Fear is quiet. It waits for me beneath the guarding stars.
Ava and Michael have fought their way to Starsgard, a mysterious and secluded country powered by plant technology. But crossing the border comes with a price and their home country is ravaged by fear and hatred of mortals. They soon discover that peace is an illusion and danger is closer than they feared.
Set in an alternate version of today’s Earth where everyone is invincible… except one girl.
Beneath the Guarding Stars is the second book in an action-packed four-book series.

If you’re a fan of maze runner, divergent, shadow and bone, and the hunger games, you’ll enjoy Mortality.
I really enjoyed Ava’s transformation in this series. She started out living as a shell of who she could be, buried under a nation’s expectation of how she should feel, act, think. When a barbaric tradition proved she was different, she fought to become so much more than what she was labeled.
I loved Everly’s world building between the three different nations. The history she slowly revealed as the series continued enriched the story being told in present day. I loved the animals and plants that lived in the world, they all were written with a personality that felt unique for each one. I loved seeing how different each of her brothers were and how they worked together to be the protector.
There were parts where it felt like the story slowed down a bit, but I was so invested I kept reading and I’m so glad I didn’t stop. I read through the whole series in just over a day, I had to know how it would end!
If you are looking for a series to binge on a cold day, I’d recommend this one.
3.5 stars, because this was a slow moving read until about the 65% mark, for me.
Once in Starsguard its just one odd thing after another, but it just leads to more questions. For me it moved slowly until about the 65% mark, and then it got exciting and things moved quickly. It is after this point, some of those questions and oddities were getting answered.
Arachne was an interesting character, and some unresolved questions got answered because of her. Other unresolved questions also got some answers, although I feel not quite fully in some instances.
Overall, not too bad, and another quick read. The environment of Starsguard is very intriguing and pretty well written for an alternate science fantasy world. I would imagine there will be lots of reads who will love these books.
Things in Evereach have become more politically charged as a faux search goes on for Ave as she and Michael find some of the same issues in Starsgard that they left in Evereach; that Ava’s mortality threatens the immortal lifestyle. Michael and Ava grow closer as more of Evereach’s treachery is discovered.
Starsgard sanctuary is full of ups and downs for the star couple. The Council’s fear for Ava has them jockeying to get her out of their borders; there is a secret Basher faction; Michael’s family is found and Ava gets a chance to dance again while she hears things from people she didn’t expect. Rating: 4.25stars
A very good follow-up the Beyond the Ever Reach. I wasn't completely sold on the love between the main character and the love interest. Would have liked to see it a bit more drawn-out before they became inseparable. The love interest did not seem as fully-developed a character as the main character, to me. However, the plot develops well, I was turning pages, completely interested in the story line. Again, very good world-building and pacing, and professional editing a writing. Looking forward to the next in this series.
This series is so unexpected and unpredictable. I usually don't go for YA but this series is different, and I'm totally hooked. I can't wait to read the next book to discover more about Ava and her gifts. Can she thrive in the wild and will she get a second chance at love? Thrilling suspense for sure!
Wow what a follow up to book 1 I just couldn’t stop reading this - it’s fantastic!!!!! I love Ava she’s a wonderful character and this story is getting more exciting with every new chapter 😁
I am amazed at the imagination in this story. It’s really weird when you think of life as you know it. But the story really pulls you in, and you want to know what’s going to happen next. Really good writing with very few errors.
Almost as good as the first book, the twist and turns made this book.... exciting, thrilling & well-written! The characters are so incredible, I still feel like I know everyone, another page turner for sure!
The beginning was good, I skim read a chunk of it before it started to pick up. Then it was really good, it has a bit less romance then I was hoping for but I'm invested in the story and will finish it.
So this series is totally YA but not in a bad way. It does a really neat job in showing the complexities of politics of this world, as well as between the characters. Nice surprise.
I thought Beyond the Ever Reach was wildly imaginative, but Beneath the Guarding Stars really blew me away. Throughout her series Frost not only managed to create one world for the reader, but two amazingly brilliant playgrounds for the mind (and if I had to guess we're probably going to be in for a treat with the next book in the series as well!). One world operates through advanced science and technology, and the other through bio-engineered flora and fauna. All within the context of a world were all human's are practically invincible...all except one. Ava. And Michael is fighting a seemingly hopeless battle to keep her alive. Guarding Stars picks up right were Ever Reach left us hanging. As a reader we're desperate for Ava and Michael to have their happily ever after, but smart enough to know it's not going to be that easy. The world of Starsgard that Frost created is as breathtakingly beautiful as it is treacherous for Ava and Michael. Even as we see cracks in the facade of their new reality, we want to ignore the signs Frost is leaving for us that all is not well. But as in all good stories the tension eventually has a breaking point, and wow, I did not see that one coming. It was the heartbreaking ending with just the sliver of hope that Frost gives us that really got to me. I can't wait to see what her amazing mind conjures up next!!!
A lot of things happened Beneath the Guarding Stars, and all I can really say is that we get a little bit more insight into the unique world of this series, and what happened to Ava and Michael once they were in Starsgard. Seeing Ava and Michael together was one of my favorite things.
The ending was sad to see because Michael thinks Ava is dead, but she actually isn't, and we get to finally meet Snowboy. I hope that in the next book they get reunited again and things get settled for Ava especially with the whole mortality thing.

The second in the Mortality series is every bit as good as book 1. Ava hoped to find a safe home in Starsgard but, of course, things are not going to be that simple and as danger mounts, Ava's relationship with Michael is threatened. The fast-paced plot has plenty of twists and turns (and a couple of stunning dance routines) and there are some great new characters. As with the first book, the ending left me desperate to find out what happens next.
Ok, so not gonna lie here, I binged this series on KU several months ago so I have no idea which book is which at this point, sooooo I'm just gonna say I loved this series and may or may not have purchased the complete series in paperback and have the urge to re-read it whenever I see it on my shelf. (Which is extremely rare for me I might add). I plan to re-read it once I make a dent on my TBR Pile. [looks at bookshelf guiltily]
Many authors of trilogies these days offer the first book free in hopes you'll love it and want to read on, therefore paying for books 2 and 3. I often pick up those first book freebies, but I find not that many of them make me want to read on enough to pick up the rest. This book actually did. I have read the three books in this series to date - only to sadly find there is a book four which is not yet available. Had it been available, I would have picked that one up as well. As it is not available for at least four more months, I will likely have forgotten about it by then, which is really a shame.
