the scene where Nate finally got his act in gear, leading to a truly delicious snog against a tree!
While I enjoyed Brody and Owen's story in Book One, this just resonated more with me and I was firmly rooting for both men! Now I'm desperate for Jonah and Cameron's story which will be in Book Three and hopefully not too far away!
#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review
Oh, my Gucci! I adored this story, and I LOVE me some Gabe!
I have been completely impressed with Jaclyn Quinn's writing, right from the get go, the characters and relationships and friendships are complex and well-written, the chemistry between the two MCs is just scorchingly hot, and the emotion and build up to any climax and resolution is handled pretty well. (Word of warning - the conflicts tend to border on what could blow up into a big misunderstanding, it skirts that line for me in this one especially.)
I also love me some Jonah, so I'm so glad his story is next. I really enjoyed his moments with Gabe through this story, how he was totally rooting for and protective over Gabe, when everyone else was worried that Gabe would be the heartbreaker.
If you're looking for frenemies to lovers, a cute kid that is fun and not overly precocious, great family and friendship relationships between a group of characters, and some great chemistry, I'd recommend giving this series a try. I've read them all out of order, but I'm glad to be filling in the blanks now.
Sweet romance and a second chance. Our two 35 year olds are a single Dad and a rich playboy. Gabe has led a privileged life but a lonely one. Nate and his daughter Lily, 5, are great, but Nate’s ex husband scarred his heart. Gabe is back in the small town, plus he’s changed. Nate is mean to the old friend, but it is short-lived. Nate and Gabe...
The cast of characters is terrific, the deep emotions are real, and the sexy times are mind-bowing and scorching hot. Lily is adorable, Gabe is so in need of acceptance and love, and Nate screws up, but redeems himself. A smoothly flowing tale of old thoughts being replaced by true happiness. Enjoy !
This was a very frustrating read until Nate got his shit together. When he finally did it was just as sweet and adorable as the first book. I loved Gabe in the first book but in this book, he was even more awesome.
I have to be honest. When I was offered the chance to review Hard to Get, I very nearly turned it down. I read and reviewed the first book in the Haven’s Cove series, Hard to Let Go, and I enjoyed it very much. However, I didn’t particularly care for the character of Gabe. I found him to be arrogant, and when it came to Nate, he progressed beyond flirting to downright obnoxious. Still, I decided to take a chance on this one and I’m glad I did.
Gabe was still hard to like here…in the beginning anyway. I was a little disturbed reading about Gabe’s constant pursuit of Nate and his rather raunchy sexual innuendo, not only to Nate, but to his best friend, Brody, and Brody’s partner, Owen. It was starting to reach the level of creepy. However, Gabe began to grow on me once he realized he was being an ass and started thinking of Nate as a man rather than a conquest.
Gabe D’Angelo has it all. Designer clothes, luxury cars, a cool confidence most would envy, and a never-ending supply of money and men. When he arrived in Haven’s Cove to be there for his best friend, he never imagined he’d end up extending his stay indefinitely. Small town living isn’t so bad after all, and the views are magnificent...especially the view of a sexy, rugged blond.
No matter what anyone else tells him, Gabe D'Angelo is convinced that Nate Black is gay. So what if he's got a wedding ring on his finger? What does it matter if he's overheard the guy talking on the phone in a loving manner to someone named Lily? Neither means he isn't gay, and as far as Gabe's concerned, he intends to make Nate his no matter how hard the thirty-four-year-old contractor pushes him away. The thing is, Nate isn't playing hard to get. He just wants the thirty-five-year-old guy with a silver spoon in his mouth to leave him be. Doesn't he get that Nate isn't the least bit interested in getting together with a spoiled, entitled man like Gabe? But Gabe doesn't take "no" for an answer, and once he set his sights on Nate, there was no turning back for him. Will Nate see past Gabe's wealth and privilege to get to know the caring man that has been there all along?
I really liked this second book in the Haven's Cove series! I was a little worried that I wouldn't like Gabe all that much, mainly because I really liked everything about Nate right away. He was quiet and wary, someone who didn't like being badgered into doing anything. He won me over in the first few chapters. Then the more I got to know Gabe, the quicker he became one of my favorite characters.
Then there was Nate, who was the one I simply wanted to shake. He had preconceived notions about the type of guy Gabe was, thanks to an experience he had gone through a few years before his move from Boston to Haven's Cove. He was slow to trust but even though he already seemed to trust Gabe, making baseless assumptions was what he automatically did. He quickly became frustrating...but I still liked him. Nate was the perfect one for Gabe.
The feeling of community and family was highlighted in this story along with the love that was being shared. Jaclyn Quinn did a fantastic job of putting together a romance that had an "enemies-to-lovers" feel, even though the "enemies" part was one-sided. This is the second book in the series that I've read and see no reason that books this series couldn't be read as standalones or out of order.
A man out for a good time and another man determined to dodge his advances sets the stage for Jaclyn Quinn’s Hard to Get the second book in her Haven’s Cove series. I’ll admit I was curious how this couple’s story would play out, it was hinted at in the first book and I couldn’t wait to find out how these two would end up together. I expected a lot of verbal foreplay and a whole lot of resistance, but Ms. Quinn threw in some very interesting twists and turns making this an intriguing and sexy romance.
Ever since moving to Haven’s Cove all Nate has wanted was to make an honest living and provide for himself and his family. Finding immediate work with someone who’s quality of remodeling and building contracting his own was perfect even if that man’s best friend makes Nate uncomfortable at every turn. Nate has never broadcast his sexuality and in fact has a sure fire way to keep men and women at bay, the wedding ring he wears on his left hand despite no longer being married, but even that hasn’t stopped Gabe from pursing him.
Nate was so closed off and with good reason, I honestly wasn’t sure how Gabe would break through but over time he managed to prove to Nate he could be a friend with no further expectations even though that friendship became more. I liked Nate and Gabe together, I think they balanced each other well with Gabe drawing Nate out and making him live and enjoy life and Nate helping Gabe realize his worth and that he didn’t have to be “on” all the time, he could just be himself.
I liked that they spent some time getting to know one another and shared their history even though it wasn’t very pretty for either one and more than that I loved that Nate’s family was so accepting of them together. While it took them awhile to get physical once they did, these scenes were plentiful and oh so hot.
I appreciate a feel good romance with not a lot of drama and that’s exactly what author Jaclyn Quinn offers readers in Hard To Get.
I bought this on Audible first and then the physical book. By far one of the best stories I've heard, I was mesmerised by the whole plot, could see the scenes in my head, the development of the characters was superb, the chemistry between them was mesmerising, I could't stop, I was savouring every moment, the way that the plot was build perfectly to the climax was just squeezed, well written, and a delight to read and listen! High praises to Jaclyn Quinn for this master piece!!!
On the Audible side, Sean Crisden was spectacular, gorgeous voice, marvellous technique, completely engaged, the acting was astonishing, with the correct intentions that I imagine the writer wanted, fully committed, congratulations for the impressive performance!
This one was a bit better than the first for me and I liked all of the characters including the secondary ones esp. Lily, Nate's daughter. The only thing that I had a hard time with was Gabe having slept with married men. He didn't seem repentant until around the end either. Nate was a hard nut to crack but irl I don't know if he would have even gotten with Gabe or not with his history.
I have to say, there is something about Jacyln Quinn's writing, stories and characters that just pull me in completely. I loved Gabe from the first book. His wit and style made me very curious about this man and his "relationship" tactics.
Well, let's just say, he is nothing like he seems. Honest, sweet and such a devoted friend he is indeed. But there was much more to this man than met the eye and I loved him all the more.
Enter Nate. My heavens, this was also a character who is not at all what he seemed in the first book. His pushback and protective nature was wonderfully developed. And his story is one that I honestly did not see coming. But work it did...and it certainly worked on our sweet Gabe.
As with book one, the dialogue for me feels so natural and the situations never feel contrived. Once again I was drawn into this setting, this cast of characters, their friendships and love for another. The friendship that has been formed between Gabe and Jonah is the perfect example. These two are wonderful together.
I eagerly await Jonah's story...he needs him something amazing and the shy ginger may be absolutely perfect. Can't wait!
An ARC was received from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Really enjoyed this one! This series is a bit higher on the angst scale compared to Jaclyn's Shore Thing series and her most recent book Enzo's Embrace and while I can see at times that this was only her second book, there's just something about her writing that makes me keep reading (even when I should really, really, really stop & go to sleep). She has this wonderful way of creating characters I can't help but fall in love with. Gabe really stole my heart in this one and I can't wait to get to Jonah's story!
After meeting Gabe in Hard to Let Go as Brody’s best friend, I was excited to read his story next. Hard to Get definitely lived up to my expectations, and I loved getting to know beyond the surface with both Gabe and Nate.
While the fronts the two men present are pretty much opposite of each other, they actually have events in their past in common (not the same event, but the same type each). Gabe is outwardly the quintessential playboy, brash and overflowing with innuendos—not just around Nate, but with everyone. He may show this naughty exterior, but he’s really just protecting his heart. Nate is more reserved, keeping to himself and valuing family above all else. He’s been hurt before just like Gabe, though Nate’s hurt also resulted in a lot more responsibility on his shoulders.
Once Gabe is able to make it past Nate’s barriers—first as a friend, and later as more—the two of them slowly build a friendship, eventually turning that into some crazy hot physical intimacy once Nate realizes Gabe’s interactions with Nate’s family are truly heartfelt and have touched both men emotionally.
We get to see returning characters from the first book of the series—it was so good to see them again, and they do play important roles in this story, and do an excellent job of supporting Nate and Gabe. My interest is already piqued for Jonah and Cameron’s story, I really hope that one comes soon! Nate’s parents are great, and his mom is a sneaky one (and thankfully so!). Gabe’s father—not so much. He’s one of those characters that I’m breaking out the word “hate” to describe my feelings.
Another smashing 5 stars for Hard to Get…if you haven’t started reading this author, don’t put it off! Jaclyn Quinn has already landed on my author watch list even though this is just her second book. Though this is the second book in the series, it can be read as a standalone. I personally would recommend reading them in order so you can get Brody and Owen’s story along with your first glimpse at Gabe and Nate since it’s a good setup for this book. Hard to Get is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.
I wasn’t sure what to think of either of these men when I picked this book up. I’ll start with Gabe: At first, I was extremely put off by him. He was too pushy and wouldn’t take no for an answer and I really dislike men who make fools of themselves by throwing themselves at someone who clearly has no interest in them, but I quickly warmed up to Gabe. For as obnoxious as he could be, he was sweet, caring and willing to do anything to protect and help the ones who meant the most to him: His friends. It’s amazing that someone who has grown up in such a cold and unloving environment can turn out to be such a sweet and loving guy. I just wanted to cuddle Gabe.
Nate, ugh, I really disliked Nate. He was a judgmental twat and even after he starts to see the real Gabe and accept him into his and his daughter's lives, I still felt I couldn’t let my guard down. I just didn’t trust him. It took until almost the very end of the book for me to relax and feel confident that he wasn’t going to destroy Gabe. I will say though, he was an amazing father and I absolutely adored his little girl, Lily, who was a complete sweetheart and lit up every scene she was in.
Even though I didn’t let my guard down with Nate, I enjoyed these two men together. They had great chemistry and I liked watching them open up to one another and learn to trust again. Both men have been damaged by past loves and I completely understand why trust didn’t come easy for either of them.
This book also had some great secondary characters, besides just Lily. I loved Owen and Brody, and while I haven’t read their story yet, something I plan to rectify soon, I adored them. I also loved their friend, Jonah, whose story I’ll definitely be looking out for. These guys were great friends and a tremendous support system to Gabe, as well as Nate. I also absolutely adored Nate’s mom, Vicky. She was funny, friendly, spunky and a great cheerleader for Nate and Gabe.
This was an enjoyable read filled with some angst as well as friendship, sweetness, humor, love and plenty of hot sexy times. I’m definitely looking forward to visiting the quaint little town of Haven’s Cove again in the near future. Very recommendable!

I was gifted my copy of this book, direct from the author. That I write a review was not required.
We met Gabe and Nate in book one, Hard to Let Go. You don't NEED to have read that before you read this one, but it will give you a better picture of Haven's Cove and the people in it, and why Gabe is in town. But you SHOULD read it, not least because that is a stunning 5 star debut read, but also because I said you SHOULD!
And this is another STUNNING follow up to that novel!
Gabe is Brody's best friend; brother in all ways but blood. Nate is hired by Brody. When Nate and Gabe meet, Gabe is immediately pulled to Nate. But Nate pushes Gabe away, and keeps pushing but Gabe keeps trying. Until they each see a different side to the other, and think that they can be friends, at least.
While not quite as emotionally devastating to me personally as book one, I absolutely loved this follow up!
Both men have been hurt before, badly and they deal with that in their own way. I'm not saying who does what but know that neither way is right or wrong, but it's right for that person to deal with their past in that way.
When the full extent of Gabe's hurt becomes clear, I cried for him, I really did. I loved that Nate's family showed himhow it should be. Nate's hurt is no less painful, just different.
I loved that it took a single line from a 5 year old to make Gabe see what and WHO he really wants.
"Because that's what daddies do"
I take it back! This book WAS emotionally devastating! It was just in a very VERY different way to book one.
I loved that we got some Brody and Owen and Jonah too. His story is laid out here and I can't wait to read that one. I have a feeling Jonah isn't as happy as he makes out and Cameron?? Well that boy is in a world of hurt already.
I always worry, you know, after reading such a stunning debut novel, that the next book might not be up to par with that book. But I need not have worried here.
Oh, my Gucci! I adored this story, and I LOVE me some Gabe!

Jaclyn Quinn's debut novel is one of my favorite books of the year so far, and I could not be more thrilled that this second book in the Haven's Cove series, Hard to Get, is another winner! I loved Gabe immediately when we met him in the first book, even if I didn't understand him. But I knew there had to be a story there - and indeed there was. One that was more complicated that I anticipated. Nate intrigued me as well, with how quick he was to dismiss Gabe as someone he didn't want to know. I had a feeling this duo would be fiery and intense considering the vehemence with which neither was backing down on their stance. Gabe wanted Nate, Nate wanted nothing to do with Gabe, and things were about to explode. And oh, explode they did.
Gabe is a spoiled, rich playboy from Boston who seems to make it a habit of only going after married "straight" men... but under that façade he is a kind, caring, and loving man with a heart of gold. I adore him, but his story breaks my heart. Nate, on the other hand, is a blue collar worker and single father who has recently moved back with his four-year old daughter Lily to be near his family. From the very beginning, he stays clear of Gabe and is completely unwilling to even acknowledge the man's existence, let alone anything else. I wanted to throttle him a couple of times, but at the same time, I sort of got why he was so adamant once the explanation came out. Nate is a stubborn man with a wall of defenses of EPIC proportions.. so Gabe sure does have his work cut out for him. But thanks to some outside influences and Nate's growing curiosity about the man, maybe.. just maybe.. they could be friends? The connection the men discover is way deeper than either of them bargained for, though, and as they start to really get to know each other that connection becomes undeniable and so real it is practically tangible. But their journey is anything but easy, and with everything stacked against them, can they ever forge a path where they end up together forever?
Hard to Get has everything I could want in a romance: complex characters who grow and change over the course of the story, a romance that is anything but instant or easy, seriously hot sexy times, family and friends, and a love I could practically feel radiating off the pages. Mentions of summers on the Cape (Cape Cod) and Beacon Hill remind me of my childhood and growing up in Boston (and I did indeed spend lots of time on the Cape during the summers), and it made me feel even more connected to the story and characters. This book had me on an emotional roller coaster - I laughed, I gasped in shock, I cried, and yeah okay I may have been slightly swooning at times... but I loved every second of it. And that epilogue! Yes!
I was glued to this story from the first page to the last. Haven's Cove is quintessential small-town America, and I love that setting. The secondary characters are just as compelling as Gabe and Nate. Lily stole my heart completely! That little girl is so full of life and love and sparkle and curiosity, and I hope that one day I have a child just like her. And JONAH! I love the friendship he and Gabe have developed, and OH MY GOD I NEED HIS BOOK. He is so sweet and loving and supportive (and apparently quite protective!) and I need his HEA like I need air.. because, just like Jonah, I am a sucker for happy endings... and no one deserves one more than he does.
The plot, pacing, characterization, setting, editing, writing style - everything about this book (and series so far) works so well for me. I can say without a shadow of a doubt that Jaclyn Quinn is an author to keep your eye on. I have fallen completely in love with Haven's Cove, and I cannot wait to see what comes next!
Man what is it with these tear jerkers! Lol. When I first 'met' Gabe in book 1....I instantly fell in love with him. He's so snarky and sassy and everything seems to be an innuendo out of his mouth. He's a super rich Playboy. Or that's the impression he often gives. The truth is he hides a very soft and big heart underneath that has been broken and not nurtured. His parents are utter assholes. And that's putting it nicely. In book 1, you get to see part of who he really is under all that talk. But in this one, you see everything. And he's just so sweet and beautiful. He just wants someone to truly love him. He wants a family to love and accept him for all he is. Bad, good or otherwise. And Nate gave him a fight and a half. But the best part....Gabe got his family. Now we need to fix up Jonah and I think that's book 3. Woohoo!
Gabe set his sights on Nate in book one and piled on the flirting even though Nate was so hostile. Gabe wins over Nate’s daughter Lily just by being his true self, changing the dynamic. i don’t always enjoy kids in books but she acted her age and didn’t take over the story. I got strong echoes of classic Harlequin plots, in a good way. Nate wasn’t a favorite character and even with his POV alternating with Gabe’s, he seemed a bit shallow. I had a hard time with his assumptions at the start and OTT reactions to Gabe.
It was an entertaining read that did draw emotional reactions from me. It’s an enjoyable series so far too, with the small community feeling and close circle of friends. I’m looking forward to Jonah’s story.
What a warm romantic love story. Happy endings do happen. When Gabriel met Nate , and the challenge began to conquer him. They both had issues from previous relationships. Moving on to something new would take time and trust. They formed a friendship which flourished into love. A few hiccups on the way. You knew these guys belonged together and willing them to just believe and trust then everything would fall in place. Really enjoyed this book.
Seriously Jaclyn has become one of my favorite authors! I hope you have read Hard to Get because you going to fall in love and never want to let go!
Holy shit! Can I have my heart back? Because Gabe and Nate hold it in their hands. Oh my Gucci!!
Gabe, the man with so many sides that no one sees. Everyone sees the rich playboy. But they never stick around long enough to get to know his heart.
Nate, the stubborn man with walls so high no one is going to break them.
These two men despite their past, have moved on to be the people they really want to be. They want to be loved. Want to be someone’s heart and soul. It was such a heartbreakingly sweet story. Now I just need Jonah and Cameron’s story!!
It's hard to write a review to a sequel in a series – you always want to do better (at least I do). I knew since book one that there was sooo much more to Gabe then he lead everyone else to see. Even though he came on strong toward Nate it was still endearing in a way. He's that one friend that well all know and love that is just larger than life. I loved his ability to put everyone at ease even at his own expense. And when he stood up to his father by remembering the word Lily has said to him; “I think a daddy would do that.” OMG I was done for.
Nate: The way he was fighting off Gabe can be described in one word – courageous. It was so much fun watching how Gabe started to grow on him. And when he took up Gabe's challenge and finally kissed him at the lake? Good God in heaven that was something else. I could feel his pain when he was trying to right the wrongs when they fought. The “Please take me back.” was like a kick to gut. I was a crying mess. I loved his mom and how much she wanted them to work. No great love story can begin or continue without the support of your family.
Yet another beautiful love story by Jaclyn Quinn. I'm still shocked that this is her second book. She writes these stories like a seasoned pro. I'm positive that she will be one of the best MM authors out there is a year or two. I LOVE HER BOOKS and I can not wait to read about Johan and his love match. <3
